The problem stated by theymos is that a lot of unrelated posts were being reported to moderators, but I saw nowhere he describing that those off-topic were posted by newbies, Jr Members, Members, Full Members and Senior Members ONLY. Maybe what pissed him off was the alt shill and nazi r0ach (look, he's a Legendary Shocked Shocked Shocked !).
If theymos states it's statistically proven that the problem is related to lower badges I'll grab my stuff and go away, so far Marcus and yourself are arguing enforced by data YOU DO NOT KNOW and he's clearly moved by hate and scorn.

I assume you weren't around for the peak noob apocalypse propagated by one maniac.

And I did say that I thought pre 2014 Heroes and Legends is excessive.

With the Anti Semite you are completely correct. If I was in charge of the thread every single one of its posts would be replaced with this - http://www.mdais.org/en/  and I'd sign up its email address for this - https://www.jdate.com/singles/lgbt-gay/

Adam's WO never was a closed-elite club

But that's why this discussion exists. It's been clearly stated that the thread's a goner unless something is done.

I don't think it should be elites, but certain standards put in place from the off would ensure its survival.

11263  Other / Meta / Re: What to do with the wall observer thread? on: July 03, 2017, 12:09:47 AM
I think two relatively simple rules will eliminate a lot of the chaff and spam without impacting the 'sensible off-topicness':

1) you need to be Hero or Legendary member or member joined before 2014 to post in WO

2) posts in WO do not add to a poster's Activity Count

This will essentially make it somewhat exclusive for posters who have already earned their stripes elsewhere in the forum, i.e. veterans. And it reflects the make-up and effective purposeful useage of the thread as it stands, long-time posters who are occasionally or regularly checking in on this thread, posting price news, thoughts opinions and sometimes loosely related bitcoin or personal material.

The spamming and attempts at disruption are usually from new accounts who covet the attention provided by the thread. Bashing the Off-topic button seems to be their latest tactic, since that is how they have been shut-out most recently (classic DDOS attack is to exhaust the most effective defence). People might not know of the huge job Lauda has done in the past cleaning up after NotLambChop and shutting out that entity's attack on the WO. The current Off-topic attack is most likely a response to that ... there has probably been collateral damage and Lauda has collected some undeserved ill-will for that previous defence.

I dig this as an idea. It's by far the most read thread and that's a great way of preserving its freewheeling nature whilst also exterminating a vast amount of the shite at the point of origin and improving its content.

It would instantly reduce the workload by a great deal.

I'd loosen the member requirements though to senior or perhaps full. There are plenty of comparative newcomers with good stuff to offer.

I know younglings may be narked by being excluded but they have elsewhere to play around. I suppose the only issue would be rival threads created by peons that would create the same amount of work again for mods so it would be back to square one to an extent.

11265  Bitcoin / Bitcoin Discussion / Re: i have proven the Lightning Network can't provide decentralized scaling. on: July 01, 2017, 11:58:04 PM
The developers should figure out the scaling issues now. I am talking for long-term so that we don't need to go through this again when the price is, say, $50,000.

This whole thing has been about control through the veil of scaling. The desire for control will never go away and no scaling solution will ever satisfy everyone. It's never going away but let's at least try and make one upgrade to see if it's actually possible.

There's a constant tension between capacity and the worry of centralisation that'll never go away.

Quote
CNN producer Jimmy Carr summed up the attitude of the mainstream media towards ordinary people when he was caught on tape saying American voters are "stupid as shit".

Carr, the Associate Producer for CNN's New Day, is the unwitting star of James O'Keefe's latest sting video for Project Veritas.

I'd agree with him. Most voters are stupid. It's the politician's job to cut through that stupidity somehow.

The number one googling after the Brexit vote in the UK was 'What is the EU?'

11267  Bitcoin / Bitcoin Discussion / Re: Craig Wright Threatens Bitcoin Community in Surprise Conference Speech on: July 01, 2017, 11:42:19 PM
Looks like the only possible outcome of current bitcoin scaling drama is block split with different scaling/upgrade solution since CW force his ideas with threat.
I won't talk which group is wrong/evil, but i totally disagree that Small Nodes to ‘Fuck Off’.

