401  Other / Beginners & Help / Re: I'm finally saying goodbye to CEX and Centralised projects on: November 30, 2022, 04:19:58 PM
You like order book features? Yes few Dex have this already, e.g dYdX, Raydium, serum and Posi exchange.

Using limits orders on these exchanges might lead you to be putting lots of your assets in centralised cryptos though which could be problematic and is worth remembering (usdc and usdt are both centralised).
402  Bitcoin / Project Development / Can you encrypt vps data so a provider could never access it? on: November 30, 2022, 04:15:19 PM
This came to my mind recently because of how a lot of more centralised projects (like mixers and exchanges) can be attacked by law enforcement and taken down. I'm wondering if there's a way projects can be fully encrypted within a vps instance so the vps provider wouldn't be able to access the actual services running (but they'd still be easy to patch for the owner).

I was doing some related reading about a prototype for blockchain level cloud services and stumbled upon Intel SGX and AMD SEV which seem to offer hardware level encryption but I'm not sure of their scope and if keys could be snapshot.
403  Other / Beginners & Help / Re: Most suitable way to confirm transaction using cryptography? on: November 30, 2022, 02:03:34 PM
You're reinventing vouchers from scratch?

This has likely already been done, I don't know if it's been done with cryptography but it could be. You'd just get someone to scan their vouchers with an app that can sign them when they want to spend them.

In your database you just have to store whatever is on the voucher and its identifier. If you want these vouchers to be non transferable, you could get the customer to scan their public key on the PoS system too and store that with the database information.

This can probably be done with PoS systems capable of scanning barcodes anyway - you might run low on people wanting to use the system for a while though.
404  Bitcoin / Electrum / Re: Electrum asking for permission on "Screen Recording" !! (mac settings) on: November 30, 2022, 12:40:44 AM
It's likely for handling and sporting bugs. I'd disable it though if you can (or leave it turned off) I doubt it's necessary, there's also the chance it's accidental or it's come from something else as the android one doesn't ask for that and the Windows version I have also didn't ask for microphone access.
405  Other / Beginners & Help / Re: Missing Board (s) on: November 29, 2022, 04:06:04 PM
Have you refreshed the page and still got the same thing?

You could go here to see if this is causing the problem - boards you want to see should be unchecked? https://bitcointalk.org/index.php?action=profile;sa=ignoreBoards
406  Bitcoin / Development & Technical Discussion / Re: Question about Privacy. on: November 29, 2022, 03:52:43 PM
If you're connecting bitcoin core via tor and shuffling your onion addresses, that might be about the same privacy as electrum doing the same thing (I'm assuming it's possible to change your onion address on both - I haven't tried it).

You'd have to remain vigilant about coin control on core though to not merge any change with funds you want to not be traced as coming from the same source (you could mitigate this by having multiple wallets, but you'd have to do a rescan for each iirc).
407  Economy / Service Discussion / Re: Old website to buy shares on: November 29, 2022, 01:28:44 AM
Looks like there's a company trading under that name or a similar name have you tried contacting them? They mention being into crypto so it might be a good place to start. Their fund doesn't preform as well as the market so far though (crypto or S&P).
408  Economy / Service Discussion / Re: Should I be comfortable using Purse.io? on: November 28, 2022, 03:55:15 PM
@jackg I've seen serious discussions members discuss and talk about the Purse.io exchange.

Thanks for the links. I'll have a look through these soon and I'm not sure if I've seen them before but they look to be from users who were fairly newbie/ones I hadn't come across around the time those threads were created. They also seem quite old compared to the more recent users that have used it for years.

It'll be an interesting read though to see what actually happened in each of their cases. The one about them closing down I'm aware of but they didn't actually change owners and the reopening looked more like a publicity stunt at the time (like a "use it or lose it" style stunt).

Edit: one of those looks like it's from part of the service (or another service entirely) that was defunct. The two others seem to be from earners facing problems which could be legitimate, and they might not be too there's such little information given (such as how they got the vouchers) from what I can tell anyway.
409  Bitcoin / Bitcoin Discussion / Re: Bitcoin and security on: November 28, 2022, 03:40:05 PM
This is clearer I think so. A more safer investment like what stocks, bond and commodities do and are under regulated umbrella, shares of companies included as it has government eyes and involvement, guiding by agencies through government.

Commodities are more like wheat and grain that could be replaced (such as artificial rubies replacing naturally occurring ones).

Is that saying also that agencies cover by government can not go bankrupt and investors lose money?

It depends but it's likely holding a firm a government considers essential (such as a utility firm - electricity, water, Internet) you're probably unlikely to lose money if you buy it while it's financially stable and producing profit (the government will likely buy it off you for more than it's worth if you're in a country that isn't corrupt and sell it for less than it's worth - to help institutions as governments can generally loan money for "free" -from themselves - provided it's well spent).
410  Bitcoin / Bitcoin Discussion / Re: Bitcoin and security on: November 28, 2022, 02:05:19 PM
The likely reason for this is a security is something that provides a stable return (such as a dividend) while a commodity provides a purchase of a unit which could provide a return but it also might not.

The difference is that securities are generally safer investments as you can take money out while your initial investment stays but you generally have less risk and they might devalue or remain stable compared to commodities which can grow.
411  Bitcoin / Development & Technical Discussion / Re: Secp256k1 Hacks? on: November 28, 2022, 11:16:00 AM
Isn't there a remainder function used somewhere to make the whole thing less linear and guessable.

