1001  Other / CPU/GPU Bitcoin mining hardware / Re: Ubuntu Natty Narwhal 11.04 Mining Guide / HOWTO on: March 12, 2012, 09:15:10 PM
This guide is outdated.  There is an updated guide, though I'm not sure that it will address your problem.

Care to post it ? I think people stopped using Ubuntu after the stupid switch to 11.10 and forced Unity onto the users.

At least I did ...
Xubuntu ftw
1002  Other / Meta / Re: [Feature Request] "Ignored by # peoples" besides usernames (10 BTC bounty) on: March 12, 2012, 09:14:44 PM
I will implement this in the forum I am writing.  I hadn't even realized that theymos couldn't be ignored.

Just found selinux
and ...?

The logic still applies: your rooted your dead. Fancy pseudo-security, does not help you.

That concept seems very difficult to grasp for him. Still don't understand why...
'

OF COURSE MORON, NO AVERAGE PERSON KNOWS WHAT THE FUCK YOU TECHNO GEEKS ARE SAYING... YOU ROOT YOU DIE BLAH BLAH BLAH... you think average people just magically know what the fuck you're talking about?
I expect someone who talks about the security benefits of OBSD to know what root means.

I also don't expect average people to be setting up Tor Hidden Services.
1004  Bitcoin / Mining software (miners) / Re: p2pcoin - a self contained p2pool node - boots from CD, USB or network on: March 12, 2012, 05:53:56 PM
With a fleet of rigs, I feel like BAMT is a better choice.  Running a p2pool node on every one of your miners is unnecessary.

Yeah, probably unnecessary.  But it takes no more effort to do.
Until updates come around.

California :: USA :: http://p2pool.stitthappens.com:8336/ :: 0.5% :: BTC and NMC :: StittHappens :: Red Emerald

If anyone has a good way of figuring out payments on the merged chain, let me know.

I'm also mining litecoin at http://p2pool.stitthappens.com:10336/
1006  Bitcoin / Pools / Re: [320GH/s] p2pool: Decentralized, DoS-resistant, Hop-Proof pool on: March 11, 2012, 08:10:54 PM
I wanted to pay out more than 100%, that is, to use a negative fee, because I merged mine numerous chains and that seemed a simple direct way to reward users for helping my merged-mining efforts. However it turns out that simply using a negative amount for the fee does not accomplish what I intended. Maybe it would be useful to cause it to do so, as others too might like to thusly enable their users to benefit from the fact they are actually mining a number of chains at once?

-MarkM-

Lol wut?  Where would the coins come from?

Should we start a bounty to get this recoded in C/C++? Not sure if there is one already, I remember mention of it earlier. Either pure C, or C++ in the same coding style and using the same libs as bitcoind.
bitcoind doesn't have easy to use libs.  That's why libbitcoin is being written.  Even with libbitcoin, I don't see any advantages to switching C since libbitcoin has python bindings.  Maybe p2pool could be integrated into the Satoshi client, but I don't think that would help bitcoin much (maybe litecoin though).

It would be cool if p2pool didn't need bitcoind, but that would be quite a bit of work.
1007  Alternate cryptocurrencies / Announcements (Altcoins) / Re: [ANN] Litecoin - a lite version of Bitcoin. Launched! on: March 11, 2012, 07:07:12 AM
I am starting to think Litecoin's best used is as a game currency.

I don't think it is any better than Bitcoin for normal transactions, but it is great for sending a few satoshi.  I think most game's micro-transactions should only be worth a few cents. Litecoin handle's those smaller amounts much better than Bitcoin does.

I can't remember who said it, but I liked the comparison to wooden nickels.

Games like Diablo 3 are going to be bringing "real" money and game currencies even closer together.  I think Litecoin (which I doubt a company like Blizzard would accept any time soon) would be a great way for at least Indy games to handle their micro-transactions.

Anyone know what is the problem?
Are you sure litecoin has downloaded the whole blockchain? You can't mine with p2pool until you have the block chain.
1009  Bitcoin / Bitcoin Discussion / Re: Bitcoin Magazine on: March 11, 2012, 03:16:51 AM
I am afraid that this thread no longer has anything to do with the magazine.
I wonder if it ever comes out. It's really a pity, the magazine  looked very promising.

As I mentioned a few days ago, we announce this week.
Not too much time left!  Or are you waiting to overshadow Atlas?

Let me guess! Atlas's big announcement tomorrow is telling us that Bitcoin Magazine is in the mail.

And it will finally be known for sure that Matthew is Atlas! DUN DUN DUNNN
1010  Other / Beginners & Help / Re: HOWTO: create a 100% secure wallet on: March 11, 2012, 03:11:37 AM
Get a cheap netbook and put Armory on it. No one will ever be able to steal your funds over the internet, 100% guaranteed.

