If the capabilities were available in the 1940's, rest assured the US would have absolutely utilized these tools.

As far as current affairs are concerned, I'm not arguing the fact that the NSA's spying capabilities come in conflict with the constitution, rather I am merely stating that the NSA is above reproach, with security clearances above that of the President's.  This is definitely cause for concern, but there's really nothing congress or anyone can do about it.  As long as Ibrahim al-Asiri (Saudi elite bombmaker residing in Yemen) and Ayman al-Zawahri (al-Qaida #1) are at large, don't expect the status quo to change.
Now that is the sickest, twisted bunch of bull I have seen in a while.  You've managed to mangle every sentence, dude.

1.  If the capabilities were available in the 1940's, rest assured the US would have absolutely utilized these tools.

Your opinion, unsubstantiated and unsubstantiatable.

2. As far as current affairs are concerned, I'm not arguing the fact that the NSA's spying capabilities come in conflict with the constitution

CAPABILITIES are not in conflict with the constitution.  ACTIONS are.

3.  I am merely stating that the NSA is above reproach, with security clearances above that of the President's.  This is definitely cause for concern, but there's really nothing congress or anyone can do about it.

Wrong, the NSA is not above reproach.  Reproach is not determined by security clearance.

4.  As long as Ibrahim al-Asiri (Saudi elite bombmaker residing in Yemen) and Ayman al-Zawahri (al-Qaida #1) are at large, don't expect the status quo to change.

What they said "As along as OBL is at large" but you can move the sliding timescale forward to make anything true you want?

14623  Other / Politics & Society / Re: PRISM - Who else is disgusted by this? on: August 12, 2013, 12:41:33 AM
There are plenty other classified programs within the NSA that'll make you lose your lunch, this is small potatoes.
Well, i happen to like small potatoes.  Like the ones served as an appetizer in New Orleanz.  Small red potatoes.  Now those NSA potateoes, they have a rather bitter taste.

I don't know what ass end of what animal they came from.  May a variant of the giant Tasmanian rat which has been known to thrive in the District of Criminals?

Anyone else all of a sudden start having their ESET or other virus program start flagging BFG?  Was alwasy good, never had a problem before (but cgminer would get picked up).  Now here within the last week or so ESET is flagging BFG.

IMO, "antivirus" software that takes the easy way out by flagging commonly abused software as more than merely a warning, is itself malware.
They should be looking for the virus/trojan itself, not the common software they use.

Sadly i found many other private clients from being infected by a bfgminer/cgminer/minerd instance
Hidden in a self starting proces called adobe, so it looks some botnet builders are using the miner to run them illegal

These unknowing customers have no clue that its not normal that their gpu is blazing like mad so they complain and ofcourse some specialist find that its caused by the secretly installed miners.

If this is done by people they know or by botnet owners or usage of illegal software i do not know.
Ofcourse some of them report their findings to the av companies, and to be honest even though its annoying they are right

But fact is that this causes all anti virus makers to flag the miners as nasty software.
They aren't right. BFGMiner is not malware. The botnet is.
Flag that, not the legit software it's abusing.
There is a thing named adobe autodownloaded in the malware packages in "bfgminer dot org", that would likely be this item.

This pricing is getting ridiculous.  I just squeezed in on #18 for 0.55, and now they're down to 0.35.  If I had just waited a few days I would have been able to get two instead of one with the paltry few bitcoins I have.  So do I wait a week and order at 0.35BTC, or two weeks when they'll be 0.25BTC?  I've been on the wrong side of just about every price break.  As probably have most other people considering how much the price changes.

OK, complaining done.  Now off to see how quickly I can get 0.35BTC together. Cheesy
Value equation is getting more predictable with these changes.

Reverse order? Seriously?.....

Seriously...wouldn't it make sense to start with group buy #1 and work towards the most recent orders?  Especially since they were willing to be the first to take the risk of buying from you.

Disclaimer:  I bought in group buy #1   Wink
Actually, no.

The older buys had far better difficulty levels, the newer ones have the same difficulty as new buys at the same difficulty level.

14630  Other / Politics & Society / Re: Stasi police state shuts down Lavabit on: August 10, 2013, 07:25:19 PM
Lavabit went Galt.
Which means they are still here.

My medium term prediction.  Any and all attempts to centralize the Internet are a bastardization of the original design protocol, and will fail as alternative paths and methods naturally arise.  Email is a slightly different problem as the protocols are actually obselete.  NSA etc interference will accelerate deployment and utilization of modern alternatives.

