781  Bitcoin / Development & Technical Discussion / Re: Minimum treshhold of full nodes required for good network health on: September 20, 2022, 11:03:48 PM
If all the seed nodes went offline then the new nodes wouldn't be able to connect to the network as easily (they'd have to manually key in nodes to listen to from sites like bitnodes).

If a lot of nodes went offline all at once, a lot more would probably come on to replace them. There's likely more copies of the blockchain than there are accessible nodes too.

For the network to stop, miners would have to stop too and I think that's something that's not going to happen.

Someone on here said it cost $200 a month to run a full node that was cloud hosted, if a mining firm or a dev could sense extra throughput was needed for a short time, that's probably a smaller investment than $8/day which I don't think they'd mind spending.

Also there are jittery nodes that aren't quoted in the numbers on websites too. Ones that come and go from the network and ones that change their ip often enough to go a bit under the radar. These would probably be able to stay online at a fraction of the cost of a cloud instance (probably around 70 cents at most for the day).
782  Economy / Gambling discussion / Re: Casino and prisons on: September 20, 2022, 10:51:21 PM
Was it being run by the same people? Did that incentivise the same gangs to get arrested/rearrested or commit crimes? I imagine it would do.

If you knew someone inside the prison leading a better life than you from the money they have that they could take out of the prison with them, maybe that's reason to commit a crime for when you get released with more money, having not paid for much while inside.

Aside from that if it was more informal and pooled (like poker is) then I don't think there's much wrong with it - but then it probably couldn't be made illegal either without a very specific bill.
783  Other / Meta / Re: Forum Improvement - My Wild Idea/Suggestion. on: September 20, 2022, 10:46:34 PM
5 and 8 are the only benefits I actually see from this and the forum administration already doesn't care about those/have a policy to enforce anything against either.

Some of your benefits aren't benefits at all. If you're legendary and become hero again, is there an incentive to become legendary, would it matter to anyone?

Equally if you were legendary and cared about the rank you earnt, when you went away for a year and become a full member again would you bother posting at all and not just leave for somewhere like stackoverflow?
784  Economy / Gambling / Re: Will duelbits pay 20k bet? on: September 20, 2022, 12:59:35 AM
Most sites have a max wager or max win on them so this sort of thing is managed. If it's below the max wager/win they'd likely pay out - if someone bet $20k and won 3x, they're probably going to come back with that $60k at some point anyway (if it's a lot to them).

There have been sites ousted here for doing similar things in the past and duel bits hasn't been one afaik (I'm not around the reputation section enough to know for sure).
785  Economy / Economics / Re: Are Spare Change Investment Apps A Good Option on: September 20, 2022, 12:55:34 AM
I got offered this by my bank in the UK for "free" - they didn't charge a commission on investments but probabky made some from the funds they suggested (even those had - at most - 0.7% fees per year).

I've seen acorn advertised a lot (and moneybox too for a similar thing) and I think they're both a lot of hype without much behind them.

That being said, I'd find it'd only take a few minutes to download my monthly bank statement as a csv and crunch the numbers myself so maybe I'm not the person it's aimed at. I also think these types of schemes encourage spending more money too (especially on small, cheap items).
786  Economy / Trading Discussion / Re: What is happening with Crypto market on: September 19, 2022, 10:18:43 PM
I think I'm in agreement with what's been said here before about inflation being disproportional to bitcoin's price. I think we'll see bitcoin doing a lot better when that starts to fall again (thought we might have to wait until inflation stabilises again first).

I know you posted this from an article but I think it could've done with at least one graph showing how all these rates have affected bitcoin in a way more simple than reading the data.
787  Economy / Trading Discussion / Re: How exchange determine flat fee on: September 19, 2022, 09:54:55 PM
Most exchanges that use flat fees like that review it periodically and adjust things. There's a lot of exchanges that use fees that vary depending on what the best fee is at the time (they might also go slightly higher to ensure things get confirmed - I've not had a problem with coinbase for example when they set their fees based off the market).

I think people will complain about both because on one you can expect to pay the same fee for a while and on the other you can spontaneously pay more or less but you're paying what the network demands and not the exchange.
788  Economy / Service Discussion / Re: Urgent!!! Lost 2FA Code on: September 19, 2022, 09:47:43 PM
Their thread here might be the best way to contact them: https://bitcointalk.org/index.php?topic=320959.22820

If you've deposited from a wallet you can control the private keys of/sign messages on then you might want to offer one when asking them to unlock your account if possible - but this might not be necessary.

