1361  Other / Beginners & Help / Re: How can i secure my account? on: May 16, 2022, 04:20:41 PM
Make sure you use a strong password for both here and your email account and make sure you stake an address you can control and one that's kept secure (eg on hardware or an encrypted wallet on a device that only have trusted/well known software installed).

A strong password should be something that's hard to guess by anyone and could be randomised to do this. I'd recommend searching for advice on making a strong password, if you don't have any ideas on what to use you can use the first 6-8 words of a newly generated random bip39 mnemonic (from a trusted wallet software and one that won't be used to store funds) as a password.
1362  Bitcoin / Electrum / Re: Electrum transfer bitcoin to unknow adress bc1 on: May 16, 2022, 02:50:16 PM
There was a phishing attack on electrum wallets where a popup got people to download software that was a scam wallet which sent funds to the scammer group.

Depending on when you downloaded your wallet in 2019, you might've fallen victim to this as normal electrum servers started blocking electrum clients connections to stop being ddosed (there mightve been some normal nodes still running too though and you just got unlucky).

Depending on your level of security you might want to try to use a different computer when dealing with bitcoin wallets from now on, reinstall your os to wipe apps you don't need or trust or just start uninstall ing things that might've compromised your system.

Antivirus may be good for retrospective cleansing too (they might not pick up malware as soon as it drops but they'll be able to get it later - eg wait a week or two before installing an update on software).
1363  Other / Beginners & Help / Re: How to avoid huge cryptocurrency disappointment on: May 16, 2022, 02:28:32 PM
I think I saw a meme a while ago (it might have been a comment on a video) but it was something like "don't expect to become instantly rich if you're investing like a young person".

Putting your whole net worth into crypto at 18 is much different than putting it in at 40-60 - where you should already have value - and expecting to make high returns (not that I'd suggest putting that much in anyway at any age).

  • Never spend more money than what you can't afford to lose.

Additionally, don't feel like you have to keep holding your investment once its in profit. Taking the same stance and not keeping too much in crypto is also a safer option (moving a certain amount of funds to things like stocks or even commodities might make you less nervous about your crypto investments).
1364  Economy / Economics / Re: Well now i know why Bill Gates bought farmland back in 2021, how did he knew ? on: May 16, 2022, 04:27:02 AM
Perhaps he also bought farmland at the worst time to buy it. If yields are going down due to fertiliser shortages and other things then it might not be as good an investment as he'd hoped it would be when it was acquired.

Re predicting the pandemic, there's one every 10-20 years (since cheap air flights) and I think his "prediction" was based off the ebola pandemic.
1365  Bitcoin / Bitcoin Discussion / Re: Newbie Question: Fees for Long-Term BitCoin Investment on: May 15, 2022, 08:57:41 PM
Crypto based stocks are going to suffer when compared to the actual asset - coinbase is more likely to go bankrupt than bitcoin for example.

Coinbase.com is the slick exchange to buy crypto instantly - you're paying the high fee for the "ease of use".

https://pro.coinbase.com/fees - coinbase pro is a lot cheaper and can normally be accessed once you're verified on a normal coinbase account ( fees should be around 0.4-0.6% for a fiat deposit).

As an additional note, crypto.com seem to charge 0.4% fees and sometimes offer fee free experiences for new sign ups (I think it depends on your jurisdiction but it might be worth looking at).
1366  Bitcoin / Bitcoin Discussion / Re: If you knew the founder of Bitcoin, would you still use it? on: May 15, 2022, 08:49:06 PM
If bitcoin's founder comes forward, they'd probably have to have sold their crypto or have found a way to actually hide it well. If satoshi came forward and still had all their keys - they'll probably not be able to keep them that safe for long.

5% of bitcoin ownership probably isn't enough to do too much damage over a lint term imo but it might make people too worried and would encourage them to sell their funds anyway.

