1861  Bitcoin / Pools / Re: Blockswarm Protocol proposition - solo mining, full node cooperative on: June 27, 2015, 06:14:33 PM
I mean "solo mining" in the sense that my individual node is determining what goes into the block, not in the sense that I will receive the full block reward.
Yes, that's a correct interpretation, then.  Your node determines what transactions are included as well as the coinbase payout.  That coinbase is typically very similar for all nodes, with the exceptions listed in my previous posts.  So, while the transactions may be wildly different across nodes, the payouts should be virtually identical Smiley.
1862  Bitcoin / Pools / Re: [1500 TH] p2pool: Decentralized, DoS-resistant, Hop-Proof pool on: June 27, 2015, 06:11:01 PM
windpath is upgrading.

any eta mate ?

Actually I was not, just sat down to get started, something funky happened this morning, will update when I know more...

OK, back and and running on p2pool 14.

Not sure what happened this morning, took the opportunity to do a hard reboot the server, first time in over a year Wink

Thanks again Forrest!

As a side note, seeing lots of blank lines in p2pools output that were not there before:

Any ideas?

Edit: Due to the upgrade the links to the alternative front ends in my site footer will not work, I'll re-install them next week.

From forrestv yesterday:

i'm seeing this, lots of blanks, the blank space are normally where it says new work for worker ! diff xxx share diff xxx & block value but in my case only 1 worker shows up n the rest are blank. getting shares though.

i have several workers at same & other add's but they are at different worker diff's which i normally see.

That should be normal. The patch accepted from midnightmagic throttles the prints from different workers. I'm not sure why it's printing blanks, though - I'll look into it.
1863  Bitcoin / Bitcoin Technical Support / Re: Getting an error I've never seen on 0.10.2 core on: June 27, 2015, 05:42:46 PM
Mine ended up just going away on its own yesterday.  I've since restarted the bitcoind and updated p2pool to version 14.0, and haven't seen the error again.
1864  Bitcoin / Pools / Re: Blockswarm Protocol proposition - solo mining, full node cooperative on: June 27, 2015, 05:25:58 PM
but just to clarify, each miner is still working on blocks created from their private node. The share chain is just a way to distribute the block reward?
Yes, each p2pool node determines what transactions it will include when constructing a block.  The coinbase transaction is built from the share chain.  If you look at a p2pool share, it will contain the payouts for every active p2pool miner that currently has shares on chain.  So, while the included transactions may differ from node to node, the coinbase transaction that is included as part of the block creation is pretty much the same.

I write "pretty much the same" because my node might find a block before it gets the information about a share from another node.  So, that other node would have an extra share that mine doesn't when the block is created.

cool, thanks for the clarification. I just want to make sure that mining in P2pool is essentially solo mining. I think this may have been explained to me before, but sometimes the understanding lapses...
That's an interesting way of describing mining on p2pool.  Sure, if there were no other nodes on the network, then yes, you'd be solo mining.  However, because of the share chain, and every p2pool miner's contributions, you aren't truly solo mining at all.  Every share that you contribute, which satisfies the difficulty of the share chain shares is added to the chain (assuming of course it isn't an orphan or dead share).  Every share you have on the chain that is on the list of shares to be paid out when a block is found will be part of the coinbase transaction of that block.  Basically, every p2pool node says, "hey, here are some number of transactions I'm going to include in my block.  If a miner happens to solve this block, here are all the miners I know of that contributed to the pool and how much they should be paid for their efforts."
1865  Bitcoin / Mining speculation / Re: Bitcoin Mining Help on: June 27, 2015, 04:50:36 PM
that is true. you can mine for fun but dont expect to make a profit.

you should go to the mining section and read more about it:

https://bitcointalk.org/index.php?board=14.0

I don't get this old wheeze, it was the same thing I heard last year.  I've been mining since November with about 20TH.  I've ROI'd all the boxes (sp20s and S5s) and am at a pure profit at this point.

That said, I don't think this is a good time to invest in mining gear.  We're going to see the next gen of chips within the next 6 months and the difficulty change may make it impossible to ROI unless you have really cheap electricity.
People have been saying how unprofitable mining is practically since mining began.  Like you, all of my gear has long since made back my initial investment.  Sure, my S3s are pretty much at the end of their life given current conditions (difficulty, exchange rate, etc).  That hasn't stopped me yet. 1866  Bitcoin / Mining / Re: Bitcoin Generator? on: June 27, 2015, 04:43:07 PM
If it works then how does it do so.
Can anyone say.
There is no such thing as a bitcoin generator, no matter what the proponents of these scams would have you believe.  The only way new bitcoins are created is by mining and creating new blocks.  That's it.  You can't just run some random program on your computer and have it create bitcoins.
1867  Bitcoin / Pools / Re: Blockswarm Protocol proposition - solo mining, full node cooperative on: June 27, 2015, 04:34:57 PM

1868  Bitcoin / Pools / Re: [1500 TH] p2pool: Decentralized, DoS-resistant, Hop-Proof pool on: June 27, 2015, 04:17:35 PM
Well, it's not decentralised when you centralise a bunch of users onto one p2pool node ...
Coincadence has about 40 TH/s. That's not exactly what I'd call centralized. Maybe neighborhood-ized?
Highlighted so you might read it again Smiley
People are going to mine on others' nodes.  For example, I don't advertise my node at all, yet I've regularly got a few people mining on it besides myself.  Windpath has done a bunch of work and is very active here in the p2pool community, so it's natural that people would mine on his node.

