When the masses start looking into conspiracy theory, wouldn't it be great if we can lump it all together?

I think Hillary Clinton tried that.  Wink
202  Bitcoin / Mining support / Re: Can't login to Antminer s9's. on: March 31, 2017, 01:56:35 PM
I had the same thing happen with my 13.0 TH earlier this year.  It took about 2 days before all the kinks were worked out of it, login issues and faults. Glad it's up!

Always nice!

Have you seen this article on BIP148 signalling starting August 1?   Roll Eyes

Makes me think about mining LiteCoin.

You won't have them on Monday.  Wink

Truth.

Forcing growth at an exponential rate as BIP101 wanted was way too fast and unnecessary in my opinion.
As I said here: Smiley
https://bitcointalk.org/index.php?topic=789369.msg18218127;topicseen#msg18218127

Ah, yes.  I missed that BIP101 comment and did not understand your reference to aliens at the time.  It did make me picture a first encounter w/ ET as a financial one. Now it makes sense  Wink

It's so complicated.  I think the idea of a linear and gradual block growth with each block may better address concerns over fast movement with a stepped change.  Then again ... I don't really know much - except about bicycle transportation planning

Bitcoin is a $15 Billion ... industry.  Maybe it'd be a better idea to experiment some with the silver highway called Litecoin.  That seems like a nice proving ground. I hear they are voting on SegWit. That's only a $200 Million industry with ASICs and is trading at like $4.  I just transferred some BTC to LTC for my first time, ever.  Nervous time for all.

206  Alternate cryptocurrencies / Altcoin Discussion / Re: DASH has less than 10 transactions per minute and is worth over $700,000,000 atm on: March 25, 2017, 12:24:02 AM
DASH seems to have good governance policies. It's sustaining, in theory, but with the profits spread I think it will lead to a miner cap and an overabundance of full nodes.  A lot of insecure full nodes is where I see vulnerabilities, but that's how bitcoin started.  I'll keep watching it and may buy some if the price comes down because I like their mission and focus on the end user.

Lots of blocks!  Always a good thing, especially with the price of bitcoin  Roll Eyes

I think it's becoming clear it's not an ETF rejection, but the  Undecided fork  Embarrassed discussions.  I've been thinking on this post:

P.S. core is the cause of this problem, clearly ignoring what the majority of Bitcoin want.
70% voiced interest in wanting BIP100 ... no sign of that.

I agree. Is it possible to signal BIP101? It's an interesting proposal by Gavin Andresen: "I really don't care what the rule is. I just like predictable rules.  I like knowing what the block size is going to be like on Feb 15, 2022."

Where he received the project directly from Satoshi (or is Satoshi, right), perhaps it's worth a look?

Happy mining! Tongue

EDIT: He encourages not mining blocks with the current version.
208  Bitcoin / Mining support / Re: I need quiet in my house! Sound control techniques for S9 miners? on: March 22, 2017, 06:03:10 PM
If you are considering this option, you should contact sidehack. I had 4 Asicminer tubes sent to him unassembled and he did the rest. I was given an option to rent or buy power supplies and I paid a small monthly connection fee plus $80 per month per kw. He even sold them for me once I was finished with them. Check out his sig for up-to-date information.

Sweet!  I may give that a shot because I am thinking about cashing in my 401k and moving to the tropics - where mining isn't an option because of inconsistant electricity, at best.
209  Bitcoin / Mining support / Re: I need quiet in my house! Sound control techniques for S9 miners? on: March 19, 2017, 11:17:39 PM
In a datacenter, which is what the intended use of these is. The only quiet home option is the super unreliable Antminer R4. As a side note I have found that the ebit miners are the quietest of all the 16/14nm miners I have worked with. Their firmware also offers the most control of the miner versus the Avalon and bitmain units.

Cool.  I've been looking at the datacenter option, but I only have two miners. My local co-location center wants $800 per month for a 1/2 rack, plus 9c kw/h.  I would need to have more miners.  I've looked at the firm out of Seattle, but am not sure about sending my expensive computers to a datacenter in another state.
210  Bitcoin / Hardware / Re: Bitmain's Released Antminer S9, World's First 16nm Miner Ready to Order on: March 19, 2017, 11:03:38 PM
Satoshi intended the hard-fork to deal with unsolvable issues like this.  The longest chain becomes bitcoin, the shorter becomes an altcoin.  If this issue does not resolve some other way, that's what should happen.

