1662  Bitcoin / Bitcoin Discussion / Re: Bitcoin Without ETF on: August 12, 2018, 04:01:50 AM
Bitcoin ETF does not appeal to me.

Bitcoin ETF is currently in news as SEC recently rejected Winklevoss twin Bitcoin ETF and  fate of 9 others ETF will be decided in next 2 month .

Whatever the SEC decide on it in future will be interesting to follow.  It will be worth nothing that Bitcoin ETF will be treating Bitcoin as an asset not as a currency. As per fundamental of ETF , Bitcoin ETF will simply means that Bitcoin will be locked as an asset and ETF will be traded in exchange.

Why Bitcoin ETF should not make appeal to the Bitcoin community.

1. Treating currency as an asset to trade in exchange.
2. For ETF, Bitcoin need to kept  secured, means ETF will remove that amount of Bitcoin to be available for active transaction.
3. Bitcoin can be easily purchased and sold so it is not that Bitcoin ETF is making bitcoin more available to masses.
4. ETF do not gurantee that it will solve the Bitcoin price volatility problem.
5. ETF might give rise to "HODL" mentality that is not good for Bitcoin. (I will explain it sometime later.)

ETF will help Institutional Investors or other organization to invest in Bitcoin but Bitcoin is meant for P2P transaction and Satoshi did not created it to be used as Investment product.

1663  Alternate cryptocurrencies / Altcoin Discussion / How to invest in Crypto currencies without fiat. on: August 12, 2018, 03:34:15 AM
Sometimes people want to invest in crypto currencies but they are little skeptical about it and do not want put their funds in cryto currencies with all the FUD surrounding us.There is also possiblity that you want to invest but you are running low in funds for investment.

So here are some of my suggestion to earn some crypto currency.

1. Freelance parttime work.
You can take some small assignment that pays in crypto currency to earn some currencies. You can check with your skill set in Services section in this forum or in reddit(r/Jobs4Bitcoins).
You can post your own advertisement for hire that you think is not listed in these sites.
It is sad that XBTFreelancer has stopped new signup.

2. If you own business.
You can start accepting the payment for your articles in Crypto currency. Benefit of accepting the crypto currency is that you will earn the crypto currency as well new customer base who re also looking for business establishment that accepts Crypto.

3. Bounties and Airdrop.
If you are not able to fit in any of the above ctegories then you can try Bounties and airdrop. But accept bounties that pay some established crypto currencies.

4. Faucet and PTC sites.
A big no for them but still you want to try faucets then I can say to try coinpot.co faucets. Most of the faucets uses coinhive scripts that just drain your system resources and might introduce you to the virus also.

5. Try to sell your stuff for crypto currency.
You can sell your stuff in Goods board for crypto currency in this forum. Now Craiglist also give option to sell your stuff in crypto currency.

6.
Another way to get cryptocurrency is accepting advertisement services payable via crypto on your sites. You can Google it to find them, some of them are Bitmedia (https://bitmedia.io/), Coinzilla (https://coinzilla.io/) and so on. I never try them by myself though, so please do your own research.

Please feel free to add, if you have some more ideas of getting crypto currency without fiat.
1664  Other / Serious discussion / Re: Bitcoin ETF, Is it really needed? on: August 11, 2018, 09:49:21 PM
ETF will help Institutional Investors or other organization to invest in Bitcoin but Bitcoin is meant for P2P transaction and Satoshi did not created it to be used as Investment product.
You've already answered the question. I believe the text in the bold on the quote makes others really excited for the ETF since it will mean more profit to come and is the reason why ETF's have an appeal to the bitcoin community as a whole. Just the thought of speculating how much money institutional investors and other organization will put on it is very appealing, and the thought of price skyrocketing because of it is very enticing.

This look to me very short term goal, as it will cause change of status from currency to an asset that is not at all desired.
It remind me a old story of The Goose That Laid the Golden Egg.
1665  Other / Meta / Re: Sorting System on: August 11, 2018, 02:07:31 PM
I was wondering if it was possible to have a sorting system on this forum to help newbies get important information and answers from experienced forum members.
There are many low quality posts on the forum. To get a satisfactory answer, one has to scroll until one gets tired. So I thought, "Can we have a 'sort by' button at the top of every board and thread so that newbies and everyone would get posts from say Legendary, Hero and other ranks"?

