you must be sixty

Not there yet. I do drive a 2000 car though and it definitely has a thermostat.

Edit: A quick search indicates that thermostats are not obsolete so :p

Jesus How old are you! Cheesy

When were car Thermostats stock?

My first car didn't have a rear window heater until I added one myself Smiley

I believe thermostats are still pretty standard?

Surely in a voluntary transaction, there is not going to be abilities for the individual parties to figure out how much surplus value each person got, and in many cases it might not be necessary to know those surplus values except to appreciate that they exist, otherwise the parties would not have voluntarily engaged in the transaction.

Precisely so. Though often some degree of estimation of the net value gain might be estimable. If I sell you the wooden frogs I make for $8 and you're selling them in your wooden frog shop for $12, I might get a bit of a clue.

Sounds great, wish that could be retrofitted to my car.

I know there were all sorts of similar mods available for the Mini but that was a bit of an enthusiasts' car. The fan really is just a drain on economy and power when it's not needed and if you have a small engine, that can mean a lot. I believe there was even aftermarket AC available.
1045  Economy / Speculation / Re: Wall Observer BTC/USD - Bitcoin price movement tracking & discussion on: August 23, 2021, 02:42:56 PM
So how does it work nowadays then?

Typically the points are done solid state and you just have a coil per plug or cylinder (coil packs). So no need to be switching high voltages around and no moving parts.

Fans are no longer driven with fan belts either Cheesy No more shoving cardboard down the front of the radiator on cold days.

i dont miss distributors.. used to keep a can of WD40 (or wire dryer) in the vehicles to spray the cap and plug wires when they got wet.

Me either. I got stranded on the side of a motorway because of a faulty distributor cap once. Got religious about distributor maintenance after that.

If I am following that last bit correctly, it is actually something I comfort myself with.  Because we live in a world where to many of us there is this obvious low hanging opportunity and yet the masses seem to be 99% blind.

That's the weird catch-22 in every life changing chance we get.  If they were not hard for most to see, then it would not really be the opportunity it isin the first place.  Chicken, meet egg.

The last bit was just an aside to JJG. I couldn't be bothered to quote him properly as I'm still on my first coffee. I probably should have added a horizontal line or something.
1048  Economy / Speculation / Re: Wall Observer BTC/USD - Bitcoin price movement tracking & discussion on: August 23, 2021, 02:34:57 PM
And also, I had no idea cars doesn't have distributor caps anymore.

Yep. Haven't had a distributor since 2000 and that was my wife's mini. My current car doesn't even have spark plugs Cheesy

What a glorious day

Is this from those guys who recreated the Windows background screen and then took some more? I watched their video last night.

Precisely this. My friend who has been doing the standard meme things (buying shitcoins, selling during the last correction and setting his buy orders $5 below the bottom, trading with all his stash etc) now has cold feet because Bitcoin "is too volatile and manipulable by big players" and can't be convinced that it's any better than fiat or, as he says, "the old system" because of that. Seems to be getting him quite anxious and he just can't understand how I can hodl and be cool as a cucumber.

JJG, your value post is precisely what I mean. Negotiation is the exploration of who gets what share of the excess value. I'd say it's almost never evenly divided and no reason it should be.

The following thought might be more appropriate in some other thread, but I have long wondered whether or not BTC gains by all/most of us represent some kind of "Zero Sum Game", looking at the larger view.  That is, a win for me (or us) would be a LOSS for someone else?

My inclination is to think "No", that this is not a Zero Sum arena, as it is new technology that has great promise.

Free trade is never a zero sum game. This is the mistake lefties make all the time. They only ever count the beans.

But he's been on the forum since 2014, that's what doesn't add up for me.

True. Quite a lot of posts too. If the rest of his portfolio was just simply huge... but then why bother rebalancing?

1% seems very low, especially for having been in for 4 years. I would say that even 5% would only really be for someone who doesn't really grok Bitcoin and is just getting going. (If you're just getting started and don't have much extra to invest, I could see lower numbers but then you probably don't have much in the way of other investments either).

Still, I always advocate that people should be comfortable with the investments they're making so I'm not going to call you wrong.

Seldon on the screen
Foundation movie at last
Will it be too woke

I'd put several Satoshis on yes.

I was in my teens so that was quite awhile ago for me to remember any specifics.

that's just the jist of what my memory holds on the subject, hence why I stated I don't think I would be a good person to review the piece.  Smiley

My 20s for me I think while I was at uni. I don't recall details for much of the books but I seem to recall there was a lot of filler for generally a nice little twist towards the ends.

Well I'll give an opinion but I don't think I can do a fair review as like I mentioned in the past the Foundation is literally the only thing Asimov wrote that I couldn't slog through. Maybe its because I was to young and I would get pulled in now but all I remember about it is it went into such long drawn out detail about the specifics of cataloging and fundamentally boring bureaucratic methods that It just couldn't keep my attention.

I'd think that you guys that actually have read the book would have more representative opinions on the subject than I would.

This is actually the reason I'm thrilled to see it as a show as now I can get the story line without having to wade through a 3 inch thick technical manual. Smiley

I don't really remember it that way. I do recall cryptography got a side-mention at one point in the form of message signing.

Thats just marcus being marcus.

I think some of us just find the deflation fear-mongering tiresome. "Oh no, by not squandering my money today, I can have a better life tomorrow. However will I cope?"
1060  Economy / Speculation / Re: Wall Observer BTC/USD - Bitcoin price movement tracking & discussion on: August 22, 2021, 08:16:56 PM
It could be used as a way of attacking Bitcoin by congesting the network but it would only be a temporary attack as no one is going to send that much Bitcoin. How do I know this? You can attack Bitcoin the same way now by sending 0.0000001 transactions on the network with no fees and it would congest the network but no one does it because they cannot keep it up and it would only be a temporary attack. Lightening makes it easier to do with fees but it would not make much of a difference because of the congestion it causes does not achieve any thing.

There's actually a minimum relay fee setting. Not sure what the default is these days but nodes won't forward transactions which don't have sufficient fees for a good few years now.