Interesting approach for the medium and long term.

Bitmain gets to support client they want.  Miners (me) get to support the client we want by mining the pool that indicates it.
I doubt Bitmain's owners are intentionally trying to go bankrupt.
Valid point.  They are expressing their right to say how they feel: "BU".  I still think they are a great company! I just do not want to see a fork. It  would simply be full of problems.

Ultimately I think this issue will be solved by a few engineers deciding how to move forward.

Right now. It is only signaling.  "Sources" say that they are moving the public 51% threat to a more realistic signaling of 75% for BU over a sustained period. Once a change was decided, there would be two weeks before the change actually took place.

I think BU is the better solution for scaling (which I think BTC should do) and keeping transactions on chain.  We just don't need to see a fork.

Support another coin with GPU mining....you'll be glad you did....& so will your wallet  Wink  Mine's gettin full !!!  Cheesy

I am considering ETH (not ETC, speaking of forks).
211  Bitcoin / Pools / Re: [25+PH] KanoPool kano.is 0.9% PPLNS US,DE,SG,JP,NL,NYA 🐈 on: March 19, 2017, 10:35:05 PM
If BU occurs at the ridiculous level some people are suggesting, 51%, then your wallet will be the last thing you'd have to worry about, coz BTC price will fall badly on both sides of the fork (worse than it has already)

It basically means that you can turn the "21 Billion Bitcoins EVER" to 42 Billion.  If that happens, then there goes the gold comparison and everyone will question the entire value.  It's not that it would be value-less, but the value could take years to recover with transactions showing on both chains.

What needs to happen is for proper transition from one protocol to the next using 95% as core does (yes they do some things right Tongue)

That's obvious, but do you think some of the larger Chinese corporations would try to deflate the price (and entire BTC economy) for perceived competitive advantage in the long?  Why would anybody want to move away ...?

we all need to hope that no one is stupid enough to force a fork at 50% ...

If it happens at 50% then your probably best to stop using your Bitcoins until the problems die down and there's a definite winner.

That's my plan. I'd like to start mining some AltCoins now but don't know much about any but ETH.

Edit: 'sources' say BU requires 75% for 2 weeks, so I guess all the talk around about lower %s is probably trying to scare people into making decisions.
But anyway, if BU ever does reach 75%, that means you should have 2 weeks to sort things out.
... and the 2 weeks is probably 2016 blocks, which if there is a fork of any sort would mean more than 2 weeks.

Good info.  I agree.  There will be a lot of pressure on pools and miners supporting those pools to either switch or 'cause' the fork.  I just want Bitcoin to keep working.  Transactions backlog every-so-often, but I don't think it's time for changes.
212  Bitcoin / Hardware / Re: Bitmain's Released Antminer S9, World's First 16nm Miner Ready to Order on: March 19, 2017, 03:44:22 AM
I refuse to support this company, I would prefer to halt my operation and wait for competition to enter the market. Than to offer my hard earned money in support of someone who wants to ultimately see the destruction of bitcoin as we know it.

I own a couple S9s.  I am super happy with them.  However, BTC I DO NOT WANT TO SEE A FORK!!!! BTC Antpool's unannounced adoption of BU may force a hard fork, effectively creating two block chains with the "real" bitcoin.  If that happens then BTC will likely head into a downward trend.  BITMAIN, a company which I support and mined at until the BU adoption, likely sees gains in the long-term and puts them at a competitive advantage if the price drops because of lower priced electricity.

If you can split Bitcoin, then what value does it have?  There is only 21 million Bitcoin.  If we hard fork, there becomes 42 million.  What prevents another split in the future?  The fact that BTC will not be duplicated is where it has value.  If it can - and would likely - show up on two separate chains (1MB and 8MB), then nobody will want it until all of the double transactions are worked into the BTC or XBC.

