i have been out of monero mining for a while due to a move.
1. in the op there is no multiminer link. does this still work.
2. is multi miner still the same as lucas zone11 miner
3. why is wolf miner linked is it much better than lucas miner (if it is multiminer)
4. any solo miners left? not cloud miners mind you. just a guy or gal with a computer random town usa.
5. with 100/s what is the time frame a solo miner can expect to find a block now using simpleminer
6. with CN now producing a reference code coin. Does this pose a threat to monero. not their reference code coin but others launching with what is now fairly known technology and therefore launched to a broader base than those of us who found bitmonero in its early days.

thanks.

1-3) Wolfs miner is considered the fastest atm, it is an improved fork of Lucas' miner.
4-5) people are still still solomining but with considerably more than 100 h/s. If thats all you have you would be better on a pool but don't expect to make too much.
6) Its debateable but the essence is that their reference coin is just that, an implementation allowing any noob to fill in the variables and have their own CN coin. However, if a dev does not have the knowledge to fork without a holding hand method do you really expect them to be able to maintain a coin and also make it better than XMR ? I doubt it, the reference code imo is the CN team shooting themselves in the foot by giving people the tools to create lots of crappy implementations of their technology.

htank you for reponse.
for education perposes then, perhapse if I could be educated regarding how long to find a block given 100 h/s. I use this number as reference only. I know lots of people are solo mining, but using cloud mining.

again, thanks.

1003  Alternate cryptocurrencies / Altcoin Discussion / Re: Bytecoin [BCN] vs MONERO [XMR] who will be the winner in the Cryptonote War on: June 26, 2014, 02:02:49 AM
If bytecoin fails not failure of open source.
It was not them that developed the tech it was cryptonote.

Bytecoin is first implementation of cryptonote tech. Perhapse bytecoin was given tech on conditions to make it open source.  I don't know just guessing. Some are giving way too much credit to Bytecoin.

I think it is perfectly acceptable to fork coin. If christian wNts to maintain current fork then good for him. The coin remains an experiment. If you believe in the developer than you will follow the developer.

I believe in the developer. My GPUs will follow the developer. There you have it.

And the experiment would continue. No malice directed at christian. I just argue for continued experimentation. The intent was never to have gpu mining perhapse an impossible goal but worthy of effort. And I am sure the challange will be welcomed by christian and profitable and a lot of learning will be achieved advancing cryptocurrency forward

I would advise against experimentation in the 2nd best established Cryptonote currency. Experiments in newcomers are always highly interesting. Examples for noteworthy experiments are: Auroracoin, Jackpotcoin, Talkcoin...

This is not out of jealousy or another emotion but your input in this regard should be taken with a grain of salt.
However the dev since inception said he would fork if necessary. The majority are at a disadvantage here and I think that is not in the spirit of the coin.

Can devs include link to pool source code link to both zone117x and archit.
Also maybe write a header
Goal: open source pool    complete. Then link

I am the masses.  I'm interested i'm Monero due to the involvement of people I respect.  I have no computer skills.  My new computer is windows 8.1 with a pentium chip Embarrassed so I wont be mining.  I started using btc over a year ago.  I have never downloaded the blockchain as I have only used the electrum wallet.  I have considered purchasing XMR but the process of downloading, setting up, and transferring is daunting.  I don't want use an exchange for storage.  I see that an attempt is being made to make a deterministic wallet.  Will this mean no downloading of the blockchain like electrum?

Any advice on how to get started with Monero would be appreciated.

Thanks I'll give it a go when I have some time.  Just to reinforce how clueless I am, in 13 years of owning a computer I have never backed up anything Embarrassed  This is another joy with using the electrum wallet, never a need to back it up.  My seeds are safely stored in several secure locations and my btc will live on when I die.

If you do not have computer skills, for this you should GNU/Linux as it work out of the box (see monero.cc Getting started - for install_monero.sh). Firstly, you can try it from USB bootable stick (see e.g. http://www.ubuntu.com/download/desktop/create-a-usb-stick-on-windows) on which changes will be saved if you set up persistence.

