The only real way to guard against this is to meet the person in person and exchange keys after checking photo ID, and otherwise confirming you can trust the person.
That only works if you actually know who you're talking with. I can already guarantee that anyone who shows an ID with the name "LoyceV" won't be me.
Here's a fake ID for the Dutch Prime Minister:

I'd say signing the PGP key from an old staked Bitcoin address means a lot more than a photo ID.

It's interesting you have cold feet about KYC, but are tracking all bitcoin wallets...
Bitcoin addresses are public. All my Bitcoin-related data projects could have been created by someone else, and I'm pretty sure others are collecting data too. I just publish everything so anyone can use it.

Why?
Bitcointalk history of hacks and vandalism.

Can anyone else fund my channel? For example, Bob and Alice have a channel that is 0.001BTC, can Jack transfer 0.0001 coins to Bob and Alice's channel outside the LN and thus increase the channel volume to 0.0011?
As far as I know, this isn't possible.
Quote
The idea is if someone has to send me BTC he can directly fund my channel.
A way around this is to use a custodial wallet. This this morning I asked someone to pay to a Bech32-address that goes straight into my BlueWallet LN balance, and by creating a new LN wallet each time, I can use different addresses for this.
Custodial isn't perfect, but for small amounts I don't mind.

I bought my first whole BitCoin which I divided into 20 bight sized paper wallets as gifts to the membership of LASFAPA - each receiving BTC 0.05000471 if you find wallet addresses starting 1Lasfapa... they were Vanity Generated by me.  The 0.05 was worth about $20 at the time I bought the coins, now they're worth about $ 585 at the time of writing this.

Actually, it was only 18, not 20:

If you're still in contact with them, they might need a reminder they own/hodl $500+ in Bitcoin.

The top 1,000 users on BPIP.org 's Most Recognised (myself included at rank 38) should be the first to be vetted by a third party KYC verifying company.
Why? I don't know any other internet forum that requires KYC. I would even argue I'm not even "YC", and there's no no way in hell I'll ever go through KYC on any forum. I'm pretty sure at least 90% of the users would disappear, and the remaining few might pay some poor guy to do it on their behalf.
13866  Economy / Service Announcements / Re: [ANN] CoinPlaza.it: non-custodial instant crypto exchange - Bitcoin ⚡ Enabled on: September 03, 2020, 08:10:20 AM
Is it mandatory to have KYC in order to swap between BTC and Tether?
No, it worked before.

You'll probably find they are out of stock so can't offer it for trade.
That would be my guess too.

Quote
To do a 0.001 trade they were wanting 0.00028xxxx as well as the fees etc.
Before this change, on-chain transaction fees paid be CoinPlaza were much higher than the fee they charged. I understand that can't be a sustainable business model.
Weirdly enough, the other way around still charges only 1% fee: 0.001 BTC on-chain gets you 99900 LN sat.
I'd be okay if CoinPlaza offers a low-fee on-chain transaction, and I don't mind waiting a long time for a confirmation, but that's probably going to be a problem if they use the change address to send to someone else again.

13869  Bitcoin / Development & Technical Discussion / Re: The Lightning Network FAQ on: September 02, 2020, 05:10:02 PM
I would not try to time fee rates when deciding the costs/benefits to opening a LN channel.
You don't even have to time it, you can just wait for fees to drop, and then make a transaction. I know this doesn't guarantee anything for the future, but my counter argument would be fees can rise right after broadcasting any Bitcoin transaction.
13870  Bitcoin / Development & Technical Discussion / Re: The Lightning Network FAQ on: September 02, 2020, 04:20:22 PM
In order to realize cost benefits of using LN, you must make at least three LN payments, assuming consistent fees, at least 66.67% cost savings per/tx and a non-zero cost of making a LN transaction. If you don't plan on making at least 3 txns, you are probably better off using on-chain txns.
I can think of a different scenario: you can open a LN-channel when fees are low, and make a low-fee transaction when you need it at a later moment. Especially when paying for a time-sensitive service this could save you money.
It can fail though: I've had a channel that didn't open because my low-fee transaction took to long to confirm, and when it was closed it did CPFP which lead to a much higher fee.
13871  Economy / Reputation / Re: What can I do to remove a neg tag? on: September 02, 2020, 04:17:07 PM
I would appreciate any reputed member like suchmoon, LoyceV to come forward and help me removing the tag.
You have 6 "untrusted" negative feedbacks, I have 9. Obviously, I don't have any power to convince people to remove tags.

