1141  Bitcoin / Project Development / Bitcoin compo at a major demoscene party? on: December 24, 2013, 04:23:35 PM
What do you think about this idea:
Bitcoiners could gather prize money for prizes for a Bitcoin compo at some good demoparty. "Bitcoin wild compo" or similar.

I think it would be great publicity, lots of tech-savvy people there and potential users. Probably something very interesting might result from the competition, too. There was a Bitcoin stand at the Assembly last year, but a compo would be great. Big parties have quite some publicity. I was thinkg Assembly Summer 2014 or the Gathering would be best, both have around 5000 visitors. Assembly has lots of gaming people but also a strong old school presence, I think the entries would be interesting...
1142  Bitcoin / Project Development / Re: 8-bit style demos for Bitcoin on: December 24, 2013, 04:14:25 PM
Bitcoiners should gather prize money for a "Bitcoin Wild Compo" or something like that, at some good demo party. Alternative Party/Assembly next year?

Yeah, I've always thought the demo scene would be a great match for bitcoin.

Well, I think we should do it, definitely. I think the prize would be enough to get some interesting entries, I wouldn't be the only one to contribute I guess. Would like some more discussion about the topic! I guess Assembly Summer 2014 would be a nice party for this? It's BIG but has strong old school scene presence... or the Gathering. Both have around 5000 visitors.

EDIT: There's now a thread, https://bitcointalk.org/index.php?topic=383414.0
1143  Economy / Service Discussion / Re: If you used Brainwallet.org - MUST READ! - Security Breach! on: December 24, 2013, 04:07:08 PM
People are too worried about this. Everything that should be done is add a disclaimer not to use the Brainwallet site if you don't know what you're doing/can't come up with a proper passphrase. I like my brainwallet and I'll keep using it, it's a very nice idea. No surprise it's not suitable for the masses, just look at any list of leaked plaintext passwords. Or a list of leaked md5 passwords and see how many per cent you can crack.
1144  Economy / Service Discussion / Re: RIP firstbits? on: December 24, 2013, 03:49:33 PM
I understand firstbits has its problems but I don't understand all the hate. If I use a fistbits address instead of a purely random one, I'll still be using just one address. I can't see how people getting their firstbits addresses by sending some BTC to an address to make it their own could contribute to blockchain spam in any significant way. Most people would use their firstbit addresses anyway.

Many people have an address for donations in their signature for example, it would not matter if it was a firstbits address. I think it's just fine to have a more permanent address to give out.

I'd be happy to see a working firstbits lookup and if a was more of a coder I would like to set that up. For the most popular altcoins, too.
1145  Other / Beginners & Help / Re: Greetings and Good Day from HashFast Technologies! on: December 23, 2013, 11:41:44 PM
That would be nice if only hasfast email worked . returns as invalid address . both sales and support.

Message the support, they should fix that.
1146  Bitcoin / Bitcoin Discussion / Re: Is there a bitcoin wallet that doesn't cost multiple gigs to install? on: December 23, 2013, 10:58:26 PM
so get mutibit?? how much space should that take up??  i dont want a web wallet.... and until i make some $$ here i cant afford another harddrive.

Why not a web wallet? Blockchain.info is secure, if you use it like ProfMac for example.
1147  Bitcoin / Mining speculation / Re: Mining with CEX.IO or why do I not believe skeptics on: December 23, 2013, 10:17:44 PM
How would pouring more money into it help to break even? You would be just investing your profit in addition to the original money, why would it be easier to break even with that? So no, it does not help.

Yes, sorry, I "calculated" in BTC terms as I consider NMC etc do be worthless "addons"...and the reinvestments in GHash let the cash flow grow and the price drop might be overcompensated...some wishful thinking...

By the way: when you sell GHash, who gets the rewards from the mining jobs they already started but that haven`t been finished yet? When you buy GHash, you only get the "new" rewards, don`t you? I guess cex.io get`s this difference?

I see getting paid every time the Ghash.io pool finds a block, so the rewards go to whomever that's holding the Gh/s when a block is found. So if you sell the mining power, you won't get anything for the time after the last block found by the Ghash pool. But blocks are found so often that it isn't really significant.
1148  Bitcoin / Mining speculation / Re: Mining with CEX.IO or why do I not believe skeptics on: December 23, 2013, 05:57:15 PM
And what if you keep reinvesting the payouts inluding those altcoins (nmx, ixc and dvc)?

How would pouring more money into it help to break even? You would be just investing your profit in addition to the original money, why would it be easier to break even with that? So no, it does not help.

DUI law firm? These law firms specialize in all kinds of things in the States. But sure drunk drivers deserve as good legal protection as anyone.
1150  Other / Politics & Society / Re: Hello Bitcoin, Goodbye Western Union? on: December 23, 2013, 11:22:33 AM
What about exchange fees?

