201  Economy / Speculation / Re: Wall Observer BTC/USD - Bitcoin price movement tracking & discussion on: February 25, 2017, 09:11:14 PM
ATH in price is only one side of the coin. the other is market cap.

in 2013 the market cap was ~12B at its peak, and litecoin was less than $100M.

today bitcoin is almost $19B, and the next 5 top coins have a combined $2B.

cryptocurrency as an entire sector is up 8 *BILLION* dollars, or ~66% since the 2013 peak.
202  Economy / Collectibles / Re: Casascius issues - Dollar Premium estimates - all in one place.... on: February 22, 2017, 07:43:05 PM
I thought Goat sold his 1000BTC bar for 1M?

Furthermore, the premium for the 25 BTC, 10 BTC and 5 BTC should be higher I think.

There is no set premium. These premiums depend on numerous factors that include but are not limited to: supply/demand, if the coin is graded, coin grade, coin condition, PGP key availability, price of BTC and etc.
The point is that there is no fixed premium per coin and trying to document it won't really yield accurate results.

Dont forget, date it what funded. A 2011 coin could be funded in 2013 making it just slightly less desirable opposed to a 2011 one.

1M for 1000 BTC would be a negative premium!

if i recall, that sale was in early 2014 when price was around $750/BTC
203  Bitcoin / Hardware wallets / Re: [ESHOP launched] Trezor: Bitcoin hardware wallet on: February 10, 2017, 01:11:36 AM
At what amount of BTC am I advised to invest into this hardware wallet? I understand there is an amount of BTC where after web wallets are difficult to trust. Also, I prefer divide my funds between web and HW wallets. So, what is the amount of funds when I am advised to consider investing into this? How much BTC did you have (if not private) when you bought your first HW wallet?

Thats like asking how many valuables you should have in your house before you buy a safe to put them in.

IMO the trezor is excellent. even if you only have 1 BTC, the trezor is a simple and secure way to store and spend it (or add more coins to in the future)

lol its not a device that you should run in your bedroom Wink

You can not just replace the fans, with quieter once because than it could be that the MXM cards are getting too hot but philipma1957 did some modification to get it a bit quieter but still not enough to run it in a room where you stay at the same time

pretty sure philip or someone else figured out how to control the fan speeds (though IIRC it needed a VRM and some DIY wiring) - but i think the default fans had gpu temps <60C, so they could probably be slowed down or replaced with slower fans and still keep the cards cool
205  Bitcoin / Hardware / Re: 55nm Bitfury chips - Direct 220V Project on: January 29, 2017, 03:58:42 AM
am i missing something - how are you turning your 230V AC into 230V DC for the chips?

^hes saying the buyer can claim the box with the same serial number arrived, but was empty.

ie: you ship me a gpu i bought via ebay/paypal. it arrives but the box is empty, except for a 2lb paperweight (about what the gpu would have weighed). i send ebay/paypal a photo of the paperweight sitting inside a box that has the advertised serial number. clearly you shipped the advertised box, but theres no way to prove that it contained a gpu and not a paperweight

and i clearly said that i do a photo with the gpu inside the box showing the same code(SN) before i ship it, so he can't say shit like that

you could easily take that photo, then switch in a brick before mailing. (at least thats the buyers scam argument)
207  Economy / Computer hardware / Re: 24" 16awg PCIE-PCIE and PCIE leads, and 18awg M-F-M Splitters (6pin and 6+2pin) on: January 24, 2017, 05:02:40 PM
Hey man, still got stock and do you ship to EU?, cheers

lots of 24" cables in stock, but no splitters at the moment.

shipping to EU is possible, but more expensive than US shipping
Hi i did send a PM i need some cables .

Thank you

responded. as mentioned EU shipping can be costly, but packages under 2kg are "small packet".

32pcs of 24" cable (leads or pcie-pcie) should just squeak under the limit, with ground shipping at ~$40, and air at $~65.   Otherwise >2kg packages start ground shipping around $60 and up.
208  Bitcoin / Hardware / Re: BITMAIN AntRouter R1: 1st wireless networking device with bitcoin mining chip on: January 21, 2017, 01:23:15 PM
Has anyone lucked out and hit a block with an R1 yet?

