21  Bitcoin / Development & Technical Discussion / Re: JavaScript library for cryptocurrency address validation on: September 04, 2018, 02:33:58 PM
How many currencies are we talking about? If it's not that many, you could probably just write your own library. The checksum or equivalent for most cryptos is not that complicated.
22  Bitcoin / Development & Technical Discussion / Re: Is colored coins still in use? on: September 04, 2018, 02:31:26 PM
Most people have stopped using colored coins because ERC20 tokens are so much cheaper to use and easier to handle. A while ago, STORJ was using a counterparty token but then switched to an ERC20 token because of how much easier/cheaper it was.
23  Bitcoin / Development & Technical Discussion / Re: Total Number of full nodes operating. Less than 10k. on: September 04, 2018, 02:30:12 PM
There are only 9624 full nodes operating right now.
I had no idea that the number was so low.
...
Unfortunately, I had to give up, because my old 2010 notebook could not handle 200Gb of space.

That's the answer. Most people just don't want to go through the setup required, and those that do don't always have the spare resources to allocate 24/7 to running a node.
24  Bitcoin / Project Development / Re: [ANN] website that accepts MAINNET/TESTNET lightning payments: unblur images on: September 04, 2018, 01:38:10 PM
I remember seeing a website like this a few years ago that had you guess what was in the image. Each guess cost an amount, but you won a larger amount if you guessed right. Over time, the image would become more unblurred, making it easier to guess. This reminded me of that.

Nice work!
25  Bitcoin / Development & Technical Discussion / Re: Is it possible to have a QR code that generates a different address every scan? on: July 21, 2018, 12:39:13 AM
Isn't a "stealth address" or a "payment code" (BIP 47) exactly what the OP wants?

Here's a little article about payment codes.

However BIP47 seems to require an additional "notification transaction" (@RGBkey already mentioned "cost and time", although I think it should be possible to automate everything) so the fee would be doubled. It's one per customer, so it would be fine if you re-visit the store or restaurant every now and then, but not if it's an one-time payment.

Yeah, there's a few reasons BIP 47 didn't take off. Clever idea, but not really useful enough given the trade offs.

Couldn't this (a static payment identifier for face to face businesses) be done using a Lightning network node name? I think so. Much more appropriate for this use case in other ways too.

I don't know if stealth addresses had this problem, too. And don't ask me about LN compatibility ...

Using the lightning network, you could generate new payment request QRs for each payment and keep privacy, but it would require users being able to use the LN.
26  Bitcoin / Development & Technical Discussion / Re: Change Mobile Phones with Wallets on: July 19, 2018, 09:36:50 PM
Better to make a backup of your application and then you can move your data with sd card i don't know if this trick can work or not check this link hope it can helps you https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=T1aBHPGCwr4.
Moving the data to the SD card isn't a way to move the app's sensitive data (like passwords or saves for games) at all.
It just moves the app's resources. In an instance that the SD card was removed, most apps will keep the user's data in the internal data storage and when the user reinstall the app, his data may still be intact.

Even using rooted apps will not do and I doubt there's a possible app for that.
Yes it's far fetched but still possible if the wallet app isn't password/passphrase protected. (can the user create an unencrypted coinomi wallet?)
But if a rooted phone with a loaded wallet was stolen, there is a great chance for the thief to get the coin by flashing a customized recovery mode that's readily available for geeky users, still, an encrypted wallet will be a challenge/impossible to steal.
Agreed, a simple reset factory settings (wipe user data) is safe enough with regards to Coinomy and other encrypted mobile wallets.

@worldtraveller321 In addition to the multiple replies of restoring via SEED, if in case your phone was rooted,
you can use Titanium Backup or any related superuser backup app which can backup the whole app including the app data from the root directory (app settings, accounts and everything) then restore it in a different (also) rooted android phone.