One has to covert fiat currency into bitcoin, transfer the bitcoin abroad, and then their relative back home must convert the bitcoin back into local currency.

Currency exchanges usually charge around 2-3% and times this by two and you're looking at 6% in exchange fees plus the hassle of doing a double conversion.

WU is still generally more expensive, but I still don't see a good way of getting the fees to 1% or less.

Well, not that terrible, you would lose some in the conversion to another currency anyway. I guess it's not easy to do better. Also the minimum fees are ridiculous.
1151  Bitcoin / Mining speculation / Re: Mining with CEX.IO or why do I not believe skeptics on: December 23, 2013, 11:14:00 AM
Your post is quite contradictory, you're saying you don't believe those who say it's not profitable to hold and you must trade the Gh/s in order to make a profit and yet you are doing just that. Next time you buy Gh/s, just hold them and wait until you break even. I would not say holding for two weeks or a month is very long term.

Yes, that's a vanity address. They are not that well known to newer people anymore because there is no working firstbits lookup and many people dislike the idea in the first plave. IMO, though, someone should set up a working firstbits lookup for the most popular coins as soon as possible. I would, if I could. But I bet there are a lot of people on this forum who can code that.
1154  Bitcoin / Bitcoin Discussion / Re: Spreading the word: "Do you take Bitcoin?" on: December 22, 2013, 06:37:29 PM
I ask this sometimes when I'm buying stuff but I don't want to bother the people in the local kitchen utensil store or something. But if I'm online shopping for something that is related on any level to the stuff the average bitcoiner is, I often ask. I've had success too and got at least a few people into Bitcoin.
1155  Bitcoin / Bitcoin Discussion / Re: Some people completely miss the point about BITCOIN on: December 22, 2013, 06:34:16 PM
Anonymous online transactions and the cool cryptography stuff got me into Bitcoin and I decided to invest (and use it) when I realized the potential of it
1156  Other / Beginners & Help / Re: Idea for a physical bitcoin on: December 22, 2013, 01:40:13 PM
I was thinking about this the other week.
Somehow putting the key maybe even printed inside opals that can only be opened by being totaly crushed and destoryed. Or those cool purple colored rocks people pull out of the ground, what ever they are called. Somehow get the key inside that

Yeah, you could "mine" your bitcoins when you need them!
1157  Other / Off-topic / Re: Finished watching Breaking Bad?? What next? Any suggestion? on: December 22, 2013, 12:37:42 PM
Well, if you have not seen Sopranos, then watch that. Gripping and exciting. Maybe Oz would be interesting too.
The Wire is slower-paced but it is brilliantly written, very much a classic. If you have not seen Twin Peaks, then watch that. Different from these but the unique, dark atmosphere of the series is something special.
1158  Other / Off-topic / Re: [WTF!] Toughest encryption cracked by listening to your CPU with a phone on: December 22, 2013, 12:25:37 PM
Keep in mind that you need:

  • to send several mails (amount depends on the length of the key) to the victim which you know the content off, mainly because of the bandwith of the used frequency.
  • a victim using an old GPG version (2.x is not affected)
  • to be able to get that close to your victim at the moment the prepared mails are encrypted
  • a victim using specific hardware (as far as I understood the paper not every cpu, board etc. is affected)

so keep your panties on and update GPG, which you should have done allready anyway.

And which is also quite rare (clarifying number one on your list), the recipient has to have configured her system so that it automatically decrypts any received messages. But anyway, that was just a demonstration of the possibility of such things and a very neat one. Who knows what might be possible if government agencies point sufficient resources, probably a lot more. Remember how many cryptographers NSA has employed, many of them on par with Shamir et al.

That's one crazy attack! These hardware-based attacks are interesting to me.
1159  Other / Off-topic / Re: If bitcoin had a smell,how would it smell like? on: December 22, 2013, 12:15:09 PM
Like hope.  Or like something that humans haven't smelled yet.

Sadly, every time I now read the word 'hope' I think of this guy... and so does Dank.

Now, I smell crimes against humanity.

As for BTC.. its a mix of asic scams and ponzi scheme junk coins.  STANKY Grin

Yeah, peace nobelists very often do that.

But seriously, why is this in Off-topic? This thread should be in Bitcoin discussion. Can the mods please move this?
1160  Bitcoin / Bitcoin Discussion / Re: Do you think some countries already adding BTC to their reserves? on: December 22, 2013, 05:23:32 AM
I don't think so, although I guess anything is possible. Recently a municipality in Finland wanted to invest some money in the national lottery (yes, playing lotto)... there was some discussion but it was, sadly, illegal to do that. I bet the people are happy to have such wise people in control of their tax money.
Well, that was off-topic but I wanted to share that with you anyway. Forgot that the US has now some BTC from the Silk Road, so I guess that's a partial "yes" to your question.
