So let me get this straight... it's impossible to have a closed case with 4 gpu's without watercooling ?
Nobody has been able to do this even with those fancy cases ?

EDIT : like this one : HAF 932 Advanced http://www.coolermaster-usa.com/product.php?product_id=3037

...You don't gain any extra value from having a case and special cooling for that.

What do you mean ?

More high-end cards have resale value though, very important.

Hi !

I'm about to order parts to build my first rig. I can get free electricity if I do my best to make the machine look presentable ( no open case ) and if I keep the noise at an acceptable level. A friend of mine offered to put it in his office, he has free power.

Hence, I am considering a nice Antec or Nexus case. I will need big fans and super airflow.

Who has experience with this and could give me some advise ?

Also, I realise I cant put 4 7950's on the motherboard at the same time without overheating, so I will take one of the four cards and use an extender card to fix it at a different spot inside the case where it can catch a nice cool breeze Smiley

I could use some advise on the location for that 4th card too. I was thinking in a empty HD spot for example.

Ok, lets rephrase the question.

Does anyone know a motherboard that lets you connect 4 Saphire 7950 GPU's without the need for riser cables ?

The thing is... I have to keep the case closed if that possible, to make use of the sound dampening properties of the case, and also to make it look a bit more presentable. The rig will be in the office of a friend of mine.

I'm now worried that the 4 gpu's wont fit the slots on the board because they are too close together, though.

I've read many times that CPU's are pretty much irrelevent in a rig. Go for the cheapest one that fits the socket Smiley

Hi fellow noobs. ( and old timers )

I'm about to build my first mining rig. It will mine altcoins, but this is not really relevant to the questions I want to ask. My goal is to build a relatively silent rig, because my friend will let me put it in his office for free ( no power costs ) if it doesn't bother him.

First, let me share what I have in mind.

- A nice case with sounddampening material : http://www.nexustek.nl/nexus_prominent5_premium_silent_pc_case.htm,
- 4x Saphire 7950
- GIGABYTE GA-990FXA-UD3  http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16813128514, its should be able to take 4 GPU's without the need for risers, thus allowing me to close the case.
- a cheap cpu
- 8 GB ram
- 1k watt PSU

Questions :

1 - Will this board indeed allow me to connect 4 7950's ? I know the speed of the PCI-e ports is not relevant, but there may be something else I'm overlooking

2 - Will it stay cool enough ? I think that case with all those big fan will suck enough cool air inside, constantly refreshing the air between the GPU's. But I don't know. Does anyone have experience with this ?

3 - If I put this rig in a small room with poor ventilation, how hot will it make the room ?

Looking forward to hearing your reactions.

Kind regards, Joeri.

I'd keep a close watch on ebay if I where you. I'm sure some people who were lucky enough to sign up early are going to auction there ASIC's of for biiiiiiiig profits. If you don't mind paying 25k for one. that is. Sounds like you might not mind.

I wouldn't either  Grin
1872  Other / Beginners & Help / Re: LiteCoin? Strengths and Weaknesses? on: March 31, 2013, 11:08:33 AM
Right now a litecoin is worth 0.7 usd. A BTC is 92 usd.

Many people asume that LTC is going to skyrocket soon when all the BTC miners have to quit because ASIC is impossible to beat with GPU's . The power needed to mine with GPU's will become so high that only people with ASIC chips will make enough money.

See it like this : LTC is to BTC as silver is to gold.

I imagine that in a couple of years LTC will be worth around 1/4 of BTC, and BTC is still only just in beta phase.

LTC worth 50 usd and BTC worth 200-250 usd in 5 years is what I'm betting on.

There's definitly some interesting stuff there, nice list.
I recommend total newbies to signup for some free BTC. You'll get a rediculously small amount ( like 0.00001 USD worth ) but at least you get to practice with a wallet and play around with it for a bit.

Hi, I'm Joeri and I'm going to build a silent and very powerful LTC mining rig soon Smiley
