Try Catalyst 12.11beta and GUIMiner and see what it reports as your MH/s. I've had problems with 13.1 and later.

Look long-term.  What you should really hope is that miners that make insane profits, keep reinvesting to secure the network.  I will do it as long as I can.

The security of the network also relies on strength in numbers / number of distributed nodes.
With a select few nodes doing all the work it's easier to target them for DDOS, theft, government confiscation, or even drone strike.  Wink

Some might laugh, but all they need to do is label you a terrorist, Bernard von NotHaus, the creator of the Liberty Dollar was labeled as a domestic terrorist by the FBI, and arrested, $7m gold/silver backing his money seized.  Shocked

“Attempts to undermine the legitimate currency of this country are simply a unique form of domestic terrorism,” U.S. Attorney Tompkins said in announcing the verdict. “While these forms of anti-government activities do not involve violence, they are every bit as insidious and represent a clear and present danger to the economic stability of this country,” she added. “We are determined to meet these threats through infiltration, disruption, and dismantling of organizations which seek to challenge the legitimacy of our democratic form of government.”

It amazes me that we created a new currency to wrestle away the printing press from an elite few and you all hunger to go back to the same situation.  Huh  Avalon does claim to do it's work to support the Bitcoin network (they didn't want BFL to be a monopoly supplier), I just point out the hypocrisy of their actions.

1425  Other / Beginners & Help / Re: Is bitcoin mining actually legal? on: March 22, 2013, 12:44:40 PM
....
If you buy goods for BTC 1, you have no legal backing, and no tax liability. (except in USA who made barter taxable!)

Not sure that's correct in Europe, as far as I know any contractually agreed exchange of goods is legally binding. So if you wanted to exchange a pile of rocks for a working bicycle but got a faulty bicycle you could take the bicycle seller to court to get your rocks back.

You have to give the barter transaction a legal tender value then it becomes a swap contract.
1426  Other / Beginners & Help / Re: Is bitcoin mining actually legal? on: March 22, 2013, 12:14:06 PM
Bitcoin is legal, just as PayPal, Zynga Dollars, and poker chips are.

It's not illegal to create your own money, only illegal to counterfeit legal tender.

Legal tender has the full backing of the state, bitcoin doesn't.

If you buy goods for BTC 1 / $70 you have legal binding contract recognised by the law and tax man!

If you buy goods for BTC 1, you have no legal backing, and no tax liability. (except in USA who made barter taxable!)
1427  Other / Beginners & Help / Re: asic or fpga witch one is better on: March 22, 2013, 12:06:59 PM
ASIC, and the only people with a working system on the free market today http://launch.avalon-asics.com
just raised their price to 88 BTC about $6000. They only take bitcoin and you have to wait 2 months for delivery!

The cheapest way to mine bitcoin by putting a graphics card in your PC.
You can get an Ati 5830 off ebay for £60/$90 and mine 260MH/s. (about BTC 0.8 pm)

Bitcoin transaction fees does not go to game developers, they go to miners.

Correction, they go to pool owners. Do check with whoever is running your mining pool what happens to those transaction fees! Grin
1429  Other / Beginners & Help / Re: Wouldn't it be more fair if the bitcoins were shared equally? on: March 22, 2013, 11:51:05 AM
They tried to solve this problem with LiteCoin (probably the 2nd best crypto-currency) by making it harder to run away from a CPU/GPU.

Anyone who can build a mining rig with non-off the shelf components like FPGA or ASIC can gain a huge cost/speed advantage over the other miners in the market especially if they keep it to themself.

That seems to be happening with ASIC right now and I do worry about it concentrating the network and killing the project. Bitcoin is becoming less and less the peoples coin, and more and more the coin of the select few.

I would like to see some smaller unit or cheaper one from Avalon.

Agree. If you were really doing this for the love of bitcoin, as they claim, you would sell your units with 1,2,3,4 modules at different price points to get them out to widest possible audience.

None for Bitcoin. More memory just means you can run games at a higher resolution or with more textures.
LiteCoin may mine better with more memory though.

I've never had any problems with my Sapphire 5830s but I never mess with voltages to get them to 300MH/s.
I use Sapphire ones with a huge heatsing, 5 heatpipes, and a large fan.
Keeping the VRMs cool is important and some cards with cheap coolers don't do a good enough job.
Saving money using a cheap ring cooler "XFX" is a false economy IMHO.

Catalyst 12.11beta from your cards manufacturer!
OEM Cards run at half speed on AMD drivers.

Bullshit. Can you link to a post where this has been proven to be true?

LOL Smiley

>It was bestbuy/XFX's becision to release an OEM 6770 as retail.

>>amd hasn't released it yet for public so it's not even mentioned in the driver files, thats the reason the ccc gives op problems about compatibility

>>>Just to give everyone a heads up. I just spoke to AMD and they are not supporting the 6770 card for retail. Mark stated they have talked about releasing it to retail but have not made this step as of yet. He also checked all driver files to see if they had a driver for the 6770 and the 6750. He stated they do not have any support for these. He also checked the beta 11.4 and there is no plans to have a 6770 driver on there either.

I always buy OEM (brown box) graphics cards because you can save £20/$30 each. I've had XFX 6770s that were not recognised by AMD drivers and Sapphire 7850s that run at half clock speed on AMD drivers (They seem to be power saving with self adjusting volt/clock lock). In both cases using the drivers from the manufacturers web site solved the problems.
1434  Other / Beginners & Help / Re: GPU mining,is it safe to use them at full power or will last longer underclocked on: March 22, 2013, 01:45:28 AM
If you avoid volt mods you will be fine.
1435  Other / Beginners & Help / Re: Will the surge of ASIC's decrease value? on: March 22, 2013, 01:44:40 AM
Short term no, the only one on sale required 88BTC to buy driving up demand for Bitcoins
Long term yes, they require less power to hash.
1436  Other / Beginners & Help / Re: Bitcoin is WAY too confusing for the average person on: March 22, 2013, 01:40:25 AM
Agree, if your parents cannot use it, it's too complicated.

If you cannot explain it in one paragraph it's too complicated.

People use services not software.

Geeks with Asperger Syndrome will never understand this.

This is why most of them are jobless and girl-friendless.
1437  Other / CPU/GPU Bitcoin mining hardware / Re: How Often Do Cards Blow Up? on: March 22, 2013, 12:50:22 AM
5770 and 6770 are very hot and stressed out cards. I tend to avoid xx70s and use xx30s/xx50s

The only card I've ever had die was a XFX 6770. Cooler is too small IMHO. Then one hot summer night it died.

Get some nice 5830s instead, with a big fan and big cooler, similar price but 260MH/s.

People are so short sighted when their eyes are filled with greed.  Cool
1440  Bitcoin / Hardware / Re: Why Avalon's "greed" is good on: March 21, 2013, 09:17:23 PM
Why Avalons greed is bad..

1) Only those who already own an ASIC can generate enough Bitcoins to buy the next Avalon ASIC run.
2) This will concentrate Bitcoin block solving power into just a small amount of hands.
3) This flies in the face of what Bitcoin was supposed to be, a large distributed network of nodes.
4) If this continues you run the risk of the Bitcoin community abandoning the project for LiteCoin.