I want anyone of them to PM ChiNgadOr
That's probably against the rules:
29. Sending unsolicited PMs, including but not limited to advertising and flood, is not allowed.
Especially since he knows already:
I have tried to reach him through bitcointalk pm and telegram but got no response at all.

Quote
What can I do to get out of this tag?
Nothing. So just stop worrying about it. People have much worse feedback than this.
13872  Other / Meta / Re: I know exactly when I will rank up! on: September 02, 2020, 11:05:31 AM
I am waiting for 1133 because the way I understood the activity system, it will reduce one activity from that deleted post of mine.
See:
You only need to make at least one post in each activity period to be able to collect the activity at a later date. For instance, you could make one post in three different periods and you would then have 3 posts and 3 activity, but a potential activity of 42. Once you made the 42 posts you would then have 42 activity but no more.
~
If your post count eclipses your activity by 14 or more then you will only need to make one post in the new period to get the full 14 activity. For instance, your post count is 200 but your activity is only 28. To get another 14 activity you will only need to make one post in the new period and you will then have a total of 42 activity.
13873  Other / Meta / Re: I know exactly when I will rank up! on: September 02, 2020, 10:09:04 AM
You have 1036 activity right now. Go back to your post history and delete one post from your 1st to 1035th post. Check back after few minutes (give it a half an hour the max), you will see you have 1035th activity.
As long as you have more Posts than Activity, your Activity can only be a multiple of 14.

Quote
You can make it 1120, but not 1133. Unless you delete 80% of your posts.
13874  Other / Meta / Re: [overview] LoyceV's useful data on Bitcointalk on: September 02, 2020, 10:00:32 AM
Do you have by any chance a .txt file of ALL (or those active in the last month) bitcointalk usernames?
No, but I can make one Smiley
Does it have to be an exact month? Or can it be from post 54900000 until post 55111681? The latter is what I used.
For your convenience, I've added links to the profiles instead of just usernames, see loyce.club/other/Aveatrex.html. It was a quick fix, so unfortunately sorting by userID failed.

Note: this only counts users who posted on public boards (so not in Investigations). It doesn't include users who have been active (for instance reading the forum or sending a PM) without posting.
It's probably interesting to check this list for Banned users.

For the past 7 days, I have Active users and top posters on Bitcointalk.org in the past 7 days.
13875  Other / Meta / Re: I know exactly when I will rank up! on: September 02, 2020, 09:27:37 AM
Assuming full 14 activity points every two weeks, there are only 8 points to be gained in the 19th period (as evidenced by your activity score of 1022) so I think that means only 8/(1030-775+1) = 3.125% of wannabe-Legendaries can be sure.
Now you're assuming theymos made a linear scale for the chance of reaching Legendary between 775-1030 Activity.
From what I've seen, I expect something like this:
b*(1-0.15*s/b)
13876  Other / Meta / Re: How do you encrypt bitcointalk messages? on: September 02, 2020, 09:10:26 AM
Why would you trust an online service if it's super easy to generate a keypair, pass around your public key and receive messages only you can decrypt afterwards...
It's not that easy, it takes a while to figure it out. If it would be super easy, everyone would be using it by now instead of sending unencrypted emails.
It would be really cool if some sort of client-side encryption can be added by default to PMs though. Maybe in Epochtalk?
13877  Bitcoin / Development & Technical Discussion / Re: The Lightning Network FAQ on: September 02, 2020, 09:06:38 AM
In order to move the coins back on-chain, you need to close the channel.
@btcduster: For relatively small amounts, I used to prefer an exchange that accepts LN-payments instead of dealing with channels. But my favourite (CoinPlaza.it) has largely increased the fees for doing so (probably because of on-chain fees). There are similar exchanges around so you might find a better deal again.

