181  Alternate cryptocurrencies / Altcoin Discussion / Re: What's with DARKCOIN? on: May 31, 2014, 04:31:20 AM
again... NXT has not been forked or double spent, and Darkcoin has.  Which is more insecure so far?

Insecure ? You are I believe, seeing the time you spend spreading FUD giving advice for free without a hidden agenda. Bye.

How is a question advice?  I am looking for additional information.  I would like an honest answer.

bump

Dark was forked to add new features. When has it been double spent? I don't remember hearing anything of the sort.

The Masternode issue is being fixed and will be rolled out in the middle of June.

Development Update - 5/30/2014

Fork Causes and Solutions
Over the last few days, InternetApe and I have been collecting data to help recreate the problems we experienced with the last hard fork. We reached out to the community and requested that anyone still running a daemon on the wrong fork report back to us. We received a great number of responses, and analysis of these daemons was incredibly useful in our effort to determine the root cause of the issue.

After examining the daemons and their associated blockchains, we've determined that, when approving blocks, in very rare situations the Masternode voting system was looking at the incorrect previous block. The forked clients were receiving an error that could only have been caused by the client comparing the current block to something that wasn't the correct previous block. This error caused the votes to appear manipulated and the client would reject the block.

Later, when receiving the same block again, the client would accept the block. This makes it clear that there wasn't an issue with the block itself, but with the system that checks it.

To solve this problem, we are going to take a multifaceted approach to development:

1.) We are recreating this problem on testnet in order to determine the best fix possible (it's a rare error, so it's taking some time).
2.) We are implementing automatic checkpointing, so that if this does happen again the network will not be able to diverge paths. In the event of a rejected block, the auto-checkpointing system will be able to tell the daemon to retry it later and put the daemon on the correct chain.

There's a lot of disinformation being spread around, people are acting pretty silly.

Yes, now he is rich, so why working ? ;-)

You think he was broke before darkcoin? lol..
I bet his most important target in life is not getting rich!

It might be... actually creating something of utility! You can hear the collective gasp of the altcoin world in the background at the mere suggestion!

From the wild markets point of view Duffields new post is "good" and "bad" (somethings got pushed back to July) Will be interesting to see the reaction.  Cheesy

Well considering a mere bird fart sends headless chickens running about screaming... I'm willing to bet we'll see some irrational market reactions.

edit: how do headless chickens scream if they don't have heads? I don't know...

Rumors of your death have been greatly exaggerated. This is splendid.

edit: any hints on what the "significant improvements to anonymity" line is about? I am seeing a vision of rings in the sky! Am I close?

2nd edit: Masternode payments will be in RC3 in mid-june then. Ok!

Evan is dead ?

Dead you say? He's just figured out a way to transmute himself into the blockchain to check on code directly.

I´ll take my life savings to jump in.

Indeed I must agree. The validity of any technical analysis is predicated upon the straightness and orientation of its arrows.

It appears this sir has used his own hand to draw arrows. This is not advisable! You must use thousand dollar programs and cover the chart in horizontal and diagonal lines and a plethora of question marks. That way, if your analysis turns out to be wrong you have what is known as the 'Question Mark Fallback.'

I don't usually talk much about price, because honestly I don't really care. I'm mostly concerned with functionality and building something with real utility.

However, that's what the forums have been consumed with so here's my take on this. Darkcoin is six months old, last month we went from $0.77 to $15.00. It was literally four weeks long, and what goes up must come down. Crypto currencies grow in this way, it's actually normal. Next we'll form a base somewhere about here and things will get quiet before we make our next move to the upside.

I don't post all of the time because, I work insane amounts of time on Darkcoin. This is my job and when I'm posting I'm not coding. Plus, I'm an introvert and I really like putting on headphones and cranking out some code. It's what I do.

What's next?

Things will relax and I'll start perfecting the hard fork for the masternode payments, then RC3. When we're happy with that, I have contacts now all over the media that would love to do another article and update our progress.

