The newbie has 0 posts now as of now ( obviously that post was deleted due to spam / off-topic ) so what happens now? you can't edit the flag ! wait for him to make another scam attempt and get someone else to flag him ? the new system is a bit messed up. I've seen many flags use the scammer's thread as a reference, and I think that's a mistake. It's better to make a new topic on the scam accusation board, and use that to create a flag. Meanwhile, doge-games created a new topic (I didn't check his website).

I'm assuming he's just talking about producing an API endpoint. Sort of, a URL which supports a GET request and returns a valid format (JSON). No library needed. Pretty much what you have here ( http://loyce.club/Merit/merit.all.txt), just converted to a JSON format w/ the ability to filter based off parameters (sending user, receiving user, etc) It could be done w/ 1 front-facing PHP script. I don't know JSON/PHP (and don't really have the time to learn it now), so it's not something I can easily produce. But if someone (you?) wants to create it based on the full Merit data, go ahead. I can create for instance api.loyce.club to host it. Just tell me what I need to do ![Tongue](https://bitcointalk.org/Smileys/default/tongue.gif)

The main problem is probably getting the merit data. You would need to make your own scraper to get merit data and then build an API or maybe ask Vod or Loyce for an API. I have no plans on making an API (and have no idea how to do this). Besides, I don't scrape Merit continuously, only weekly (full list: merit.all.txt). API probably is best solution, but i was thinking about parsing HTML from user's merit summary page & built a list/dictionary contains total merit sent & count of merit transaction to an user. Instead of scraping individual user's merit summaries, it's much less work to just scrape Recent merits and keep track (that's what BPIP does). I think Piggy updated it to where it does actually support PMs. Correct. Maggiordome was polluting the list of unread posts too much.

@marlboroza I think Loyce sold his BKB or swapped them for BKT before selling them. I am sure he can confirm but he made a fraction of what he should have had before serial scammer Dean Nolan decided to destroy betking post-ICO Correct. I got out of this debacle. BKB tokens would expire soon if I wouldn't swap them, so I swapped and sold them. When I opened this topic, my BKB tokens would have been worth close to 0.2 BTC based on the ICO promises. I got about 0.0045 BTC for them. The nice but also tricky thing about Flags (unlike trust) is that I promised this: On my honor, I affirm the following: 1) This user violated a written contract, resulting in damages; 2) I have not been made whole by the user; 3) no existing flag covers this same incident; 4) this incident is accurately and completely described in the above topic; 5) the incident occurred roughly in the month given above. Furthermore, I promise to withdraw my support for this flag if this user makes me whole in the future. If BetKing were to things right with me, I have to withdraw my support for the Flag.

The '#' is not very conspicuous. That's by design: The "#" symbol is supposed to be inconspicuous, since it's not supposed to be a warning or a "mark of shame".

if it doesn't confirm within 24 hours, the channel gets closed at a much higher fee.
I think it will happen to me... i used 4 sat/byte . I thought "I am not in a hurry, i am not transferring to anyone" If there was achange output, you can use CPFP on it. Edit: But, I will be "charged" for closing the channel? How am I going to be charged, if I am the only one with the private key? Theoretically I would have to go to the wallet and pay this fee for closing the channel, right? Or is Eclair getting my keys and closing channels after 24h? This is not clear to me.
Edit2: Just saw that to open the channel I needed to transfer 0.001 to another wallet.... so they have the keys... That is basically a loan.
I admit I don't know all the details of LN under the hood, but from what I understand you've send the funds to an address that both you and the node have some control over. I think your wallet gave the node a signed transaction which can be used to close the channel. So the node can decide to close the channel, thereby initiating another transfer (with a predefined lock time) to close the channel. When that happens because it's unconfirmed, the node does CPFP. More of my experience with it here. I didn´t knew about it. I understood now what people were saying when they said nodes were becoming banks. I don't think that's entirely correct. The "banks" problem is more when nodes become very big and LN becomes very centralized, but even then anyone can still create their own node. 99Bitcoins.com can explain it much better than I can: if I want to transact with my friend, we open an “off-chain” payment channel between us. ~snip~ Simply put, my friend and I write down how much each one owes the other without ever exchanging the money until we choose to settle the bill. ~snip~ When you open a payment channel, each of you deposits a certain amount of money that acts as a security deposit. On my wallet, it shows I only transfer 0.05 btc to the exchange "BTCC". But on bitcoin block explorer, it is showed that I transferred 0.05+4 btc. Actually I remembered I only transfered 0.05 btc. This sounds like a change address: whenever you send Bitcoin, the entire amount (in that input) has to be used at once. If you had 4.05 BTC and sent 0.05 BTC to an exchange, the remaining 4 BTC is send to a change address, which should be part of your own wallet.

