We just hit 5000 BTC in volume! Breaking all previous records Grin

I am really feeling bad that XMR is a Pump and Dump scam like DGB, that is fact.
123  Alternate cryptocurrencies / Speculation (Altcoins) / Re: [XMR] Monero Speculation on: August 20, 2016, 10:00:24 PM
We're at $2.46 ... can we please not talk about $1000?

The most likely scenario is that XMR will fail.

How?
Probably the most likely scenario would be better technology replacing XMR, or simply something like zcash that is better marketed and becomes mass adopted while XMR stagnates into nothing.

I'm pleased to see my prediction come true so soon, despite no GUI. That the two largest dark markets are now looking into integrating monero is fantastic. If there was any event that really got bitcoin into mainstream media it was Silk Road. I don't think the effect on Monero will be the same as media has already spun that story. But it seems to me the darknet market is quite large (e.g 100k subs on reddit), so usage in itself could bring us a lot of new users, and a higher price. But more importantly we will probably see a great influx of volume and that makes monero better for everyone, even without price increases.

These news alone makes me incredible bullish, without even taking into consideration that RingCT is also coming up, which will make the anonymity of monero godly.

Every single one who bought and held monero since September 11th 2014 is now in profit. The major resistance is broken. People buying in today will likely have a higher target for selling, so I think we can easily continue from here to 500k+ XMR. I dare not predict where this will top out.

Also, due to the 1000 XMR withdraw limit on poloniex it can be time consuming to withdraw larger amounts. I've written a simple script that let's you withdraw tens of thousands of XMR super quick. https://github.com/TheKoziTwo/poloniex-mass-withdraw

As a side note, I have begun market making in bitsquare and will continue for the next weeks to increase bids/asks. The trading there has started to pick up, and I encourage everyone to try it out. An anonymous crypto needs a way to exchange with full privacy. With bitsquare there is no id requirements and connections are routed through Tor. As a bonus you don't risk your funds with a third party. It can now even be installed on raspberry pi, so it is cheap to keep an instance running 24/7.

I suppose it will be time for a new FFS thread for him soon™.
I think we should do it now. Let's fund the completion of RingCT, beta test and release.

You guys are knowingly receiving proceeds from crime. Anyone who post his address here is inviting a knock on the door from the FEDS. Think before you post.
Looks like the coins are from 2013:
https://blockchain.info/address/13tikBdmMVkyuykDVNmv3tTr8YkVN3Xrut

Seem unlikely that this is related to bitfinex hack. But, if it turns out the coins are actually from the hacker then it's just a matter of returning them. Nothing wrong with taking the proceeds of crime and returning it to the rightful owner.

any news on the GUI? ... Q3 maybe ...
Beta version is ready, we are only waiting for binaries at this point. You can compile Monero with GUI if you want to try it right now. Could still be some bugs to fix though.

Regarding when?

Soon Wink
129  Alternate cryptocurrencies / Speculation (Altcoins) / Re: [XMR] Monero Speculation on: July 17, 2016, 03:42:33 PM
Wow, I cannot believe it. Now it looks the price has started the usual thing, declining. If I bought when I was told here I would be losing now.
The value of my current Monero declines but it doesn't matter me. Now it is down 2.47 % and the today's chart look hopeless.
It's been consolidating in this range ~0.0029-0.0031 for almost two weeks. Seems fine to me.

^^^That is what happens when you don't have a clue, and thus fail.

WOW...

clueless would say... nice wallet you got there bro

IMPORTANT ANNOUNCEMENT FOR ALL SERVICE PROVIDERS:

I basically hacked cryptonic.net today as I was able to get their wallet seed and transfer out 2380 XMR. I will of course return the funds to the owner, the only reason I transferred them out is to safe keep them from other potential attackers.

This is something that has been worrying me for a while, but it was only today after receiving a PM from a guy asking for help that I decided to go through the effort. I scanned the monero network, a total of 318 IP's on port 18082. I found 2 matches, and only 1 that I was able to attack. But there could be more vulnerable services out there running on different ports.

