141  Economy / Speculation / Re: Are we in a Bear Market right now? on: November 03, 2012, 11:53:10 PM
You should give a timescale for this type of questions.

Looking at the last 3 years, I would say a bull market  Wink
142  Economy / Speculation / Re: Gold collapsing. Bitcoin UP. on: November 03, 2012, 11:45:14 PM
here's an interesting fact.

we've had 70 straight weeks of upward revisions to the Initial Claims Report for unemployment:  http://biz.yahoo.com/c/terms/claims.html

Ha ha, nice stat ! Someone should look for GDP revisions, there might be a bias too  Grin

Looking at the USDX it seems the other FIAT currencies should experience roughly the same rate of debasing.

Consumer prices seem high to me more frequently and for a wider range of products lately, so I think shit is finally trickling down. I expect this to increase.

Is honey a good indicator? For some unknown reason I think that is the case.

Not only there's a problem with bees, but i wouldn't consider honey fungible. There's an infinity of honeys out there, depending on the strain of bees and the kind of nectar they are collecting. And I'm not talking about honey debasement (cut with syrup, the cheap shit you can find in stores)

To come back on the eternal inflation/deflation debate, I have to admit US administration did a good job so far at keeping stocks from collapsing while keeping oil (and metals) from exploding. Probably not sustainable, but nicely done. We'll see how things evolve after the election, and in which way.
The results will probably don't matter much, though an interesting fact is that Wall Street is clearly rooting for Romney (including the (in)famous Goldman Sachs), and that Obama seems to be in the lead (at least according to InTrade, and looking at campaign contributions).

I still have troubles thinking Goldman Sachs doesn't rule the world, but maybe some things might change in a few months.

Just out:
Jim Willie: ''Central Bank Gold Rehypothecation Scandal to Take Gold to $5,000/oz''
http://www.silverdoctors.com/jim-willie-central-bank-gold-rehypothecation-scandal-to-take-gold-to-5000oz/

is there a TLDR version?

Too much "IOU Gold" around. This is going to deflate, and gold value will go up. Quite the same idea as for USD.

do you have any idea how long Willie has been saying this?  his letters are teaming with doom and gloom.  got tired of reading him year after year.

I'm not reading him for years (not reading him that much tbh), but according to the rise in the price of PM he's not especially wrong imo.

WU looks like a buy to me down here.

I'd cover that short pronto Wink

Care to explain that (and give a timescale ?)
Looks to me like a great long term short
144  Economy / Speculation / Re: Wall Observer - MtGoxUSD wall movement tracker on: October 25, 2012, 10:57:26 PM
I like all the bearish sentiment around here these days.

Same here Smiley
Thanks guys, I'll buy this dip. Didn't thought I'll see 10.x again
Please feel free to go on selling, I would love to see single digits Smiley
145  Bitcoin / Project Development / Re: ICBIT Derivatives Market (USD/BTC futures trading) - LIVE on: October 18, 2012, 09:00:41 PM
Yup, and it looks like the 8PM tick down to 10$ passed through the bids
146  Bitcoin / Press / Re: 2012-10-11 arte Abendnachrichten :) on: October 12, 2012, 07:19:42 AM
Great coverage.
Arte is informing a lot these days about how our financial systems sucks, and this report is in this line, presenting bitcoin as a solution.
To be fair, in France it is one of the less watched tv news. But audience is still probably in the 6 low figures
147  Economy / Speculation / Re: Gold collapsing. Bitcoin UP. on: October 10, 2012, 11:21:27 PM
then you're going to have to explain to me why the Yen has been going up for the last coupla decades in the face of a growing debt/GDP of approx. 230% and despite the printing of trillions of Yen to stimulate the economy.  no modern financial system with a mature bond market has ever had a hyperinflation.

That a good point. I'll have to think more about it (belgian beer is too strong for me to think, but so tasty  Grin)
The first thing which come to mind is : Who is selling USD to buy JPY ? Why ?
Second one is : Is it really sustainable ? How ?

I'll (try to) answer to you when I'll sober up
148  Economy / Speculation / Re: Thoughts on mid term gain Litecoin v. Bitcoin on: October 10, 2012, 11:11:43 PM
Litecoins will eventually die.  Namecoin is much better than Litecoin.