Who here would devote themselves to that chain? It would be put together by pretty much every agitating prick who's ever gone anywhere near Bitcoin. I wouldn't trust any of them any further than I could defecate them. He's basically saying he wants it to be controlled by banks.

It would be fun to see them comprehensively ignored by anyone who they weren't paying in the event of a fork, but it would be a high price to pay for everyone.
11268  Bitcoin / Bitcoin Discussion / Re: What To Do With Bitcoin Ahead Of SegWit Activation on: July 01, 2017, 11:34:25 PM
I will be doing sod all. I believe people are rational enough not to make choices that wind up in chain splits. There's been vast amounts of threats and noise in recent years. Nothing's come of it so far. I don't think this'll be any different.
11269  Alternate cryptocurrencies / Announcements (Altcoins) / Re: NEM (XEM) Official Thread - 100% New Code - Easy To Use APIs on: July 01, 2017, 11:30:05 PM
Strange days here. NEM keeps sliding lower on tiny volumes. Feels like we need catapult ASAP or this coin will fall into irrelevance.

It always goes in waves. Looks like it's back to semi obscurity for a while. It'll come roaring back at some point.
11270  Bitcoin / Bitcoin Discussion / Re: i have proven the Lightning Network can't provide decentralized scaling. on: July 01, 2017, 06:46:57 PM
For bitcoin to truly take off on a global mass market scale it does need to be as user friendly, or very close to it, as current centralized options. Most people care about ease of use. If there isn't a significant negative difference in using bitcoin compared to standard options, then thats when mass use will happen because bitcoin has additional great features with the main one being you have control over your own money.

I can't see how it could ever match your friendly local bank for convenience and safety unless you use it through a centralised portal.

He indeed misses the main point and for now it's the only point that matters. If it isn't decentralised then there really isn't much point in using it at all.

It can reach a huge scale without your average person switching from Paypal because it has qualities that Paypal will never match. If people can't see that then they should not be getting involved. There are enough others who can.

It was deeply stupid for anyone to tout it as some type of fun filled alternative to your debit card that was just as free and quick. As we now see actual usage brings some strains. They need a lot of hammering out.
11271  Economy / Trading Discussion / Re: Turn $10,000 into 1 Million on: July 01, 2017, 06:40:41 PM
Turning 10 grand into 1 million is only possible by investing into an ICO.

10.1 times out of 10 you're not going to do that great with an ICO. They're designed to enrich a small group, not the saps who supply them with free money for nothing.

You're better off taking your chances with real coins that are already out there. NEM's first price for a few seconds post launch was over 10,000 satoshis. It went down to 30 eventually. Had you piled in then you could've turned $10,000 into $4.5 million of paper profit at its peak a short while back.
11272  Economy / Micro Earnings / Re: Bitcoin 'faucets' and 'free bitcoin' apps on: July 01, 2017, 06:21:56 PM
The first Bitcoin faucet paid out 5 BTC a time -

https://web.archive.org/web/20100703032414/http://freebitcoins.appspot.com/

These days it's a little different. The high value and fees wipes out any gains you can get with them these days. I'm amazed anyone still bothers.

You'd be better off selling some of your old junk and buying BTC with the proceeds or mowing lawns if you're broke.
11273  Other / Meta / Re: What to do with the wall observer thread? on: July 01, 2017, 06:14:20 PM
If newbie shill accounts is the problem with spam and flood shit , then just elevate the abality to post in this golden thread to "Full member" or higher?

Yup. There are many things that could be done to cut the majority of grief off at the legs.

It definitely needs to be preserved somehow. There's nothing else quite like it.
11274  Other / Meta / Re: What to do with the wall observer thread? on: July 01, 2017, 12:40:14 PM
Leave the existing thread as it is, but with Theymos' relaxation of rules to reduce the load on bitcointalk mods.