If they did try to dump their whole funds, 5% might be enough to either get a greedy country that wants the funds arrest them or get a country that wants them for market manipulation to arrest them (there'd also be no reason not to dca out of their position if they wanted to sell as they'll get more for it and actually keep bitcoin alive and stable).
1367  Economy / Micro Earnings / Re: Freebitco.in withdrawal page not found on: May 13, 2022, 07:39:21 PM
You might want to leave a post on their thread instead of here as they'll be more likely to see it: https://bitcointalk.org/index.php?topic=320959.0

You could also send a message to TheQuin who used to work with them and probably still does: https://bitcointalk.org/index.php?action=profile;u=143168 (if you send them something identifiable like you're uid then they can probably see and resolve the issue faster).
1368  Bitcoin / Bitcoin Discussion / Re: How would bitcoin difficulty adjustment work in reduced energy environment? on: May 13, 2022, 07:28:36 PM
If you mean by cutting off miners, if the energy was reduced by half for example it'll take 16-20 minutes for each block to be mined on average (double).

As said above, difficulty and the network adjusts based on how much hash power is set to mine over a 2016 block period (approximately 14 days).
1369  Alternate cryptocurrencies / Altcoin Discussion / Re: Luna holders will get new token. on: May 13, 2022, 04:38:47 PM
All of their incompetence has done well to get coins delisted from exchanges so far...

If they are really doing this that means luna holders from pre-attack will get new tokens but what about those who buy later on exchange. People lost money when prices were continuously declining too.
I'm pretty sure the people who bought on exchanges would be fine with a rollback, as the coins they bought are pretty much zero already anyway lmao.

It does kinda seem like they'd be voting on theft though. UST was down less than 75% because of the attack, it dropped a further 50%+ because no recovery plan was actually created from what I can tell (we could arge the whole 86% was due to a bad recover plan and a very overconfident ceo).

I'm not too sure on how they operate but could this not make bridges and liquidity pools incur losses?

I'm not sure how much was on other chains but I saw wrapped ust tradable on uniswap?

Regardless of the rollback, I'm not sure luna can really recover from this point. If they took the current chain, found the $12bn+ to back up at least the ust that was owned then it'd be more possible for it to "feel" like a blip.
1370  Economy / Speculation / Re: $28000 Bitcoin price dangerously out of control on: May 12, 2022, 03:56:57 PM

How will you tell newbies cryptocurrencies are safe investments

They're not "safe"? They're not as risky as they have been and people market them as protections against inflation which fiat currencies don't but I think it's a bad idea to call them safe.

Most safe investments have fallen recently, even some government bonds are trading at -% with only commodities out performing everything else.

If you invested $5k into most stock markets you'd have $4k now.

Forex investments are more stable because they're investments in diversified economies (essentially). Crypto has more growth potential then forex though as they also don't grow and have inflation.
1371  Economy / Speculation / Re: Don’t rush to buy Bitcoin on: May 12, 2022, 03:46:01 PM
However if you look at past bear cycles you are going to have a lot of time to make your purchase. Better buying 10% higher from the low than guessing and getting a massive 50% loss.

You haven't really made a loss unless you sell at one.

I was selling $6k last time though and I'm still undecided as to what to do here - $29-30k may be similar to the old $6k now (which imo was still a good time to buy back then).

Whether you think its a bull or bear market now, you'll probably have to give up on the idea we're anything similar to the last time (for a bear market, there was no descending triangle this time and for a bull we don't normally stoop this low on the second trough).

Pro tip: DCA

I've seen a lot of pension advisers say the same recently about the stock market (even with lump sums).

Buying dips also might be more helpful psychologically to some.
1372  Bitcoin / Electrum / Re: Problem with wallet on startup on: May 12, 2022, 03:37:09 PM
Have/had you received multiple transactions that are unconfirmed? I'm guessing your wallet file might be considered "corrupted" by electrum if it's expecting transactions to appear in order of height (height looks like it means blockheight here since mempool transactions are set to inf).

The only way I can think of to fix this would be to make a new wallet or to wait for the transactions to confirm and see if it fixes itself (but the second option might not work).
1373  Alternate cryptocurrencies / Speculation (Altcoins) / Re: Bitcoin was outperformed by Alternative coins on Tuesday! on: May 11, 2022, 01:44:34 AM
And this is definitely not the first time that it happened.

