201  Alternate cryptocurrencies / Announcements (Altcoins) / Re: NEM Official Moderated Thread [Updates & Discussion][Civilized Discussion] on: June 25, 2014, 04:25:07 PM
He's pretty much the exact opposite of a troll. Never posts and just works on making NEM better behind the scenes. If I'm not mistaken, he is responsible for making the NCC look so damn sexy!
My suggestion to Loi.Tran, take the .ai file from here: https://trello.com/c/42ucSEVL/116-interim-logo-kit , and make the logo better (if ya got the time). I personally don't think the logo is too bad, but I do think the border is a bit odd though.
This time I'm quite busy. Reason why I didn't start build some more logos because I find the way to the final logo seems not very clear, and I cannot spend my effort without a specific goal. Until we're planning for a logo contest & official public vote, I will be ready for that.
loi.tranquang mate, could you please post your logo(s) again? Smiley which ones are yours? https://www.flickr.com/photos/115246188@N06/

Also it seems clear that a majority (of those who posted) would like to have a logo voting.
My logos are not in that list. Not sure whether I can post them here until someone confirm me on this. I was not frequently active in bitcointalk.

You should be able to include an image that's online by just pasting it into a post, and then surrounding it by an img tag, which is in the top left corner when creating a post. You might not be able to do this because of your low post count, but I am not very sure.

Development Recommendation for future-proofing NEM security:

I'd like to recommend two important security features for NEM:

1. MINIMUM pass phrase char threshold enforced by client (i.e. from day 1 you CANNOT use a passphrase less than 20 chars – I feel this was a major omission in NXT's launch and now incomplex passphrases are still allowed due to grandfathering.. Many accounts have been brute forced, and new users are still allowed to use incomplex passphrases)

2. OPTIONAL two-factor authentication: On the login screen there's a button for 'Create High-Security Account'. When clicked:
   A. The client generates a file akin to a wallet.dat with a long private key
   B. The user is prompted to enter a passphrase
RESULT: Account can only be accessed when BOTH of these are used in conjunction. User will need to backup their .dat file (there should be clear messaging on this). If a hacker steals the .dat file, they still need the passphrase. If a hacker guesses their passphrase, they still need the .dat file. Effectivley this may be the same as having a long random string and a user-dertimed text as the passphrase, but it would at least simplify the entry by automating the long random string via the .dat file.. Perhaps it would be ideal for this to be some sort of dual-key mechanism, though I lack the background to really speak to the ideal implementation.

Please consider this / forward it on to Devs.

Honestly I'd be suprised if these aren't already planned to be implemented, but if it is not, I agree 2 factor authentication and passphrase limitations should be included by launch (not alpha).

When will NEM stakes be released?
Hey NEM stakes can be claimed for 2 weeks or so already if you're on the stakeholder list. I bought myself 0.5 Smiley

I'm the designer who made the logo with green & yellow box & lots of other logo instances for NEM.
I'm not used to visit here & push a comment. But since I get noticed by official logo post in NEM Coin FB fan page, I were really surprised with the official logo.
It actually looks even worse than the one Makoto showed us couples of days ago. Actually, it's gonna break the professional image I did make up to NEM via my designs (Nem Landing Page, NCC, Investment Handout) recently Sad. I don't know when was the vote, how it happened and lots of people here seem also don't know that as well.
Not sure if this is trolling by brand new account, but
I like the current logo very much because it's clean, lively and futuristic like Nem. Sorry loi.tranquang, I didn't like your(??) or earlier logos as much as t his to be perfectly honest.
If you doubt me as a troller, here is my portfolio: https://www.behance.net/loitran

Hello

Is nice to see NEM stake value increase but I think this could also lead to another problem
that the stake could become so expensive that other people will be reluctant to join.
The question is what(how) can we do to increase NEM user base even more before the
complete release of the coin and the NEM stake becomes to expensive (valuable)?!

