11881  Economy / Exchanges / Re: [ANN] Bitcoinica Consultancy abandons customers. Bitcoinica to enter Liquidation on: December 20, 2012, 03:07:16 AM
Take this with a grain of salt, because it's unsubstantiated rumour at this point, but if it's true it would be enormously helpful to the liquidation process.

11882  Economy / Service Discussion / Re: MemoryDealers.com founder Roger Ver abuses admin access at Blockchain.info on: December 20, 2012, 02:55:52 AM

You two freaked me out for a second. I clicked the link and the first thing I saw was my name at the top. Then I realized what page I was on.
11883  Economy / Service Discussion / Re: WARNING - Blockchain.info is NOT SAFE on: December 20, 2012, 01:54:30 AM
To be clear, I agree with Roger that the dude deserves the scammer tag.  It's not his money...

bulanula got it, so should this dude.

What about that guy that got overpaid by Mt Gox last year?
11884  Economy / Service Discussion / Re: WARNING - Blockchain.info is NOT SAFE on: December 20, 2012, 01:44:48 AM
If I even felt/knew that Roger Ver did something nefarious, I would start or join the choir of sticking it up his ass regardless of his contribution to Bitcoin 100. At this penning, I don't believe such an anal act is warranted.

I don't usually like your posts but these lines made me laugh.

What's Bitcoin100? I must have missed that. Got an explanatory link?

Please see my sig, Charlie. First line is a link.
11885  Economy / Service Discussion / Re: WARNING - Blockchain.info is NOT SAFE on: December 20, 2012, 01:37:01 AM
Plus, isn't this MemoryDealers guy the kid who left the country because the IRS tried to stick a dildo up his ass or something?

Maybe this talks good about Roger. Who, besides making mistakes from time to time, has an extensive history for supporting and developing Bitcoin worldwide. Trolls in this thread all summed up, have done less than 0.001% that Roger made in the benefit of the community.

And blockchain.info service and features are awesome. I support both Roger and blockchain.

+1

I was going to refrain from chiming in till I got to the end of this thread (already read the other one--related, and now locked). Before I add further to the above, I'll first state that I find it admirable on Roger's part that at no time did his posts come across in an angry tone, nor did he revert to vulgarity.

Besides Rassah, Roger Ver is the only other person that has access to the funds held by Bitcoin 100, structured that why in the event of the proverbial bus accident. (I don't have access) I trust Roger fully and this episode, albeit sad, does not cause me concern.

Further, Roger Ver has donated considerably to Bitcoin 100, but that did not stop me from once (maybe twice) penning about him being a major distributor of Magic: The Gathering cards just prior to getting involved with Bitcoin. (my apologies for bringing it up again, but using this fact to drive a point home) If I even felt/knew that Roger Ver did something nefarious, I would start or join the choir of sticking it up his ass regardless of his contribution to Bitcoin 100. At this penning, I don't believe such an anal act is warranted.

Roger, regardless of whatever transpires further regarding this episode, or any of the like in the future (hopefully not), please keep up the class act, continue presenting your arguments (for lack of a better term) in a professional tone.

~Bruno K~

Contacted them, they said that they were sure their customers had reviewed them online but I couldn't find anything.

Their whois entry is 5 days old. http://whois.domaintools.com/cpcelectronics.co.uk

No contact or adress information on the site but the chat, the adress listed on WHOIS is a huge office block, about the best adress in Manchester, so it's likely a mail forwarding service.

Yeah, this looks like a "money re-appropriator"

EDIT: Haha, laughing about the 1 year guarantee. You can't even do that in the EU. That's way too short.

I don't think it's a mail drop, but the address seems to cater to only offices (highend, as you implied) and not manufacturing: http://www.orega.com/orega-offices/manchester

So if the car doesn't start when you put the key in and turn it, do you no longer call it a car?  If someone has removed the battery, it's no longer a car?

Nope, I'd still call it a car. Though I may amend that and call it a...crappy car. Smiley

Is a BFL Single SC a Single SC without ASIC chips? Is a car a car if it has no motor?
I'd say a car can still be a car without a motor, though a more accurate description might be "self propelled vehicle".

I'm not trying to claim that BFL ASICS do, in fact, exist.  I am simply trying to dispell the belief that an ASIC must have hashed on the main network before it exists.  That's just bad logic.  It obviously exists moments before it hashes on the main network.