You might be able to search for emails from them also before you get in touch in case they ask for your user ID and then you'll have it to hand but that might not be as necessary (especially if you've still got access to the email). Don't post personal information publicly (or anything that could be used to identify your account) if you can help it too. Sending it to them via email if they offer you one would be fine.
789  Alternate cryptocurrencies / Altcoin Discussion / Re: Don't keep connected your wallet to a Dapps for a long time. on: September 19, 2022, 02:31:45 AM
I thought the same as you. Also, victims thought the same things. But connect a long time is harmful. According to metamask seed would be compromised this way where you don't need to approve from your wallet. The victim is pretty sure the device hasn't been hacked. If a transaction happens from the device then there should be a history on the wallet. But nothing, only history funds on the chain.

If this was the case there'd be more scams of this nature. I now think the person has put their seed in on a different website or installed a fake version of metamask - this shouldn't happen without them signing a transaction. It's possible malicious code was put in by the website and signed by the user without them knowing too but I doubt metamask gives away the seed as that'd have been discovered a long time ago.

Also a transaction history not being available on metamask but on the blockchain is more evidence that the wallet is malware because what reason would metamask have to not show you that transaction?
790  Alternate cryptocurrencies / Altcoin Discussion / Re: Don't keep connected your wallet to a Dapps for a long time. on: September 18, 2022, 07:44:27 PM
Just keeping your wallet connected to a dapp/website won't do this, you'd also have to click to sign or authorise a transaction too.

I think this is the bit that could become the more problematic part as it's possible to sign transactions that look weird when doing things like buying an nft (a lot of gaming marketplaces ask you to sign a transaction that confirms spending up to a certain amount rather than an exact amount and I think this is the bit that might be able to catch people out if they're using a scammy platform - especially if it's not broadcast straight away or the smart contract can come with a delay for funds being taken).
791  Bitcoin / Bitcoin Discussion / Re: Is it possible to create a fake wallet.dat file? on: September 18, 2022, 05:45:57 PM
Is it possible to create an encrypted wallet.dat file, that shows a balance and the corresponding address after a rescan with Bitcoin Core, but that is fake?

Yes. It's been discussed quite a lot here before that it's possible to do due to how encryption is done with core.
792  Bitcoin / Bitcoin Discussion / Re: BTC mining cannot be affected by an ARTIFICIAL ENERGY CRISIS on: September 18, 2022, 03:14:12 PM
It does sound like it could be an attack, but it could also just be an extra tax. It's done well to weaken the euro and EU stocks haven't seemed attractive investments for investors recently, however, I don't know how well it'll do at actually strengthening the US Dollar and oil companies.

The oil companies in the UK are in the poorest parts of the country, I don't know why this is but it seems to be the same with the US and texas? Is this offshore companies benefitting while offering little to the local economies but currency demand?

It'd be nice if it's seen as an opportunity for the EU to strengthen relations with Canada but that probably won't happen and renewables and other resources will probably be relied upon instead.
793  Economy / Exchanges / Re: Is ftx really good or just overrated? on: September 18, 2022, 02:19:44 PM
Why do you need so many exhcnage accounts or are you just testing what different sites have to offer?

I think most of the main ones (especially for leverage trading) are very similar and it'll be hard to tell the difference between them (especially if you're using something like tradingview or mt4 for analysis/charts).

I just looked overall what different sites had to offer (and how hard they made getting it - like with kyc) to decide which one(s) to use, I'd recommend it rather than registering and kycing with everywhere if you can (there might be good information on search engines too, Youtube was OK for that in the past but then there was a lot of sponsorships).
794  Alternate cryptocurrencies / Service Discussion (Altcoins) / Re: How to attract users to the blockchain game ? on: September 18, 2022, 02:23:54 AM
What sort of game is it?

The best way to do this is decide if you want to handle everything yourselves or go through other areas to market what you have.

Don't market the game until it's been fully developed though as I think fewer people will care about speculating on your tokens and it won't be the midt optimal time to sell them.

It might be a good idea to experiment with advertising too once you have artwork sorted to try to see which websites are best.

Signatures might work well here too, I see a lot of altcoin projects running campaigns for a few weeks up to about 8 to get an audience for their token.

You could advertise before a full launch but you'd need something to keep people playing on the site and returning before the full game is completed like arcade style/mini games.
795  Other / Off-topic / Re: IT boosts up the economy on: September 17, 2022, 05:58:58 PM
Do you have something more specific or is the question more general?