a trusted member of the nem community could issue nem stakes on the AE divisible by 100 rather than 10. the stakes coming from the stakes to be auctioned or elsewhere. come distribution the devs distribute the stakes as they would to those who claimed plus the stakes to the trusted member who would then distribute the coins to those who claim the stakes that they bought off him. main distributor(who ever is in control of stakes) > ~10 stakes > sub distributor sells on AE(amounts down to .01 of a stake all set to sell at the market price set by the main market) > buyers,

buyers(nxt payed for stakes) > sub distributor > main distibutor

there is no extra work created for main devs/distributor, as it would be passed on to the sub distributor. every one with out enough to buy .1 on main market could buy on the mini market.

thoughts?

I think that would be a great idea! You could call it little NEM stake, to avoid confusion?

Anyone can issue mini-tokens as long as he is credible. XCP anyone ?

Hey folks, this is an idea that I brought up about a week ago. I am still very interested in helping out with this project. https://trello.com/c/dkIspdzc/111-split-up-1-stake-into-100-micro-stakes
My idea is to just split 1 NEMstake into 100 miniNEMstakes, the only issue I can see is trust. I also don't think we should be bothering the devs with this, they obviously have a lot going on right now.
Even at this time having miniNEMstakes isn't a huge priority, but I think it will become a bigger issue if the stake price keeps rising like I expect.

Ok

Just thrpwing some words out there which could replace 'foraging'

-yielding
-reaping
-Harvesting ( as we all know)
-garnering

Or NEM could make up its own term as appose to using a dictionary term

for instance

'NEMering'

I like Nemering, might just call it 'Nemming'.

Some unique word would be my preference.
I like Nemering as well, +1 some unique word will be better...

I agree, using a unique word would be a great idea. I am not a huge fan of "harvesting, foraging". I think we should think more out-of-the-box.

Do the type of stakeholder you are affect your stake in any way? As in the three group types of stakeholders shown in the pie chart? Will they affect the stake in any way? Also just wondering how we will be given our stakes (those who are in it for the long haul and are not too fussed on selling up now). Apologies if these have been answered or seem obvious, I'm new to this entire thing and I am a bit confused. Keep up the solid work guys.

Being in group 1, 2, or 3 does not affect your stake in any way. The only thing that would effect your stake is if you got it over the asset exchange, if you get it over AE, you will have to wait a couple weeks after launch to get your stake.

I am not sure of the exact distribution method, I believe it is still under discussion.

Attention all Nemsters!

As far as I know the first transaction in history for a product or service in exchange for NEM has just happened.

I am awaiting product for an e-commerce site built specifically to sell NEM t-shirts. I had 15.

User gadsden76 was looking for a way to advertise NEM to his local crypto-currency group, he exchanged .1 NEMstake for a total of fifteen NEM t-shirts.

I will announce the website name where you can buy t-shirts as well once I was receive some more product.

You can view the transaction in the NXT blockchain here: http://nxtexplorer.com/nxt/nxt.cgi?action=2000&tra=16637682404186164403

Thanks,
EFFV Smiley
That's great! Grin
Yep, great news! I'm very curious to see the site.

I have been on the sidelines for a while, just came back to catch up with NEM, so much has changed...

I requested my stake from patmast3r is he still distributing these?

I want to spread the word about NEM with a local Bitcoin club that I take part in. I am trying to figure out a way to get them interested.

He is still distributing them.

Taken from: https://bitcointalk.org/index.php?topic=650505

When there is a minimum of 100 requests, Patmast3r will officially issue the token and send them to your accounts. Asset Ticker and Issuer account will be announced later when the tokens are issued. Thanks.
210  Alternate cryptocurrencies / Announcements (Altcoins) / Re: NEM Official Moderated Thread [Updates & Discussion][Civilized Discussion] on: June 18, 2014, 07:51:57 PM
I have already asked 3 times the same questions in different threads with no clear answers of what is happening and this is not helping the average Joe to get on board... People always redirect me to other discussions of NEM (much appreciated by the way) but why no one is giving me a straight answer without redirect me to some other thread?