Should be fun to watch.

http://www.newscientist.com/article/mg21929294.500-meshnet-activists-rebuilding-the-internet-from-scratch.html#.UgRMsbyhA9c

Dan Ryan is one of the leaders of the Seattle Meshnet project, where sparse coverage already exists thanks to radio links set up by fellow hackers. Those links mean that instead of communicating through commercial internet connections, meshnetters can talk to each other through a channel that they themselves control.

Each node in the mesh, consisting of a radio transceiver and a computer, relays messages from other parts of the network. If the data can't be passed by one route, the meshnet finds an alternative way through to its destination.

no boobies on tv
This is actually the most important point and will lead to the downfall of the system. Smiley

Indeed. No boobs on TV, but people are allowed to have guns = civil war!
You must not be watching the right TV.  Please fix this Very Important Problem and then return to this sick fuck of a conversation.

I agree, but also, I think this is a live, active, major scam.  Here is a bit more.

Yep, I have no problem with your reporting and investigation.  Very helpful I think Smiley.

I'm just stating the obvious in simple terms in case anyone else has the urge to google any program for the purpose of downloading and installing.

Always exercise common sense.
Sam
Understand.  Now I'm going to report this problem to google.  Let's see how long/if they list the site as "Warning! This site could damage your computer".  And of course if they do not, the perps would not be the small time scammer but the THEY.  (Earth shakes slightly, all eyes look to sky for evidence of drones hovering closeby)

DONE!  Here is their auto respond:

Report Sent

Thanks for sending a report to Google. Now that you've done your good deed for the day, feel free to:

1. Take a second to rejoice merrily for doing your part in making the web a safer place.

2. Make sure you have upgraded your web browser to the latest version, and that you have applied the latest patches for your operating system.

3. Learn more about malware that can infect your computer on Stopbadware.org.

LOL...I am so warm and fuzzy feelings inside that Google is our happy friend and not a dark minion of the creepy and spreading evil forces.

Always download mining software directly from the Authors provided site.

That principal should be followed for ANY software you download from the internet these days.

Sad state of affairs indeed.
Sam

I agree, but also, I think this is a live, active, major scam.  Here is a bit more.

AGAIN, REPEATING:  I AM USING A VIRTUAL MACHINE.  DO NOT DO THIS ON YOUR PHYSICAL BOX UNLESS YOU KNOW WHAT YOU ARE DOING.  YOU WILL BE DOWNLOADING VIRUS AND MALWARE.

The first request to the user after he clicks on "32 bit" is for him to download "opendownloadmanager".  Now a lot of people would probably do that, thinking that the download manager is needed because of the program size or something.  What happens is a file from that website entitled "Setup.exe" is downloaded.

Now what is downloaded if one goes to opendown load manager . com (I am destroying the link because it is UNSAFE) and click to download?

Setup_ODM.exe

A different program....

Yes, my friends.   They have a SPECIAL PROGRAM VERSION, Setup.exe for you dedicated, hard working bfgminers.

Maybe a VERY special program....
14634  Bitcoin / Mining software (miners) / Re: Bfgminer.org - Malicious virus website on: August 10, 2013, 04:06:43 PM
At the bottom of the page...

This site is not affiliated with BFGMiner and is not the official page of the software.
The more I thought about it, the more this site troubles me.  So I have dug into what it does on a virtual machine.

DO NOT LOAD THIS SITE!

Again, I am using a virtual machine and am going to keep it quaranteened.

Here is the html that provides the lead in for the naive user click - on the "Windows 32 bit", which appears to provide a download of the bfgminer software.  NOTE I HAVE INTERJECTED SPACES TO PREVENT ANY ACCIDENTAL CLICKING:

<a href="http : //7802cb7d . tinylinks.co"><strong>Windows 32 bit</strong></a>........

another similar link follows for the 64 bit windows.

This leads to a page with a linkbucks reference and an attempt to download "opendownloadmanager", then an auto download of what appears to be the 3.14 program file for bfgminer from luke.dashjr.org/programs/bitcoin/files.  That's a hidden directory, might be some issues there.

Following this ad.yieldmanager is installed - this is notorious stuff that continually pops up adds on your desktop even after you close the browser.

At some point 'sweetpacks' is installed, another well known browser and search engine hijacker.

HERE IS THE PROBLEM:

Anyone who has downloaded bfgminer from this site and used it has compromised security, and could easily find their bitcoins and/or passwords stolen or reported.

Who are the scammers that own the domain?  They are cloaked.
As bitcoin has been now defined as money, bfgminer.org is, I think, engaged in phishing and a higher level of illegal activity than just the malware and hijacking.