I did hit many blocks!
(altcoin blocks  Tongue )

The chance someone will hit a block is to small, also the stock software will not let u know, I even think you never know you hit it.

doesnt it? the antminer UI has a "foundblocks" column (at least on most of the miners) where it would indicate if you had any success.  that said, if "solomining" through antpool it might not function correctly.

also, it only records that stat for its uptime. if it finds a block, and later the miner restarts itself, it will drop the stat back to '0'

You can see some new pictures of the (main) centerpiece options here: https://imgur.com/a/8LTyK

Hmmm? Did I misunderstand you in your pm? Are those glowing ones in your newest pictures made with tritium?
Or what makes them glow in the dark?
The tritium vila in the capsule under a UV light looks crazy but just don't go mixing any specific chemicals with it unless the capsule is made of lead or something so as not to leak any radiation, although it would look cool always lit up  Wink

Quote
Tritium is a radioactive form of hydrogen, used in research, fusion reactors and neutron generators. The radioactive properties of tritium are very useful. By mixing tritium with a chemical that emits light in the presence of radiation, a phosphor, a continuous light source is made.

the amount of tritium in a small glow rod is negligible - there are many other items in your house that emit more radiation (such as a smoke alarm, or radon gas)

i think a lot are selling thier gpus now, because profits are falling and gpus that seemed like a great investment when they made $3/day might be making little or no profit now, especially where power costs >$0.15/kwh

anyone paying <$0.15 is probably holding tight to their gpus. anyone paying <$0.08 is probably still buying up gpus quite happily

And who do you think buys the RX 470? or RX 480? Its gamers also.

2x RX 480 is faster than 1x 1080.

If 2 of the 480's are cheaper and faster than a 1080 why in the world would gamers overpay for a 1070/1080 Huh

The Nvidia's will tank in price also.

Plus its easier and faster selling something that's cheaper.

I remember how hard it was selling an R9 280x or R9 290 during the Litecoin crash of 2014. Nobody in the second hand market could afford to pay $200-$300 for a used GPU. But the R9 270X sold super fast for $100.

The Nvidia 980 launched at the end of 2014 for like $550, right now a year later its going for about $200 on eBay. How is that 80% off retail? More like 70% off retail.

IMO, a few things wrong in your analysis.

1) 2x 480 might *mine* faster than a single 1080, but for gaming the 1080 (or even a 1070) would win hands down at most tests - using crossfire doesnt offer a 200% performance, its more like 150% the speed of a single card  http://www.tweaktown.com/articles/7770/amd-radeon-rx-480-crossfire-beating-geforce-gtx-1080-4k/index9.html  (tldr: CF RX480 perform weaker than the 1080 in most cases, and outperform in some games that are optimized for multiple GPUs)

generally speaking, a single GPU is bound to work great at everything, whereas crossfire (or sli) only help on games that are programmed to benefit.

2) 2x480 costs the same (or slightly more) than a 1070. The 1070 has better power consumption, and as mentioned is better for games that dont have any DX12/crossfire benefits.

3) the 980 launched over TWO years ago (end of 2014, versus its now 2017). not to mention launch pricing is always high, and drops 10-20% within the first few months. the top-of-the-line cards sell at a massive premium too as they are aimed at a hardcore crowd. the best performance/$ is always found in the mid-tier cards (the 270/280, the 970/1070, etc)

and finally, as amph mentioned the 10XX series has done an excellent job of making money since release - the 1070 made almost $20/day at lbry for a week or two. I bought mine a few days into the hype, and its made back ~80% of what i paid so far, and the card still holds ~70% of its original MSRP on kijiji/ebay
213  Alternate cryptocurrencies / Mining (Altcoins) / Re: Claymore's ZCash AMD GPU Miner v11.1 (Windows/Linux) on: January 18, 2017, 06:51:34 PM
one question please:
since there is no polaris ASM kernel coming, everyone who has mixed rigs now (e.g. r9 fury + rx 470) is going to split them up to install driver 15.12 and run ASM kernel for their older gen cards. Is it worth it for r9 nano and r9 fury?
thanks!

i thought you need to run different driver versions anyways?

I don't pay for Internet and electricity. I'm new to bitcoin, how long will it take me to mine 1Bt using my laptop?  Gpu 2gb 8gb ram i5 and how? THANKS FOR YOUR REPLİES.

laptop wont mine anything.

build a gpu rig or buy a bitmain asic miner
216  Bitcoin / Hardware / Re: Bitmain's Released Antminer S9, World's First 16nm Miner Ready to Order on: January 17, 2017, 04:51:49 PM
Interesting move on the T9. I wonder if its appearance is related to the recent steep rise in difficulty.

