21  Alternate cryptocurrencies / Altcoin Discussion / Re: Coins Killed By Cryptsy on: October 26, 2017, 07:43:52 PM
If a cryptocoin depends on an exchange to make it live or die, then it does not deserve our time and bitcoins. A cryptocoin should depend on its own community. Without it a real community, then it should die.

Developers should also be dispensable. Read about the history of Monero. It became more progressive after smooth and others deposed the founder.

I don't think you understand the scope of what Cryptsy "closing", and they way it closed had an effect on the coins.  At the same time, I don't really know if any of those coins have a hope of coming back, aside from maybe the name.

Back when Cryptsy was around, it was the largest and best set up altcoin exchange.  I think it at least felt bigger than Bittrex, it had more coins for trade, and people were more naive, as nothing of that magnitude happened before.   Everyone knew that Cryptsy was making a fortune on trade commissions, and thus alot of people felt safer keeping their coins on the exchange.

Cryptsy didn't exactly "close", in the normal sense.  Instead Big Vern stole the coins stored on the exchange.  For alot of the smaller coins, he was probably holding onto the majority of the coins in the blockchain, thus being able to kill a coin because of an exchange.  Nothing the Developer or the community could do to save it, aside from maybe a total reset of the blockchain.

Yeah I lost a pile on Cryptsy.

1 coin I would love to see in its former glory is Bottlecaps.   Not really sure if that died from Crypsy or other factors.
23  Other / Beginners & Help / Re: Can i solo mine with a rented rig ? on: October 23, 2017, 06:22:55 PM
Interesting site, but why would you ask here if you can do something on their site?

As for solo mining itself.  All depends on the coin and why you want to solo mine.  If it is a very small unknown coin solo mining can be profitable.  If you are attempting to solo mine something like BTC you can, but chances are you will never find a block, which will mean you will never get a payout.

The chance to find a coin solo mining even in a fairly low mined coin are quite low, unless you are pretty much keeping the coin alive.

Is there a reason you want to solo mine as opposed to mining within a pool?

I would say listen to your electrician.  Every country has different electrical codes.  And just because you "Can", do something theoretically, doesn't mean you can do it in your country.  I am pretty positive the electrician won't say, well if you heard it on the internet, then I will wire it that way.
25  Alternate cryptocurrencies / Announcements (Altcoins) / Re: [ANN][PRE-ICO] AcademyCoin - Education Powered By Blockchain on: October 21, 2017, 06:14:05 AM
Partnering with platforms/businesses directly in 2018 to help their community of content creators and educators develop sustainable income will be a huge deal for both the crypto space and creators.

Currently, no.
We have seen a few awesome education companies launch courses and learning materials who would highly benefit from the AC blockchain. In our opinion, there needs to be more education focused companies in the space.
After seeing all the initial success of ACAD with content creators we do expect more companies to come into the space this quarter.

Is there any competition that you know of in the crypto-related space you are looking to operate in?
Ok but couldn't you even in any way integrate with other companies or does that not make any sense from a competitive perspective?
26  Alternate cryptocurrencies / Announcements (Altcoins) / Re: [ANN][ICO] AcademyCoin - The Currency For Creators on: October 21, 2017, 06:08:30 AM
Thanks so much for the support szzc895l! The AC blockchain is going to help online content creators and educators develop sustainable monthly income.

Feel free to DM us on Slack with any question  Grin

Is one of the world's greatest professional educators, but many times their income is low, there is a problem, if the encrypted currency allows them to improve the situation, may be a change, they can published article on the blockchain,  accept the cryptocurrency of payment, I think it would be a perfect solution.

I have been a miner and trader since 2013.  Although as time goes on, I am mining less and less.  Trading is where the money is.  Mining is not really about making money as it is about having fun and trying to break even.

As for what to research.  Read what the coins goal is and if they have a business case/business blueprint.  Should all be listed in the white pages.  I have seen to many coins created with nothing more than a developer saying, I created this coin to purchase a niche market item.  They don't have a business plan, don't have any really push to market their coin to actually be used to purchased whatever they said they made the coin for.  Why anyone would buy and back these types of coins is beyond me.  Even if they did manage to take off, I can't see wanting to go buy groceries and need a separate wallet and coins for the Corn, the Bread and the Bacon.