.....
One way or another, I think it is finally safe to assume that it makes no logical sense to trust 'the powers that be' to have any restraint at all in terms of their means and methods of imposing control on the masses.  Nor is it wise believe anything they might say since it is abundantly clear that they will flat-out lie about any operations or plans.  Thus if the masses desire or need a solution, it is only logical to work on one which is theoretically sound against any and all attacks.  This stands for both a currency solution and a communications solution.

Do not discount the possibilty that the systems which have shut down - lavabit, silent circle, and the hosting service - may be ops ran by agencies as honeypots.

Then they would have shut them down as damage control, to pre opt Snowden's revealing them for what they really were.

14636  Other / Politics & Society / Re: Stasi police state shuts down Lavabit on: August 09, 2013, 10:53:56 PM
If we want the same type of anonymity Bitcoin has peer to peer technology really does seem to be the way to go, but how would you accomplish such a thing with communications and hosting?

By adapting the Bitcoin protocol for such a purpose. Smiley

So a million email addresses and the stored content of a million people bites the dust.

Which means what?

That what they were doing  is unsustainable?

That their business model was flawed?

That they were based in the wrong country?

Is this the end, or the beginning?

i already made a thread about lavabit because i'm a victim  Embarrassed

https://bitcointalk.org/index.php?topic=270258.0

You might write the website owner and ask him if you can get a dump of your files.

No harm in asking.  It was your stuff.

I guess.

https://lavabit.com/contact.html‎ -- 404 not found...not sure how we can contact them... anyone here knows how to get it touch with them?  There's a AMA request on Reddit for Ladar Levison am  looking forward to that...
Yeah, try the domain record.  Unless it's cloaked there should be a contact listed.  Actually and rather curiously, I suspect you have a legal cause of action against them for this behavior of theirs and the harm it caused you.  That their actions in resisting the jack booted storm troopers of the Evil Empire are understandable does not change this.

Also, note that the past records of the website, which would include contact info, are available on the 'wayback machine' through archive.org.

http://web.archive.org/web/*/http://www.lavabit.com

Looking at this, i find "lavabit llc" is the company, so they would have a record in the state of origin.  Looking at the terms of use, here is some wording:

Lavabit does not actively monitor, censor or restrict its users. Lavabit does not claim any responsibility for the actions of its users. However, if presented with evidence that a particular user has violated this Abuse Policy, we will take appropriate action, including but not limited to:

    Locking the user’s account.
Referring the submitter of the evidence to the FBI’s Internet Crime Complaint Center.
Surrendering any applicable records to authorities if presented with a properly formed court order.

Therefore I would assume that whatever the authorities wanted from Lavabit did not involve a "Properly formed court order", in the opinion of the site owner.

Also interesting, Lavabit said they had 350,000 users.  All vanished just like that?  All their records and emails?  That's a house to house search of a pretty fair sized city.  Why is it I don't expect any mention of this in the mainstream media?

Okay, so here is one more factoid.  Here is the "Lavabit defense fund page."

And you know what?  I'd like to contribute.  With bitcoins.  Not with Paypal.  Because I know THEY are watching....

And Tormail taken down too:
http://www.wired.com/threatlevel/2013/08/freedom-hosting/
This is becoming crazy.

So the government went after a hosting service that hosts child porn? Oh no!

LOL, thats all i got to say.

Quote
Freedom Hosting has long been notorious for allowing child porn to live on its servers. In 2011, the hactivist collective Anonymous singled out Freedom Hosting for denial-of-service attacks after allegedly finding the firm hosted 95 percent of the child porn hidden services on the Tor network

That's from the article you posted.

Think it out.  What does this actually mean?  That Tor actually is effective in hiding the identity of the surfers?  Seems like otherwise, they would have wanted the site left open as a honeypot.

There's a story here, and it's not just a shrug and a laugh and....

So the government went after a hosting service that hosts child porn? Oh no!

14639  Other / Off-topic / Re: Lavabit closes down on: August 09, 2013, 11:42:37 AM
Does anybody know a good alternative for Lavabit?

I'd like a free (or cheap Bitcoin-paid  Cool ) e-mail service which is
* reliable (running for at least a couple of years with very little downtime)
* has reasonable support
* is dedicated to privacy
* has no ties to the United States
* is preferably operated by people who are part of geek / free software / crypto culture
* has preferably only a low level of advertisement annoyance

You can use Chinese/Russian email services. Like qqmail and mail.ru

Any centralized site can be the victim of attacks and shutdowns.