Are you done with the pinned topics of the forum. Actually 90 percent of newbie queries are redundant and already explained there. You need to understand the forum first (Different boards and sub boards)before putting up your queries. Asking a "Mining specific question" in "Beginner s and Help Board" will not be a good choice.

Sorting will not be helpful as it can break the logical flow of discussion. Rank does not guarantee a high quality post. Do not read beyond third page of topics if reading make you tired  because it is very rare that you will got something new after third page. Avoid reading megathreads and speculative topics.
1666  Other / Beginners & Help / Re: How anonymous and secure is the blockchain technology? on: August 11, 2018, 10:26:13 AM
The crypto world is run via blockchain technology, but how can we be sure of its anonymity? How anonymous it is really? With hackers all around, do you think that maybe it is not so anonymous and secured after all?

Block chain is a distributed ledger and it is very secure. To hack or alter the account of block chain a 51% attack is needed, that is a very costly affair.
Everything in block chain is in form of IDs or numbers, so it is fully anonymous. But being anonymous does not mean that it is not trackable, For a wallet, each and every transaction can be tracked, so make sure to keep your identity secure.
1667  Economy / Lending / Re: I need to loan 10$ in bitcoins to my blockchain wallet on: August 11, 2018, 02:56:14 AM
Hello,

I need to loan 10$ in bitcoins to my blockchain wallet... any help where I can get the loan.
My wallet is empty and i need them for today.

Thank you all!

Hello,

1. Posting in wrong section, the appropriate one will be : Lending
2. Brand New account asking for loan is not a good idea, you gonna get tagged for no time.
3. Even if we say that it's ok for newbie to ask for a loan, you have no collateral even for such small amounts.

I can make this list longer, but for now this should be enough.

+1

OP, What you are asking is not a loan.(without collateral and without repayment plan ) but it is direct begging.
Begging is prohibited in this forum.
1668  Other / Meta / Re: Suggestions to lessen spam accounts on: August 10, 2018, 08:05:48 PM
@OP.

If all of your recommendation is taken in effect then  I think we are going to see the account trade of newbie then.

As there are always few people who visit this forum to ask a question when they are not able to find the solution themselves or outside of this forum. They create an account, ask there questions, get there solution and leave the forum.

What about these people?

I think  they are now interested in whining about it but do not want to earn it.
Few days back I give a challenge to answer 5 question in a span of 2 weeks and earn 2 Merits . Out of 5 user that I selected for challenge ,4 user never came back for that 5 question challenge and I found one of them  expressing the utter disappointment in Merit system and claiming that nobody gives Merit.

No need to create a thread in Meta, you can report them in below thread.

I will say to you do not let Merit abuse to disturb your sleep but instead focus on reading and learning as your long term goal.

Edit: Adding below the views of  Andreas Antonopoulos

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=KSv0J4bfBCc&feature=push-u&attr_tag=GUmiDnU0TxDaahFh%3A6&ab_channel=aantonop

The main points from his video

1.When you own Bitcoin you own keys. You are in control of your Bitcoin. By ETF , you will not have any keys so you are not in control of your Bitcoin.

2.ETF owner/Custodian  will be a single holder of the Bitcoin. ETF holding so large amount of Bitcoin can easily manipulate the market.

3.If any debate going to happen in bitcoin (like Bitcoin cash ) in future then ETF custodian will have the voice but not the actual share holders.

4.Bitcoin ETF is a terrible idea but it might happen in future.

and overthrow those greedy government fee charging banks!!!

https://www.zdnet.com/article/square-has-made-37-million-supporting-bitcoin-trading/

Bitcoin is currency and how can you get the currency for free? You need to do some efforts for earning the currency.
Everyone is free to earn the currency (bitcoin) but not entitled to get it free.

