The sextant measures the angle between two objects with the horizon being almost exclusively one of the objects. The most basic and common measurement is the elevation of the Sun.

A more advanced use of the sextant is to measure 'angular size', this requires taking the difference of two readings between the horizon and each side of the object. 'angular size' is a constant value that doesn't change with distance from the observer and the visual or 'apparent size' of the object.

You can also make non-standard use of the sextant to measure 'apparent size' by sighting the sides of a single object in both mirrors. 'apparent size' is a variable value that changes with the distance from the observer to an object.

Now put a convex lens (the atmosphere) in between you and the point the Sun faded out at, this time as the Sun goes farther away it's magnified in size and gets bigger and bigger. Do you understand how the the optical convergence and optical magnification conspire to keep the Sun the same size until the viewers perspective, say 6 feet above the ground causes the Sun to get obscured by the horizon?
