Hi ethan_nx. I heard that Yolodice has Segwit enabled and I would like to know what your thoughts and experiences are in setting it up. I also want to ask how much in fees do you or your users pay when they withdraw from your site and how much cheaper are they compared to legacy transactions?

Nitrogen's solution to the problem is charging their users with $20 per withdrawal which is laughable. As one of the biggest gambling sites, they should be leading Segwit adoption in the community.

Segwit helps a bit, but only "a bit". I cannot remember the exact calculation of transaction weight for segwit/non-segwit transaction, but using Segwit addresses in our wallet help us save ~ 30% in fees. In fact it's less than nothing, because the fact that the blocks are full and network fees are skyrocketing increases fees by 1000% for everyone for most of the time.

So YES: Segwit slightly helps us solve the problem that is the result of lack of scaling.
And NO: Segwit alone does NOT fix Bitcoin scaling issues and high fees.

Contrary to the common belief, Segwit solves nothing right now. It helps mitigate high fees in certain situations. Even if every transaction right now was a Segwit transaction, it would not solve the scaling problem.

Ethan

Cheers,
Ethan
Everything but the signatures are counted as normal (1 byte = 1 weight unit) and signatures are counted at 1/4 (4 bytes of signature = 1 weight unit)
342  Bitcoin / Bitcoin Technical Support / Re: Help with choosing best fee on: December 29, 2017, 03:17:38 AM
Unfortunately the fee per byte hasn't dropped below 100 satoshis in a while. I would check to see if you have any very small inputs that might be just increasing the size of your transaction. Inputs so small that they cost more in fees than they're worth. You need to make a very large transaction, and that just isn't cheap anymore, sorry. If you don't want to spend that much money, your best bet is to wait.

And if you can, start accepting donations on a segwit address. The fees for you to send out of segwit addresses are cheaper.

Ethan,

If you're not planning on or willing to implement support for the lightning network after a stable release is available, I would be willing to write a script to allow users to deposit and withdraw from the site using lightning network transactions. I think this kind of support would be much better implemented in the site, but I'm eager to move forward with the technology. If you're interested, the proposed program would be open-source and could be run by me, you, or anybody else.

Unfortunately Bitcoin transactions are final. There is no way to get your money back. You will hardly be able to do anything with just an IP, especially if it's a VPN.
345  Bitcoin / Hardware wallets / Re: Is Ledger Nano S REALLY SAFE ?? Best Hardware Wallet ? on: December 17, 2017, 03:46:44 AM
Okay let me just get this confirmed.  If i get a nano ledger s and then transfer my btc from electrum to nano ledger.  Then my nano ledger no longer works or something like that, i would just have to put that 24 word seed from nano ledger and enter that into electrum wallet and it will be recovered?  Thus its like if i needed to restore electrum again on the same computer or new computer?  I want to make sure of this because i know i would not be able to get a nano ledger s again if the initial one has issues and malfunctions etc.

Yes, because the Nano S uses the BIP39 standard, it is accepted by other wallets. You will be fine. At the very least you can find a tool online to help you recover your wallet.
346  Bitcoin / Hardware wallets / Re: Are Hardware Wallets to be trusted? on: December 17, 2017, 01:25:31 AM
Addendum: I haven't found the word list yet, but I assume it is not divisible by 10 or 100. With that in mind: to keep the chances of hitting a word as even as possible, it may be prudent to use different dice (Your local D&D dealer can help you out).
You mean the BIP39 wordlist? https://github.com/bitcoin/bips/blob/master/bip-0039/english.txt

Woohoo, yes, thanks Smiley

Ok, looks like the magic number 8 is the way to go. There are 8-sided dice, so that shouldn't be a problem… oh, and a 4-sided die at the end.

Alternatively, 16-sided die, leaves a rest of 8, so a 8-sided die for the finish. Saves one round, too.
16 pages with 128 words per page, 16 lines with 8 words per line. First, roll the page, then the line, then the word. Repeat 23 times.