I found it very expensive to open the channel. Unless we are planning to make a lot of transitions, it is more expensive to use lightning network, right? It's up to you what fee to choose, but as I found out the hard way: if it doesn't confirm within 24 hours, the channel gets closed at a much higher fee. That's the part I can't control (I think the node decides), and fees for opening and closing channels are indeed the main worry I have for large scale LN adoption. As long as the node keeps running, I don't really see a reason to close the channel.

So I want my mom/average Joe to have a basic understanding of what bitcoin is, before even thinking about buying some. The problem that explaining Bitcoin is difficult Although you have listed some useful resources, I completely disagree with you ![Tongue](https://bitcointalk.org/Smileys/default/tongue.gif) I don't think the average Bitcoin user needs to know how Bitcoin works. All they need is a wallet, and start using it. There are some pitfalls, but modern wallets take care of most of them already. Back to the example of your mom: give her a funded paper wallet, ask her to install a wallet on her phone, make sure the backup phrase is secured, and let her sweep the funds from the paper wallet into the phone wallet. After that, she can use Bitcoin! Of course there's the generic "don't invest more than you're willing to lose" (Google gives 86 million hits so I'm not quoting a specific source here), but that goes for all investments. You should try to explain the basics in a few sentences, like: "Bitcoin is electronic cash, you and only you are responsible for your own money, there is no undo-button, the value can go up 1000% or down 90% in just a couple of months, and scammers are always trying to get it from you so be vigilant". I don't think this has to be difficult, because that would mean Bitcoin would never be able to reach mass adoption. And if you think Bitcoin is difficult, try explaining fiat money! I'm still flabbergasted when I think of a private organisation that prints our money out of thin air, which caused almost any human and any government to be in eternal debt. The fiat money system is much more difficult to understand than Bitcoin. Makes you wonder why they never explained that in school doesn't it?

First: you can expect a lot of begging ![Tongue](https://bitcointalk.org/Smileys/default/tongue.gif) I want to hear what causes are close to your heart. I already posted in some other places but want to hear your suggestions on how this wealth will be best used before my time is past. Have you seen the Pineapple Fund? If not, it's a good start to see what someone who donated 5104 BTC did with his money. To be taken serious, he started with a signed message. That proves ownership of the funds. People make up all sorts of claims without being able to back them up. since you love bitcoin and you claim to have amassed your wealth because of it maybe you could start donating to different bitcoin-related projects I like this suggestion. Coindesk has a recent article on Bitcoin Core funding, which has always been a bit of a problem. Miners take the money, not developers. you might consider donating some of your wealth to the development of the forum used the donate menu As far as I know, the forum doesn't need money.

