1381  Economy / Service Discussion / MtGox private key sweep function on: December 05, 2012, 09:21:44 PM
I notice that MtGox have a private key import function on their website.

My question is, if I import a private key and a few weeks later I receive a payment to the key's address, will MtGox deposit that transaction into my account as well?

Is there any limit on private keys I can import into my MtGox account?

First of all, the need to create Bitcoins.

Do you mean creating the concept of Bitcoins, or actually generating the Bitcoins themselves?

If you mean generating Bitcoins, How else do you think we fairly distribute them? You think Satoshi should have just started off with 21 million BTC in his wallet?

But even more than that-bitcoins are tied to the USD.

Where did you hear this nonsense? This is completely untrue.

You forgot one:

Whoever made that image also misspelled the word "were". Nefario had managed spelled it correctly.
1385  Bitcoin / Development & Technical Discussion / Re: Blockchain Data Suspends Now? on: December 05, 2012, 05:51:51 AM
Miner's can include whatever transactions they like. They can choose to included no transactions in a block if they like, and there are plenty of 0 1 transaction blocks in the blockchain.

FYPFY.  How/when does a miner decide what to include in their block? Feel free to link me to another source that explains this clearly.

Good point, it needs to have the generation transaction included.

How do miners choose their own transactions? Well, they can modify their mining software's source code & make it use whatever rules they like themselves (only include my transactions, only include transactions that paid a 1BTC fee etc etc).

A while ago there was a Botnet mining Bitcoins, and in order to reduce the amount of network resources it was using to make the mining software less noticeable, it didn't include any transactions in its block except for the block reward.
1386  Bitcoin / Development & Technical Discussion / Re: Blockchain Data Suspends Now? on: December 05, 2012, 04:34:33 AM
My question: Why does block 210935 which was found like 1.5 hours after the previous block only containing 13 transactions? That seems odd to me.

Miner's can include whatever transactions they like. They can choose to included no transactions in a block if they like, and there are plenty of 0 transaction blocks in the blockchain.
1387  Economy / Service Discussion / Re: Coinapult funds missing [RESOLVED] on: December 05, 2012, 03:54:02 AM
This thread is concerning. Although Yankee has been nice and helped out, still no official resolution on this issue weeks later? Crazy...

This is one service I'll be staying away from anyways, from now on I'll just email them the private key to a wallet with the BTC, no need for coinapult.
1388  Economy / Service Discussion / Re: How can My Wallet be made more auditable? on: December 05, 2012, 03:49:40 AM
Obviously none of those apply to MPEx

What are you talking about? Most of these do apply to MPEx or any online wallet in fact.

FROM NOW ON ANY DIVERTIONAL CURRENCY CONTRARY TO THE STATE WILL BE MADE ILLEGAL AND BE PUNISHABLE BY DEATH OR LIFE IMPRISONMENT FOR THE GOOD OF THE SURVIVAL OF THE NATION AND SURVIVAL OF ITS CITIZENS . EASY  .

Cool. First off, you've just spent a few million getting lawyers to write that & to make sure that it will hold up in court, and second, what about in the UK? That law won't apply there, so now you gotta go work with the UK government as well, and repeat for 208 countries. Would take years.

And then what happens when it goes to court and somebody makes a case that Bitcoins aren't currency, because Bitcoin doesn't fit the current legal definition of a currency (which is true). That will have to be changed to.

Its not just as easy as that.

Also, where will they get all the money to keep all those people in prison? It costs $10,000 a year to keep someone in jail. New budget has to be introduced as well.

It's got Nothing to do with countries " hating " each other what a bogus line  a Deluded line. .You are beyond delusional  . .

I'm the delusional one? Cheesy

Its called international relations. Can you imagine the US trying to convince Iraq to make Bitcoin mining illegal?

Now, compare this whole scenario to the fact that anyone with $50 million can 51% attack Bitcoin and destroy it that way. Which scenario do we worry about?

I personally think I'm much more likely to get struck by lightening than Bitcoin mining being made illegal.

BFL has been around, and sold a lot of other hardware.

They've sold a whole bunch of FPGA's, but they too their sweet time doing it. They company is only 3 years old as well, and only started shipping products this year.
The main worry with BFL is that the CEO is currently on probation for $25 million of mail fraud.

Even with the increased difficulty at 250 TH, two singles will still make 2 BTC /day.

Thats optimistic, look at how many pre-orders BFL has had, IIRC they went 6 figures in the first 2 days they announced the pre-orders, thats not including other ASIC manufacturers as well. Its going to be at least a 20x difficulty increase (400TH), probably closer to 40x. A 1 year ROI is more likely.
1392  Bitcoin / Mining / Re: Could Mining be shut down. on: December 05, 2012, 02:17:38 AM
Two are totally  distinguishable.

It still applies.

You think that if mining is made illegal, that everybody in the world is going to stop mining?
1393  Bitcoin / Mining / Re: Could Mining be shut down. on: December 05, 2012, 02:00:19 AM
Currency and weed have very little in common, but Yankee was trying to point out that even though weed is illegal, its everywhere. It being illegal doesn't stop people from using it, its more popular now than back when it was legal. The same applies if mining was made illegal, it wouldn't stop people from mining.

Even if I set the router to static?

Yup, your router doesn't get to choose the IP it gets.
1397  Other / Off-topic / Re: ISP ethics? on: December 04, 2012, 08:30:40 PM
They are still able to force a new IP onto your router.

Yes, thats what most people are using, you can run a couple of hundred ASIC's off one Raspberry Pi.