How many people do you actually know with rooted phones? And not to label OP, but I don't see someone that can root their phone also asking questions about how to move their wallets between phones
27  Bitcoin / Development & Technical Discussion / Re: Is it possible to have a QR code that generates a different address every scan? on: July 16, 2018, 10:40:57 PM
An extended public key could be used to generate an unlimited number of addresses, but there would still need to be some coordination between the sending wallet and the receiving wallet. You might as well provide a unique address for every customer. It is easy enough to print one on the receipt or on a screen.

This would work, but I don't think OP is looking for this answer because in this situation, all the customers would be able to see all of the addresses ever used with it, removing the privacy.
28  Bitcoin / Hardware wallets / Re: Help! Ledger nano s not show my bitcoins on: July 13, 2018, 12:08:26 AM
...

Although, why people kept using the "sign message" dropdown instead of "Receive" tab to get an address is a complete mystery to me... If you want to get a "receive address", surely it makes more sense to click "receive"? Huh Roll Eyes

I guess people are out to destroy any means that wallet developers build to help them increase their own privacy.
29  Bitcoin / Development & Technical Discussion / Re: Is it possible to have a QR code that generates a different address every scan? on: July 13, 2018, 12:06:14 AM
It's possible but not likely. They could do something like Samourai Wallet did by using BIP 47. That way, individual customers could create their own address chain with the merchant. However it would be cost and time prohibitive, and stop people that did not have phone wallets that supported it.

Much more easy is just a QR on a screen that changes when that address receives money.
30  Bitcoin / Hardware wallets / Re: Help! Ledger nano s not show my bitcoins on: July 12, 2018, 12:20:05 AM
It's because segwit addresses cannot sign messages.
Electrum signs , but it's nonstandard and other wallets do not recognize it.

Only legacy addresses signs, and you are using a segwit walleton ledger live.

You need to somehow create a legacy Wallet on ledger live. Maybe if you click create new account and add another btc wallet and Mark as legacy. I didn't tried to do this but it may work.

As I said, I think you should work on chrome app or Electrum for now.

Your solution works. If i use ledger chrome app and legacy chain and send bitcoin to it, then i can import that address on ledger live software. As i read on redit the legacy is not supported in this version of ledger live, maybe they will implement in next version.

It's possible they might add support for people with money on legacy addresses, but I hope they don't re-add the ability to receive money at legacy addresses. There's almost no benefit to using them now.

Your link seems to be broken. Do you have a mirror available?

Yes, his link seems to be broken. A google search gives a similar link:

http://em.edu.mx/assets/files/mb18.pdf

which is a poor attempt to introduce a Multidimensional Blockchain. It makes no sense, whatsoever.

Thanks.

Quote
This means that the core hashes and calculations at its core are based on only one dimension: time. But having only one dimension has shown that it is weak for virtual currencies stored in exchanges and wallets. Eachtime more currencies are stolen from Exchanges, and users lost wallets and their money.

This is not a fault of any cryptocurrency, but of the exchange. Not properly securing their service has no relation to the security of a cryptocurrency.

The rest of your paper is just more nonsense based on the idea that the security in a blockchain is ever provided by a timestamp. I can't think of a single cryptocurrency where that is the case. The security comes from transactions included in blocks, backed by the hashing power of the entire Bitcoin network.

If you would like to understand more about how Bitcoin actually works, I highly suggest you read the original Bitcoin whitepaper. https://bitcoin.org/bitcoin.pdf
32  Bitcoin / Hardware wallets / Re: New Ledger native desktop app to be released on July 9th, 2018 on: July 11, 2018, 09:32:17 PM
Ok, I understand now. By the way, a little off-topic but Ledger sold +1 million wallets in 2017, It's quite impressive, I couldn't imagine such results already. Samsung, Siemens and Google’s ventures are starting to get interested in the company. (surely with funding, I hope it's going to sell to them lol)

I think their marketing must be good. I've seen friends I never expected to own crypto with these, some people just keep it on their keychain. (Personally I would never carry one around with me, that's just painting a huge target on your back).