They are providing service so they will earn from it or do you want to say anybody provide services in "Bitcoin" should not earn anything?
If you thinks so ,then you are wrong because Bitcoin are generated as an incentive (earning) to the miner.
1673  Bitcoin / Development & Technical Discussion / Re: Bitcoin Block time on: August 10, 2018, 03:21:31 AM

The network behaves as it was initially designed. Every 2016 blocks there is a retarget, the difficulty gets adjusted upwards or downwards so the AVERAGE time between two blocks is ~10 minutes.
You are correct tough, if the networks hashrate would drop to 50% in the first 10 minutes after a retarget, it would take about 4 weeks untill the next retarget, at which point the time between two blocks would once again be ~10 minutes. This is still "working as designed" tough, theoretically, there is no problem... Sure, blocks would probably be completely full for the next 4 weeks, a fee war could start, it would take a longer time to get a confirmation,.... But everything would sort itself out, without technical problems.

The fact that at this moment, the time between the last 6 blocks was ~20 minutes (i didn't verify this): no problem, it's completely possible... That's why the difficulty is adjusted so the AVERAGE time between two blocks is ~10minutes, and that's also why we don't retarget every 10 or 20 blocks (if we would retarget to often, the difficulty would jump up and down quite a bit, since the number of samples would be to low).

Solving a block requires the miners to increment a nonce in the block header, then create a sha256d hash of this new header and check if the result in under the current target. It's possible that after a miner receives a new block and start working on the next block, he finds a header whose sha256d hash is under the target in less than a second, it's also possible he'll never find a valid block...

Thanks for clearing the misconception of 2 weeks. so it is exactly 2016 block (14 days *24 hours * 6 block in an hour).

@OP.
Few days back I checked the hash rate graph and I found that difficulty always  increased with each passing month and it never dipped so I do not think that we ever encountered any such situation where re target might happened after more than 2 weeks.
1674  Other / Meta / Re: Hidden boards as a reward for high merited users and reporters on: August 10, 2018, 02:38:13 AM
My vote is "No" (I do not believe Merit ruin lives but here are my reasons).

Forum already have so much spam and if we remove these good poster also and divert them to a hidden board,  then what will be left for us ?
These good post made us think and I believe they should be available to everybody.

I suggest to create a open board (same like Ivory Tower or Serious Discussion ) but only those user will be able to create and quote there who has earned more than 50 merits and at least got merited by 10+ user. (10+ user is also important as some  ANN topics got 50 merits by a single and I do not think  that ANN topic author should be eligible.)

This board will serve us with some good reading and spare everyone to weed out spam.
1675  Other / Meta / Re: Russian moderators prejudgment. Plagiarism and duplicate posting. on: August 10, 2018, 02:19:14 AM
What is up with the Russian forum and xandry, why is everyone hating him?

Seeing who's doing the hating it would seem that xandry is doing a decent job hitting the spammers where it hurts.

No, so much allegation means it need to be investigated.
When did the parameter of hatred become the symbol of job is done correctly?

What a irony some forum members are fighting for moderator for their local boards and these guys are fighting against their moderators.

PS: I am not Russian but may be be Theymos need to settle it out because community fighting is not a good thing.

A serious typo for a selling service.  PRIZE vs PRICE.
1677  Bitcoin / Development & Technical Discussion / Re: How the network remain Decentralized when block rewards diminishes or too low? on: August 08, 2018, 09:18:08 AM
I do not think electricity cost will go down, on a contrary it is expected to rise to make mining more costly.

Why do you assume that the cost of electricity is going to increase? Many power plants have to deal with an excess electricity which cannot be stored in the batteries - that's why electricity is cheaper at night. Also, renewable energy might become more efficient in the near future - there are already mining farms which use it and it's reasonable.

I do not know what is is your assumption here. Almost all developing nation has electricity/power crisis. For renewable energy, even developed nation like USA have demand and supply gap.
https://www.renewableenergymagazine.com/interviews/american-renewable-electricity-the-gap-between-demand-20180116

...
I am literally still feared of this alleged 51% attack. Bitmain is already in control of around 40-45% of total hashing rate. If in future bitmain reaches the 51%, it has a high possibility of creating a dreaded chaos in the whole crypto universe which may range from double spending to mining and acceptance of blocks.
...

