mtgox, can u offer withdraws via paypal?  withdraws won't have chargebacks.  if no, then why not?
1202  Bitcoin / Bitcoin Discussion / Re: Bitcoin in RALLY mode on: October 27, 2010, 10:07:45 PM
Bitcoin is on a rally again! The exchange on mtgox surged to 60,000 bitcoins in the last 24 hours!

MtGox is back in business.

Also, a dollar will now only buy you 5.15 bitcoins. The bitcoin economy is now worth 854344 dollars! We're on our way to a million dollar economy! Yippie!

I noticed too. It's very exciting.  We on our way to reach quarter (25 cents) parity.

Maybe it's a little naive, but why not generate some addresses on a wallet held on a USB stick, safely store it somewhere and then send coins to these adresses ? the risk would be limited to someone actually getting a hold of the physical stick.

or for more safety, do it on a bunch of them, but store the wallet encrypted and learn the private key by heart =)

Yes that is what I did.  I have two wallets.  One is essentially a "savings" account which is encrypted which I don't plan to spend, only receive.  The other is the wallet which I consider the "checking" account.  The checking account has less bitcoins in it and is not encrypted.
1204  Bitcoin / Bitcoin Discussion / Re: Bitcoin Learning on: October 27, 2010, 12:00:36 AM
I have invested some of my wealth in bitcoins. It's an amount I can afford to lose but it's still big enough that it would hurt if I lost it.

This has forced me to think carefully about how to backup up my wallet.dat files in a way that a) the chance of losing the data is very small and b) the chance that a third party can somehow gain access to that data is very small.

This proved trickier than I thought because a) and b) are somewhat conflicting. I was forced to learn the basics of cryptography and computer security in the process. (I strongly recommend even the non-geek Bitcoin user to read up on these topics as dauting as they may seem at first).

Agreed, though I think "average users" will choose easier routes such as mybitcoin.com.

I have learned to pick who you can trust carefully when buying bitcoins.

However, I don't trust anyone holding onto my bitcoins.  Someone could get to the server, the house could burn down, who knows.  I have used TrueCrypt and have three copies of my wallet, all encrypted.  I put them on two USB sticks and plan to hide them in different places for the long term too.

1210  Economy / Marketplace / Re: Proposal: Mt. Gox + Bitcoin4Cash + Bitcoin2Cash = PayPal Problem Solved! on: October 19, 2010, 08:29:08 PM
Transferring bitcoins between users is not so interesting because it is already possible to get bitcoins in and out.  Much more interesting is that the API also allows transferring USD between users.

I have around $3000 that I'd like to withdraw from Mt. Gox.  If anyone is looking to get money into Mt. Gox, perhaps we can work out a deal.

Not personally interested, but that is a great idea! Maybe mtgox could get a small fee for the escrow service? He would assert the one sending USD out that he had received USDs from the other party, so it was safe for actual US$ to change hands. Just a thought...

Mt. Gox is in a great position to do many needed services.  I hope the grand vision is recognized and implemented.  It will not only help the bitcoin community, but it could also help Mt. Gox if he decides to monetize.
1211  Economy / Marketplace / Re: Proposal: Mt. Gox + Bitcoin4Cash + Bitcoin2Cash = PayPal Problem Solved! on: October 19, 2010, 06:48:54 PM
It looks like Mt Gox has an API for Mt Gox users to send bitcoins directly to other Mt Gox users.

Really?  where?  You are referring to the ability to withdraw bitcoins to any bitcoin address?

Log in and click on ur username. Click in Payment API
1212  Economy / Marketplace / Re: Proposal: Mt. Gox + Bitcoin4Cash + Bitcoin2Cash = PayPal Problem Solved! on: October 19, 2010, 03:19:19 PM

It looks like Mt Gox has an API for Mt Gox users to send bitcoins directly to other Mt Gox users.  So if it was ok with bitcoin4cash, then we could send cash to him and he could add bitcoins to a specific Mt Gox account.

What is the difference if bitcoin4cash just sends you bitcoins and you add it to mt. gox yourself?

Right that is even better. :-)

Maybe bitcoin4cash could completely integrate with Mt Gox so there aren't two middle mans.  Less confusing for newbies.
1213  Economy / Marketplace / Re: Proposal: Mt. Gox + Bitcoin4Cash + Bitcoin2Cash = PayPal Problem Solved! on: October 19, 2010, 02:36:41 PM
This doesn't require any formal co-operation between MtGox and Bitcoin{2,4}Cash because you can already do it that way yourself if you trust those services and the postal service.

It looks like Mt Gox has an API for Mt Gox users to send bitcoins directly to other Mt Gox users.  So if it was ok with bitcoin4cash, then we could send cash to him and he could add bitcoins to a specific Mt Gox account.

As for withdraws it would just work in the opposite direction and bitcoin4cash would mail cash to the user.
1214  Economy / Marketplace / Re: Proposal: Mt. Gox + Bitcoin4Cash + Bitcoin2Cash = PayPal Problem Solved! on: October 18, 2010, 09:27:44 PM
The problem isn't withdrawals from mt. gox, it is the chargebacks from buyers. I don't see any problems arising if mt. gox were to use paypal for withdrawals only. Individuals that want to buy bitcoins with cash can do so freely and then put the coins onto the market. Individuals that want cash for their coin shouldn't put it on the market and find an alternate option.

For the cash that's caught in the system now, it could be a possibility. I don't see it as a permanent fix though.

Good point on the withdraws.  I'd like to see Mt. Gox set up withdraws on PayPal if possible since there would never be any charge backs.  Well, Mt. Gox?
1215  Economy / Marketplace / Re: Proposal: Mt. Gox + Bitcoin4Cash + Bitcoin2Cash = PayPal Problem Solved! on: October 18, 2010, 09:22:01 PM
It would be a start...it's good to have more than one way to fund an account in case something awful happens.
1216  Economy / Marketplace / Proposal: Mt. Gox + Bitcoin4Cash + Bitcoin2Cash = PayPal Problem Solved! on: October 18, 2010, 09:13:40 PM
Since Mt. Gox is trying to find a way to handle cash transactions, maybe he could work with Bitcoin4Cash (or Bitcoin2Cash) to handle cash.  Then for users who'd like to get or send cash via mail it would work out for everyone.

Just an idea.

1218  Bitcoin / Bitcoin Discussion / Re: !Strong leadership and organization needed to keep BITCOINS successful on: October 15, 2010, 06:23:53 PM
I think it's a good idea but how can we gauge a level of commitment?  It's easy to say "yes, I'll do it" but it there were an incentive for the leaders besides honor and respect, it would encourage more activity, imho.  right now people do this because it's 'fun'.  if it starts to feel like work then people want more, like getting paid with bitcoins.  if there was a way to compensate these chosen leaders...then...

This is awesome, I hope to become a zombie to a botnet server soon (since I don't think I have the hardware and bandwidth to support a super server).
