1681  Bitcoin / Bitcoin Discussion / Re: How many bitcoins you are holding *NO TROLLING on: November 10, 2013, 12:07:48 AM
1870.  I had over 2300 from mining and from my shops but I sold about 500 to buy a car.  Its turning out to be the most expensive car I am ever likely to own.   Cry
Dont worry, with 1870 you're still going to be fkng filthy rich.
1682  Bitcoin / Bitcoin Discussion / Re: one good thing about missing the bitcoin riches boat on: November 10, 2013, 12:03:43 AM
I've seen a few things about goldcoin, but what makes it worthy?

Nothing
LOL!!
1683  Economy / Speculation / Re: Bubble or Stabilization? on: November 10, 2013, 12:01:28 AM
probably stick around these prices til Monday when markets open.  expecting price to rise for atleast the next few weeks.
This one is correct ^^^^^
1684  Economy / Speculation / Re: how many BTC is enough? on: November 09, 2013, 11:55:05 PM
Agreed.

The gold standard for how much you should buy?

"As much as you possibly can"

and

"As much as you're willing to completely lose".

Put those together, primarily the 2nd one, and you'll probably be rich.
1685  Other / Meta / Re: Is forum user "Satoshi".... Mr. Nakamoto himself? on: November 09, 2013, 11:51:20 PM
As the original poster of this thread, I want to say I totally respect Satoshi's desire to bow out when he did.

Adam Levine on Lets Talk Bitcoin (podcast) aptly pointed out the other day that he believes the decision was made, at least in part, because some very powerful organisations, people, and international structures may be utterly abolished by Bitcoin.  It quite simply would not be a desireable thing to be the name and the face they all point to when it happens.

I get it.

Not sure he was thinking that far ahead when he made it.  There's no telling if he "knew" what would come of Bitcion, or if he's sitting there utterly amazed himself right now.  But you'd have to be a fool to realize what this technology is capable of doing, and plaster your face all over it.

More importantly, Bitcoin is, by its very definition, decentralization.  There shouldn't be a single point of origin for it.  Its everyone's.  We all own it.  We are all creating its success.  That much I am sure Satoshi thought about when he exploded into pixie dust.  Smiley

In any case, I hope this thread isn't viewed as an irritating "drawer of attention" to sniffing him out.  I was just excited to read his posts and analyze his thinking processes in various discussions.

Thanks all.

Can you define conviction in this context?

1687  Economy / Speculation / Re: Great New Crash on: November 08, 2013, 09:52:17 PM
What does it mean when there is almost no "Volume" like that?  Yet the price goes way up?

UPDATE:  does it matter if there's a combined chart?   The price is also just gox.... so the volume is just gox ...
1688  Bitcoin / Bitcoin Discussion / Re: Security Experts? Another Paper Wallet Ques on: November 08, 2013, 05:40:37 PM
You could try this.
Put all the coins you are saving for the long run into a wallet and get it offline. Burn it to discs or USB drives and protect it like you would jewels. I recommend a safe deposit box, but any high security should do.

If I were going to use windows, I would not keep any coins (private key) on my machine.

THis was my method.  For 5 months.   Then when the new version of QT came out, every time I would move or rename the wallet.dat file, it would "corrupt" on me .... the *only* reason i didn't lose *everything* was bedcause I still had a "recycle bin" with old wallet.dat file versions ...

I also had encryption keys that were changing on me randomly.   Thankfully they were capital versus lower case character changes.  I have *no* idea how those happened because I was copying and pasting my encryption keys in to the box when I would encrypt.   But needless to say, once I started seeing corruption notices just from moving the wallet.dat files to USB drives, and my encryption keys were showing up as "invalid", I was done with QT.   Done.   There's no way im trusting XXXXXXXXX dollars to a software program on windows.
1689  Economy / Speculation / Re: Bitcoin Reaches New Heights on: November 08, 2013, 05:36:22 PM
I just looked at coinbase and bitcoin was trading over there at $325 and doesn't show any signs of slowing down currently.

No signs?

