1221  Bitcoin / Project Development / [ATTN] One of the TOP Projects should be MyBitcoin Competition on: July 16, 2011, 01:14:33 PM
Please see this http://forum.bitcoin.org/index.php?topic=29055.0

You have people who want the service

A lot who do not trust the current option/s (some are still being worked on, maybe could use assistance from more people)

People who still use and "trust" the service, as you can see, do not even fully back or trust the service.  It comes down to "it works for me"

Be honest with yourselves in your lives.  When you are talking about a product or service with a family or friend, and something fucks up for them, but for you everything is fine, you give a 'well it works for me' type response.  Deep down you know that is a shit response that means you could give a fuck less.   Well established old foggy users of MyBitcoin, start giving a fuck more please.   This is going to be a stumbling block in progression, do you want the value of that made up money to go up, stay still, or fade away.  As I see MyBitcoin as a "Gox" like site in the sense that in it's field, it is the top dog, so when shit happens with it, it will effect people even indirectly sometimes.

Disclaimer that is half this post - I have not used MyBitcoin, at this point I will not be, that thread was started out as a parody of a thread about deepbit https://forum.bitcoin.org/index.php?topic=29018.0, but on the side having my true curiosities there.  I am saddened by the results, only again, because so many 'known' member use the service and not a meep about it as long as things are running smooth. I can't be too harsh about, you have to be realistic, if they have shitload of money in this thing and it works, why fix what isn't broke, that is fine for you all.   I am saying it is broke and I am not sure how to fix it, nor do I care now, let's get competition going on.

I understand this thread might be weird depending on what you use MyBitcoin for, whether just as a simple e-Wallet or something you used a business solution, I hope this thread applies to all of you honestly.   Please no one take this as MyBitcoin hate, but more MyBitcon wtf.   I honesty hope to promote again merchants that use the service, but right now promoting those merchants and even traders using MyBitcoin is promoting MyBitcoin use, which I know I can't do.

1224  Bitcoin / Bitcoin Discussion / Re: Slow News Month For Bitcoin? on: July 16, 2011, 12:28:07 PM
We need some sort of wrapper for the everyday moron. You know, something to hid concepts like cryptography, and all the stuff that the mindless masses give up on.
Ideally everything about bitcoin and how it works should be wrapped up behind a symbol or a button that could be used with the swipe of a finger. Something that
a drunk burger flipper could do at 3 am.
Bitcoin itself needs to be slightly more secure before it can be taken by the public as something that can be used with the swipe of a finger, because that is not something that should be advertised to the public at this point without the stress of security.

1226  Bitcoin / Bitcoin Discussion / Re: Is This Bitcoin Weekly Comic Crap? on: July 16, 2011, 11:49:04 AM
I like the comic.

Do not have the writer change because it is his art, unless Joey Dangerous wants to start catering to whatever audience must be messaging him or you about this (I mean, this stems from somewhere).  I think I've said it before though, without even having to mention a specific strip, the comics from Bitcoin Weekly have always felt super super strong in almost a blind Bitcoin support sometimes with attitude or feeling, so if I could critique them, I would say that, but even saying that I enjoy the comic and don't feel that is a huge negative, in fact, that is what makes the comic strip unique to me.

Add more comic strips.    What newspaper only has one comic anyways?   I have no doubts there are plenty of artists that would donate a comic strip to your site for free, it exposes themselves and gives people more reason to come to the site for the big draw of the full on Weekly magazine.

More contributions maybe.  Variety for those who aren't fans of his.  I like his work.

I like http://z1x.dk/'s a lot.

I want more Bitcoin webcomics.
1227  Bitcoin / Bitcoin Discussion / Re: Bitcoin vs MSFT, GOOG, AMZN, AAPL, ORCL on: July 16, 2011, 11:42:57 AM
So where do donations go to take the Bitcoin.org servers into space already, this is all bullshit.

Or just throw it on that crazy onion routin' system all the kids are down with.
1228  Bitcoin / Bitcoin Discussion / Re: Gavin and Bruce doing Satoshi dirty work? on: July 16, 2011, 11:41:11 AM
I agree with theories that he is under another user name still posting, why not, this is his baby.

1229  Bitcoin / Bitcoin Discussion / Re: the owner of http://www.bitcoinmap.com/ please response! on: July 16, 2011, 11:36:52 AM
Noticed that link in Stephen Gornick' signature http://forum.bitcoin.org/index.php?action=profile;u=2228, I am not claiming he is the maker
1230  Bitcoin / Bitcoin Discussion / Re: Bitcoin vs MSFT, GOOG, AMZN, AAPL, ORCL on: July 16, 2011, 11:33:40 AM
Did not see this on reddit or elsewhere yet, thanks for posting it, enjoy the Bitcoin mix (and thanks for that bonkersworld link Matt, this comic strip is much better because of the remix lol)
1231  Bitcoin / Bitcoin Discussion / Re: I don't trust mybitcoin, but how come so many trust it? on: July 16, 2011, 11:30:49 AM
Sometimes its easier to trust a 3rd party (that has a working history) than worry about it yourself.
I think that is all we are looking for out of this thread, a 3rd party to actually trust.
1232  Bitcoin / Bitcoin Discussion / Re: I don't trust mybitcoin, but how come so many trust it? on: July 16, 2011, 03:27:54 AM
I now wish some of the older members would find alternatives.  Maybe one of the other start ups needs the help of an already established merchant to get their name out there.  This is disappointing, I always thought MyBitcoin was the big game in town.  And I believe it is.  Please someone attempt to represent or defend them Sad
1233  Bitcoin / Bitcoin Discussion / Re: I don't trust mybitcoin, but how come so many trust it? on: July 16, 2011, 12:57:12 AM
so buy bitcoinuser.com from me and make something of it.
lol, never change
1234  Bitcoin / Bitcoin Discussion / Re: "TheInternet" Bot - Doing Something with Trades - How long? What happens after? on: July 15, 2011, 09:28:23 PM
Regarding TraderTimm's comment about the reported 'net worth':
The periods in time where it appears that the reported net worth is tracking the price of BTC simply means that the bot is holding inventory, waiting for the target price to be reached. Net worth isn't used anywhere in the GA algo, it's only reported as a visual sanity check. And as i mentioned in the original thread, as the GA constantly updates to adapt to new data, the reported 'net worth' will constantly change. The system is internally weighted (within the fitness function) to favor more recent trades. Therfore, the reported net worth should not be taken as an indicator of performance of the system over time. It's was simply a snapshot in time. Also, at no time was the complete account balance in play which further diminishes it value in calculating ROI.