They were due to either release more S9's or something like this. Doesn't matter too much as they're close in efficiency.

This is like a 30% difference in efficiency, not sure that is very close (unless my math is wrong, it is early)

its actually about 20%. 400 vs 480w

I think I might take a coin to auction... any suggestions?

5 btc coin.
Oh ho? Which one?

Both same auction - start from 0 or face if you don't have the stones.
thats just being silly. 4.9BTC bid from me out of the gates just to save everyones time

5 btc coin.

is loaded important to you? i have some redeemed 5BTC coins that might be more what you're looking for.

anything less than a 1BTC premium on the 5BTC coins is laughable - IMO 6.0-6.5BTC is a fair price in todays market for an unopened coin
219  Alternate cryptocurrencies / Mining (Altcoins) / Re: How will this change the world of mining?? GTX 1080 / 1070 on: January 15, 2017, 09:14:44 PM
Hello, im new to mining but I got a 1070 and it says in Slushs pool that I have a Gh/s Rate of 1.054 if that helps somehow (i have no idea if that good or bad but just for your information in case somebody is interested Cheesy)

It is impressive how much more powerful GPUs have become.  I primarily used 5830's ( ~290 MH/s each) for my BTC GPU rigs.

However, don't mine BTC with a GPU; mine ZEC.

i remember that was the selling point of the block erupter "300MH/s means 1 block erupter replaces a GPU!"  3-4x computing increase for GPUs in 4 yers seems pretty close to Moore's law
220  Alternate cryptocurrencies / Mining (Altcoins) / Re: PandaMiner Launches Global Sales! on: January 14, 2017, 01:27:20 PM

the only thing stopping me from pulling the trigger on one of these is the MXM video cards, i am still trying to figure out upgradability :/
cause tbh, with how GPU's work, it will be no different than any other miner, it will NEED to upgrade to stay viable.
i would HATE to buy one of these, then VEGA drops and the possibilities open up. IF its easier to upgrade my own GPUS, ill stay with my own rigs

these are not for people who intend to upgrade them within less than a year - not sure what you expect to do with the used rx480 cards even if you did do the upgrade?

right, so why would these be appeasable ? just the plug and play thing?

hmm, interesting...

@Phil. so are you looking at about 12 months+ ROI at 3k purchase price? IF not upgradable, that doesn't sound promising :/

My understanding is - you cannot easily upgrade MXM GPUs. Only source of them for customers will be on Ebay from users cannibalized their laptops.

I would gladly be wrong on it

thats what i was thinking, so i just dont see the reason to buy one of these myself then, except ya the plug and play thing, but wont it just be a paper weight by (if not b4) one even ROI's?
AMD has new cards coming, so does Nvidia, as always.  Maybe Pandaminer will have local distributors one can take their machine to for upgraded cards in the future, as the ONLY thing that matters to me mainly is upgradability of these. the rest is just meh, can do it myself for cheaper (and more fun).

This system has a handful of advantages over a custom mining rig with fullsize gpus:
1) its pretty much plug-n-play, whereas a custom rig can take a several hours longer to assemble, install OS/drivers, etc even when done en masse
2) higher power density. you can stack these in a tight space (like a datacenter)
3) fans should last a long time, and are otherwise replaceable (80mm server fans i assume?)

This system isnt really for home mining. its for those who want to install a large number of GPUs where power is cheap and openrigs are not accepted (or require too much maintenance).

theres no reason why the rx480 wont remain relevant to mining (even if better cards are released) for at least 2 years. look at the fact that the 2xx series and 79xx series have both been profitable on ethereum and/or zcash over the past few months. even if the mxm cards can be upgraded, its likely most buyers wont be buying upgrades for it until 2019 or beyond (the case/mobo/cpu is only a small part of the overall unit price anyways)

MXM cards dont resell easily i imagine - so by upgrading youd be putting your rx480 cards aside to gather dust. As mentioned, i have 3 270x cards that are still turning about $0.30/day/gpu profit. I bought them in ~2014 for the litecoin boom, so its been over two years and they are still relevant

That said, i dont see why pandaminer wouldnt be able to obtain and sell upgrade boards to its customers eventually. I bet they can get the MXM cards at a good price (should be cheaper than a full GPU), tack on a bit of profit, and still sell them for cheaper than a fullsize GPU in stores.
