I used to watch the prices of wallpaper vs the size of a dollar. I figured that once the dollar was cheaper than the wallpaper I'd wallpaper one of my rooms with dollars.
You may be aware already but you can buy sheets of uncut notes if you decide to go that way. The last wallpaper I bought was definitely not cheap. Edit: Just looked at the sheets and they are an expensive way to buy dollars. |

the combination of the best performing asset in the history of finance being also the by far most volatile asset in history is a heavy weight to lift. we are not specially trained, hardened professional traders with balls of steel. most of us are regular guys who would have never chosen becoming traders. with selling the entire stash being just a mouseclick away, hodling btc is like trading - you choose not to sell, every new moment, every new day, every new wave of FUD.
We had no choice but to grow balls of steel ourselves. when your life savings can literally evaporate overnight, getting up in the morning, checking the price would be hyper stressful for a someone not used to it. it became routine for us. but it takes time for those balls to harden. and sometimes, for example when reaching a certain threshold money figure like $100 000 or even 1mio, even seasoned btc hodlers can experience high stress levels again.
I definitely recommend taking a little profit and treating yourself now and again. Not too much cause it hurts when the price goes up and the toy you bought for $50 would have got you $500 or even $5000 (though this in itself is good training to hodl) but it's definitely nice to know that even if everything went to 0, you'd still be ahead. Another thing is to make a plan and stick to it and remember that you can't predict the future, only make the most of probabilities. Also, you can't take it with you. |

Sure people talk about altcoins as a way to generate bitcoins, but it surely does not seem like a sound strategy, unless you happen to be some kind of insider who is manipulating the shit.. which sure some of the altcoiners/shitcoiners do get involved in attempting to generate BTC in that way because they either have some kind of inside that they believe they will try to exploit or they believe that they are connected to some kind of inside... surely not an invest on fundamentals thesis, even if sometimes framed that way.
It's like pump & dump. Get in early, wait for the price to rise, get out early and leave others holding the bags. Lucrative if you are skilled at it probably but risky and I'm not that comfortable with the ethics of it.

On our local exchange here in AU, there is a constant wall on both sides that is almost identical, that is constantly moving. When i query them about it, they said it was someone who was marking the market...
Yep. It's a way to manipulate the market. If I have a bunch of Bitcoin and I want to buy at 50, I put up a sell wall at 50.1 and everyone who wants to sell has to sell below that. It doesn't always work though and it's funny to see a sell wall get eaten into because sentiment changed and it didn't get taken down soon enough. |

It should be possible to get a rough idea of how many of the trades on the book "disappear" before getting bought/sold. I think that would be pretty informative. I don't know if there are places that calculate this already? I don't believe that most (bigger) walls are actually honest. Why would anybody trade that way?

bitcointechnology is a one trick pony. blockchain is not a technology, it is a buzzword. imagine astronauts discovering some living creature on mars. it lives. the want to know what makes it "work" . if those astronauts were "blockchain-not bitcoin" dudes, they would identify some part of it as being the most important and cut it out. the creature dies and they wonder why. they think that "living" is a function of the part they cut out. but "living" is an emergent property of the entire organism that went through its evolution cycle. it is not a mere function of any identifiable part, that can be used without the rest of the creatures body.
Pretty much. It occurs to me that private databases could perhaps be viewed as "proof of stake". If it's your database, you have 100% of the stake. If it's a shared database, those involved would have various degrees of stake and it would be kinda pointless to go with proof of work for one of these (A competitive system for what is essentially a cooperative enterprise). Proof of work makes more sense for a financial system where incentives are typically not always aligned and I suspect the converse is also true (that a financial system requires POW) which would explain why eth is yet to switch. Bitcoin solves a problem and the problem is what Bitcoin solves. |

In theory I got some XRP from that airdrop a long time ago. In actuality, I can't remember at all how to access it and in truth, couldn't give a damn.
It did provide some hilarity a while back when I got into an argument with a (different) old friend who was relatively new to crypto where he was saying that it was the next big thing and I was saying it was a pile of crap and not even a crypto. That was shortly before it crashed and he suddenly went very quiet.

the tokens can not be attached to any thing in the physical world. supply chains or transport chains cannot be trusted only because some software is used. a bad actor can always just betray the system, the software cannot enforce anything. the bitcoin protocol can enforce the the rules that make a bitcoin a bitcoin. This is the major problem I have with the hype behind Eth. I think it genuinely has some very interesting use cases but this whole "code as law" thing has the very real issue that there "X as law" deal is already occupied by people and not without good reason. |

Rubes, predators and rubes who think they're predators. I sold some Bitcoin to a friend a while back. I've explained to him many times why Bitcoin is such a good purchase. He immediately exchanged it for Neos on the basis of another friend who "made a bunch" trading alts. Didn't take him long to regret that one. He now holds some Bitcoin again. Not sure how long he'll be able to keep himself from doing something with it. |