Other coins have nothing going for them than a meme or are made as jokes.  Think Doge coin ect.  These can become really popular, but after the joke wears off, they are kind of thin.

There are many coins out there, such as Academy Coin ( I am biased with that one, since I am part of the team), or coins like Sia Coin, where the developers actually have a business model and a well structured time line in their white papers and these companies should stand out from others when you look into them.   I am not telling you to buy Academy Coin or Sia Coin, just to look up the white paper so you can see the types of things you should look for in terms of finding a coin to invest in.
28  Other / Beginners & Help / Re: tRING TO GET INTO BITCOIN on: October 19, 2017, 03:33:36 AM
I agree.  If you are just getting into Bitcoins.  Mining is the furthest thing you will want to do.  Trading is where all the money is to be made.  Sure the "idea" of printing your own money seems great.  But when you consider you need to purchase a machine that costs a few thousand dollars, and then watch it sucks down thousands of watts of power and is on 24/7 and throwing heat like crazy to make you $20 a day, and you can see it's not worth it.  To add to it, as more and more people jump in, you actually make less and less so on average if you break even mining you are doing pretty good.
29  Other / Beginners & Help / Re: Can it be true ? on: October 19, 2017, 03:26:14 AM
For the most part unless you are using a really REALLY bad exchange the only time you should be taking a large hit like 6% is if you are going from Fiat to BTC originally, or taking back out to Fiat currency.  Aside from that, so long as you are remaining in the Cryptocurrency world, you shouldn't be hit with much aside form transfer fees and smallish trading fees.

That being said, BTC is not meant to be traded in small amounts.  Or yes the fees will eat you alive.
30  Alternate cryptocurrencies / Altcoin Discussion / Re: Best crypto coin for the marijuana business sector on: October 18, 2017, 03:29:16 PM
I can say I don't have any experience in this sector, but I would assume Bitcoin would be the most prominent of all the coins accepted.  Sure a person could take Potcoin or any other of the drug related coins out there, but in all reality, they would all still be converted into BTC to then be traded into Fiat, so not really sure the point.

Best thing to ask, are you going into the business, or looking to buy?  If you are looking to buy, then it would be up to whoever you are buying from which coins they would take.  Why buy a pile of Potcoins if the person you are dealing with won't take them?   If you are looking to set up a business, then you are in a different boat.  I would almost suggest one of the new anon coins, although BTC will still be the easiest to deal with.
31  Other / Beginners & Help / Re: Whens all bitcoin going to be mined? on: October 17, 2017, 10:44:39 PM
Hello, when do you guys think all the bitcoins will be mined?

The total number of bitcoin to be ever produced is 21,000, 000 and due to my research the current total number of bitcoin left to mine is 4,375,400 btcoins and we're to reach the 21,000,000 bitcoins in the year 2050.

You are missing the most important step in your calculations.  Every 210,000 blocks the mining reward halves.

As for the idea that like money, Bitcoin will keep circulating, and increasing.  Nope that is the very essence of Bitcoin.  A finite amount of coins, which keeps it from inflation.  In essence BTC is set to increase in value do to the fact it has a limited number of coins possible.  Bitcoin will continue to be mined after all the blocks have been mined though, as the miners will be working off transaction fees.

Hello, when do you guys think all the bitcoins will be mined?

I think bitcoin will not all be mined, it is impossible. Because bitcoin is like money, and money just circulates around, and I think the same principle applies in bitcoin. So, we don't have to worry because it will not be drained at all.

BTC will eventually all be mined.  The mining rewards halve at a pre-determined rate.  Once all the coins have eventually been mined, the miners will then be mining solely on transaction fees, which as long as the coin is being used on a regular basis will be enough to keep it alive.
33  Other / Beginners & Help / Re: Whens all bitcoin going to be mined? on: October 17, 2017, 05:35:19 PM
You have it wrong.

Difficulty does not automatically increase over time.  And tt also won't be mined years in advance because there are more people mining, or because computing power has gone up dramatically.  And last coin won't take 100 years to mine.

Mining is just a game created to try to ensure the same person or entity doesn't get multiple blocks in a row.  With a coin like BTC, after every 2016 blocks, it will automatically re-adjust the difficulty based on the previous block times to try to retarget mining at 10 minutes.   Different coins have different numbers of blocks before retarget, and different block times they retarget for.