Are the keys checksumed, though? This would mean that not every combination automatically works…

It doesn't look like it to me. It seems the whole phrase is just hashed together with some salt (the string "mnemonic" plus your passphrase, if you have one), which means there's no checksum. You should be able to use dice to generate a valid BIP39 phrase by using the wordlist. Source.
347  Bitcoin / Hardware wallets / Re: Is Ledger Nano S REALLY SAFE ?? Best Hardware Wallet ? on: December 17, 2017, 01:22:36 AM

A nano s isn't a backup. Its a hardware wallet which can be used for everyday payments.
The 24 word seed phrase is the backup of your private-/public keys. This phrase can be imported into any BIP39/44 compatible wallet to 'restore your coins'.

Aren't there hardware wallets with backup of your keys/seeds?

Yes, like this one: https://www.ledgerwallet.com/products/ledger-cryptosteel

What happens if your ledger nano s no longer works etc?  Could you restore your wallet on a computer if you cannot get another nano ledger s?

You have a buy another one. They don't provide their algorithm to derivate their seed into a valid BTC (or another coin) address.

This is wrong. Ledger uses the BIP 39 standard. You can recover it with a tool like this: https://iancoleman.io/bip39/
Please don't spread misinformation.

Two new commands have been added to AM

!mempool displays some statistical information about the fees in the mempool
!block displays some simple info about the most recent block

I hope to improve these commands and add more functionality later.
349  Economy / Gambling / Re: A Q for Bitcoin casino reps. Are your profits affected by high transaction fees? on: December 16, 2017, 04:50:01 AM
Segwit is a change operators can make that allows them to continue to use Bitcoin with full backwards compatibility but pay less in fees. Altcoins aren't really a solution to a user base that wants to use Bitcoin.

I'm personally not a fan of services that don't use Segwit yet but still charge their users high withdraw fees.
350  Bitcoin / Hardware wallets / Re: Ledger Nano S - launch on: December 16, 2017, 04:44:39 AM
How do you install this app on a Mac using Google Chrome browser?  It just says "Launch App"

Then you already have it installed. The app is a webpage that runs on your computer that is allowed to access your ledger device through the USB port. You are not visiting a webpage hosted by someone else, but instead visiting an internal webpage you have downloaded. It is however able to be updated by the ledger team, but someone would have to compromise their chrome web store key to be able to do that. And even if they did, an attacker would not be able to steal your balance because you have to manually approve your transactions on your device.
351  Bitcoin / Hardware wallets / Re: Ledger Nano S - launch on: December 16, 2017, 01:08:22 AM
Is that how you've been doing it? You're supposed to install the Chrome app, which you can then launch from the apps menu on chrome, or you can make a shortcut directly to it on your desktop after installing it.

https://www.ledgerwallet.com/apps/ripple
https://chrome.google.com/webstore/detail/ledger-manager/beimhnaefocolcplfimocfiaiefpkgbf

Also it doesn't matter if the website gets hacked, the benefit of using the ledger is that you have to physically confirm each transaction with the buttons and the screen. You can never lose money you didn't explicitly tell it to send.

I think I'm going to give up on investing in casino bankroll
It always turn negative Sad

Currently around 0.02BTC negative, same a couple of weeks ago (different casinos profitable, different casinos unprofitable)..
I've started aftering following btcmillionaire and after I've seen his 1%/week average, I hoped for a 3%/month profit
But hell no.
Seems like I'm losing each and every fucking time  Cry
Except for Crypto-Games, they haven't been negative on me yet.
Investing in casino is I think a long term activity, we have to understand that casino always win in the long run
so we should not count the results early. If I remember it right, we have a thread here where OP experiment investing in casino
and in overall he is profitable, that is because he diversified his investment.
This is the correct way to think about it. Short term variance can cause you to lose money but the odds still play in your favor.

There is no guaranty that all casino bankroll investments will give profits in the long run.

Of course there is no guarantee. But over a long period of time, the odds are on your favor.
353  Bitcoin / Hardware wallets / Re: Are Hardware Wallets to be trusted? on: December 15, 2017, 01:34:11 AM
This is a question I asked myself recently as well. And refering to open source code doesn't completely solve the question, because the main attack vector I see, if a hardware wallet manufacturer would want to access customers funds, would be a bad random number generator.