Hmmm. I'd like a definition of "moments". What length of time is a "moment"? If it's further divisible by any amount, could the hashing device have not existed only in that shorter time frame? The length of a moment becomes a moving target which, at it's limit, equals zero. So an  an object simply cannot exist (with respect to the network ) for any appreciable time before it hashes. From the perspective of the network, ASIC hashing devices are simply spontaneously generated.

I have discovered a truly marvelous proof of this, which this thread is too narrow to contain.

Does it consist of Fermat on a castle wall debating about two swallows and a coconut? If so, break up the theorem into two to three threads.

You'd also have to be delusional to think they are alive.

Clearly.

Still, I don't understand why people conflate "incomplete" with "nonexistent". What strange dichotomous worlds some people must live in.

Perhaps a more accurate phrasing would be "does not yet exist with respect to the bitcoin network". If no hashing for the network has been done by a BFL ASIC, then from the networks point of view they do not exist even if complete.
Uh, no...

Existence of an item or product does not depend on the use of that item or product.  If a car is sitting on a dealer's lot, do you say it does not exist yet because it has not been driven?

I would not, but the car on the lot in your example has been completely assembled and has all working parts (theorectically) in place and in proper working order.

Dear Bitcoin100 community,

once again: Thank you all for supporting us! We got 16 more BTC from your generous donation activities and now achieved the state, perfectly meshing with your group name: We are now BITCOIN100! :-)

Please let me address some special thanks @Phinnaeus Gage, who pushes Bitcoin100 with his untiringly commitment. Also @Rassah, who, in my external perception, stands for the strictly correct accountancy of your initiative. And last but not least @jsmithers, our personal Bitcoin-consultant, who initially established the contact and who is so kind to post the messages of BUND Berlin e.V. to you.

So, have some nice christmas days and good luck for all the ongoing and coming kickstarter-campaigns!

Thorsten Edler
BUND Berlin e.V.

Speechless! Words can't describe how I feel about Thorsten's kind words. Thank you.

For the Bitcoin community: Did you know that Bund set up a page on their website dedicated entirely to Bitcoin? Take a look: http://www.bund-berlin.de/bund_berlinde/spenden/bitcoin_spenden.html

Just honored my pledge by sending 5 BTC to the Bitcoin 100 vanity address, TX ID: 9955afd2b35b52f8de669b6a747442641d58347f0977a8e577f9073642165da4

Thank you, edd. The list has been updated reflecting this donation, all dedicated to Bund per your wishes.

I want to go on record and state that I will be honoring my BTC5 pledge to Bitcoin 100's pool in the coming days, ~BTC4 of which to be used toward the next non-profit(s).

Now, I'm going to get a little more aggressive with LPA, and I believe Ente is still courting an unnamed non-profit and has been in touch with Tony at BitPay to get some kinks out.

Do Bitcoins Pose A Threat To PayPal, Visa And Mastercard?

Quote
The volatility of the Bitcoin's value is settling down and an increasing number of online retailers are excepting the currency. New smartphone apps are enabling Bitcoins to be used as easily as cash. From The Economist article:

Tony Gallippi, the boss of Bitpay, which processes Bitcoin payments for retailers, says that his client list has increased from around 100 in March to 1,100 now. These are mostly e-commerce businesses, selling things like domain names and web hosting. But the list also includes a taxi-driver in Chicago and a dentist in Finland. "Credit cards weren't designed for the internet," he says. Bitcoin transactions cost less and cannot be reversed in the way credit-card transactions can be. This is important for firms selling to customers in countries known for credit-card fraud, such as Russia or Belarus.

Seems the important point is the Put Blah Blah Blah in your signature space. This isn't a purchase so Yeah if you want a shot put it in your signature it costs nothing. Maybe pride or ego but nothing monitarily. I am pretty sure there is no accepted exchange rate for pride or ego to $.

Providing advertising for a company is a form of consideration. Requiring some form of consideration for a sweepstakes turns it into an illegal lottery.
It's only advertising as much as requiring people to like & share a page on Facebook is (thereby advertising it on their newsfeed).  If this is illegal, then I know of a whole host of companies on Facebook who should face similar indictments.

There was a CEO that got slammed by the SEC for a Facebook message, I forget which company though.

