1181  Bitcoin / Bitcoin Discussion / Re: Overstock.com now accepting bitcoins as payment! on: January 10, 2014, 05:07:37 AM
Don't false advertise, they still don't accept it for international orders (e.g. the whole world).

That blows.  I just told a friend in Costa Rica today, and a friend stationed in Pakistan to buy .

So can they buy and ship to me in the USA?

EDIT:  That was a dumb question.  of course they can.
1182  Other / CPU/GPU Bitcoin mining hardware / Add 4th GPU - All Hash Rates drop 40% on: January 10, 2014, 03:22:54 AM
So I had 3 ASUS 280'x running and all three pushing at least 720 ..... it was wonderful.

Then I plug in a fourth GPU and they all drop to about 450 ....

Is it temperature?   May have gone from 67C to 70C at most ....
Is it a lack of power from power sources/motherboard?

So strange that when four are attached, they drop ALMOST in half ....

Thanks
1183  Other / CPU/GPU Bitcoin mining hardware / Re: XFX Invisible to OS .... ? on: January 10, 2014, 03:17:25 AM
Update:  Solved.

Problem was this:   I couldn't use both 1x slots.   I can only use one of them.

So this worked:   GPU 1: 16x ..... GPU 2:  16x ..... GPU 3:  16x..... GPU 4:  1x

Basically pulled one GPU from a 1x and put it into a 16x.

Then the system detected it.
1184  Bitcoin / Bitcoin Discussion / Re: Merchants that accept Bitcoin and settle in USD are driving the price down on: January 10, 2014, 02:05:48 AM
I edited my post.

Check it again.   Please reply to the 2nd half if possible.

Somehow you have to provide evidence that increased adoption, the benefits of increased awareness, the benefits of increased popularity, and all the benefits of a big site like Overstock accepting bitcoin, still somehow is completely nullified by the fact that they cash out to USD.  I don't think its possible to make that claim.

And the price of Bitcoin sure did not go down today, on the first day of Overstock accepting Bitcoin.
1185  Bitcoin / Bitcoin Discussion / Re: Merchants that accept Bitcoin and settle in USD are driving the price down on: January 10, 2014, 02:03:15 AM
The problem with this is that it drives the price down.

using Bitpay or Coinbase, and settle in USD, they are just driving the price down.

You realize that you completely failed to explain why you think they're driving the price down, right?

You state your theory but then have nothing to back it up.  Why is it necessary to back it up?  Because many would disagree with you on this.

Many feel that adoption (which is the other side of this coin you present) balances out, if not increases price of bitcoin.

So why do you feel it outweighs and in fact nullifies any benefit of increased adoption?

1187  Bitcoin / Bitcoin Discussion / Re: Outstanding Discussion on Bitcoin in 2014 on: January 09, 2014, 07:25:11 PM
Maybe you (or anyone here) can clarify something for me.

I assume you're referring to the discussion on the 51% attack.  I was under the impression that even if a pool had the *capability* to control 51% of the network, everyone on that pool would need to hop on board with the mutiny.  Is that premise completely wrong?   Can the pool owner secretly do something without the knowledge or consent of the pool members, once the pool has that much influence?  If yes, then I can see why this would be a threat.

If the assumption is that everyone on the pool has to suddenly become "evil" and want to take down bitcoin for their own miniscule financial gain, then i think the entire 51% threat thing is total nonsense, for obvious reasons.  If the assumption is that the pool owner (or any individual member of the pool) can begin doing evil ... then can someone explain to me why we don't just ban pools?  I realize everyone wants that "extra little nudge" in profits ... but if an element of centralization is going to be a major element of the first decentralized financial network, then we have a major weakness in the chain.  Anyone who has studied decentralized networks knows that it is the *centralized* element (if there is any) which ultimately could destroy the network.  As long as every element remains decentralized, its impervious.

Sorry if that causes an uproar, but every rule you adhere to every day of your life is in place because of the bad apples that ruin things for the group.  Otherwise you'd be able to talk on your phone while driving.  Its the dummies who can't do two things at once that get in accidents and cause laws to be put in place which inconvenience the rest of us.  Thats how life is.  I think the safety of the Bitcoin network is more important than demanding the existence of pools, no?

1188  Bitcoin / Bitcoin Discussion / Re: Fascinating miner article on: January 09, 2014, 03:58:24 PM
Yea, I thought it sounded a little off, but thought you guys still might like to see it.

You think he was boasting, or do you think he's really made $100K?

I didnt read the article, but if the "BS" meter is going off becuase people don't believe he's made that much money, then I'd say you guys are wrong.   I personally made $11,000 on the DOGE coin "thing" a few weeks ago, in one week.  If he's mining alt coins, there are plenty of pump and dumps that are kicking out thousands and thousands of dollars on a cyclical basis.  Its not BS.  And with a rig that big, you can bet he's making the most on each pump and dump possible.  Which means if I made $11,000 ... then he easily made $20,000.  On just that one coin.

If he's referring to Bitcoin only, maybe he's including the increase in value per coin.

If he's referring to Litecoin - i know people that bought / mined 3500 of them when it was at $2.70 last summer who easily made $140,00 when it hit $52 ....

So depending what you guys are calling BS ... it may not be.

