121  Economy / Speculation / Re: THESE MARKETS on: December 19, 2013, 11:50:14 PM
BTC = overbought, china is out.

I thought prices were starting to go back up

Don't fall into the Bull trap.

not an employee. I was an IT contractor.
123  Economy / Speculation / Re: Why Hedge Funds will not throw money into BTC on: December 19, 2013, 07:59:29 PM
Exante is hedge fund based in Malta, apparently they like volatility.

they are a "smaller start up fund".
124  Economy / Speculation / Re: Why Hedge Funds will not throw money into BTC on: December 19, 2013, 07:56:32 PM

Sounds like another Troll giving his .02 cent... how many hedge funds are already taking this so called "risky" investment?

I just do not see huge money coming from large investment firms having experienced the climate they operate in. I do feel confident that there will be a price jump from smaller-medium size investors in the coming six months or so and I keep buying at low prices.
125  Economy / Speculation / Re: Why Hedge Funds will not throw money into BTC on: December 19, 2013, 06:22:03 PM
What you're describing is more classical mutual funds/general investment firms, not something like BlackStone's BAAM.

Could be. I worked for a place like DE Shaw, Black Rock, or Davidson Kempner Capital.

Hedge fund managers rather spend your money on hoes and drugs....True story....

They're living a dream, spending others money.

True. One of the managers fits this description. Though the rest do not.
126  Economy / Speculation / Why Hedge Funds will not throw money into BTC on: December 19, 2013, 05:43:59 PM
My theory is that hedge funds are not going to throw money into BTC anytime soon.

Having worked in IT for 6 years at one of the top 5 hedge fund companies, I learned how they operate. Basically, they DO NOT take risks! BTC is just too volatile for them to invest in. They may have one or two guys in the Value department looking at BTC and keeping an eye on it to see where the future may lead, but I am pretty certain they are not going to make any large investments, if any at all. People get fired all the time for even suggesting risky trades and for coming across as "gambling". I once asked a trader what he thought of investing in stem cells and he laughed saying they wouldn't even consider it being that its way too volatile, and as we know BTC is insanely volatile. What they would do is play with the arbitrage opportunities which may explain all the money going through China. There is basically no risk in doing that.

Anyway, this is just my .02. Im not a trader, though I do understand certain things having studied finance at one point. I wish I knew what I know now while I was working there. I do know their trades are very conservative and right now the chance for loss in BTC is too great. Clients would get concerned.

The smaller start-up funds in the industry could jump in to BTC, but I just cant see the big whales getting involved anytime soon unless more arbitrage opportunities pop up.
127  Economy / Speculation / Re: New bull trap has been set... on: December 19, 2013, 03:50:48 PM
I think a lot of people had market orders set at 500 that are being hit.

129  Economy / Speculation / Re: Timechart - Oct to Dec 2013 on: December 18, 2013, 05:45:00 AM
hadn't heard of the BIPS attack... can you elaborate?

http://www.coindesk.com/bitcoin-payment-processor-bips-attacked-1m-stolen/
-this was the BIPS news story on that day

-the intersting I find is the way US and China seemed to get involved at the same time and then go in complete opposite directions in accepting btc. Maybe Im reading into too much but it seems there is a lot of politics going on in the background that we will never hear about.
130  Economy / Speculation / Timechart - Oct to Dec 2013 on: December 18, 2013, 02:37:20 AM
just using this thread to post events in relation to price movement to maybe get some perspective.

note: I forgot to add: 'US says bitcoin is good' next to China bans banks.

131  Economy / Speculation / Re: why no harder crash ? on: December 18, 2013, 02:03:28 AM

a short stabilization means nothing at this point, the downtrend is pretty clear.

very true. I dont see how people can trade on m charts. You really have to look at at least a 4hr to get a good idea of whats going on. A day chart is even better since its usually a single news story that moves the market.

What Im still unsure of is why it shot up so quick in the first place. Kinda fishy.
132  Economy / Speculation / Re: How low can it go? on: December 18, 2013, 01:51:42 AM

who knows. I hope it drops to 200. I wouldn't call that segment favorable. Its more the opposite.
133  Economy / Economics / Re: Big news.Chinea central bank closed the internet transfer channel to market. on: December 17, 2013, 11:48:22 PM
Another FUD topic to try and push the price down - we already have at least 3 others.

If you bother to try it out yourself you'll find that btcchina is working fine (as has been pointed out in the other silly FUD topics).

(also interesting to note that these topics are mostly being created by "new accounts")

Its true. They are closing it off by end of Jan 2014.
134  Economy / Speculation / Re: What are the FACTS with the China transactions ban? on: December 17, 2013, 08:36:19 PM
All I see is that China banned third party payment processors. Chinese can still buy and sell bitcoin from the exchange using a bank only and ID needs to be provided. This is supposed to kill bitcoin in China?

They banned the banks from doing business with bitcoin on the 5th. now 3rd parties are banned. Its very difficult for the Chinese to buy bitcoin with Yuan now, without going to Hong Kong or using the black market.
135  Economy / Speculation / Re: Serious bitcoin price discussion. Bears only please. How far will it drop? on: December 17, 2013, 08:04:14 PM
The situation is definitely looking worse now...we may see sub $600 after all.

why is it looking worse? It looks like it is holding in the 700s. There has not been a huge sell off yet like on the 6th. I think a lot of weak hands were shaken at that time. Definitely a downtrend though. Maybe it will just be very slow? Who knows? Where's the new Mystery chart?
136  Economy / Speculation / Re: Reason for Today's Crash: China Bans Bitcoin Payment Processors on: December 17, 2013, 07:52:14 PM
Maybe they will find a way through the black market? Chinese probably expected this ban. I'm not seeing a massive price dip yet, given the news and am becoming more skeptical of a crash to the 3 or 500s.
137  Economy / Speculation / Re: Who is buying bitcoins at what many said in the past are cheap prices now? on: December 17, 2013, 06:06:14 PM
I'm going to start buying at 500. At 250, I'm 150% in.
138  Economy / Speculation / Re: Mystery Chart Says to Buy Btc now and sell in ~115.2 Days ( .1 BTC Reward) on: December 17, 2013, 06:12:08 AM
well, if its right, its going to drop down to about 550, then go up, back down again in about 3 weeks, and then hover around 800 till what looks like the next run in 45 days+

who knows. kinda creepy though.
139  Economy / Speculation / Re: Its looking Ugly, and will get worse! on: December 17, 2013, 04:05:38 AM
perspective:

2 months ago btc was at 110, and that was with China.
140  Economy / Exchanges / Re: Stay away from Coinbase on: December 17, 2013, 03:34:11 AM
Coinbase is US based and US Venture backed company.   Their investors want them to go public or get bought out at some point.  They are in this to make money and in a lot of respects that seems to be at odds with the whole idea of digital alt currency.

We are in the process of thinking through an anti-Coinbase.   Faster processing times, less transaction fees, Non-US, No venture funding etc.    Idea would be this would be a platform built by people in the community for the community to use.   Feel free to PM if of interest to you to discuss further.

I really prefer US based, US venture funded, because of the fact that I can get legal issue solved.

Good point.
