501  Economy / Trading Discussion / Re: A public plea for help regarding Bitcoinica and my 24,841 BTC on: July 13, 2012, 05:17:42 PM
This is just a hunch but maybe try posting this plea in he Russian forums.
502  Bitcoin / Bitcoin Discussion / Re: Is a bitcoin credit union feasible ? on: July 11, 2012, 09:27:33 PM
This is very feasible.  Right now I'm invested in the Gamma fund which has about $70K worth of bitcoins.  The Gamma fund operators are loaning out money (with interest).  This is sort of like a bitcoin credit union.
503  Bitcoin / Project Development / Re: [VIDEO] Bitinstant Tutorial by LadyBytes on: July 09, 2012, 11:37:13 PM
People always have a choice to buy bitcoins from bitinstant or somewhere else.  There are many options.  bitinstant is just another way to get bitcoins really quick at a premium.  Some people are willing to pay the 3-4% to get bitcoins really quick.  What's their motto?  "Time is money".

In fact, you could even start a bitcoin business selling bitcoins and no one is stopping you.
In fact, indeed! Here is your big chance to promote some competition, Charlie, which is reported to be so beneficial to any business sector!  Cheesy

Do tell jimbobway how many of those "many options" are "a legal business" such as yours...

Please tell us how easy it is to "start a bitcoin business selling bitcoins" in your case in America, which is what you call "legal", how low the cost of entry is, and how no one will be stopping you for any reason...  Cheesy

He does not need to tell me.  Anyone can do the research to find out how to get bitcoins.  I prefer to buy mining hardware to get bitcoins.
504  Bitcoin / Project Development / Re: [VIDEO] Bitinstant Tutorial by LadyBytes on: July 09, 2012, 10:52:37 PM
Without the possibility of being able to get your first Bitcoins from the local store down your block, I say a big % of Bitcoiners wouldn't have gotten into Bitcoin since it was too difficult to buy them.

The point of Bitcoin is once you have them, your free to do what you want. There are no middlemen in Bitcoin, but there could be an opportunity for middlemen to help first timers get Bitcoin.

Without the dozens of startups within Bitcoin, it would be no where where it is today. Bitcoin is not just a currency, and your selfish for saying that, Bitcoin is an economy. Bitcoin puts food on the tables of our employees and their families. Bitinstant gives salaries and jobs to dozens of people around the world, all because of Bitcoin.

There is something you keep missing and Im having to repeat myself. We have costs and fees associated with transfers. On a 4% transfer, we are paying over 3%. Do you want us to close up shop? I don't think so.

Sure, my current business model may not be the ideal for what Bitcoins ultimate goal is, but for now we need to get Bitcoin into the hands of as many people as possible and Bitinstant has sold over 200,000 BTC in the past few months.
Even for me it's impossible to miss the giant "costs and fees associated with the transfers" through the chain of middlemen you terminate.  Cheesy

BTW, if we are going to split hairs, rather than Bitcoin putting money on your employees table, it's your customers taking food off their own table and giving it to your chain of middlemen.

If there is one thing the recent years have shown, it's that financial middlemen (banks, credit companies, et al) have little regard whose table they clear of food or whose shop they close, as long as they make their quick buck "for now..."

Just saying that, since you mentioned being selfish, in a business that is all about selfishness...  Cheesy So, you'll have to excuse my lack of empathy for your industry in general...

You stated that "big % of Bitcoiners wouldn't have gotten into Bitcoin" without middlemen like you. If that's true, as opposed to your self-serving PR, my simple point remains:

"a big % of Bitcoiners" have simply xchanged the traditional, expensive middlemen chains for even more expensive new middlemen chains terminated by BitInstant, et al...