I didnt make it that far yet.  I listen while I make breakfast and only heard through the discussion with Adam & Andreas.   Tomorrow morning ill catch the second half.  I did see some comments on the podcast website itself - someone saying "This guy is so cocky", under that portion of the podcast.  Not sure why just yet. Should be and interesting listen

I don't think we should be paying Senators just because they support bitcoin. It is legal even?

Yes.

1193  Bitcoin / Bitcoin Discussion / Re: Bitcoin Vs. Paypal - and PayPal is getting sued. on: January 09, 2014, 05:18:52 AM

Amen to that by the way, i gave my lawyers 200 BTC back August for retainer, come October one of them (jokingly) proposed to me. Why do my own dirty work when people will do it for bitcoin. all i had to do was follow their instructions.

Man you must have a downright shit ton of BTC to be tossing around 200 Bitcoin ... even at August prices ... that's one hell of a retainer.

1194  Bitcoin / Bitcoin Discussion / Re: Bitcoin Vs. Paypal - and PayPal is getting sued. on: January 09, 2014, 05:12:04 AM
You know ...

I have spent the last 4 weeks asking PayPal why my account was suddenly being limited as well.

Out of thin air, 90% of my orders were declining for no apparent reason, and then we had 4 orders suddenly put on hold.

When I called I got the same explanation:  "You must have had a chargeback"

As it turns out, I had made a couple purchases of physical bitcoins through Ebay just prior to all this ....

Nobody's is syncing.

If someone could post the node list here Im sure many would appreciate it.

Also the exact thing you put into the "Console" area, assuming that's where they go.

Thanks.
1196  Bitcoin / Bitcoin Discussion / Re: Bitcoin's long term future at stake? on: January 09, 2014, 01:37:57 AM
What happens when all bitcoins are mined and competition for bitcoin mining decreases because there are only transaction fees?  What then?  Bitcoin may run into serious complications 40 years down the line from now.  This means the longevity of bitcoin network is at stake.  Once the hashing rate decreases then, any government/ corporation can jump in and perform a 51% attack.

It is going to be over 100 years before the final coins are mined.  The year 2140.
1197  Other / CPU/GPU Bitcoin mining hardware / Re: XFX Invisible to OS .... ? on: January 09, 2014, 12:27:22 AM
have you tried the xfx in one of the known working slots?

If it works in another slot I would try one of the working cards in the 1x slot the xfx card currently occupies if this is on a riser test the riser with another known working card as well.  Also if one of the 1x slots work you should not need to jumper, but this could also be tested: https://bitcointalk.org/index.php?topic=36061.0

Okay.   I completely switched all the risers and the cards.

Then installed each card one by one.

This time the XFX (second in line) detected and installed and runs fine.

Apparently the problem is - the fourth GPU - no matter what it is - no matter where its plugged in - and no matter which riser it uses .... doesn't get detected by the motherboard.

At least that's my assumption.  They're all in different positions now.

The 4th GPU installed is an ASUS that was working fine before, in a slot that was working fine before, using a riser that was working fine before.

Yet in Device Manager, only 3 Display Adapters are detected.

Is there some setting that allows more than 3 GPU's to be detected?  That's the only thing I can think of.

1198  Other / CPU/GPU Bitcoin mining hardware / XFX Invisible to OS .... ? on: January 08, 2014, 08:44:02 PM
My setup:

1)  ASUS 280x on 16x plug
2)  ASUS 280x on 1x plug
3)  Sapphire 280x on 16x plug

All three are detected by OS and mining software, and work great.

4)  XFX 280x .... i put on the remaining 1x plug.

OS doesn't recognize it (not in device manager at all), and doesn't mine, though its spinning just fine, powered, etc.

I have an ASRock Extreme4 motherboard.

How can I get this last GPU to be detected by the OS?

I tried putting in the drivers CD for the XFX.  Catalyst popped up like it always does and began installing stuff all over again.  I have no idea if it actually detected the XFX.  No idea if it was installing anything specifically for the XFX.

Help!
1199  Bitcoin / Bitcoin Discussion / Those seeking to get rich, versus "The other 6 Billion" ... on: January 07, 2014, 05:55:55 PM
Hi all -

The tense encounter Andreas Antonopoulos had on the panel at the Vegas Bitcoin Conference last month, was one for the books.

He sat on a panel with several entrepreneurs wracking their brains over how to get rich off Bitcoin, and the best ways to adhere Regulators in the process.  After attending conferences around the world, Andreas viewpoint on Bitcoin differs greatly from those in Silicon Valley.  His mantra has always been that Bitcoin is for "the other 6 Billion".  Here he comments after the Vegas experience, with a clip I think everyone on this board needs to listen to.  It's a powerful assessment of Bitcoin as of January 2014.

1200  Bitcoin / Bitcoin Discussion / Re: Name the 0.0001 BTC unit - 1st POLL on: January 07, 2014, 06:06:21 AM
In the end, none of this is going to matter.

The entrepreneurs / startups / businesses which are building services on top of Bitcoin are going to decide how things are named.

And I am willing to bet they will simply find a way to put a different "Mask" on the "0.0002893298" display.

It will look easy, simple, basic, and catchy to understand.

Its those parties which will be coming up with the marketing for Bitcoin.