There certainly are plenty of nodes out there, with plenty of people mining on them.  There are also a few nodes that are popular, like windpath's and OgNasty's, that get the extra traffic.  In an ideal world, sure, everyone would be running their own node.  Until then, I think we can all safely say that p2pool is definitely the most decentralized bitcoin mining pool out there. Smiley
...
It's the only one Smiley

Any other pool that says it is ... is lying.
As is a certain case well known.

I was referring to the mistake of confusing the two terms.
When you get a bunch of people all mining together on one node, it's centralised ... even if p2pool itself is decentralised by design.
Fair enough... and that certain pool's false claim of decentralization is definitely well known Tongue.

Oh, the upgrade to 14.0 took all of about 30 seconds, windpath Smiley.  You should have plenty of time while the kids are napping.
1870  Bitcoin / Pools / Re: [1500 TH] p2pool: Decentralized, DoS-resistant, Hop-Proof pool on: June 26, 2015, 06:54:37 PM
I saw this error on my node:

(from bitcoind) EXCEPTION: St12out_of_range CInv::GetCommand() : type=513 unknown type bitcoin in ProcessMessages()

First time I've seen this... Anyone have any ideas?
(...)
Error messages on daemon indicates some problems on daemon, not P2Pool.
P2Pool is merely showing this in log.
Agreed and it is why I cross posted in tech support as well Smiley
1871  Other / Beginners & Help / Re: Newbies, how much bitcoin do you have, and how did you get it? on: June 26, 2015, 05:13:29 PM
I started with alts... LTC and DOGE mining with my Mac.  My very first BTC transaction was a purchase of 0.1BTC.  I've obtained quite a bit since then through mining, purchases and services.
1872  Bitcoin / Bitcoin Technical Support / Re: Getting an error I've never seen on 0.10.2 core on: June 26, 2015, 04:27:08 PM
Does it crash? Or just logs the warning and move on?

Anyone can send an Inventory Vector to other nodes (https://en.bitcoin.it/wiki/Protocol_documentation#Inventory_Vectors)
Accepted types though are 0 through 3.
It seems somebody is spamming with message type 513.
No it doesn't crash... it happily continues to run along.  It has since stopped.  So this is more of an inquiry as to what the cause might have been.  Would you mind explaining what that inventory vector is and what it is typically used for?

Thanks!

Edit: never mind I see the link... Duh... Missed it.  Too much Guinness Smiley

1875  Bitcoin / Bitcoin Technical Support / Re: transaction with zero fee on: June 24, 2015, 06:48:12 PM
Transaction fee is taken but if it is without transaction fees then it might take some time.
"some time"- pass over 48 hours and nothing Sad

Your transaction is gone from blockchain.info:
https://blockchain.info/tx/3a1657951df6fd70420f1d769cea1f3c413240fb898bbee08ea028547be4459e

But still available on 2 other blockexplorers:
http://btc.blockr.io/tx/info/3a1657951df6fd70420f1d769cea1f3c413240fb898bbee08ea028547be4459e
https://www.blocktrail.com/BTC/tx/3a1657951df6fd70420f1d769cea1f3c413240fb898bbee08ea028547be4459e

If you do not broadcast the transaction again, I think it will most likely be dropped from mempool soon. When it does, create new transaction and remember to add a fee. You said you used blockchain.info wallet to send that transaction, login in your wallet and see if the unconfirmed transaction is gone from your history.
You can still find that transaction on blockchain.info... I'm looking at it now.  It appears it was rebroadcast.

Given the current exchange rate of ~$243 per BTC, current network difficulty, miners hashing at advertised rates/power consumption and an average power cost of $0.10 per kWh...

S3 will net you ~$0.26 a day
S5 will net you ~$1.42 a day
SP20 will net you ~$1.30 a day

Just food for thought Smiley

Hi

I need help ,to setup home rig

my goal is 15TH/s, the power is free , but each s5 cost 480 $ with delivery
do u think should i start or not ?
and am i mine in a pool or solo , could it be profitable ?

How long it takes for ROI

Thank You
I think you need to define your "home setup" a bit more here.  To get ~15TH/s from S5s, you'll need 13 of them.  13 S5s will consume 7.67kW of electricity.  That's just about $18.41 a day in electricity costs if the power is $0.10 per kWh.  Somebody's going to notice an increase of $560 a month to their bill...
1879  Bitcoin / Pools / Re: Bitcoin Mining Pool List on: June 24, 2015, 05:06:06 PM
Couple of things...

1) Why do you call multipool.us/cryptopros.com "p2pool proxy pools"?  They don't, as far as I know, contribute hash rate to the p2pool network.  The only p2pool proxy pool I can think of is OgNasty's "NastyPoP"... where he's got a ckpool instance on top of the p2pool framework.
2) P2Pool does indeed merge mine if the node operator configures it.  NMC, IXC, HUC, I0C, FSC, DVC, etc are all merge mined on p2pool.  Also, the fees are dependent upon the node operator as well.  It also can be configured to donate to the author of p2pool (forrestv).
1880  Bitcoin / Bitcoin Technical Support / Re: transaction with zero fee on: June 24, 2015, 04:59:45 PM
if you send tx with zero fees then there is no fixed time it will take for confirmations
it may take hours, days or may be it will never confirmed.
always send transaction with fees to support the nextwork and miners

what you mean "never"? like never ever? Is technically possible, that TX with 0 fee will never be confirmed? I really don't think so..
You had to throw that word "technically" in there, didn't you? Tongue

Whether a transaction is included is completely up to the miner, or the pool if it is delegating work.  Technically, miners could not ever bother to confirm a transaction with no fees, since it offers no incentives to do so.  Now, if you generated that transaction from the core software, it will continually rebroadcast it.  Other wallets will at some point in time stop broadcasting it.