So I will ask again...

1. If a buy a NEM stake from NXT AE what exactly do I need to do to claim my NEM coins and get on the stakeholders list and by when?

2. I understand that buying a NEM stake from AE I am buying a token but it is actually now controlled by UF who might run away and basically end up with an asset with no value?

Thanks

I hope this helps you out and puts your worries at ease:

1. You will never be put on the stakeholders list. With that said tokens purchased on nxt AE are completely valid, and can be redeemed for actual NEM after launch. Figuring out everyone that purchased a token and putting them on AE would just be way too much work for devs, and it really wouldn't help anything anyways. When it comes to claiming the NEM, the devs will give thorough instructions (the claiming of NEM won't happen for months)

2. Patmast3r is in control of the NEM assets, so there is no worry about him running away with the assets, I think he has proven his honesty by now.

I thought I would see more people talking about Halt and Catch Fire  Wink

How about Silicon Valley, that's one of the best shows I've seen in awhile.
Vice and Real Time on HBO are also pretty awesome.
Edit, forgot about John Oliver, HBO is killing it this year! And the don't even care if people bootleg their stuff, so check it out!
Louie is always good as well.
212  Alternate cryptocurrencies / Announcements (Altcoins) / Re: NEM Official Moderated Thread [Updates & Discussion][Civilized Discussion] on: June 18, 2014, 02:39:03 AM

Actually, i think the rationale behind alot of the "average joe" user goes a bit like this:

1. They read FUD in mainstream media which in often cases only reports on stories that are controversial or negative (on the subject of crypto's that is) - negativity is frequently good clickbait as people are more inclined to express outrage or negativity then they are praise. It's a human trait. (Although granted, Bitcoin deserves criticism in many respects, if it didn't, i wouldn't invest in non-PoW coins, however mainstream media tends to literally spread FUD when it deals with Cryptocurrency, largely through ignorance and a agenda, this leads to outright scorn, not criticism. )

2. The corresponding opinion as a result of mainstream media makes them uninterested or inclined to believe Crypto's are scams or unsafe - and in many respects, they're right. This forum is full to the brim of scamcoins. Even bitcoin, being still rather young, is volatile in terms of valuation -this makes it unsafe to stash away your hard earned savings/money in it.

With the above things in mind, NEM will likely struggle to make it into mainstream adoption unless it's able to market itself like Bitcoin did; on the allure of "money for nothing" or "mining". I for one think a few viral video's and some well placed, timed Facebook marketing is in order - but obviously on more honest and transparent principles.

The biggest thing going for NEM right now is it's rather large initial distribution - this gives it more security, and the more who already join in, the more secure it will become.

There's no way I could put it better than that, especially point #1. Someone in my family hits me up at least once a month saying "Sell all your Bitcoin now, did you read the latest news article". I then have to spend at least 10 minutes explaining to them what is really going on.
213  Alternate cryptocurrencies / Announcements (Altcoins) / Re: NEM Official Moderated Thread [Updates & Discussion][Civilized Discussion] on: June 18, 2014, 02:19:05 AM

Why wait? NEM has a strong community. Once the open alpha releases, the APIs will be made public shortly after. I hope the community can start building on top of NEM at that point while the core team is still focused on the core blockchain features.

Just wanted to make sure people saw this. I can't wait to see what people come up with before the launch.
I'm currently examining some other cryptos API for practice  Grin
214  Alternate cryptocurrencies / Announcements (Altcoins) / Re: NEM Official Moderated Thread [Updates & Discussion][Civilized Discussion] on: June 17, 2014, 08:24:18 PM

Edit: I think my point here is that I talk to a lot of people daily that don't quite get this whole "bitcoin" thing. When I explain things like frictionless transactions and native currency exchanges from buyer to seller their eyes light up and they say "yeah my brother has to wire money to his daughter in university over seas and it's such a total drag! that sounds great". Then give them a way to easily do that from their mobile, and they are hooked and they tell a friend and so on. So maybe while not trade shows (those people already get cryptos right?), we need some sort of community awareness thing. Maybe parents attending university orientations or something... put a booth up next to the Greek community and give them a QR code for the app in the app store Tongue.