505  Bitcoin / Bitcoin Discussion / Re: Why bitcoin is in big trouble and is ultimately doomed! on: July 09, 2012, 07:07:55 PM
Suggest that OP do some research on older threads before posting.  The same arguments are made over and over.  Nothing new here.
506  Bitcoin / Bitcoin Discussion / Re: Why bitcoin will ultimately fail? on: July 09, 2012, 04:36:03 PM
OP is asking for donations while saying bitcoin is doomed.  Hypocrite.
507  Bitcoin / Bitcoin Discussion / Re: New wiki page on ripple currency exchanges on: July 08, 2012, 07:16:35 PM
I think we need a P2P library that encapsulates mining, alt-mining chains, storing of data etc.  It is difficult for most developers to rebuild the core bitcoin logic, and it seems like there is a need to do it over and over.  For example there is now Bitcoin, Namecoin, and Ripple Exchange that require this core logic and it is replicated each time.  If someone could develop a P2P library it could unleash another wave of P2P applications including this ripple exchange.
508  Bitcoin / Bitcoin Discussion / Re: Bitcoin Startup List. on: July 05, 2012, 03:39:12 AM
System D not good enough for this list?
509  Bitcoin / Bitcoin Discussion / Re: Bitcoin vs. the Banks on: July 05, 2012, 03:37:42 AM
Hating on banks is too mainstream in the bitcoin comminity so Matt attempts to be hipsterish and go against mainstream.
510  Economy / Marketplace / Re: We're up to something on: July 03, 2012, 04:07:33 AM
Are you acquiring Bitcoinica?  Tongue
511  Economy / Securities / Re: [Investment fund] Gamma Bitcoin Fund on: July 02, 2012, 10:28:39 PM
We have invested in two new and interesting projects, the first of them is the hand held Bitcoin device called Ellet, which we have given 3000$ in a loan to them for a rate of 2.7% a week (denominated in USD). This is a great deal and I feel like it helps the community and the effort of producing a great product Smiley For more info about Ellet have a look at https://bitcointalk.org/index.php?topic=85931.0
The other project we have taken part of if the Bitcoin Magazine, we have purchase 1.25% of the company for 2500$ Smiley, I think it's a great company with huge potentials. They have some very good staff and have produced a lovely product, hence I think it's a great deal and it will also help support the growth and mainstream acceptance of Bitcoins, perfect for the fund Cheesy.
If there's any questions or concerns please do ask.
//DeaDTerra

1.) Did Matt specify a time-frame on when he was going to repay the $3000 loan back?

2.) So now that GBF owns 1.25% of Bitcoin Magazine, is this in GLBSE?  Is there a dividend of some sort?  If you wanted to liquidate your shares could you?

Thanks.

Do you have contingency plans in case something unexpected happens to you?  Thx.
513  Bitcoin / Bitcoin Discussion / Re: The difference between government instituted currencies and Bitcoin is huge. on: June 27, 2012, 04:49:13 PM
sounds like you should stick with usd.  bitcoin at this point in time is not ready for Gavin's grandma but when it is perhaps you will be ready to use it.

welcome to the real world, mi amigo.  yes there is greed all around us. I argue, however, that wallstreet has more greed than bitcoiners.

Why are you speaking to me in Spanish? I'm not Hispanic. and please refrain from "welcoming" me anywhere. You are nobody besides a poster on a Bitcoin forum. What authority do you have to welcome me anywhere? and yea, argue all you want. I'm not arguing anything just stated how I feel. If my opinions offend you... well maybe you're the one who needs a reality check. Opinions are all around us. Speaking of grandmothers, my grandmother is more tolerant than some of you.

This guy is a plant, maybe someone should ban him for being disingenuous.   I am serious.

What is even more shocking is he is not a plant and actually believes and acts this way in real life.  I think a lot of people here are trying to explain to him how bitcoin works but he has a victim mentality and believes the forum and all of humanity is trying to get him.  In fact, on one of my posts I was actually agreeing with him but he played the victim and argued with me.

You're the type of person who would kill someone for their own good.

As a United States citizen I have no choice but to pay taxes to fund wars to keep our freedom.  Freedom isn't free.

515  Alternate cryptocurrencies / Announcements (Altcoins) / Re: [ANN] Freicoin: demurrage crypto-currency from the Occupy movement (crowdfund) on: June 27, 2012, 02:02:19 PM
If I run the freicoin client once a year will I get my portion of the 4.4%?  I would do that.

My first impression of freicoin was 'trick coin'.  The bitcoin elite are hoarders but the want a society with growth.  This is sort of like when the gold standard was lifted and the dollar was free floated. The analogy here is bitcoin is gold and freicoin is USD.
516  Bitcoin / Bitcoin Discussion / Re: The difference between government instituted currencies and Bitcoin is huge. on: June 26, 2012, 03:19:51 PM
That was a huge post by SimonL.  SimonL went out of his way to explain the differences between USD and bitcoin.  If that doesn't budge ridgemont then nothing will.  Although ridgemont did admit bitcoins have black market uses.

Ha. This is the internets where authority is not required, my friend.

Im not offended. Btw, all I did was confirm everything you said.  I agrees there is greed.  I agree that bitcoin may not be for you.

ridgemont, ok, so the USA is responsible
for USD.  what about gold? who is
responsible for gold?
