Gox climbing back towards $1100

So what the f*ck is up with this panic BS on the China news? It's not even bad news, is it?

Stupid people and weak hands. They must have this idea in their head that if Bitcoin isn't immediately accepted as the new world currency then it's already failed.

I hope they all lost a lot of money just now. We don't need people like that damaging the markets.
122  Economy / Speculation / Re: China Central Bank Officially Warns against Bitcoin on: December 05, 2013, 08:59:49 AM
China said it is a commodity that citizens are free to trade. They made sure to put that in there official letter. They are saying it can be used to trade and store of value but not as a currency. Oh boo hoo.

If anything that's good news! WTF is wrong with people? China didn't put their magic stamp of approval on it and worship Bitcoin as our new god? How horrible.
123  Economy / Speculation / Re: Wall Observer BTC/USD - Bitcoin price movement tracking & discussion on: December 05, 2013, 08:58:09 AM
Talk about overreacting. Wake me up when people calm down and realise that this isn't even particularly bad news and we're back at the ATH.
124  Economy / Economics / Re: Faith: Bitcoin vs Gold, Risky Investment? on: December 05, 2013, 06:57:24 AM

This worries me because remember Internet Protocol version 4? We thought the algorithms within IPV4 would hold up for the future when in fact it did not and we ended up developing a bunch of hacks like NAT so that the internet could handle more than 4 billion hosts.

What algorithms? IPv4 still does exactly what it was designed to. Comparing IPv4 to encryption potentially being broken makes absolutely no sense. It would've made more sense to mention something like MD5 or DES.

Less than $15 behind gold now, and no resistance in the books. This time we're going to fly past it rather than bouncing off like the last two times.
127  Bitcoin / Bitcoin Discussion / Re: Bitcoin Wallet Security Discussion on: December 04, 2013, 09:57:21 AM

Well what about a paper wallet you say? This is definitely easier. I can go to Bitaddress and print something quickly, but wait! I don't even have a printer at home. So what if I use the one at work? Uhh, that's like leaving a giant fingerprint left on the printer. And once again you ask what about getting a cheap printer to print at home? Once again I'm tasked with the issue of offline computers.

Write the key down with pen and paper. The only advantage of "printing" it is convenience, and you get fancy graphics on the paper.

If you don't trust your computers, just burn a Linux live CD (eg. Ubuntu), unplug the network cable, and boot off the CD. It will not modify or damage your existing operating system unless you deliberately tell it to. Then you can generate a private key using bitaddress or whatever other method you prefer.

In theory this still isn't absolutely 100% secure as there is malware which can persist across operating system reinstalls (BIOS implants), but the chances of this are so low that it's not even worth worrying about.

Someone keeps putting a 100-200 coin buy order right at the current market price on Gox, and moving the order up as the price rises. Choo choo?
129  Economy / Speculation / Re: Wall Observer BTC/USD - Bitcoin price movement tracking & discussion on: December 04, 2013, 08:39:58 AM
I get the feeling that another rally is about to start on Gox.

Dellusion -> Fear -> Panic  Grin

Allways the same. The Great Crash has finally arrived.
Drop the shitty Coins and join the heaven of lovely fiat.

Welcome to my ignore list.
132  Economy / Speculation / Re: The Great Crash on: December 01, 2013, 11:41:45 AM

133  Economy / Speculation / Re: Wall Observer BTC/USD - Bitcoin price movement tracking & discussion on: December 01, 2013, 11:37:22 AM
Gox will be $1150 within the hour.
134  Bitcoin / Bitcoin Discussion / Re: Bitcoin Transaction Time on: December 01, 2013, 10:57:10 AM
I've been waiting 3 hours now and my transaction still hasn't even appeared on blockchain.info, let alone had any confirmations...

Waste of a 0.0001 transaction fee. Should've just sent it for free and saved my money.
135  Economy / Service Announcements / Re: Criticize my tamper-proof paper wallet design... and steal 0.1 BTC if you can. on: December 01, 2013, 10:05:11 AM
Are you fairly secure about the paper wallets not being hacked?  Did you deposit only one time per paper or did you do a sample amount first before every paper?

I have not looked at the source code. However, I ran the generator offline on an airgapped computer and printer (has never been connected to the Internet, and never will be even in the future). So unless there is an obvious exploit in the code I trust that it's secure.

I didn't do sample deposits. My reason for having 10 wallets rather than one big one is that in the incredibly small chance that someone has an address collision with me (yeah I've seen all the graphs showing how small the odds are), I'd rather they only take 10% of my money rather than 100%.
136  Bitcoin / Legal / Re: Australian tax department discussing Bitcoin tax without consulting CCCB on: December 01, 2013, 09:57:12 AM
So... where are we with the CCCB and the ATO?

I've been consulting with a well respected tax firm (who have also sought information from a variety of other sources) and at present they cannot offer me any solid answer on how the ATO think btc->fiat transactions will be viewed.

They recommend if I was to cash out any btc to hold $46% in a term deposit and wait until May the following year (deadline for accountant submitted tax returns) and hope that the ATO has a decision before then... if they go down he CGT route then only pay 23%.

Anyone else got anything more solid?

I have no further insight to add - but how did it work for people in previous years? I imagine that people sold decent amounts of Bitcoin last financial year, and maybe even the FY before that too.

What if the ATO hasn't made any decision by mid 2014. Do you simply just put it down as CGT, or do you not declare anything as the ATO has not been able to provide advice on what Bitcoin is?

Also, on a related topic, is it possible to move to New Zealand for a year, sell Bitcoins there (as they have no CGT), then move back here with your money? Being out of Australia for a year means you won't be an Australian for tax purposes.
137  Economy / Service Announcements / Re: Criticize my tamper-proof paper wallet design... and steal 0.1 BTC if you can. on: December 01, 2013, 09:39:36 AM
Hey, Canton.

May I ask approximately how many wallets can fit in one bag (the ones in your website)?

Just curious as I might colour-code the wallets by sticker colour.

I have 10 of them in my bag (the free one that came with the stickers) and there's heaps of spare room. I think you could probably get 50 in there, maybe even more.
138  Alternate cryptocurrencies / Altcoin Discussion / Re: Mtgox to btce took three days i lost 850 ltc waiting. on: December 01, 2013, 09:18:19 AM
Should i sue or what?   THis is crazy!

Sue for what...? You can't just sue someone because you don't like them.
139  Economy / Speculation / Re: Wall Observer BTC/USD - Bitcoin price movement tracking & discussion on: December 01, 2013, 07:09:53 AM
Wonder if this is anything to do with 40k coins stolen by SMP. The same thing happened when SR shut down.
140  Economy / Speculation / Re: Wall Observer BTC/USD - Bitcoin price movement tracking & discussion on: November 30, 2013, 11:59:09 PM
Right. The point has been made - Bitcoin can hit 10k per coin without passing Facebook's market cap.

Ask yourself which one has more potential and you will start to see things a bit more clearly.

So very true. I think this every single time I hear about the "value" of some of these companies.

Instagram was sold not too long ago for many billions of dollars. How the fuck can they possibly expect to turn over a profit? By advertising to 14 year olds who think a grainy photo is cool?

Sometimes I think another dot com bubble is on the way. This is exactly what happened 13-14 years ago - people were throwing insane amounts of money at companies with no real business model (I realise that some bears will probably say the same thing about Bitcoin. It has legitimate potential. So, whatever).

I just hope Bitcoin doesn't get hurt when it all comes down. Maybe the stock market crashing would actually strengthen Bitcoin.