The task we are charged with is helping people see the relevance to their lives. Why should I use this if I can just use the money in my pocket today? To show them this has use, and isn't just some funny Internet money. Libertarians get it, and underworld figures get it, and certainly the governments and banks get it. Everyone is fighting for the hearts and minds of the common man who ultimately is the one that decides what is to prevail. What useful functions can it serve for mere mortals? This is a cultural shift. People have to trust it. They can trust it when they can see how easy it is to move between fiat and nem. Banks and governments won't make that easy for us. Things like VirWox / SLL, Cryptsy, and the 10 other sites you need to jump through to move between the two is one of our big headaches. I know my mom would never be willing to deal with any of that. I don't think you can move to people using it exclusively until they feel at ease moving between what they do today and something new. I could be wrong.

I completely agree with this point. IMO Bitcoin would have reached way more people by now if the marketing stopped focusing on the tech side, and focused much more on the usability side.

A lot of people are happy letting banks hold onto their money simply because it's the most convenient option for them, once a crypto is proven to be as convenient as online banking, I think we will see a huge adoption rate (honestly there is no reason that it shouldn't be way more convenient than online banking, there's no BS signup and verification process with NEM).

i have some nem from the nxt exchange, now what do i do?

HODL

right, i got that,
but how do i claim my stake, my replies arn't being replied too
ibought from next exchange

It doesn't quite work like that. All you need to do is hold onto your stake, and after the official launch, you will trade your NEMtoken for NEM (1 token will equal aprox. 1,000,000NEM)

I think once we have cut the troll disease, our community should be able to evolve and bloom again in no time.

With luck! Some really good discussion was developing in the previous threads before the troll infestation. Hopefully this thread will be a haven for such discussion once more.

I'll start some light discussion: Should a NEM Mobile app for Android and iOS be a priority for development after completion of the V.1 blockchain?

I really would love to see mobile apps released on launch day. Are there any mobile devs here who could make this happen?

Yes, please, I will donate some NEM to that cause.
217  Alternate cryptocurrencies / Announcements (Altcoins) / Re: NEM Official Thread {Updates & Discussion} on: June 16, 2014, 10:05:24 PM

Dude at this point, you are so frustrated you actually advertise more for nem than any other person ever did... I will let you have fun since i'm quite sure it's just making more people aware of NEM.

Although i'm curious about why you are so angry at this community, I wish you all the luck with your trust issues and paranoia. In the meantime don't hesitate to continue helping the NEM community!

Bisous.

Yeah this could actually be awesome, he basically bumps this thread for us, and then if people really want to know what NEM is all about, we can just tell them to go to this thread:

news.nemcoin.com looks really promising !
Good job TauMon !

I could see that greyish-blue being part of our branding. It's really pleasing to the eye imho.

I think you have the wrong guy, it's made by crackerhead, right?

Great work crackerhead, though I would still change the colors a bit.  Grin

I agree that the color needs a bit of changing. I would go for a whitish/grey plain background. Need to establish some working parameters, i.e., need to agree on the logo and then go for a color scheme that blends in well with the color of the logo.

Our designer for NCC has gone with a green/orange look. It is what is used in the investor's handout: https://bitcointalk.org/index.php?topic=640772.0

Yeah it'd be cool to try the orange-green theme on the news page. I'd be interested to see how that looks.

I think green represents the eco-friendly ideals of the new economy we are trying to build and orange represents something new and high-tech.

I will give that color scheme a try, not tonight though, I'm way to tired to make those kind of decisions right now.  Grin

Working on a few more things. I agree the theme could be lightened up a bit.