~, but on the other hand it's a burden to normal users. 200GB+ of storage, or pruned mode that brings your computer down if you're on an HDD. I can't believe this is still an issue after almost 2 years! It could be noticeable, but it would be far smaller than the 10 times difference you get with proper caching (simulated using a RAM drive). I still think this might be an Operating System problem. Are you still only using Windows for this? Reading some discussions on Github, it seems the importance of pruned mode (and other space or time optimization methods like assumeutxo) increases as the size of the blockchain increases. I can confirm this for my case: I pruned my blockchain to 99 GB (the maximum amount allowed) because I was running low on disk space. I don't want the hassle of getting a bigger disk until I replace my laptop entirely.
I'm going to run some tests myself ![Tongue](https://bitcointalk.org/Smileys/default/tongue.gif) It will be a very rough estimate, as my PC is currently processing Merit data and will be processing Trust data tomorrow. This is what I'm going to do: 1. Test syncing a pruned blockchain on HDD (starting now). 2. Test on RAM drive (starting when the previous is done): On Linux, this works for me: mkdir /dev/shm/prunedBitcoin # create new directory in /dev/shm, which by default uses up to 50% of available RAM chmod 700 /dev/shm/prunedBitcoin # basic security on a multi-user-system bitcoin -datadir=/dev/shm/prunedBitcoin -prune=550 # now we wait mv /dev/shm/prunedBitcoin ~ # move to your home-directory after you close Bitcoin Core I'm using database cache 300 MB (my usual).
Update: The pruned download to hdd is now 48% done. Most of the day it downloaded several MB per second, with around 6% progress increase per hour. Then, I started a torrent download (Knoppix DVD) on the same hdd, which completely took all my bandwidth, and dropped the progress increase to 0.06% per hour. When the torrent was done, Bitcoin Core didn't speed up. I restarted it, and after a while was still barely using any CPU power, but eventually the download speed went up, later CPU usage went up, and it's now processing several blocks per second again (Last block time Feb 2017). I'm not using the latest version of Bitcoin Core yet, but this seems to be faster than I remember from when I tested the same on a RAM drive. I think my Wifi got faster. If it keeps going like this, the pruned download to hdd will be finished tomorrow morning. In that case I won't bother to compare doing the same to a RAM drive. I can't reproduce OP's problem with very slow syncing of a pruned blockchain on hdd so far.

How or where do they check that I have enough funds to transfer 10BTC? Transacions use inputs, if the address doesn't hold enough funds, it's simply rejected. There are many videos on Bitcoin on Youtube if you want a simplified explanation. It might help to manually create, verify and sign (don't enter private keys on an online website!) some transactions on https://coinb.in/ as an exercise.

I've been in favour of showing Trust ratings on all boars for a very long time. The best example I know is user Velkro, who promotes a scam in his signature, and mostly posts in Beginners & Help to target naive new users. Showing trust and Flags (and the red !!!) on all boards could help prevent some scams.

I am using Éclair wallet. Do I need to send some funds to the wallet so I open a channel? Yes. A channel needs at least 1 m BTC (some nodes require more), and to do that, you'll need to fund the Eclair wallet first (on-chain).

I was asked to give my opinion on this matter. First: I find it very hard to take an accusation seriously when someone talks like this: Son of a bitch so called James! Fuck your mothers life. this so called James faggot. faggot. Rubbish kid. I tried anyway ![Smiley](https://bitcointalk.org/Smileys/default/smiley.gif) This is a very long and chaotic way to do business. It's like: one guy says "Bro that's my policy" and the other guy says "Ok bro", and it goes on and on and on. A proper way to make a deal, is creating one post in the appropriate thread to confirm all details, after which the other party quotes it and confirms the details. Now it goes like "i send you 1/2 of btc,k you give me account, i send you the rest", then 3 minutes later asks: "eth address please", followed by much more messages, some misunderstanding about what was expected to be bought, and then OP starts with "son of bitch" and "Motherfucker". It's terrible to read the entire thing from a video, OP can you post a transcript? Based on what I've seen so far, without transcript: My suggestion (in this order!) 1. Cean: post a refund addy. Post it here, in public, in this thread. 2. Qservices: refund Cean. 3. Both: learn how to do business. Make clear requests, don't send 500 messages about something this small, and put all requirements in 1 post. Don't do business together again. 4. All who left red trust or supported a flag: remove the tag, stop supporting the flag. 5. Cean: lock this thread. (After reading a decent transcript I might still change this) Remember theymos' suggestion: de-escalate and forgive! Update: current flag:

did you find a fast way to do it? Although this is an old topic, I'll answer what I would do: 1. Make a list of all existing Bitcoin addresses that have a balance (there's a topic on this where you can easily download the list). 2. You now have 2 lists: "funded" and "tocheck". 3. Make sure each list only has unique addresses. 4. Use "sort" and "uniq" (standard Linux commands) to find duplicates. Something like `cat funded tocheck | sort | uniq -c | sort -nr | head` will tell you if any address occurs on both lists. 5. If there is a match, find it's balance. If there are many matches, adjust the commands a bit. The benefit of using the tools mentioned in step 4 is that they already exist, and are highly efficient in handling large amounts of data. It may require a lot of RAM, but if needed you can get that on the cloud for a short period.
