MERIT, Huh!  What is it good for?  Absolutely nothin'.

Merit was created to spur members to contribute qualitatively and ranks members according to their interactions. It's not a direct reflection of cryptocurrency knowledge but it is to an extent.
It has no on forum use, but decides your stakes on bounty, and now with the one merit requirement if you can join a bounty at all.

Everyone wants to be appreciated and recognized.
Don't have the wrong perspective of the forum ranks.
Of course you can completely ignore merits and simply learn from others, but if you're going to contribute you would like it to relieve acceptance or be useful to someone and that is reflected in the merits it gets.
142  Other / Beginners & Help / Re: New member intro. on: October 30, 2018, 05:39:55 AM
Welcome!
Those are good starts to cryptocurrency investment. While diversifying your holdings and expanding always consider the risks associated with altcoin and ICO investments.
Feel free to ask any question or discuss anything cryptocurrency related.
143  Other / Meta / Re: What about these accounts? on: October 29, 2018, 05:11:45 PM
Issues like this presents a situation where people try to cleverly interprete the rules to suit their agenda, but most of those bumps dated months back are still left up and the rules states that;

21. Old bumps should be deleted. [2]

I don't know which specific action can be taken against those users. It's mostly down to the moderators discretion whether or not to act.

Hi mate, with all due respect, you haven't understood anything. Those are not old bumps.

I interpreted that rule to mean when repeatedly bumping a thread, (which you can do every 24hours) you should delete old bumps after posting new ones.
I don't know what you mean by 'not old bumps'
Looks like continuous bumping to me.
I could be wrong of course.

I don't know which specific action can be taken against those users. It's mostly down to the moderators discretion whether or not to act. Such give away threads should be discouraged.
145  Other / Meta / Re: ## Autoban please help ## on: October 29, 2018, 07:14:56 AM
is there is a chance to lift the Bann or its time to say goodbye to satoshios forum forever?

Of course you can stick around on read only mode, if you have any interest in learning and keeping in touch with the largest cryptocurrency forum.
Of not, then that's one more defaulter out the door.
146  Other / Beginners & Help / An extra layer of security - Back up your 2FA on: October 29, 2018, 07:11:51 AM
2FA is a measure that serves as an extra layer of security, it requires users to provide added information after the password before gaining access to an account.
There is SMS authentication,
EMAIL authentication, and the most commonly used, google authenticator.

Google authenticator is a security app which is linked to an account using a special code which can be typed or scanned, and it generates 6 digit keys which change every few minutes and without them no one can access the account being protected.
Multiple accounts can be protected using one google authenticator app and there is no way any unauthorized user can get access to the account.

This also means if the true owner for some reason or unforeseen circumstances lost the device where the Google authenticate is installed, even they will not be able to access their personal accounts.

That's why it is advisable to always back up your 2FA by saving the code used to enable it, and hence allow it to be enabled on another device.
If you didn't back up, there's no way of getting the code after it has been enabled.
The best option is to disable 2FA, and then request for another code to enable it (every new code is unique) then you can safely back up your 2FA and have your account fully protected.
147  Alternate cryptocurrencies / Altcoin Discussion / Re: Which cryptocurrency is best for storing money? on: October 29, 2018, 03:48:50 AM
I trusted Bitcoin. I feel I lose a lot of money when storing Bitcoin. I don't know and do not want to follow the river course jumps. I want to learn something new. I believe It's possible.

Bitcoin is not and never should be treated as a store of value. If you wish to store funds you can always go with your nations traditional fist currency.
Bitcoin is an investment option and is prone to volatility and fluctuations.
It is also a payment option, although not widely used as yet.
Stable currencies claim to provide stability to cryptocurrency enthusiast while offering the stability of fiat, but by collaterization it has alreadg lost the quality of decentralization and public audits are not readily made available.

And remember, it's not a loss until you sell!
148  Economy / Speculation / Re: People are Calm!! on: October 29, 2018, 03:39:52 AM
This was not the best cryptocurrency year on many fronts, but there are lots of positives to take from it.
It's vale has dropped steadily since January, but has stabilized over the past six months. And wide fluctuations have greatly reduced, also the price has held off at a much higher bottom than previous years.

The issue of scam (mostly ICOs) and hacks has increased but have always been present and not directly linked to bitcoin.
149  Other / Meta / Re: New Ranking System and Benefit on: October 28, 2018, 05:34:08 PM
After the change was made, every thread which provides information regarding the merit system was updated. This for example https://bitcointalk.org/index.php?topic=2818350.0
The mods were efficient in keeping everything up to date, and a new thread is highly unnecessary
150  Other / Beginners & Help / Re: How MERIT changes the culture of this forum on: October 28, 2018, 01:45:27 PM
I am really amaze with the positive effects of merit and how it changes the forum.

1. A helping hand from the community was offered and expanded to the admin who are reporting those scammers, cheaters and junk posters.
2. The members are more aware with the rules and regulations in the forum.
3. Helpful threads are created to help each other to gain more knowledge with cryptocurrency, how to make a presentable thread and step by step guide was being offered to the community if you have something you don't understand.
4. Negative trust looks like used actively for those members who don't play fair and square

Now 1, 2, and 4 are not actively related to merits. You don't need the promise of a reward to contribute positively. But a lot of people were abusing the system and using it for their own gain, why the 'one merit system's was implemented. To discourage spammers and farmers. And encourage more active interaction in the forum.
Repeated threads have been made about merits, and it is now a hackneyed topic.
151  Other / Beginners & Help / Re: Why use Bitcoin? on: October 27, 2018, 06:36:44 PM
There are so many reasons why we should use
It has various applications and qualities as an efficient payment option.