Any logic or reasoning behind this thought?

No, not really.  Just my gut.  Maybe I'm wrong.

There is something to this. Namecoin is build to be a database (of DNS primarily, but other things could/will emerge, like a name->btc address).
Litecoin is just an attempt to solve the "slow" confirmation problem, while it doesn't solve the "instant" confirmation problem needed (for which the solution already exist, namely green addresses).
So I agree with jimbobway. Namecoin is much better than Litecoin (imho).

Namecoin is a share in this decentralized database, which will (perhaps) grow.
Litecoin is a solution to a fake problem.

Just my 2 satoshis
149  Economy / Speculation / Re: Gold collapsing. Bitcoin UP. on: October 10, 2012, 01:22:58 PM
No, we like to hear your bearish opinions on PM. I still disagree with it, but it definitely helps to question my reasoning.

I agree with most of what you say, except the fact that they'll avoid cheapening the dollar, to avoid the dangerous consequences of it.
They have a debt to pay back, that doesn't work with a strong dollar policy. If that triggers revolutions in other countries, too bad for the people, but that's a good opportunity to place some puppet as a liberator.

As for the current price action, we still are in this 1750-1800 range. So the action on the last 4 weeks was just noise. Once we have a clear breakout up or down, that'll be a signal.
150  Bitcoin / Project Development / Re: ICBIT Derivatives Market (USD/BTC futures trading) - LIVE on: October 06, 2012, 09:13:53 AM
my main gripe is that I cannot withdraw bitcoins without closing all contracts (see earlier in this thread).  I trust that will be fixed soon.

It's fixed now, please give it a try.

Thanks for that  Smiley

What thoughts do you have on the legal circumstances for ICBIT? Does it require certain licenses to broker in futures contracts?
As I said, we are talking to lawyers regarding this, but without any hurry.

With what seems to happen regarding GLBSE, are you going to speed this up ?
151  Economy / Speculation / Re: [NEWS] Bit4x.com - First FOREX accepts bitcoin! - 1:1000 Leverage!!! on: October 02, 2012, 06:57:39 PM
It is not complicated, i'll report, again, one of the trade i did these days:

Account leverage 1:10
Account deposit 100 btc
Allowed to open a position size of 0.01 lots MAX

Opened long position on EUR/USD at 1.28882 on 12 sept 2012
Closed long position on EUR/USD at 1.31143 on 14 sept 2012

1.31143 divided by 1.28882 = 1.01754318 or ~1.75%

1.75% profit on my position times 10 ( the leverage of my account)  =17.54%

17.54% of 100 btc of position size = 17.54 btc profit

account now 117 btc from 100btc

note: position margin size VISUALIZED on mt4 while the TRADE WAS OPEN was 77 because they convert the magin size with actual eur/usd cross ratio (100/1.29=~77) i think due to an internal technical reason of the broker, this doesnt affect your trading, your PROFIT IS COMPUTED USING 100 BTC.

INCREASING THE LEVERAGE wouldn't have changed the sort of that example, it would have simply reduced the margin from 77 down to 7.7 in the case of 100 to 1 leverage and so on..., to increase the margin you have to increase the POSITION SIZE IN LOTS

Hope it is clear:)

Cya

Can you explain the same trade with BTC/USD loosing, say, 20% meanwhile ?
152  Economy / Speculation / Re: [NEWS] Bit4x.com - First FOREX accepts bitcoin! - 1:1000 Leverage!!! on: October 02, 2012, 06:34:12 PM
Yep, but it'll affect your margin. If BTC/USD is up, your margin is increased, and vice-versa. Right ?

Accually no, if you want to go into details, margin is affected by EUR/USD rate, but its going in your favour anyway.
There seems to be no way around this until the BTC will be one of the 'official' Forex currencies. You can read about margin details here: http://btctrading.wordpress.com/2012/10/01/714/

If your margin is denominated is BTC for a trade on EUR/USD, then it has to be affected by BTC/USD (and/or BTC/EUR).
If your margin is not denominated in BTC, say in USD, then it means that your short BTC/USD (because you had to sell btc to get usd margin).

Disclosure : Had an exhausting day, I may be saying crap. Please explain me all the transactions when opening a position, that could work better.