I found out about BTC 6 month ago, and I never actually used Electrum, but I'we been reading about best practices for deterministic wallets and I'we been running bitmonero daemon for a few weeks now. And, for what I understand, if you just wish to create a seed you may not use persistence and can skip installing cpuminer - the script will guide you through the process. Then you would disconnect from the network and generate a wallet, after which should be the same as with your other seeds. I suppose that there are no watching only option for simplewallet, at least at the moment.

One of things that I like about Monero is egalitarian idea behind it (which seems to be working) so if you put to work even old computer, and you let it mine within the daemon, you actually have a chance of finding a block.
You NEED to start mining.  Don:t use a pool. Just be patient.
It would be nice if Monero GNU/Linux distro comes to life, after i2p is reimplemented in c++ Smiley

I must have less than no computer skills.  I downloaded Monero as all I needed to do was click.  I was following the MoneroTalk tutorial where it said after downloadimg (one of the 5 files they show is a zip file which I don't have, just the other 4) I am instructed to SIMPLY move the file to %USERPROFILE%\AppData\Roaming.  After googling and searching for what would be the correct name of my USERPROFILE I came  up empty handed.  One hour gone.

On the Monereo site it basically says their installation instruction only work for Linux.  I had recently saved a link that explains dual boot with linux.  I just read it and stopped when they talk about partitioning my hard drive.  Am I to assume that using a bootable USB stick is easier?  If I am running Monero with linux can I use my computer in Windows as well?  I use my computer a lot during the day and must use windows.

First go to your  control panel and click folder  options
Click on view hidden files

Now go to start (win 7)  and perform search for %appdata%
Folder option will appear Double click on roaming folder
Creat bitmonero folder
Double click bitmonero  folder and save the block chain in there

For Windows eight use the magnifying glass to search for %appdata%
And a roaming folder option will appear.  First you must set folders to view hidden in control panel

It is supposed to checkpoint to disk, but apparently it didn't. Double check that you don't have a disk problem (out of disk space, etc.) and once it syncs up the next time, type "save" in the daemon window.

Thanks for the tips. This coin really is for geeks (funny thing is - I AM one !). Now I can see why nobody's buying it - it's not even out of alpha yet.

ok, I've downloaded the blockchain but can't find any info as to where I should locate it. If I put it in the same folder as the daemon, then the log entry says 'Unable to load blockchain, creaating genesis block'. On the other hand, if I look in users/AppData/Roaming etc, there's no sign of a Monero folder created by the daemon.

If I downloaded the Windows binaries, do I still need to install any 3rd party support infrastructure (there was on cited on the Wallet download page but I forgot the name right now).

Thanks again for the tips !

EDIT: FOund where the blockchain goes - it's in a folder called 'bitmonero' in roaming, not monero.

Bitcoin itself was once a geeky skeletal framework. In fact in either case, it's not the coin itself that is geeky but rather the underlying technology. The task at hand is to bring the technology to the masses which is an evolutionary process.

Actually I would say I am the mass. I heard of btc about six months ago. Have never used btc. Did not own a single cryptocurrency. Started with byet coin bcn and had it running in 3 hours.

I think the word daunting means many things to many people. But I would say using mro/XMR is not daunting

ohh ok. i dont know how to use install script. i am sure others dont either. perhaps link to precompiled exe files would be good.
Windows is the weak point, I agree. Precompiled binaries would be good, but I cannot personally help on this one, except by uploading someone else's Smiley

For the install script, on Ubuntu, it is really just copy and paste.

yea this is what i got

C:\>cd ~ && rm -f install_monero.sh && wget http://david.latapie.name/install_mo

OK so I really need to reword the whole thing for the installation section: these instructions do not work for Windows.

i can imagine the frustration others may experience trying to use command line and those commans in windows.

can you include link to lucas cpu miner in op
can you include wolf cpu miner in op
can you update the block chain to more current one

new people need access to this without searching.
http//monero.cc/getting-started has the install script. Wolf's miner depends on the machine and Lucas' Miner is less perfomant. For the blockchain, I'll see what I can do.