11899  Bitcoin / Bitcoin Discussion / Re: Meanwhile on Wikipedia... on: December 17, 2012, 05:37:14 PM
Sorry, I feel I need to explain this statement a bit better

Quote from: Rassah
Also, just remember that those cool kids at school usually end up with really shitty lives. SA is no exception (crappy, dead-end jobs, living in the middle of nowhere, REALLY boring lives, and generally poor, with completely ignorant misunderstanding on business or finance. A bunch of them are Occupy types)

I don't mean that they are bad or have less worth because they are poor. I don't think someone's current net worth necessarily says much about them. My own net worth only finally went from negative to positive this September. There are plenty of examples of Mr. Douche Moneybags out there, especially from people who simply inherited their money. And there are a TON of examples of poor people busting their asses dawn to dusk to support their families and strive to get to something better. Especially in the much maligned illegal alien community. I admire those people. Specifically those with the drive to move forward, the curiosity to learn, explore, and improve their lives. The types of poor that I don't like, and that I see among a lot of SA's ranks, are the complacent kind of poor, who are poor in money, motivation, curiosity, and culture, and are comfortable where they are. They are the types who live in Small Town, Middle America, working hard, dead-end jobs, living in the middle of nowhere, and have no interest in doing anything more, or traveling outside of their town, because they "have everything they need right here." Or the types that are like that, who also are often complaining about having too little money, crappy families, and not enough to do where they're at, but yet don't bother to do anything about it. All they do is moan, but are too comfortable where they are, and too afraid to attempt to change.
Maybe I'm just biased by the few people in SA I know personally, who do actually live in those poor, uninteresting situations, but considering one of the main points of SA's ridicule is that Bitcoiners are flailing around, trying to be "Randian supermen," whom they make fun of at every opportunity whenever someone tries to throw out wild ideas for starting a business, or invests in mining equipment, while their status quo is to just be a good little 9-to-5, tax-paying, obedient citizen, it makes me think that my bias is warranted.

I'm also now fairly convinced that SA works on their own self-feeding bias. Their whole point is to laugh at other's expense, so the only links that end up on their forums are ones some members track down about someone failing miserably. And sure, we have people like logansryche and others who may not be all right in the head, had a few people who did blow a ton of money on mining equipment at precisely the wrong time because they didn't bother doing their finance homework, and had idiots investing tons of money in things that were obviously too good to be true. If that's all you ever read when on that forum (and it usually is, since that's the point of it), then you would obviously have a pretty bad view of Bitcoin and bitcoiners, while completely missing that a majority here does have good business ideas (or are at least willing to risk and learn from mistakes), did run the math and are making actual profits on mining, and don't invest in stupid scams. Most just stay quiet, some ridicule the same people SA does.
One quote I remember best from one of my teachers - "If you get cut off by people in traffic, you will just assume "bad driver" and carry on. If you are told that Asians are bad drivers, and then you get cut off by people in traffic, you will actually look to see if the person is Asian, and validate your own prejudice that "Asians are indeed bad drivers, or ignore it if they aren't. That's how racism works - it's a self-feeding loop" We're all likely guilty of that at some level.

The latter part of your post reminded me of 1984, quoted below in bold: http://douglassocialcredit.com/resources/resources/fromm_erich_afterword_%20to_%20george_orwell.pdf

Quote
To them "power is
not a means; it is an end. And power means the capacity to inflict unlimited pain and suffering to another
human being"[3]. Power, then, for them creates reality, it creates truth. The position which Orwell
attributes here to the power elite can be said to be an extreme form of philosophical idealism, but it is more
to the point to recognize that the concept of truth and reality which exists in 1984 is an extreme form of
pragmatism in which truth becomes subordinated to the Party. An American writer, Alan Harrington, who
in Life in the Crystal Palace [4] gives a subtle and penetrating picture of life in a big American corporation,
has coined an excellent expression for the contemporary concept of truth: "mobile truth." If I work for a big
corporation which claims that its product is better than that of all competitors, the question whether this
claim is justified or not in terms of ascertainable reality becomes irrelevant. What matters is that as long as
I serve this particular corporation, this claim becomes "my" truth, and I decline to examine whether it is an
objectively valid truth. In fact, if I change my job and move over to the corporation which was until now
"my" competitor, I shall accept the new truth, that its product is the best, and subjectively speaking, this
new truth will be as true as the old one. It is one of the most characteristic and destructive developments of
our own society that man, becoming more and more of an instrument, transforms reality more and more
into something relative to his own interests and functions. Truth is proven by the consensus of millions; to
the slogan "how can millions be wrong" is added "and how can a minority of one be right." Orwell shows
quite clearly that in a system in which the concept of truth as an objective judgment concerning reality is
abolished, anyone who is a minority of one must be convinced that he is insane.