When you're running the wallet in rpc mode (you can do that by binding the port) for example like this:
Code:
./simplewallet --wallet-file mywallet.dat --password demo123 --rpc-bind-port 18082

Your wallet will be able to respond to RPC calls. What is very important to know is that the RPC calls are NOT password protected. The password I specified in my example (demo123) only protects the wallet. Once the wallet is running as rpc server it will accept incoming calls. Therefore your port 18082 MUST BE CLOSED (or whatever port you use to run the wallet server). This way you can only access the RPC from localhost.

The RPC has calls like "query_key" where you can retrive view_key or the mnemonic seed. That's what I used, but I could also have used commands like "transfer" to take the funds.

This does not affect normal wallets, only if you run it in server mode like I explained above.

As of right now I'd advise people to wait with purchases on cryptonic until the owner has responded and secured his wallet.

It doesn't appear to be any major issue at the moment as I only found this 1 wallet vulnerable, but again I don't know how many are running servers on different ports and I think it's best this info is out in the open so admins can secure their wallets correctly. It's very simple, just make sure that the port you bind your wallet to is closed.
It's not really a problem with the wallet itself, it works just fine. Perhaps it's rather lack of documentation that is the issue here. In any case it turns out it most likely also requires IP to be bound for this hack to work, which makes it even less likely. When you reach the point that you bind both IP and port and communicate with your wallet from a different server most admins will realize that's not a safe way to do it. This is all about education really, anything can be insecure in the wrong hands. Also 0MQ is in development and will replace the current rpc at some point.

UPDATE: cryptonic.net is no longer compromised. All funds has been returned to the owner.

That's a bug. It's supposed to bind to loopback if you don't supply --rpc-bind-ip with another one. I will fix.

Edit: works fine here. Either that server was specifically told to listen inbound, or if you can repro it, file a bug with full command line and OS etc.
I've not tested it myself. I guess you're right, and it was also bound to IP. That makes it a little less dangerous.

Code:
The GUI is currently functional for sending and receiving, some stuff like advanced options have to be finished but if you guys want you can already try and compile it from ilya´s github.
Source

Do you think it will affect on the price? Demand need to be sourced from somewhere. Some bigger guys need to buy in to collect the loose coins from the weak hands.

Yes I do. I think there is a significant non-technical crowd we can cater to. People who have been stuck in less optimal coins such as dash. It will allow all the moon kids to jump on board. Perhaps not the best crowd to have on board you may say, but a small technical crowd like we have in monero just doesn't cut it. We want to grow big, but we are only so many. If we have learned anything from watching shitcoins, it's that there is power in numbers, a swarm of people can spread the word a lot faster and bring the price up a lot higher than a few monero whales can. I hate to be the guy to say this, but the moon kids can actually serve a purpose if we want the attention we deserve. I am tired of monero, the best coin when it comes to anonymity, being consistently ignored by big voices in this space. I think the GUI can change that, as a step towards mass adoption.

There's a second reason I think it will affect the price and that's getting monero out of the exchanges. Very many have left their moneroj on the exchange because they're not comfortable with cli. Trust me, it's a lot easier to dump when all you have to do is click sell versus digging the coins out from cold storage. This will result in less selling pressure.

Why is MXR rising this days? Is there any god news?

I just don't have luck with this coin, always sell it to early with some lose this time. It was just 10 days ago, take Lisk for it who is actually down now  Angry
Yes... the GUI will be here

It seems we could be testing .0028 before resuming the slow pace, sane bull run. What are your short term projections?

You can dump >41000 XMR to 288k if you like gambling.  Some folks do.

Aaaand... somebody did.  LOL.  It will be fun to watch them race to cover the loss.

Your bullishness makes me nervous.

There are short sellers trying to take it down now.  You should be encouraged, because that means cheap now, higher later.

There doesn't appear to be any shorts of significance today. Not sure where you're getting that info. You can try and spot shorts here. It seems to me that whoever was behind the ~70k XMR dumped today did so out of their own stash.

But despite 70k dumped the price didn't even flinch. That's pretty amazing Smiley

Hello,

Nice to see you back now as your selling targets are approaching.  Smiley

I've not given any targets so you must assume I have targets in the same area as last rally. I don't.