The only time a coin does run into a problem where it would take 100 years per block is when you have ALOT of people mining a coin, and then jump to a different coin all in a short period of time, leaving a high difficulty, and possibly a log way to retarget.   When this happens, usually the majority of people remaining will also leave, as they aren't getting anything hashing for days/months per block, and the coin usually dies.  Is a common problem that can occur with large pools that mine small coins based on profitability, that drive up difficulty, then when that coin is no longer in the profitability target it jumps to a new coin, leaving the previous coin a wreck.

May I ask who on the team is in charge of answering questions on this bitcointalk thread?

It's already been answered, but I posted the original Pre-ICO message, but after the initial response we decided it would be best to make the academycoin account to allow the team to answer any questions.  Since that account is more actively watched, it is also the best account to forward any messages to regarding wanting to provide translations for the project ect.
35  Alternate cryptocurrencies / Altcoin Discussion / Re: Why is Gridcoin not a major coin? on: October 17, 2017, 04:43:00 PM
While not quite Gridcoin, as I haven't followed that one closely.  I actively "mine" Curecoins, which is GridCoins alternative in Folding@home instead of BOINC.  While the coin itself isn't starting the world on fire price wise.  The Curecoin team has surpassed all the other teams and is currently the #1 folding team in the world.  I prefer Folding@home, as it is focused primarily on finding cures for diseases.  BOINC seems to have way to many offshoots, both projects are great though, and I have folded for both in the past.
36  Alternate cryptocurrencies / Altcoin Discussion / Re: Should I do this? How? on: October 11, 2017, 07:22:41 PM
I don't quite understand your game plan.  You want $1 million to create tokens for a cryptocurrency that you will burn, as you don't want to create your own currency, but you want your cafe to accept this new cryptocurrency?

I also found this.  https://themerkle.com/popular-boston-based-coffee-chain-and-wholesaler-accepts-bitcoin/  So you already have coffee shops in Boston that accept cryptocurrency.
37  Alternate cryptocurrencies / Mining (Altcoins) / Re: Obelisk Asic owner on: October 11, 2017, 07:12:03 PM
Just wondering what type of info would you share on the site, and why?  You could just have a post here in the mining section.  Is this to sell your machines?  Or to try to talk more people into buying them?  My guess is you wouldn't want more people buying them, as that lowers the amount you would make.
38  Alternate cryptocurrencies / Altcoin Discussion / Re: Why people try to create their own coins? on: October 11, 2017, 12:41:19 AM
For the most part if they are just copying a coin and launching it its for easy money and/or fame.  Not "famous", just their own sense of fame.

Aside from that some people actually have a vision and a business plan and want to implement it.  Usually you can tell the difference with a little bit of research.  If they have a business plan and a business goal, like AcademyCoin, SiaCoin and a bunch of other coins, their goals are usually set out in their whitepapers.  If they say I created Potato Coin ect since there isn't enough coins to buy potatoes, those are the ones you stay far away from.
39  Alternate cryptocurrencies / Altcoin Discussion / Re: Mining on Mobile Phone on: October 05, 2017, 02:43:17 PM
Would be a great idea.  Someone would have to figure out some way of keeping it to only be used on mobile phones.  Not an algorithm calculating away and using your mobile devices battery.  Probably like proof of existence.  The new PoE  lol

Not sure how many are aware, but the mining horsepower is NOT going towards keeping a coin secure.  All the billions of Kilowatts of power used hashing for BTC is only there to play a random number game.  The only actual thing Work part of Mining involves is to try to make sure the same person/entity doesn't get a certain number of blocks in a row that are needed to confirm a change in that blockchain.  Nothing more.  Of course if this mobile phone algorithm went big, there would be people out buying every used phone on the market and some people would have 50,000 phones sitting in a room.  Nothing ever changes.

Most of them look like false positives but we are getting the team to look into the matter before we put the link to the Windows Wallet back on this announcement.  Guessing you are getting the wallet via our Website link, from which we haven't removed the link yet.  I will advise the team to get that resolved as well while we wait for the ok to go ahead and roll out the Windows Wallet.