Speaking of things coming down, that goes for X11Coin too. From the looks of it, you trust your money to the decentralized mixer by the way. They're pretty secretive about how it works, but that's what I gather from it. I'd love to get a response. DarkSend is trustless for a reason, you don't want the "XNodes" running off with the money.

Well, as I stated before I literally just returned from 2 week long vacation. Needless to say I was blown away by the attention DRK has received as of late, and to be honest it's well deserved. The amount the price increased was pretty insane just looking at the charts, so as you stated, it's not a surprise it's coming back down.

With regards to the hard fork for resolving master node payments. Take your time and perfect it. Cryptocurrency investors are incredibly skittish and have a short attention span. I've been trading bitcoin for a couple years and have heard it all. People saying bitcoin was dead after it dropped from the $30 range back down to the $1 range. It was declared dead thousands of times by thousands of different people. You wouldn't know it by taking a look around today.

The DRK price will fluctuate for sure, as it has with BTC. People catch a whiff of something and they react either way. Keep plugging away and do what you do best, I'm sure the end result will be something useful and unique.

Masternode payments up and running?

Turned off ATM

Was there an issue with implementation? *I've been out of the loop quite a while.

Just got back from a long vacation. Holy mother of god... Looks like I missed quite a bit...

How was it?

Absolutely fantastic! Relaxing on a beach.  Grin

Looks like DRK was finally discovered! Masternode payments up and running?

edit: looks like some insanely explosive growth.

Apart from Amazon, who else are masternode ops using? (Pref non US)

Speaking of "apart from Amazon"...  I would be interested to know what percentage of the 50-odd masternodes are there right now.  It'd be easy for them to shut them all down on a whim.

Right now, 30 of 55 are running on Amazon. Hence my desire to run my intended others elsewhere.

The decentralized solution has become centralized.

Well, not really, not practically.  First off, Amazon has services in something like 6-8 different locations around the world.  Plus, each node is owned by different people, they're in control of them, not Amazon.  So it's still decentralized.  It's not the same as having a handful of servers serving up something like a blockchain, as in android wallets, or mixing service from one or two servers.

I am interested in setting up a masternode on a second computer on my home network. I posted before but didn't get any responses. Is it generally not a wise thing to host one on your home computer? Are most people using hosting services?

The nodes should really be spread out across different countries and different services. I was figuring that hosting my own gives me more control over it, but, does it make my network more vulnerable to targeted attack? I would obviously be broadcasting my IP, correct?

why the price went down so hard?

Because it went up so hard. Gravity.

OK, let me first state that technically some of this is  over my head. I am not a cryptographer or even a programmer.

That being said, I was wondering about something. If it has been discussed previously please forgive me.

What if instead of darksend sending coins to the pool and then on to a singular final address, it sends coins to multiple addresses that are in the same wallet. What if these multiple addresses were contained within a master address, that had anywhere from 3-5 addresses contained within. Master addresses could be generated much like you would generate an address in most crypto wallets, except it would have multiple sub-addresses. So each time you generate a new master address, you get 3-5 new sub-addresses. The change from darksend transactions could then be sent back to the sender at multiple sub-addresses.

Now obviously the owner of the master address and subsequently the sub-addresses would have to be masked somehow. Could it then  be encrypted?

Is this even possible? Just an idea. If it has been discussed before or is totally asinine I apologize.
196  Alternate cryptocurrencies / Announcements (Altcoins) / Re: [ANN][DRK] DarkCoin | First Anonymous Coin | First X11 | First DGW | ASIC Resistant on: May 04, 2014, 12:33:13 AM
So I have a bit of a confession to make.  Maybe you guys already knew this but...

Today I figured out that you cannot darksend 101 coins unless you have 1000 coins in your wallet.

Just to clarify: when you send 101 coins from address A to address B, you submit 1000 coins into the 1000 coin pool, address B recieves 101 and you receive 899 back at a change address C.

Same goes if you want to darkssend 10.1 coins, you need 100 coins in your wallet.

If you want to darksend 1.1 coins you need to have 10 coins in your wallet.

So back to my confession - when I discovered this issue I panicked a bit and sold 7,000 coins and tanked the market  Sad.

