141  Economy / Micro Earnings / Re: Free Bitcoin Sites *and* Free Newbie Lotto on: March 04, 2013, 09:26:03 PM
*Khal, if you don't already know, is the main developer for the Namecoin project.  Even though it seems not much has happened with it recently I feel it has a lot of potential.  I feel it is one of the few, if not only, legitimate cryptocurrencies besides Bitcoin ( meaning that it is not competing with Bitcoin and actually has valid uses, unlike many of these other scamcoins which seem to be little more than pump-n-dump schemes for those who feel bad, thinking they missed out on being a Bitcoin early adopter... incorrectly in my opinion since I feel Bitcoin is still in its early adopter phase. ).

The use of a blockchain for decentralized DNS purposes, I believe, was actually talked about by Satoshi Nakamoto in his whitepaper... or was it later in his forum discussions? ( Any errors in this explanation are mine; feel free to correct me if I have anything wrong. And I am saying all this on my own. Khal didn't ask me to do this. )

You can learn about Namecoin here: http://dot-bit.org

If you are a developer or can help that project in any way please feel free to get in touch with him and offer your services.   Smiley
He ! Thank you for the support Smiley
142  Economy / Service Announcements / Re: [ANNOUNCE] Free bitcoins with Surf4Bitcoin.com on: March 04, 2013, 12:36:00 AM
Not a lot of people are using the surf4bitcoin service, because we are just launching it (3 now).
Both projects (surf4bitcoin and CharityAd) have separated accounts, the number of users at CharityAd doesn't count in surf4bitcoin.

If you look at http://charityad.org/Stats, which has been started several month ago, you'll see that the money generated is about 250$ per month!

So, it may not be interesting enough for you now (0.10BTC per week), but as more and more users will install it, the winnings will be much higher.
Still not conviced ? :p

Thanks for the answers.

Do you have any website recommendations where we might see your ads in place of others?

And good luck in getting things moving with namecoin.   Smiley
When I see "our ads" it doesn't mean that we manage ads directly.
We have no ads on our side (excepts if we want to promote the project on ad networks, but that's another story).
Ads displayed by the plugin are taken from other ad networks.

Here is a small workflow :
Default ads => intercepted by the plugin => redirected to our server => the server select an ad network where we have an account => an ad is displayed by the chosen ad network.
The main difference is that we gain money on this ad and can make donations/bitcoin games/etc with that.

So, the ads you'll see will come from google, adnetwork or advertstream for example.
149  Economy / Games and rounds / Re: Free bitcoins for everyone! Yes, Everyone :) on: March 03, 2013, 05:58:48 PM
As trustworthy as I am, so get your own opinion :p
I'm the main namecoin developer (even if not active at all on it since several month, gasp).

I've added some replies to Portnoy questions here :
https://bitcointalk.org/index.php?topic=148697.msg1578724#msg1578724

And, you can check the CharityAd website too and see that we make real donations :

150  Economy / Service Announcements / Re: [ANNOUNCE] Free bitcoins with Surf4Bitcoin.com on: March 03, 2013, 05:52:57 PM
Will this affect other web-surfing/video-viewing/ad-clicking free bitcoin services?
It will not affect your usage of web-surfing/video-viewing/ad-clicking free bitcoin services (however, it is not guaranteed bug free :p).

What do I do after installing the plugin, just surf websites as I would do normally?
Yes. If you've seen the congratulation page on surf4bitcoin and it said you the plugin is installed, it is ok.

Do I have to sign up somewhere and input a BTC address? How will you determine, and contact, a winner in the contest and how will you know where to send the BTC?
No registration is required. The winner will show a specific ad from us that will ask him to enter his address.

Why not spread the BTC among all the users instead of having a contest to give a prize to just one per month?
The amount of BTC each person would gain per week would be something like 0,001BTC. I think is it more interesting to chose one person each week. When a lot of people will be using the plugin, we could change to a draw per day for exemple.

Will this plugin be tracking my online activity and storing my personal information etc.?
This plugin only need to intercept some ad requests and redirect them to our own ads. In order to be sure the plugin is working and used, we have an ad counter on our side, but no personal information.

Will it be throwing more spam at me?
Not at all :p
The good thing is that it'll even remove some popups (we need to support more ad networks [the plugin is mainly used by french people for now], so don't hesitate to post links of website where you've seen a popup and we can block it)

Thanks
Thank you for your question, it'll help us to improve the About page :p
Hope to see you using it soon :p

Will you use some of the money you make from this to do something for namecoin and bring it back from the dead? Or is namecoin a lost cause?    Undecided
I had no time to give to namecoins those last months (spent on charityad mainly), and we still lack support from developers or anybody. Maybe there are some things that could be done to improve this ?
Now that i'm a bit more available (I started to read this forum again some weeks ago :p), i'll take so time to make things evolve a bit ( do you know a magical way to get help from people ? :p).

157  Bitcoin / Development & Technical Discussion / Re: Combining Bitcoin and the Ripple -> fast, scalable, decentralized and more on: February 26, 2013, 10:14:57 PM
The amount of Bitcoins you put in shared link with a neighbor should be adjusted with your trust in this neighbor.
The more you trust it over time (after hundreds of tx exchanges), the more you can increase your shared account. This will limit the number of paralyzed coins and allow to connect to several nodes when arriving in the network.

I think the current problem of "deny of service" should be solved (and as you said, the nLocktime is not enough)

As said by TierNolan, new servers should not all connect to your node when arriving in the network.

Edit (i' read a bit more the paper :p) : One thing i don't understand is how the payment is performed between node 1 & 3 ?
How to be sure node 2 will "transmit" it to node 3 ?

So, a new question : what prevents a node to generate a lot of tx and asking for rollback ? (DoS)

Hi guys. I have been interested in Namecoin for quite some time, but I'm not sure of exactly who are the relative representatives (assuming Coblee would be for Litecoin, Gavin would be for Bitcoin, etc).

Who would I contact about the actual domain namecoin.info for example or a major security flaw or anything like that?

khalahan is now the lead dev., that said he can be troublesome to get hold of ... try here http://dot-bit.org/IRC_Channels or here also http://dot-bit.org/forum/index.php
Hi,
you can contact me at khal at dot-bit . org

completely missed the sendtoalias command.
Yes, it's working (it as a beta version, may still change, so it is only present in my github tree : https://github.com/khalahan/namecoin)

would be interesting to also add a sendbtctoalias command that would open a bitcoin uri: bitcoin:1bitcoinaddress
Indeed, it could be a simple way to start managing bitcoin aliases.
Does the main client bitcoin client support uri schemes ?
