Problem is: how can you prove that the files on his computer were manipulated?

Also another thing is, that IF the agents Force + Bridges planted the manipulated files on Ross' pc, why did they leave all the evidence about their fraud? Doesn't make sense. They would have erased everything about the "murder chats", entries in the (manipulated) journal and the insider information Force was giving to DPR as "frenchmaid" and "alpacino". No way they would've forgotten this!

This all leads to Variety Jones as the main suspect in my opinion: https://bitcointalk.org/index.php?topic=935434.0

He gained a lot of trust from Ross and it was probably easy for him to hack his pc with a 0-day, plant a stealth backdoor with eternal access and do whatever he wants at later time. He could play a multi character game around Ross. He takes over the Silk Road site and at a certain time, when he feels unsafe, he puts Ross back in the spotlight and disappears with a lot of Bitcoins.
He does the same with SR2 and leaves Blake Benthall as the fall guy.

1724  Bitcoin / Bitcoin Discussion / Re: Who is "Variety Jones"? on: April 26, 2015, 10:22:15 PM
When Dratel said in court, that the real DPR would never save his chatlogs or write a detailed journal and "on the internet nothing is as it seems", he already implicated a "manipulated files theory", but Dratel wasn't allowed to use most of the evidence, because of the running San Francisco case against Force and Bridges. Also some of the evidence was only presented short before trial. That all made it hard to build a solid defense I guess.
1725  Bitcoin / Bitcoin Discussion / Re: Who is "Variety Jones"? on: April 26, 2015, 08:59:29 PM
Nice finding. Could lead to the manipulation of the chatlogs then. Only Ross knows if these chats have been taking place or not.
Does anybody know, if the defense can order a forensic image from Ross' computer (incl memory from the arrest time) or even can get an independent institute to open an investigation on the hardisks?

Thanks  Wink

If ANYTHING has been tampered with then ALL evidence coming from Ross's laptop should be disgarded as they are not genuine data anymore.
Nobody knows if they are real or not (tampered with to frame Ross) therefor should be disgarded.

If what I found is real evidence/exhibits shown in the trial then it has been tampered with...

That means - IF ROSS'S ATTORNEY IS WATCHING THIS [1] - he should demand a re-trial in light of new evidence that Ross is innocent and was framed by the FBI, and also demand disgarding all and any data coming from his laptop as evidence as they have been tampered with by the Feds in order to assure his sentence (if that is the right way to put it). - I would call it framing to be honest.

[1] and if Ross's attorney is watching this I demand 90% of your payment coz you failed*  Wink
And I didn't even start reading all the info yet.

*that is of course if my findings are actual trial evidence/exhibits.

I am pretty sure that Dratel will read this topic. Not so sure if he will share his fee with you, though Cheesy

One thing that indicates a strong connection between MtGox and Silkroad / Ross Ulbricht is the fact, that in Ross' journal he is stating that 2 Mio USD were "stolen" at MtGox:

Quote
29/05/2013 - $2M was stolen from my mtgox account by DEA.

Now we know, that at the same time this happened:
http://arstechnica.com/tech-policy/2013/05/feds-reveal-the-search-warrant-that-seized-mt-gox-account/

Quote
DHS officials refused to comment on the ongoing investigation, but they did provide a copy of the warrant that was used yesterday to seize funds that Mt. Gox had in Dwolla, a money transfer service. Dwolla is a Des Moines, Iowa company that provides one of the most popular ways to move US dollars to Mt. Gox, where they can be used to buy bitcoins.

So, why Ross writes about 2 Mio of his money beiing stolen at MtGox at the same day when Marc Karpeles account was seized?
1729  Bitcoin / Bitcoin Discussion / Re: the rise and fall of... on: April 25, 2015, 05:38:34 AM
Wasn't it "Willy the bot" at MtGox that drove the price that high?
1730  Bitcoin / Bitcoin Discussion / Re: OpenBazaar Beta 0.4.0 “Portobello” is released for Linux and OSX on: April 24, 2015, 02:38:33 PM
Anyone to explain what is the notary system in openbazaar and how it works?

From: https://blog.openbazaar.org/what-is-openbazaar/

Quote
How does OpenBazaar work?

Let’s say that you are looking to sell your old laptop. Using the OpenBazaar client (a program you download), you create a new product listing on your computer with details just like you would on any ecommerce site, and ask for a price in Bitcoin. When you publish that listing, it is sent out to the distributed p2p network of other people using OpenBazaar. Anyone who searches for the keywords you’ve used—laptop, electronics, etc—will find your listing. They can then accept your price, or offer up a new price.

If you both agree to a price, the client creates a contract between you both with your digital signatures, and sends it to a third party called a notary. In the case of a dispute an arbiter can be brought into the transaction. These third party notaries and arbiters are also folks on the OpenBazaar network—could be your neighbor or someone across the world—who the buyer and seller trust in case something goes wrong. The third party witnesses the contract and creates a multisignature Bitcoin account (multisig) that requires two of three people to agree before the Bitcoin can be released.

The buyer then sends the agreed upon amount to the multisig address. You get a notification saying the buyer has sent the funds, and you ship the laptop to them and mark that it has been shipped. The buyer receives it a few days later, and they mark it received, which releases the funds from multisig to you. You got your Bitcoin, the buyer got the laptop; no fees paid, no one stopped your trade, everyone’s happy.
What if something goes wrong?

As we all know, things don’t always go smoothly. What if you’re buying a certain book from a seller, you pay the multisig, and they ship you the wrong one, or it was in poorer condition than advertised, or they don’t even send a product at all?