Bitmain could already control more than 51 % of the hashrate right now, because you donīt really
know who really runs the miners and the mining pools as an outsider. E.g. they could
simply let a part of their miners mine for another pool in order to disguise the total
extent of their control of the BTC hashrate.

Nonetheless, your worries are cleary unfounded. Even if they do indeed control that much of the hashrate
they are heavily incentivized to play by the rules of the Bitcoin network. No other company has an
comparable amount of money invested in this sector and they would jeopardize all of their investment
if they would damage the trust in Bitcoin and other cryptocurrencies. They have literally been printing money
for a few years and the gametheoretical incentives ensure that they will not participate in the potential
attacks that you mention.

Agreed to some extent, but if  government tries to exercise control on them and incentivized  them to attack Bitcoin?
Actulally attck in bitcoin will cause whole crytocurrency to collapse.

But anyway my concern is that if network is sustainable on transaction fees or not?

This challenge comes to end now.
It is disappointing for me that people did not showed interest.

@Jallu74
I think you are well versed with forum rules and its board. I guess you need to explain little more while posting.

Best of luck to all.
1679  Other / Off-topic / Re: Let me give you the first Merit in this forum. (Challenge ques 4 and 5) on: August 08, 2018, 08:08:08 AM
Challenge Ques 4.

The forum has a special sub-section
Bitcoin Forum > Economy > Trading Discussion > Scam Acquisitions (Moderator: Cyrus)
In the case of scam detection:
- I create a theme in this subsection using the template specified https://bitcointalk.org/index.php?topic=260073.0
At the same time, I'll make sure that there is no such topic yet. If there is, I leave your comment in it.
- I leave negative feedback, by clicking on " trust", as indicated https://bitcointalk.org/index.php?topic=253655.0
+1

Challenge Ques 5.

- If you invest, making transactions on this forum, you should carefully study this topic https://bitcointalk.org/index.php?topic=137288.0
- also in the case of people investing is useful to view the entire section "Scam Accusations", as there are many examples of Scam
- If you invest in ICO, you need to carefully study the project:
- their website, "white paper",
- the media space, looking at how the advertising company is going, on the ANN project page on the forum often ask tricky questions about the project;
- study the team,
- To evaluate the project's goal and its prospects.
- The view which contacts with which organizations the ICO team has already established.
- How is the implementation of plans?
- If you have already purchased a crypto traded on the exchange, do not forget to put a "stop loss" or get ready to wait for your crypto to grow in price again. Here, of course, everyone to decide what trading strategy to choose.

I think you are bit carried towards ICO . I am looking something in general that have more broader approach.

1680  Other / Meta / Re: At what point should we report a megathread for closure? on: August 08, 2018, 06:31:27 AM
I've just started an experiment. Created a self-moderated thread in the Bitcoin Discussion, and said that I will delete the post that are only sig. spam.

No one has replied yet for over a 3 hours now, as expected, and only 4 views /two are mine/ Cheesy

https://bitcointalk.org/index.php?topic=4838689.msg43653513#msg43653513

This has nothing to do with your warning of deleting post in "Self moderated thread" as you already said it yourself it has 4 views in 3 hours, so most of people did not even bothered to click that link.

The board "Bitcoin Discussion" is now become purely speculative one or some kind of News room.  If you really need the discussion on your thread "[Discussion]How to decentralize the price of the bitcoin? Self-moderated." or some bitcoin related topic then you should use  "Bitcoin Forum > Bitcoin > Development & Technical Discussion  " Board.

I am telling you from my own experience (that thread is not even self moderated ) but still did not get any views/replies while other threads created afterwards got in excess of 10+ replies and I need to move thread to Development and Technical discussion Board.

@OP.  I suggest to autolock the thread if there is no activity by OP in that thread for period of 7 days. Unlocking of thread (that are autolocked) can be done by Mods on case by case basis if required/requested by members or by OP.
