Outside the lab, the fluid medium is the atmosphere and the applied electric field is between the firmament and the ground. This is why the ground is 'down', the sky is 'up' and, it's the underlying mechanism behind density and buoyancy or why objects fall.

Watch it again, and again, and again, then remember that it's not possible for the earth to be a ball. If the camera is 36.5 km above what is claimed to be an "oblate spheroid" with a ~6,371 km radius and there is earth directly in front of it, then the surface of the earth is an extended plain not a sphere.