This is where the third party comes in. Remember that a multisig requires two of three people to agree in order to move the Bitcoin. They control the third key to the multisig, so the funds will not move until either the buyer and seller work out an arrangement themselves, or the third party agrees with either the buyer or seller on how to deal with the transaction and funds in multisig.

How can you trust the third party to begin with? For that matter, how can you trust anyone on a network that guards users’ privacy, thus allowing for pseudo-anonymity? OpenBazaar has a reputation and rating system that allows all parties to give feedback on other users. If someone attempts to scam another user, their reputation will suffer, and the same is true with third parties. When you go to purchase a product and select a third party for the transaction, you can see their reputation and ratings to find out if the rest of the community trusts them—or doesn’t. Ensuring that these ratings are legitimate and the reputation system isn’t being gamed is a difficult technical challenge, but you can read about our approach here.

If you are really paranoid, both the buyer and seller can create a voting pool made up of people they both trust.

These steps may sound complicated, but the details are handled by the client itself. Our goal is for buyers and sellers to have an even better experience using OpenBazaar than the old centralized platforms.

I tried on Debian, install didn't work, deleted VM, waiting for a better version ...

I had a lot of "bla bla has no install candidate" errors and I didn't take the time to fix all these. It's still beta anyways.

Well, Ross had not just this journal, where I remember, he wrote it in preparation of a book or something, but he saved a lot of his chats, passwords, id's and more on his laptop. He was clearly not experienced in computer security and might have been an easy victim of VJ or Shaun Bridges penetrating his personal laptop and planting files.

edit1:
The journal starts earlier. The link I posted seems to be just an excerpt, you can find the complete journal in the exhibit list: http://antilop.cc/sr/files/2014_12_10_ULBRICHT_evidence_lists.pdf

Here is the full one:

Well, I'm choosing to write a journal for 2012.  I imagine that some day I may have a story
written about my life, and it would be good to have a detailed account of it

edit3: He already had a megalomanic tendency back then (if he really wrote this journal - which I believe he did - at least until a certain time)

edit4: I would like to see this complete collection for example: http://antilop.cc/sr/exhibits/GX-215.pdf

The journal: http://www.wired.com/2015/01/heres-secret-silk-road-journal-laptop-ross-ulbricht/

Now it looks like Ross really sold the site to VJ who took over his invented DPR moniker and made the interview. At this time the DEA was already close to Ross Ulbricht: They had his name one month later.
I am pretty sure we could find proof for this in the 1400 chat log pages.
The story could lead to Variety Jones taking over SR from Ross until it was closed by the feds and Ross arrested and later he organised the restart as SilkRoad2 as DPR again. He sucked out as much of BTC as he could get and then sold the site to Defcon who has been arrested short time later. Pure coincidence some would say....

Edit: To me it looks like Variety Jones aka Plural of Mongoose aka DreadPirateRoberts (from SR1 AND SR2!) is Thomas Clark. The one who had this dispute about icmag with Gypsy Nirvana (currently arrested in Manila - coincidence?) and as far as I can see it, he is still around.
1736  Bitcoin / Bitcoin Discussion / Re: Who is "Variety Jones"? on: April 21, 2015, 03:30:43 PM
I found something, that didn't really surprise me, but it's still very interesting:

The interview, that was made with "DPR" by Alan Greenberg was not made with Ross Ulbricht, but with Variety Jones:

http://www.forbes.com/sites/andygreenberg/2013/08/14/an-interview-with-a-digital-drug-lord-the-silk-roads-dread-pirate-roberts-qa/

Quote
Q: Can you tell me anything about the original creator of the Silk Road? How did you meet? And did you acquire the Silk Road from him in a financial deal of some kind, or simply take over the project?

A: He was well compensated and happy with our arrangement. It was his idea to pass the torch in fact. We met through the site. I had discovered a big vulnerability in the way he had configured the main Bitcoin wallet that was being used to process all of the deposits and withdrawals on the site. At first he ignored me, but I persisted and gained his trust by helping him secure the wallet. From there we became close friends working on Silk Road together.

In Ross' journal it says exactly that, how Ross met VJ:

Quote
"Around this time, Variety Jones showed up. This was the biggest and strongest willed character I had met through the site thus far. He quickly proved to me that he had value by pointing out a major security hole in the site I was unaware of. It was an attack on bitcoind."
1737  Bitcoin / Bitcoin Discussion / Re: DEA Agents in Silk Road Case Face Fraud Charges on: April 20, 2015, 08:23:27 AM
Did anyone read this already?
http://ia801506.us.archive.org/27/items/gov.uscourts.nysd.422824/gov.uscourts.nysd.422824.232.8.pdf

Seems to be taken from Ross Ulbrichts PC: Agent Force giving information about ongoing investigations to DPR.

Edit: Not only that! It shows how Coinbase worked with the feds and a lot more interesting details about the SR case in general.

Why couldn't anyone cash out and stay anonymous?

I sold a lot of coins and my personal information is not floating on the internet. Satoshi could have sold too. Nobody knows.

Sorry, but:

OK, reading DPRs and VJs logs I can most certainly say that VJ was an agent....

Still reading so this claim might change....

EDIT: Who the f*ck is  PatHenry?

This thing is giving me a headache to the point of where I do not wanna bother anymore...

PatHenry seems to be Inigo

17/10/2012 - User Inigo registers an account on SR forum.

and from https://drugs-forum.com/forum/showthread.php?t=261111

"In 2012, DPR was sent the Virginia driver's license of Andrew Michael Jones, a.k.a. inigo, the man he hired to manage message forums. He called himself "Patrick Henry" in one chat:"