It used to be XRP. Back then it was all to do with how isolated their traders/community was from btc. You're taking probably a similar amount of risk investing in those coins though and likely a deminished reward (and then there's the point where they start correlating to bitcoin again which you'll have to guess in advance so you don't lose funds before moving to your next community - otherwise you'll just be potentially losing small amounts of funds each time).
1374  Bitcoin / Bitcoin Discussion / Re: Is it Really Trustworthy? on: May 10, 2022, 04:04:19 PM
What ways could you see any of this happening?

If bitcoin went to $0, I'd probably be buying more. If it were hacked, there are enough copies of the chain it might just be rolled back to a point where it worked (there are sometimes warnings to not send transactions around hard forks for example just in case rollbacks are necessary).

I think it's wise to come up with plans for what you're going to do if you're all in on bitcoin though and I think most people should have diversified portfolios and only invest their risk tolerance in crypto.
1375  Alternate cryptocurrencies / Altcoin Discussion / Re: Sending Fee Question on: May 10, 2022, 01:04:19 AM
Btc is more widely accepted than a lot of altcoins and is also more stable than most.

When you mention cryptocurrency, many people have heard of btc and eth already - there's probably not many that hear about stablecoins (for better volatility resistance) or ltc (for low fees and faster speeds). Btc is also probably the most secure chain in the cryptocurrency space (it's subjective afaik but it's the oldest and has one of the largest number of witnesses).
1376  Bitcoin / Bitcoin Discussion / Re: Trading Bitcoin and crypto "could destroy your life", go to rehab hehehe on: May 10, 2022, 01:00:27 AM
There seems to have been a lot of reports fairly recently of gambling addiction support lines receiving calls from day traders, this is probably something similar to that.

If you bought and held, you'd have half of your investment if you bought at the peak - which isn't too bad compared with a lot of stocks and other assets.

1377  Economy / Trading Discussion / Re: Interest percentage on borrowing through Binance Margin on: May 09, 2022, 09:19:55 PM

The amount of interest in BTC shown in my wallet has now gone up from 0.00007057 to 0.00009097...

See here... https://postimg.cc/v1DdCgsj

0.00009097 BTC is roughly $3 (just under)... is this the total interest I owe or do I have to multiply this by the number of hours I've been in the trade? I've been in the trade for around 5 days now so if it's an hourly rate it's gonna cost me a bloody fortune!

No it's the total interest you owe up until now. So it'll have cost $3 for the last 5 days.
1378  Economy / Trading Discussion / Re: Interest percentage on borrowing through Binance Margin on: May 09, 2022, 03:41:23 AM
The 0.00007057 is the bitcoin in interest that's due - there's no % - (ie it's been added to the amount you've borrowed)

Interest is calculated every hour based on that (I think you get an email summary at some point too that might provide more useful information than the live info).
1379  Economy / Speculation / Re: BTC Sentiment Poll for May on: May 09, 2022, 02:56:43 AM
The price still seems kinda high to me (like we should still be considering ourselves to be in a bull market). We've been around this area for quite a while and I don't think much has changed. I didn't expect up to reach 40k the last time we did and if we keep ranging between about 30k-40k (+/- a few k) then I think the price is pretty stable and strong.

We didn't have a blow off top this time either, we had a top that was reached twice and exceeded the second time. We have economic uncertainty to compete with this time too (2 years ago at the start of the pandemic, we crashed down to $3k)...

I think this is more a case of waiting for a strong break in either direction and either waiting for that to enter or just holding tight with what you have.
1380  Economy / Exchanges / Re: Coinbase is likely to restrict rich Russian accounts on: May 07, 2022, 04:38:16 PM
What do you think of such actions? Is it the problem of centralization or the strength of consolidated institutional response to you?

Maybe the weakness of people who hold funds on exchanges for too long and have too much trust in the custodians - coinbase would be the last exchange I'd store funds on if I were affiliated with Russia - binance's blocking was a bit unexpected to me but coinbase is quite well affiliated with Europe and North America and was set up in the US.

I heard news recently that investors in coinbase stock were speculating large amounts of crypto left the exchange a few weeks ago - I don't know whether this was related or not but maybe warnings were given to users in advance?