Regarding HideousBeastManGuy comment: "You cannot run HFTs unless you have Fill-Or-Kill (FOK) orders."

I do have that functionality! While not officially supported in the MtGox API, it took almost no effort to implement in software. I have automatic order cancellation (buy wait), stop loss, stop age, commit to sell target and sell target prices built into my trade platform.
I am limited in two ways to meet the true definition of HFT - Latency in the MtGox API & volume/volatility. Notice that neither one of them have anything to do with my system. While it can be argued that I am not currently meeting the true definition of HFT, my system IS HFT ready. Once user keys are re enabled through the websocket, that only leaves volume/volatility as the limiting factor.
That being said, the bot currently averages 100 trades a day in a throttled state (used for debugging) with about 600 total trades.

He also said: "Also, I'm not sure I subscribe to the whole genetic algorithm being something that can be applied to markets, as it seems to me you'd have a massive hurdle in that the algorithm would want to choose the best winners on a curve-fitting basis. Perhaps he's taken measures to avoid this"

Simpleton fitness functions will always curve fit. It's funny how computers do exactly what you tell them. This is why, in my original post, I talked about the difficulty in coming up with a suitable fitness function.
This is probably why 90% of people who will / or ever have tried to tackle GAs for market trading have or will give up. If you ever hear of anyone trash GAs as being limited or worthless, I'd bet money it's because they couldn't develop a suitable fitness function.

At this point I could probably write a book called 'Fitness Functions: I bet your doing it wrong' with everything I've learned.

Anyway, yeah I have taken multiple measures to avoid curve fitting. I have a power function for non linear age weighting, an exponential function for non linear trade period weighting and the latest hack is market variance detection (True Range) run through a histogram to split the GA system into variance quartiles. Simulated buy orders are now gated to the quartile linked gene being tested. Now I can optimize for multiple market conditions in parallel and switch active strategies on the fly dependent on current market conditions. There are a couple of other key optimizations I made to avoid curve fitting, but this post is getting too long.

I do however agree with this: "Writing a long-run winning bot (that is 1000+ trades at a minimum) is nearly impossible with no prior knowledge of trading, with only a few exceptions."

I'm not the exception, I did have 'prior knowledge'.

Yes, I hope the impression so far isn't that they are necessarily a scam, but this is not a tight ship for sure, all the users who still use them are attesting to that at the moment.

Follow up with Rupert Murdoch apology at http://content.usatoday.com/communities/ondeadline/post/2011/07/a-shaken-rupert-murdoch-meets-with-family-of-murdered-girl/1

A quick portion of this follow up

Quote
The Dowler phone-hacking case, which broke two weeks ago, has engulfed the Murdoch media operation in Britain, and prompted him to abandon an attempt to take over the BSkyB satellite TV operation. He also shut down the 168-year-old News of the World.

In the Dowler case, a private investigator hacked the voice mail of the missing 13-year-old Milly. The investigator went so far as to delete messages when her voice mail got full in order to receive more calls.

That, in turn, gave the Dowlers false hope that the girl, who was murdered, was still alive and using her phone. It also complicated the police investigation.

Sad
1237  Other / Beginners & Help / Re: My take on a Bitcoin "Coin" on: July 15, 2011, 05:25:14 PM
Ah the evolution of a digital coin into the real world.

I like the idea of that barcode edge.  Crazy creative.  It makes the coin look aesthetically horrible, but fuck it.
1238  Bitcoin / Bitcoin Discussion / Re: I don't trust mybitcoin, but how come so many trust it? on: July 15, 2011, 05:02:34 PM
If one would use these type of "problems" as an excuse not to use a service i just ask this:
WHY IS MTGOX STILL IN BUSINESS?
Established user base and lack of choices, in fact, the same exact reason why MyBitCoin is in business from what I can gather, and so far this thread is proving it big time.  I really wish it wasn't.
1239  Economy / Speculation / Re: Bitcoin Shrinking - The Long View on: July 15, 2011, 04:59:52 PM
+ Bitcoin just enjoyed more media exposure over the past 3 months than can reasonably be expected to occur anywhere in the near future. There's just nothing newsworthy forthcoming unless there is something scandalous that happens again, and we're just about out of interesting scandals. We've made the rounds from illegal purchasing to hacking to market failures.
Thread fail right away, not a fact at all, can't take the rest of your post seriously now.
1240  Bitcoin / Bitcoin Discussion / Re: I don't trust mybitcoin, but how come so many trust it? on: July 15, 2011, 04:48:10 PM
Hmmm... looks like something is wrong with my calculation of feedback score.  They shouldn't have 100% - they should have 25%.
Neutrals don't count, without any negatives there, it is all positive.    Those negatives are showing in the wrong spot.  I have not seen that site but that hopefully will be an easy fix.