It's getting ready to crash! Grab your dog and your ammo and head for the hills!! Smiley

Sucks when you're wrong huh Sad   Went up to $352 after you posted this Smiley
1690  Economy / Speculation / Re: Why aren't I filthy rich yet? It's been like two months. on: November 08, 2013, 05:32:16 PM
Heh, reading just the title, I was sure this was a humorous posting making fun of the speculation forum.

It seems op was serious Smiley

Ha, yeah I was serious (mostly). The problem is I go back and forth. Bitcoin really DOES seem like it has the potential to be revolutionary and MASSIVELY successful. And I sometimes think I'm a genius for understanding its implications earlier than most.  But then I remember that I'm not that smart. And I haven't exactly won over the friends and family I've tried to convert. ("Dude, you've got to drop the bitcoin sh*t. Seriously, I don't care.") And then I wonder if I'm not just a moron who spent several grand on "Mario money" (my wife's preferred term) that will soon be worthless.   I guess we'll find out.  Smiley
You and everyone else here.  Dealing with that.  You need to understand - the vast majority of the population (90%) do nothing but live day to day.  They're happy with their 9-5 jobs, their cubicles, and they're content to just "exist".  They don't explore, inquire, or think outside the box at all.  It could be lack of intelligence or laziness.  I prefer to think its an intelligence thing.  But nobody cares because they don't care about most things.  The majority of humanity are sheep, lead by the herd.  Even mister Jesus Christ said this about us, accurately.  you're not a moron, and you're not crazy.   If you have an IQ worth noting, and you've evaluated the situation fully, then you're right, and they're wrong.  Its difficult biting my tongue, and it will be difficult not shoving it in their faces later.  That's the true challenge Smiley
1691  Bitcoin / Bitcoin Discussion / Security Experts? Another Paper Wallet Ques on: November 08, 2013, 05:21:59 PM
I am not comfortable with Armory or Ubuntu or Linux.  I am a normal windows user who knows most basic computer stuff.  But i am a newbie for sure.

I am trying to get my head around this private key thing and I can't.  Some people use bitaddress.org, even downloading the software, unzipping, offline, generating paper wallet.  But someone aptly pointed out that any third party is a risk.

So how do you make your own private key that doesn't involve a third party?   I am really frustrated because a lot of money is at stake here.  I don't like feeling like one day I could wake up and "X" website has run off with all the coins because fools used "X" website to generate private keys.  If bitaddress is a potential risk, as some say (Probably just out of paranoia but still..) then how does one make a secure paper wallet?  You always need a third party don't you?  This is so confusing and frustrating .....
1692  Economy / Service Discussion / Re: Would like to thank MtGox for making us rich on: November 08, 2013, 04:55:33 PM
You should thank China for the current exchange rates, not MtGox. Wink

And....

* The infrastructure going up all over the world right now supporting this technology.
* The tens of thousands of business now accepting Bitcoin as a payment option.
* The international conferences dedicated to building a decentralized peer to peer banking system for the first time in human history.
* The undoing of the central banking system.
* The greed and absurd fees of Visa and Mastercard.
* The failure of the US Congress to get its sh*t together.
* The subsequent raising of the debt ceiling.
* The ability to transfer money anywhere in the world instantly, free of charge.  And (wait for it...)
* The ultimate goal to bring free bank accounts held on the most basic smartphones, to 6 billion human beings who can't currently hold or transact money, in the farest reaches of Africa and beyond.

Bitcoins' value is much, much, much more than the buying and selling happening on the markets.  And people are finally starting to realize that.

You're rich, because you had the foresight to see all of this before everyone else.
1693  Economy / Economics / Re: MtGox 6500 bitcoins for sale for GBP on: November 08, 2013, 03:34:15 AM
Doesnt it concern us that these are probably fake sells to manipulate price?

How do we know someone hasn't been doing this repeatedly to get the price up to where it is now and it will all come tumbling down when they finish?
1694  Economy / Economics / Re: What are you doing with your bitcoins ? on: November 08, 2013, 03:31:27 AM
Yeah you kind of left out the most common / obvious option:

Saving until price hits astronomical highs, then cashing out.

Closest you got was "Holding until die then give to loved ones"

Pretty sure most of us aren't planning to hold them till we die.