I think if your theory was true there'd be a much easier way to break ANY key knowing the public key merely by doing something similar to a merge sort (binary search) where you determine if your private key is higher or lower than the one you've forced based on half the range and half it again in the direction of finding a key.

The two countries can increase their trade friendship if this happen and the success will encourage more countries to try such mode of trading.

I think there are a lot of countries already doing this sort of thing but many of those relationships were established before the Internet and weren't as quick as they are now (especially between European countries). There's also a chance this sort of thing dates back to the 1700s at least too (among private individuals).
413  Other / Beginners & Help / Re: about cryptocurrency on: November 28, 2022, 10:55:15 AM
If you've got a decent amount to invest, you could start by looking at buying bitcoin. If you don't have much to invest but have some spare time you could try growing a brand or a company that can then convert its profits into crypto (or find companies that need things doing).

Don't invest too much at first and expect the market to go down as well as up. Market price is based on demand, if it drops your bitcoin are still worth the same number of bitcoin.
414  Other / Politics & Society / Re: Violent protests break out at Foxconn’s ‘iPhone city’ on: November 28, 2022, 10:51:43 AM
People are always capable of rebellion. I'd hope the International markets are able to provide better conditions for Chinese citizens though or they'll probably see a lot of migration to other areas.

I'm surprised these repeated reports haven't been bad enough for Apple's image and made them buy the facility instead of having it owned by another company. I wouldn't be surprised if in a few years we start to see phones that can be assembled by the buyer (same goes for most other items too that are currently made in sweatshops). At the same time, these people might need these jobs, due to the huge population many facilities closing down might do worse for food shortages and living conditions than is already being done by a huge company.
415  Bitcoin / Bitcoin Discussion / Re: Poll: Is Bitcoin a weapon or speech? on: November 28, 2022, 12:22:01 AM
Its decentralised nature likely means we don't have to pick which of the two it is (if it falls into the category of either).

It might be legal for the same reasons tor is legal or it could be legal because it's not been made illegal and there's little reason to make it illegal (eg the EU saying only 2% of crypto transactions are related to illegal activity iirc).

If bitcoin were illegal, it'd probably appreciate in value.

The right to freedom of speech is protected in a lot more places than the freedom to carry deadly weapons with a hope your can discharge it on someone before they discharge it on you.
416  Economy / Speculation / Re: Bitcoin cycles, this is the cyclical minimum on: November 28, 2022, 12:02:34 AM
Any thoughts given to how long the low (or close to it) has been held in the past? I think if the low is in, we'll be around it for a while before people gain confidence again - confidence in exchanges is likely depleting too (one of the biggest on ramps for crypto).

Also, based on previous times, it looks like we might be due one more drop before we start to recover well again.
417  Bitcoin / Wallet software / Re: How safe are offline wallets? on: November 27, 2022, 07:44:00 PM
An offline and airgapped.machine is one of the safest options, followed by a hardware wallet, then a 2 of 2 multisig with two online machines running different operating systems (such as a computer and a phone) and then a single wallet on an online machine like electrum.

If you're prone to installing malicious software.a keylogger is all that's needed to find your password and those are hideable enough. If your wallet file is discovered and is encrypted with at least 4-8 randomly generated words or 13 randomly generated alphanumeric characters then you're safe having your wallet file intercepted.

If you're storing more than $700, I think a hardware wallet should be a no brainer and a go to for storing funds. If you've got less then you will have to weigh up the consequences of storing your funds in hot wallets than using hardware and see what you're best doing.
418  Other / Politics & Society / Re: Russia relaunches Soviet-era Moskvich car brand using a former Renault plant on: November 27, 2022, 01:21:26 AM
It sounds like despirstion but it also sounds unnecessary.

After hearing in the news that Germany attempted to resolve the oil cost issues by selling national day train tickets for about €3, I'm wondering why Russia hasn't tried to use the things it's good at and not the things people make jokes about.

They can't even roll enough tanks across the production line to facilitate holding their positions and advancing - anything about car manufacturing might be affront for something else.

I'm not sure where this lands Russia and Europe either selling company production plants for €1. Lukoil was confiscated from a European company because they couldn't get a sale within 6 months and their chairman very soon after "fell out of a window to his death".

International markets brought a lot of things when it comes to adoption, Russia will likely learn the hard way whether its version of isolationism will actually make them efficient and emergent as a global competitor, or whether they've shut themselves out of international markets and realised they can't do better at some things when other countries have deals for cooperatively trading talent.
419  Other / Politics & Society / Re: Ghana plans to buy oil with gold instead of U.S. dollars on: November 27, 2022, 01:08:26 AM
The dollar looks like it's only doing well against the euro (unless I've missed something).

The dollar against the pound and the yuan are either at the same levels they've been over the past 5 years (the pound) or much stronger (the yuan).

The Petro dollar might not be holding to its title quite like it'd have expected (I'm not sure why the pound shot back up or why the yuan is bullish but they're probably both linked to China, Japan and countries following them trying to decouple themselves from the US economy by selling bonds).

I'd expect Danish Krona and Norwegian Krona to have been particularly bullish now since they've both got reliable and strong energy supplies.
420  Other / Beginners & Help / Re: Are Blockchain and crypto currency the same? on: November 26, 2022, 11:21:13 PM
You can get crypto without blockchains but they're much less secure. There are solutions that don't need blockchains and update a chainstate instead based on "masternodes" or similarly centralised spaces. There might be something that comes out that can beat blockchains though (either in security or storage efficiency) although I don't think it's appeared yet so blockchains are the best we have.