I, personally, like a larger block size but not unless we get the SegWit people to adopt it as well. There must be consensus in any changes for bitcoin to remain bitcoin.  There is not consensus.
213  Bitcoin / Mining support / Re: I need quiet in my house! Sound control techniques for S9 miners? on: March 17, 2017, 03:53:51 AM
The trick is to not run industrial equipment like these miners inside your house.

Where do you run yours?

What size blocks would "BU" have?

My understanding is 8MB.

Find me a block size option that is just a block size option ...
There isn't one, they all throw in some other agenda that they want and pretend it's just a blocksize solution.

I can see that.  I guess it seems like something needs to be done about scaling.  Bitcoin is not scale-able with current tx/sec capabilities.  I don't know much, but when I'm getting lunch at a food cart I do not want to wait for confirmation before they start making my veggie burrito sin queso.

My layman mind looks at SegWit as leaving the blockchain, moving away from decentralization, and the status-quo can lead to high fees.  Unconfirmed txns are down now, but were up to 70,000 at one point.

EDIT: I am concerned about the possibility of a fork in BTc.

Oh nice question I was not thinking about this so I will buy also some headphones to sleep normal when I buy some miners to earn some money by mining on my hardware.

The Bose noise canceling headphones work amazingly well ...

Probably an A6
2.26BTC txn fees Smiley

I really love the big fat ones like this...and a payout as well! Cheesy

So what about a switch to BU?  Wouldn't increasing the blocksize allow more transactions and, thus, more fees?
217  Bitcoin / Mining support / Re: I need quiet in my house! Sound control techniques for S9 miners? on: March 16, 2017, 11:47:36 PM
Immersion cooling would be extremely quite but likely expensive.

That looks cool, but I bet you are right as there are many different types of fluids and you need to contact them for pricing.  It seems like you would take the cards out of the S9s because you would not want the fans and the case would not be needed, expect for the control board.

Edit: I wonder if one could simply take off the fans and submerge only the ASIC portion, leaving the top of the case exposed  Undecided

You might try mineral oil immersion but you need circulating pumps for that which would add noise and potential failure points.

Yeah.  I've seen that.  It's not for me at this point.  I'm thinking I may build a sound proof room with a dedicated main ... after getting a few more.
218  Bitcoin / Mining support / Re: I need quiet in my house! Sound control techniques for S9 miners? on: March 14, 2017, 10:43:53 PM
Hey all,

The acoustic foam works okay.  I've been looking at generator boxes, but they are a bit of money and I am not sure how they will work.  I have shaped the acoustic foam into a "Z" shape for air flow from below and exhaust up.

The thing the works the best is Bose Quiet Comfort 35.  I can turn on Netflix and not hear a thing!

If I go larger, I will need to look at colocating or building an actual soundproof room in the unfinished basement - though that will lead to ventilation needs.  ˇYa veremos!

Any ideas to quiet bitcoin machine noise?
219  Bitcoin / Mining support / Re: How do you power an Antminer S9 in USA / Canada with 110v? on: March 14, 2017, 10:37:12 PM
My project this week is building a sound insulated box with in and out vents. then I will start worrying about keeping it cool in summer. (I suppose a topic for new thread)
Is anyone working on something similar? Seems small sound insulated server racks cost more than the machine itself.

Yup.  I just so happen to have started a thread on the exact topic.
220  Bitcoin / Mining support / Re: How do you power an Antminer S9 in USA / Canada with 110v? on: March 13, 2017, 06:03:18 PM

Noob, found this site while searching for a 110v psu, found a solution and thought I'd share for others.
ParallelMiner has HP Server PSU with adapter for running antminer S7 and S9 for 119buck.

Thanks for adding some tips.  Please, let us know how they work out.  My understanding is that they run hotter and do not have the same efficiencies as other PSUs, which is odd because servers are extremely common.

I ended up going with an EVGA 1600W T2 for each of my miners.  They are plugged into their own 120v circuit and have been running great for a while.  I found another outlet that was on a solo circuit.  I guess that's the nice thing about unfinished basements.  As for the noise ...  Undecided I ended up getting acoustic foam, which helped, and high end noise-canceling headphones to provide a complete escape.  Diggin' the 13 and 13.5 - along with the high BTC prices.