It'll provide liquidity and buying pressure on the currency of the country the freelancers are in because they'll have profits and maybe even their full wage being converted into a currency they're going to want to spend at some point.

They might also provide import and export taxes (ecommerce) and VAT on products sold. Larger ecommerce companies could also benefit from getting local contracts/makers and then might have less administration on things like returns (like many large companies do with distribution centres that can hold stock and quality test them).
796  Bitcoin / Bitcoin Discussion / Re: Bitcoin is Not Just a Database in the Rasberry Pi or in the Apple Pie but ... on: September 17, 2022, 05:24:55 PM
Are you trying to convince yourself of these things?

Bitcoin is Not Just a Database in the Rasberry Pi or in the Apple Pie - Bitcoin is systemised Computational Datastructure in the Blockchain which has PoW and timestamp.
OK. More bitcoin uses the blockchain as storage which is a distributed ledger that uses PoW for its security and timestamps for very little.

You just cannot change anything as you like to add or change aas you wish. It is cryptographically secured because it is the blockchained Database. If you alter one single indexed number, then it will alter the rest of the merkele tree and makes it unsecured.
If any information in a merkle tree is changed then the root node is changed and bitcoin survives off the root node of old blocks being unchangeable as a hash of them with other data is referenced by the next block.

Therefore, think not that Bitcoin Blockchain is can be altered by any one who likes to do it. It is impossible because it is the bullet proof Blockchain technology with the permanent clock base structure behind it for absolute security.

The distributed proof of work algorithm and the decentralised network is what keeps everything secure. It's not exactly that there's one clock that decides everything, there's many! This is what keeps things more secure. The Internet would have to reduced to barely anything to ensure all of these clocks/nodes are disconnected from the network.
797  Other / Politics & Society / Re: The economic danger of China and Taiwan war on: September 17, 2022, 05:09:57 PM
Does binance even stil.have financial relations with China? I thought that's why they moved to Singapore?

A lot of the island nations around that area (Singapore, Taiwan, Bangladesh and Thailand) seem to have better relations with the EU than they do China - diplomatically at least?

Most Chinese laws throttle companies too much in many sectors and a lot leave to either be in Hong Kong or Singapore (I imagine there'll start to be companies moving from Hong Kong too soon to avoid Chinese regulations and protect their business/assets).
798  Bitcoin / Electrum / Re: Electrum shows less balance than blockchain on: September 17, 2022, 04:59:55 PM
I think it's likely both wallets use different derivation paths for change addresses and this could be the problem.

An easy way to work this out would be to click on your last outgoing (send) transaction on your blockchain funds and find the address the change was paid to (the additional amount from the spend inputs that wasn't sent to the receiving address) then go to electrum's console and type ismine("address") and see if that returns true or false.
799  Economy / Scam Accusations / Re: Problem with btc365 bet on: September 17, 2022, 04:52:49 PM
just got another response from btc365 i also asked them to join this conversation

Pm their account here or ask them to transfer you to someone else on the email. If you're just talking to the same person then you're definitely not getting anywhere. Have you sent their account here a pm yet?

If you ask for help, people give you suggestions and you just ignore them and spout about the same thing again, you'll stop getting help quite quickly.

800  Bitcoin / Bitcoin Discussion / Re: GREENPEACE INTENSIFIES CAMPAIGN AGAINST BITCOIN FOLLOWING ETHEREUM'S MERGE on: September 17, 2022, 04:42:55 PM
I wish they spent money on something more meaningful, not on ads against PoW. Some are fast to attack Bitcoin because they don't like it much, don't understand it, and think they can succeed if they go against it.

If they had a project of buying up bogland so it couldn't be vandalised/burnt or actually invested in renewables or lobbying for them they'd be much more productive - especially now when oil has doubled in price at least in a lot of places.

If you complain about bitcoin being PoW on an ad, is there not.apotential you're advertising bitcoin to those who are against you too - which might be a lot of people?

I repeat. There is no such an invention in PoS. This is the way fiat currencies and even the gold standard worked since the origins of monetary history. All modern nationalized fiat currencies (the USD, the EUR, the GBP, etc.) are already digital and working under the PoS model.  Where is the innovation? Nowhere.
Based on the fact 2 companies hold 40% of the eth staking capital, it might be worse than banking as PoS and is definitely worse than customer/investor owned banks too (that used to exist and have been reinvented).