This is an impractical overkill. I am talking about securing your everyday use wallet. Not the one for lifesavings! For that I would generate address on bitcoinaddress.org and use paper wallet. This armoryclient looks promising though...
Even that malware you are talking about should not be able to overcome ntfs permissions and access the folder unless it impersonates as the only user account who has permissions to access it. And it should not be able to do it if there is no process running under this account. I am not sure how big is a chance that some malware would hijack the session of a bitcoin-qt process when you "run as" it as this designated account though...
While it seems like overkill, it is actually pretty similar to the directions on page 1.  Armory on a separate system isn't so different from running a live cd like recommended here.  Armory is also by far the easiest client I've used (if you can get past the RAM requirement which will eventually be going away).  An offline armory system is also actually offline, unlike the live cd which needs an internet connection.  It has no need to update the blockchain, which will likely take a long time and kill your poor flash drive.

You can also do online transactions with Armory on your normal computer for your everyday funds.  The wallet file (or files since it supports multiple wallets) is far easier to maintain and only needs to be backed up once (unlike the Satoshi client with its keypool).  Armory supports encryption of the wallet as well, so installing it gives you a secure wallet without having to deal with live cds or anything like that.  A key logger would still be bad, but if you didn't mind setting up a live cd like these instructions recommended, you can just use armory with a live cd.  That's what I did until I got an old laptop running.

1012  Bitcoin / Bitcoin Discussion / Re: p2pfoundation Bitcoin criticism on: March 11, 2012, 02:53:19 AM
Why do people focus so much on the mining? Normal users don't need to get their coins that way.  Plus, the amount of coins being added to the system is not a huge portion of the total coins and is constantly getting smaller.

If people are just focused on the subsidies, they are looking at the system completely wrong.  There are plenty of ways to take part in the economy besides mining.
1013  Bitcoin / Bitcoin Discussion / Re: DIANNA: the IANA Decentralized design concept on: March 11, 2012, 02:48:12 AM
Any answer to this?
DIANNA Blocks are going to be WAY slower than bitcoin blocks.  Even if half (which is probably a high guess) of the bitcoin network merge mines DIANNA, won't block time be worse than 20 minutes?  Is this what you want? Maybe I'm just missing something.
1014  Other / Beginners & Help / Re: Running P2Pool proxy on a VPS? on: March 10, 2012, 09:19:29 PM
p2pmining.com is cheaper than a VPS.  You don't have as much control as running your own p2pool node, but it is pretty easy to point your miners there.
The thing is, if I want low-fee mining and just low-fee mining, then there are plenty of pools doing that already.
The point in this is that I want to mine as a part of p2pool without huge extra expense for software, and I can bring enough hardware online at low enough cost that a VPS or even a cheap dedi server won't eat into my profits much.
Looking for anyone who can offer advice/experience to help me get the whole thing running. May even be willing to pay for someone's time to help out  Tongue
p2pmining is p2pool.  He just runs the daemons for you and does payouts based on diff 1 shares.
1015  Other / Beginners & Help / Re: Rate my Tor Hidden Service on: March 10, 2012, 06:39:40 AM

Okay so you seem to think that for some reason, just hacking a simple message board and getting to the root will allow people to circumvent TOR....?

Finally you understand!

Yes, getting the root WILL allow anyone to circumvent tor, theres absolutely no way you can stop that, unless your Jesus or you you have some sort of magic genie.

when you root a server, you can do whatever the fuck you want.

The only way that woudln't happen is if you dug up every road in the world and layed down your own fiberoptic cable and built your own internet, as pointed out by psy above. I would suggest doing that if you wanted to use VBulletin on TOR and wanted to be 100% sure nobody could get the IP address.
Put your webserver behind a firewall that ONLY allows out Tor traffic and you will be better off.

Internet -> Firewall -> Tor Gateway -> Web Server

Do you mean just any NAT router? I personally wanted to use an OpenBSD firewall.
Well how popular is your forum going to be? If you think a cheap NAT router is enough to handle the bandwidth, that is probably fine.

As far as firewalls go, I've been liking pfsense.

Quote
Also what's the point of an OpenBSD router/firewall, OBSD TOR GATEWAY and OBSD server?

Go read the TorBox link.

Even if someone hacks your hidden server software (thttpd, apache, etc.), he can not steal your hidden service key. The key is stored on the Tor-Gateway. Once you cleaned your Tor-Workstation, no one can impersonate your hidden service anymore.

There are LOTS of ways for people to figure out your IP even when protected by Tor.  "[Tor] is experimental software. Do not rely on it for strong anonymity".  There are also LOTS of things needed to make sure you are as secure as possible.

If you think just setting up a tor hidden service that points to apache is enough to hide yourself, you really should do more research.

Maybe look at TorBOX for some tips on security.

just stumbled over this thread...

so if I can setup a VM with Ubuntu on it within my win7 system (on which I have 4 GPUs to mine) I can run P2P on that VM and point my miners there, amirite?
Yeah, that should work.

This is a magneziun/zinc baterry with dirt serving as the acid medium. When the all the Mg oxidate this 'dirt' battery will stop working.

Looks like they're getting ready to scale these Earth Batteries up to charge cell phones: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=U2yc0IpxDpo

That is awesome!