Bitcointalk doesn't censor anything that doesn't break the forum rules. Even if you're wrong, you can generally still post here.
34  Bitcoin / Hardware wallets / Re: Help! Ledger nano s not show my bitcoins on: July 11, 2018, 01:32:16 AM
Type your address at blockchain.com website

Check if the balance is correct there.

If the transfered value does not show on blockchain.com, you didn't receive it.

You can also use Electrum wallet, it works well with nano s.

Is confirmed already on blockchain. Has 28 confirmation but still not showing on ledger. I tried also electrum and not show balance.

I will contact ledger support later when will be online.

Anyone know any solution?

Double check the address, but you hopefully did that when you clicked the receive button on the UI

Yes, I know and agree the user interface is not the most important. I was just expecting something better looking and currently, I prefer the old interface. At least we can get rid of the browser extension. I am curious to know, anyone knows why they never built an extension for Firefox?
Probably because Chrome apps can run "more standalone". There are Chrome extensions and Chrome apps. With it, you could access the Ledger apps without directly opening your browser, while in Firefox, the wallet would have to be "built-in" in the browser (like your regular Adblock that opens in a little window when you click at their icon next to the URL bar).
Also I'm not sure if Firefox allows extensions to communicate over USB ports like Chrome apps did, which is essential for them.

Hey Ethan,

I noticed that when 2FA is required to exchange coins, typing in the 2FA code and then hitting enter doesn't trigger anything, you've got to click on the button. Do you think you could add a listener for that?
37  Bitcoin / Hardware wallets / Re: New Ledger native desktop app to be released on July 9th, 2018 on: July 09, 2018, 09:31:06 PM
I prefer the new one. (well, there's no accounting for taste...)

Also, having an all-in-one dashboard is what matters the most (at least for me).
https://imgur.com/a/0pagvBc

Is it really the interface? I laughed when I saw it  Cheesy Cheesy Cheesy
Sorry but the user interface is ugly, there is nothing special, it even looks like an alpha version  Cheesy It made me think about something done with Bootstrap.
I prefer the old design by far.

I like the new one as well. I don't see anything wrong with that flat, clean style. That kind of style is everywhere these days too. I prefer this to something that's a lot more busy.

EDIT:
Seems that they've released it, got this link from their Twitter page: https://www.ledgerwallet.com/live

I find it strange that they put a link to the legacy Chrome apps on that page, considering that Chrome apps won't be alive for much longer, and they could just put those on a separate download page.

EDIT: Since they're not listed on the download page, here are the checksums/hashes for the Windows binary

T-1 day can't wait. I am also hoping they support more currencies asap.
Initially, they will only support the already supported coins (28 cryptocurrencies).

I compiled the wallet myself and it's looking dope.

39  Bitcoin / Bitcoin Discussion / Re: Bitcoin Core 0.16.1 Released on: July 07, 2018, 06:39:20 PM
How do I start the RPC server for a solo mining?
With the current config is not work, the TCP port does not open.
Code:
daemon=1
server=1
listen=1
rpcuser=user
rpcpassword=pass
rpcallowip=192.168.1.105
rpcport=9999

With the command line keys too.

Solo mining has not been profitable for a very long time. You will only waste electricity and decrease the life of your hardware by solo CPU mining.

If you're using core as a node to connect ASICs however, "port" will control which port is used for node connections. I'm not sure whether or not you're looking for that however. Could you provide more information?
40  Bitcoin / Development & Technical Discussion / Re: Change Mobile Phones with Wallets on: July 07, 2018, 06:35:45 PM
Looks like with Coinomi you need to export your secret seed. I would imagine the other apps have a similar process. If you delete the app before you export this seed, you will lose your money.

You should always have backups of your wallets, even your phone wallets. That backup is the same information you need to access the same wallet on another phone. Search for the name of your wallet and "backup" or "restore" to find specific procedures.