I don't know how trezor and ledger generate their privkeys, though. Does anybody have any insight in that?

What we really need is open source hardware. Devices that people can assemble themselves. Unfortunately the skill required to do something like this would be much higher than the average cryptocurrency enthusiast.
354  Economy / Service Discussion / Re: NiceHash Hacked: $62 Million Stolen? on: December 15, 2017, 01:30:29 AM
I am very sure recovery would really be hard on stolen funds and the thing they can do as of now is to track such movement of those coins but I do believe those coins would sit for a while on what wallet or either be gradually be deposited to other wallet by the use of mixers. Leaving out trails is the main mission of the hacker for sure.

I doubt that these coins will end up getting deposited or mixed since it may result in these coins getting seized once deposit has confirmed. The entities behind it know very well how things work, and will likely end up setting up a brand new service where people will end up getting these tainted coins in the long term. It's basically like how there nowadays are thousands and thousands of people having tainted MtGox coins that we're distributed through BTC-E during their last years. One way or another, these coins will end up being the best thing the con artist behind this inside job have ever experienced. Something that happened successfully once, will likely be reason to give it another go for a second attempt.

This is true. People keep proposing a "coin blacklist" but it's not feasible. There's so many ways now to break the chain of transactions, through mixers or altcoins like monero, that so many innocent, normal people would end up with "tainted" coins and would be told they can't spend them because they're stolen. This would hurt the fungibility of Bitcoin, and it's why it's never happened.
355  Alternate cryptocurrencies / Altcoin Discussion / Re: Segwit 2x Activation on: December 15, 2017, 01:26:41 AM
It won't be activated, at least not in any substantial manner, because it was cancelled. Sorry to hear that you lost money but you should have done more research into what you were investing in.

357  Economy / Service Discussion / Re: Bitcoin casinos on: December 14, 2017, 05:02:24 AM
You can't "earn" Bitcoins by wagering in casinos. You will lose money. Sure, in the short term you can get lucky and end up with more than you started, but you will lose eventually. That's why casinos exist, to make money (your money).

If you're actually interested in earning Bitcoin, I suggest looking for people that are willing to pay people for tasks in Bitcoin.
358  Economy / Gambling / Re: Investing in btc casinos on: December 14, 2017, 05:00:29 AM
Investing money is like gambling , it's either you earn a lot or loss all the profit. However we need to trust and be confident in your decisions to earn more. The more you invest the more you have the chance to earn a lot. In addition try to research first what are the things to remember and background check is necessary.

Investing money incurs risk like gambling, but when you invest the odds are in your favor. There's a big difference.

How can invest can be in our favor? We can't control this thing right, there is always player that control it, like big whale when they win big and run away with a lot of cash and others that play slowly get their money back. There is so many kinds of players right there so how can this be profitable to us?
The expected value is in your favor. Over long periods of time, you're expected to make money because the odds are skewed towards the house, and you're on the side of the house.

It's hard for me to realize we've been online for a year now. It passed so quickly! But I am really glad we made it and what we achieved in this year is just awesome.

Running a Bitcoin dice site has been much harder than I thought, but it's been a great experience. I am really, really glad we decided to build YOLOdice and make it our full-time "job".

A big "THANK YOU" to all our players, investors, friends, supporteds, moderators, bug-hunters - it's been a pleasure.

We have great plans for the upcoming months and we definitely want to keep making YD a higly-trusted Bitcoin site!

Cheers!
Ethan

Thanks to you too Ethan, few people have been as fast, transparent and innovative as you. Give yourself a pat on the back.

EDIT: Because I was bored, here's the most used commands on AM from the past 60 days:

360  Bitcoin / Hardware wallets / Re: 6 Apps on Ledger Nano S ?!? on: December 12, 2017, 10:20:34 PM
I don't know for certain but I believe it's because certain apps take up more/less space, and the ledger has a fixed amount of memory, not on the number of apps it can hold.