If anyone can come up with an ingenious solution to this problem I'll buy back all of these coins in an instant. Put your thinking caps on Grin

pool : 10, 100, 1000
darkssend 10.1 coins --> 10 + 0.1   --> need 10 + 10 coins, not 100
darkssend 101 coins --> 100 + 1  ---> need 100 + 10 coins , not 1000

Need more smallest pool's size.

Isn't it ?

If there is 1 coin pool, just need 1 coin more.

Improved Anonymity
An  anonymity enhancement to the generic CoinJoin implementation  is added by only allowing
inputs of the same size into the DarkSend pools. These sizes are referred to as “denominations”
and are in  powers of  ten  (for example,  1DRK, 10DRK, 100DRK, 1000DRK).
This allows the
inputs from all users to be virtually the same. Outputs per user must add up to the denomination
size.

This is correct. It appears he panic sold for no reason if that was his reason for selling.

Good news on the development front, yet a small dip on the charts. Are folks not happy with the open source release of DarkSend?

Well we've just had a huge pump and recovered just amazingly well. We're still close to 3x the value we had before this pump with a peak around 4.2x the value before the pump. DarkSend hasn't been open sourced yet though.

Here's a little graph to help you understand how Darkcoin price works for people who follow development versus people who only notice darkcoin when they are done with their pump and dump shitcoins.

Yep. It's pretty funny how many people out there lack the vision to see longer than a day or a week. They run around like a mob of chickens with their heads cut off, throwing their money in random directions with the faint hope they will become rich. They have the foresight of moles and the attention span of goldfish. They don't care about coins with legitimate futures, unless of course they heard about it in trollbox, in which case they buy at the top and bang their heads on desks when the dump truck buries them in shit.

Anyone care to take a look at my proposed new Darkcoin site? Comments over here appreciated: https://darkcointalk.org/threads/new-drk-website.350/

Also, if anyone is up to writing guides for users, miners, masternodes hosts, that would be grand!

Here's the sample website on a temp host: http://darkcoinsample.hostoi.com/

Very nice work sir. It's a large improvement over the first design iteration. The colors fit nicely together, and the font is well chosen. A+.

The one thing you might consider changing is the header font color or background. The text blends in a tiny bit too well with the header background. Needs more contrast.
199  Alternate cryptocurrencies / Announcements (Altcoins) / Re: [ANN][DRK] DarkCoin | First Anonymous Coin | First X11 | First DGW | ASIC Resistant on: April 30, 2014, 10:16:48 PM
I like Evan's idea of going open source as soon as it is ready. My only concern is security. It would be terrible if there was some bug that caused coins to be lost.a month) will hurt more than it will help IMO.

I think that due to the nature of how a Masternode works with 1000DRK hanging out there, a little caution is in order. I wish it would stay closed source for a little longer and have more internal audits before throwing it out there to be cloned by more shitcoins... DRK value is slowly tanking... Not that I am all uptight about my invested value, but that the price drop means people are moving away from it, not towards it... In such a circumstance, casting your pearls out there to be trampled by swine can't help... I agree that EVENTUAL open source is mandatory. I just feel that this is too fast for the unique circumstances. You know damn well that with 1000DRK at stake, bugs found will not be shared and will end up black-hatting DRK into dirt. Assuming there are bugs... ;-) It's a new thing in crypto, land of extreme greed and douchebaggery. More caution is in order.

I also wish that it mixed with those 1000DRK. Only makes a good thing better and the coin is already sitting there...

This made me laugh so hard because it's so true.

Wanted to let everyone know that I've been rewriting/editing copy for a new website, and have made some progress on adapting a template. Still a bit to do but would welcome feedback so far. It's just a proposal but should hopefully be better than the current site.

Here's a screengrab of part of the front page...

Sorry to say but  I don't think that color scheme works at all. The light blue looks way out of place, and the 'Darkcoin' text logo at the top left is lost in the header background. Also the colors in the Darkcoin logo don't really match up with the chosen color scheme in general. The font choice is excellent though.

EDIT: Also, if those arrows are meant for navigation, they need to contrast more with the background. Have to strain to see them.
