if you fail to backup your wallet with the official client, you might lose some coins when your PC crashes. but I guess the client warns you when its pool of addresses gets deprecated.
If it only were that simple... The pool is always being repopulated, no problem there. Nothing for the client to warn about. The problem arises when one has to rely on a very old wallet backup missing some of the recently-generated keys. exactly. but I was under the impression that the client warns you when the pool gets repopulated. if it doesn't, how do you know when you need to back up?

I should probabaly note im in UK and want to keep my BTC I do not intend to change back to fiat.
all shopping carts allow you to do that. the choice should depend on the size of your business, and on whether you can live with a shopping cart that accepts only bitcoins or not. if you are a small shop with a small amount of listed products, and you do not need to propose other forms of payments than Bitcoin, then bitcoinevolution is good for you. if you have a large inventory, and if you want to propose Bitcoin among other payment options, then you might want to go for bitpay, or another cart that can be integrated with existing software.

ThomasV, How do I use a deterministic wallet? Also, what will happen if I fail to backup every 100 transactions? (when my PC crash)
here are the deterministic wallets I know of: - Electrum (lightweight client written by me) https://bitcointalk.org/index.php?topic=50936 - Armory (full client) - Bitcoinspinner (lightweight client for mobile phones) if you fail to backup your wallet with the official client, you might lose some coins when your PC crashes. but I guess the client warns you when its pool of addresses gets deprecated.

if you use a deterministic wallet, you can back it up once and for all. if you use the official client, then you need to back it up every 100 transactions

The Electrum server at ecdsa.org has had an outage last night, because its bitcoin daemon died; As a result, some users might have experienced problems, because the database was not updated for several hours. I restarted it this morning, and the database is now up to date.
Sorry about the inconvenience. In the future I will implement a detection of this kind of situation; the Electrum client should switch to a different server when its default server is not up to date.

I am looking at longevity....so a 'middle-man' is completely out of the question.
I don't want to put the fate of my business in the hands of a 3rd party payment processor. When (IF) I fail, I want it to be due to my own stupidity and not that of a payment processor suddenly dissapearing on me..... Know what I mean ?
I want to be 100% self sufficient.
I understand. what I find appealing with their solution is that there is no middle-man for your coins; they do not have access to your wallet, they only manage a set of addresses. but you are right: they are a middle man in the sense that they process the order database.

I looked at existing shopping carts in more detail. there is one in the list that is really simple, because it requires no PHP/SQL coding at all: http://bitcoinevolution.comIt's really worth having a look. it does have limitations, but I think that these limitations could be fixed easily with a better API. I tried to reach the developer.

You'r at least 99?
Perhaps I should have been more clear. That is a combined years experience. 178 people with .5 years experience. That is a lot of experience though. indeed, I can recognize the hand of a 6 month old in your chart.

@phelix - there is already protocol handler support for bitcoin URIs in MultiBit and Electrum. IIRC there is a Satoshi client branch with it working too that the devs are testing and (presumably if they are happy with it) it is targeted for v0.6.
I think we should try to have bitcoin URIs supported on the forum; it is the best way to spread their usage. http://ecdsa.org/bitcoin_URIs.html

block numbers are obviously easier to implement, but real time is possible too. something like "Please pay within the next hour" is more user friendly that "please pay within the next six blocks". obviously.

did you look at existing projects? there's a bunch of them on the wiki: https://en.bitcoin.it/wiki/Category:Shopping_Cart_Interfacesif I had to design such an application, it would be based on a deterministic wallet (eg http://ecdsa.org/electrum) "type 2" wallet means that the website can generate new addresses without knowing the private keys ; this is perfect for a hosted/ SaaS application, where merchants can keep their private keys offline
|
|
|
It would also help merchants manage their exposure to exchange rate fluctuations.
indeed.

Recently I proposed to add digital signatures to bitcoin: URIs, in order to proof the identity of the payee (see http://ecdsa.org/bitcoin_URIs.html). Here is another feature I would like to see added to bitcoin: URIs: expiration dates. Here is an example: I recently bought a gift order at spendbitcoins.com. The merchant webpage displayed a bitcoin address and asked me to initiate payment within 15 minutes. I guess the 'within 15 minutes' constraint is in order to allow the merchant to delete the token if the customer does not send the money. I think this type of constraint should make it into bitcoin: URI specs. Example: bitcoin:19mP9FKrXqL46Si58pHdhGKow88SUPy1V8?amount=1&label=hello&expiration=123456
The expiration date could be a block number or a date. the expected behaviour is that a Bitcoin client should not send the coins if the URI is expired.

wtf? one more intermediary to trust for not holding the private key?

I hope I am wrong, but...
There are auction sites on the internet that sell crap stuff that nobody ever wants and they are just a front for money laundering. If anyone ever inquires then they claim to be a legit business. The fact that this site is able to offer such a wide variety of goods (which probably don't exist) for such huge prices screams at me that this is a crook job.
This doesn't bode well for bitcoin.
the owner of bitcoindeals.com is not anonymous: http://onlyonetv.com/2011/08/the-bitcoin-show-episode-037/I never used the site; I will try it when they ship to Europe

is this a bug ? when I search on the website, products are listed with lower prices than the actual price they have when I click on them.