However, if you're looking to sell just something, and to instantly convert your LN Bitcoin to on-chain Bitcoin, you're better off just asking for a Bitcoin payment. LN only has benefits if you make multiple transactions to enjoy the low fees.
13878  Other / Meta / Re: Merit & new rank requirements on: September 02, 2020, 08:51:05 AM
You only have to look to the volumes of merits the merit sources gift each other, or, to those they are trying to give a helping hand to rank up (instead of letting the system work as intended).
That's exactly how theymos intended the Merit system:
But undoubtedly some people got screwed by this, and if they have decent posts, by all means, give them the 250 or 500 merit that they need to rank-up.

Another one to look at are the merit sources who will dump seven or eight merits to nearly all users (because they can't find enough posts to merit)
That too follows theymos' intention:
If they complain about amounts, tell them to complain to me. It's best if sources try to exhaust their source allocations, even if it means giving posts higher amounts than is typical. If you have 150 source merit and you only see 3 merit-worthy posts in a month, then I'd rather you over-give each of them 50 merit than let the merit expire. That way there are more people capable of sending merit, and the "merit economy" is less top-down.

then dial back to just one merit to those they are in despute with.
Can you show some examples? I can only speak for myself, but I feel like I'm more careful sending a large amount at once to a Newbie who makes one good post than to more established users.

Quote
...and it's not just "useful" posts that are showered with merits either.
Sarcasm works too, or just posts that say a lot about the person making it. For new users, all I'm looking for is "a real user", for instance asking a real question about a real problem. That's what this forum needs, and those users aren't the spammers that were the reason the Merit system was introduced.

I like your suggestion of rotating merit sources in much the same way the DT 1 are "chosen" - each month. Perhaps a strict rule no more than two months in then an automatic one month out then the fourth month you are in the pool of randomly selected.
What does that solve? There's no reason to deny good Merit sources their sMerit for a month. If they're doing a good job, they should continue, and if they're doing bad, they should be removed completely, not just for a month.

Quote
If a merit source can't find enough posts to merit, then don't just dump what you have just because you have them.
Why not? As a Merit source, it often feels like a burden to get rid of source sMerits. A few days ago, I finally managed to empty it, and now I have 106 of them waiting again! The sooner I get rid of them, the sooner they'll replenish and thus the more I can send to forum users.

Quote
It might sound draconian but cancell all merits gifted between merit sources.
Why? Merit sources can make good posts too, and when Meriting a post, I couldn't care less if someone is a Merit source or not. It may even discourage people from wanting to become a Merit source.
While we're on the subject: have you applied to be a Merit source yet?

1) We had already seen that theymos seems to be having difficulties establishing any kind of decently large sized pool of merit sources that he is willing to assign.  He started out with something like 35 merit sources, and he intermittently increased the merit sources to about 130, one year later (or maybe less than a year later).  In the past year, the number of merit sources has only been 100, so the pool seems a bit small, anyhow.
At the last change, inactive Merit sources were removed while active sources got their sMerit amount increased. Those changes lead to more sMerit being distributed.

Quote
I have always had a policy to just spend 1 merit per post, with the exception of 2 or three merits from time to time, but even I have found that giving one merit per post can take a lot of time, sometimes, and sometimes I just feel that I do not have that much time to be reading posts.
I started with 1 sMerit at a time, and even after my first source increase I sticked to that. But with 826 sMerit in 30 days I can't keep up that way. I used 4 at a time for a while, until I made the same mistake twice by sending 44 by accident. I now often send 6, so I can't accidentally send 66.
Suchmoon has been very busy with 2555 sMerit in 30 days!

Here is one example of service :
https://privnote.com
I'd be very careful trusting services like this. It's best to assume they keep and analyze all posts. There are also phishing sites trying to steal your Bitcoins.
13880  Other / Meta / Re: I know exactly when I will rank up! on: September 02, 2020, 07:48:18 AM
What is puzzling me is at what exact activity you are supposed to rank up. We all have much more posts than activity so, you get 14 with every new post in the new round. From 1022 til 1030 you have 8 different possibilities, so we don't really know.
One way to find out is deleting a couple thousand posts