People rather choose to merely own bitcoin and Hodl it for it's profit potential, without actively putting it to use. And merchants who accept bitcoin payment use processors so, it is similar to accepting fiat payment.
Admittedly it's just a few years in and adoption has been growing and should continue to grow.
But, we need more active participation of BTC holders.
152  Other / Meta / Re: Is it legal to have public alt accounts? on: October 27, 2018, 06:23:09 PM
Having an alt account is not a violation of forum rules, but there are guidelines surrounding the use of alt accounts, and those accounts could have been red tagged for some other form of abuse.

Bumping threads with multiple accounts in quick succession is also a violation.

Yet everywhere I look, almost everyone who ever declares publicly that he owns an alt account, gets red-trusted.

Can you point out a situation where a user was banned for having alts?

There are a number of users that are known publicly to own alts, that have not all been banned. You can only be tagged or banned if you violate forum rules and guidelines.
153  Other / Beginners & Help / Re: Link to my Bitcointalk Profile on: October 27, 2018, 06:18:39 PM
To get your profile link yourself;
- Click on profile at the top icons
- Then click on summary, the page would still be same but the URL at the top would change.
- You'd get a link like this; https://bitcointalk.org/index.php?action=profile;u=2397410;sa=summary
For clarity you can clear out the lat word and characters till its left just the numbers, like, https://bitcointalk.org/index.php?action=profile;u=2397410.
154  Other / Meta / Re: Dare To Challenge The Forum on: October 26, 2018, 01:32:16 PM
As regards your poll no, I don't think we can go a week without a merit discussion or a ban appeal.
There has been an increase in banned and nuked accounts recently, hence the increase in appeal threads.

And I personally have no problem with that as banned members ignorantly expose their alts which some have (or would have) used to post outside meta and they can be banned as well.

And as for merit posts, the best way to discourage them is to ignore such posts, as those members would be discouraged from making such posts if it doesn't get attention.
But that is unlikely to happen as most newbies would still give the same repetitive advise to such posts maybe in an attempt to get attention themselves.
155  Other / Beginners & Help / Re: How recover my hacked account? on: October 26, 2018, 10:50:36 AM
You need to prove that you own the account, by signing a message using an address used on your hacked account.

If he/she no longer has access to the account, then they can not sign the address linked to the account. It could only have been done when they were actively in control of the account. Which if they did he would have to follow the instruction in the link already provided on the first comment.

And also this thread belongs in Meta, so OP you could kindly move it using the option at the bottom left.
You'd get more assistance there.
156  Bitcoin / Bitcoin Discussion / Re: cryptocurrency vs civic/complementary currency on: October 26, 2018, 05:39:48 AM
There is very little similarities between cryptocurrency and complementary currency, besides the fact that they are both alternatives to fiat currency.
Complementary currencies are issued locally in exchange for fiat or some other commodity even trash like the Bus Token issued in Curitiba, Brazil to encourage locals to clean up the city. And the tokens where accepted and used to pay for bus rides.

Complementary currencies are operated locally,  while bitcoin is borderless and not tied to any locality or country.

Congratulations on achieving thus milestone in little less than a year. And also encouraging others by sharing your successes.
And.through reading, learning and helping we could also rise up the ranks.
158  Other / Meta / Re: New Child Board for banned users... on: October 25, 2018, 05:43:20 AM
It is quite an excellent idea and would help unclog the mass of spam on the meta thread.
But I'd suggest a board of its own, rather than a child board.

Most of these uses barely go through the rules and hardly venture to other boards apart from the alt section and there's a high chance they would miss a child board and have maybe never posted on one, and it would be a series of redirection links from members when they continue posting in meta.
But an actual board is more difficult to miss.

But if a board or a child board is opened, strict moderation would have to be used to pass the message home, thrashing any thread made on meta about ban appeal, and banning the accounts, as h that can be termed as ban evasion when posting outside the appropriate board. That should speed up the transition.
159  Economy / Economics / Re: What are the odds that the government/banks will truly create their own coin? on: October 24, 2018, 03:28:45 PM
Eventually, they will have to switch their assets into digital tokens just so they can keep up with the latest technology that the governments would soon use.

I doubt that.
I don't think fiat would capitulate and switch to the blockchain. That's a fancy way of saying bitcoin (or some cryptocurrency) would become the globally accepted currency, while the financial system as we know it would collapse.

Decentralization is an exciting concept and the freedom it offers makes the deviant few switch over to this side. But governments and banks would not surrender control. And except cryptocurrency becomes regulated, fiat would remain as it is.
160  Other / Meta / Re: hay hay i have been banned, please somebody explain to me (-_-') on: October 24, 2018, 03:14:23 PM
Nothing can be dine with your new account or any other account you open.
The ban is on you, the user, and applies to any account connected to you.
I would advise you go through the rules, but it's too late, you can only be a reader on the forum now.

What you couldn't do while active, I don't see you doing it while not, so this is probably goodbye