Nothing else was wrong with it was there?

I guess we still need an owner/mod, but as long as that's another adam (a 'light touch' mod), I'm happy. I thought things went downhill when BCT mods started to attempt to keep things 'on-topic'.

I don't really see why they got their knickers in such a twist about topicness. And a lot of the 'off topic' stuff such as the E coin does have an impact on Bitcoin too.

The topicness should be abandoned, disable the post reporting somehow if the mods are annoyed by it, and whoever takes it on can trim the blatant spammy junk. Everything else should be fair game. Who or what is it harming?
11275  Economy / Trading Discussion / Re: Do 99% of all projects make a profit in the long term? on: July 01, 2017, 12:05:26 PM
Are you referring purely to ICOs?

If you are then they're inherently nobbled the moment they're born. They're crippled by inbuilt greed and ready made bagholders itching to get rid.

There are plenty of coins that did launch without that shite that rose significantly on their own merit.

I don't understand why anyone would bother with an ICO. Let it launch and then see if it has any actual merit beyond enriching the people who proposed it.
11276  Economy / Scam Accusations / Re: Tor wallet SCAM !!! on: July 01, 2017, 11:55:45 AM
It's like as soon as people hear about Bitcoin and start using it, they just give up any normal rules of where they put their money, which is strange as hell considering that they should do the exact opposite and be much more careful than they are with fiat.

It's like, "hey, people use Bitcoin on Tor, so look at this online wallet that's on Tor!  Let's put our coins into that!"

No due diligence, no checking if they're a regulated company, no checking for information about the owners, nothing...

Same thing happens with investments.  Normally none of these people would give their fiat to a company that promises to pay them back >3% daily, but apparently with Bitcoin they feel it's acceptable.  Maybe it's a side effect of all the stories of people getting rich with Bitcoin that cause people to lose all of their judgement.

Yes. I find this instant abandonment of common sense absolutely fascinating.

Why do they do it? Where do they go wrong? Why do they value Bitcoin LESS than their crappy dollars when it's almost guaranteed to be more valuable in the future?

The are PhDs to be written about this.

When I first got into BTC properly Gox was still the number one recommendation. I spent five minutes googling and could not believe that this wonky fuckhole that had mediocrity and doom written all over it was the blue chip of Bitcoin. I bought from real people instead.
11277  Bitcoin / Bitcoin Discussion / Re: What are secure ways to spend lot of bitcoins on offline generated address? on: July 01, 2017, 11:51:54 AM
I've used the cold storage spending option from Mycelium a few times without any mishaps. I wouldn't do it with a paper wallet containing a great deal, but for relatively piddling amounts it's fine. It also handles the change issue perfectly as well.
11278  Bitcoin / Bitcoin Discussion / Re: Lightening Network is a Trap. on: July 01, 2017, 11:49:59 AM
Well, I can't ever see myself finding a use for it in the form it's currently being presented to me. Transactions are limited to 0.042 and a player like me never spends that little.

I'm dead keen to see what it does look like when it arrives. As ever all of the predictions here are worthless bilge not deserving of the slightest attention. Let it roll out and then judge it.
11279  Economy / Service Discussion / Re: Bitpay release Bitpay wallet App Windows Phone on: July 01, 2017, 11:47:05 AM
A noble gesture, but Windows phone is now in its death throes. Perhaps it'll be revived somewhat by a Surface phone if it ever arrives.

Still, they also released Copay on Windows phone which as far as I could tell was the only decent wallet ever available for it.
11280  Economy / Trading Discussion / Re: does ordering bitcoin debit cards expose us to the ID fraud? on: June 30, 2017, 01:56:33 PM
The EU has just drastically tightened prepaid card limits which Bitcoin ones fall under. You can still have an unverified one but you won't be able to put very much on it.

As far as I know all GBP BTC debit cards are issued by this lot - http://www.wavecrest.gi/ with Xapo/Bitpay/Whatever branding on top.

I can't see any Lithuanians on there.