1695  Economy / Speculation / Re: When Will India Explode? on: November 08, 2013, 03:29:31 AM
My whole point to him was:  "How does the bank know what you are doing anyways?  All they see are cash in cash out.  Sure, its to a bitcoin exchange, but that doesn't implicate what you are being paid for, specifically at all"
1696  Economy / Speculation / Re: When Will India Explode? on: November 08, 2013, 03:07:05 AM
With the Chinese driving the bitcoin market at breakneck speeds now, I'm kind of wondering when India will "jump on board".

Does anyone know much about the Indian market and have any thoughts on what is happening or will happen there?

I work with some companies in India who provide pharmaceuticals around the world.   I have repeatedly requested that they get on board with Bitcoin because I have to wire them monthly, with $40+ in fees.  The responses I have gotten from them have been strange and frustrating.  First they said this to me:

"pls click on the link, i am been trying different banks but as of now bitcoins are not allowed in india.
If there is any positive response i will let you know.
http://articles.economictimes.indiatimes.com/2013-08-14/news/41409715_1_bitcoin-gox-virtual-currency"

I replied to him that there are exchanges he might be able to use which allow it conversion to fiat.  He replied:

"Here in india we are banned from using bitcoins for pharma exports. If we are found using bitcoins we will be banned forever ."

Made it sound like Bitcoin was known, and has already been completely restricted by Indian authorities.  I told him his information must not be correct.  He replied:

"I cant take cash out bitcoin for pharma exports. what will i get by telling a lie to you, i will loose business which i never want to do.
i will check again from a different state."

I asked him to check again (lol) ... he wrote back:

I got a company who deals in bitcoins and it is working in india.
The charges are too high and it will not work out for me. They charge 50$ for a transaction of 7 bitcoins which is equal to 3000$.
Why cant you use western union or money gram instead?"

So either people in India are trying to scam bitcoin users or ... i dont know whats going on there.  Restrictions, excessive fees?  All seems completely backwards to what Bitcoin is all about.
1697  Other / Meta / Re: Is forum user "Satoshi".... Mr. Nakamoto himself? on: November 08, 2013, 02:56:50 AM
Crazy!

He evaporated into thin air Sad

If you guys know him, tell him thank you.
1698  Economy / Speculation / Re: Only Three Scenarios ... on: November 07, 2013, 11:57:40 PM
bitcoin will either go up, down, or stay the same.
So i assume he was just trying to be funny
1699  Economy / Speculation / Re: The Lame Train to Nowheresville on: November 07, 2013, 11:56:14 PM
Why is it so hard for the naysayers to realize that there's a worldwide infrastructure being built around this technology, and that this isn't just a silly stupid pretend "stock market" situation happening?

Adoption and faith in the purpose of this new currency is why the value will stabilize and continue to rise.

Long after the initial rush.
1700  Other / Meta / Unread Posts Since Last Visit - Jumbled Mess on: November 07, 2013, 11:46:07 PM
Then again Im a lay person. Im an avid user of the "View new Posts" link on every forum.  Its how I see all the interesting discussion going on since I last visited. On this site however, the view new posts link is always 75 pages long, and filled with tons of weird auctions and hard to read subject lines that make ease of viewing impossible.  So i pretty much never use it.  Wish I could filter whats there and only see interesting conversations.  Really couldn't care less about auctions... or some dude selling passkeys for MS Word.

For example instead of the page being saturated with this crap:

[240 TH] BitMinter.com [1% PPLNS,Pays TxFees + MergedMining,Stratum,GBT,vardiff]
The Problem With Altcoins
[WTS] 136GH New in Computer hardware
More Gox withdrawal delays
[BitFunder] IceDrill.ASIC IPO (500 Thash Mining Operation powered by HashFast)
Does Anyone Else Believe In Jesus Christ ?
[1100 TH] BTC Guild - Pays TxFees, Stratum, MergedMining, Private Servers
When is it a good idea to change your wallet address?

Forum participation would quadruple if it was only saturated with this:

The Problem With Altcoins
More Gox withdrawal delays
Does Anyone Else Believe In Jesus Christ ?
When is it a good idea to change your wallet address?