153  Economy / Speculation / Re: Gold collapsing. Bitcoin UP. on: October 02, 2012, 06:23:15 PM
So you think oil exporters don't pile up some USD ? I would think so.
What if they pile up everything in treasuries, what's the effect on USD ?
154  Economy / Speculation / Re: [NEWS] Bit4x.com - First FOREX accepts bitcoin! - 1:1000 Leverage!!! on: October 02, 2012, 05:15:57 PM
Ok, got it. So it's a standard forex platform where your account is in BTC.
Thus you are subject to risk from BTC variations, without being able to hedge it.

Is the BTC/USD rate the one from MtGox ?

BTC/USD rate is irrelevant for your trading limits and whatnot.

Quote
Current Bitcoin exchange rates won't affect your trading limits. With the minimum deposit for opening a Live account, 100 BTC and 1:10 leverage you can trade up to 0.01 lot. With the same deposit and 1:100 leverage you can trade up to 0.1 lot and so on.

Yep, but it'll affect your margin. If BTC/USD is up, your margin is increased, and vice-versa. Right ?
So if an event like the pirate default happens, your margin can be cut in half in 3 days.

Yes, your Bitcoin deposits are never converted into fiat or any other form and are always kept safe in encrypted cold storage by kakobrekla, a well known member of Bitcoin OTC.

Anyone knows him ?
Enky1974 > How did you get to be a beta tester ? Did they asked for testers in this forum ?

Would be so nice if it was a quality (with MT4), legit service.
157  Economy / Speculation / Re: Gold collapsing. Bitcoin UP. on: October 01, 2012, 12:45:54 PM
USD back over 80.  Yo Baby!

USDX doesn't mean much about the value of the currency (just an indicator to see how USD is doing against EUR, JPY, GBP and others)
Nice comex open so far  Shocked
158  Economy / Service Discussion / Re: Care about Bitcoin? STAY AWAY from the "Bitcoin Fundation" on: September 30, 2012, 10:36:34 PM
Alternatively, govt can go take a hike.

Should we wait for them to do so ?

I am concerned about the bitcoin foundation, but at the same time i am very hopeful about what i promises to deliver.

It is going to be kinda cool to have a bitcoin person to shake hands with the money regulators and try make bitcoin an official currency, maybe convince other big money-transactors to get on board with integrating bitcoin, protecting us from laws, etc.

But it does put a lot of power in the hands of 1 team.  What if the hammer fell and we the bitcoin foundation, being responsible for bitcoin.org, the bitcoin-qt client, etc was forced to put in an update to track users or something?  if it were possible, that is.  it would give a group of people the power to do such things, if a government was forcing them to do so.

There should be a seperate foundation for development on the official bitcoin client than the one that knock on the government's door.

If there was no foundation, the hammer could have fell on Gavin and other developpers. If there is a development-only foundation, the hammer could also fall on them.
Anyway, this is not enforcable. Everyone is free to choose which blockchain they want to use.
159  Economy / Service Discussion / Re: There is no ANY update about bitcoinica? We just got fucked and that's it? on: September 30, 2012, 10:26:42 PM
Is there any update about bitcoinica?

It seems bitcoinica's website cannot be opened now.

We are waiting for the company to be put into liquidation.
It could have been done quickly if Patrick Strateman (phantomcircuit) was willing to help customers instead of trolling.
But apparently we'll have to wait for the court to force the liquidation.
160  Bitcoin / Bitcoin Discussion / Re: I've just been robbed :-( on: September 29, 2012, 12:44:26 AM
That ssh log message indicates they accessed using your public key. How on earth did they get that? Did you access from some other systems that they may have also got access to? This is pretty common. This means you need to check all other computers that previously you used to connect to your laptop. A public key is not more safe than a password if it's left laying around on various systems.

People often use a key for automated access (scripts etc). If you do that it should be for a different, limited user that can only do the very limited functions you intent to automate.
I don't understand it either, apparently they got first into my home machine (with password auth enabled), grabbed the private key for my work machine and logged in there. No idea as to how.

Keylogger somewhere ? Password shared with a compromised website ?
Sorry for you loss, and good luck with your research. And thanks for doing research on bitcoin
