Thank you for your comment, zorke.
I do have more than what you see in that account, but I've bought at market prices, which were often a lot higher than now. This is part of my retirement fund, so I have to be careful with it. But I do think it's important to contribute in some way. I can't write code, so donating to some members who seem like they can contribute to the community is the best I can do right now.

I suspect that some members of the community might not like such giveaways, since they, for the most part, have also had to buy NXT on the market. Giving away something that has value can sometimes undermine that value. So we should be careful with what and how much we give away and why. I was just getting impatient, I guess, and wanted to light a few fires to get something going and to feel like I was contributing.

You're doing things the right way.  I think the fallacy that some use is trying to compare a 2nd generation crypto to Bitcoin.  You simply can't do that because Bitcoin has a 5 year headstart.  When you're first to market you can get away with a lot of stuff that you cannot when you're trying to build upon that core infrastructure.  All these people using "Satoshi did this" or "early adopters own x" is just spinning their wheels.  You cannot be late to the game and expect to be afforded the same luxury as something that broke ground.

The entire goal right now is to entice people to use Nxt.  And you do that by giving them the opportunity to test it.  Luckily people like you and Damelon get that.

This is true. I also think it's important not to try to compete directly with bitcoin. The "NXT is better than bitcoin because..." strategy sets up a them-and-us dynamic that alienates people who might otherwise be really interested. Instead, offering a change to test NXT, ideally with services they actually want and will use (decentralised crypto exchange, for one) is what's going to win people over.
2103  Economy / Speculation / Re: Wall Observer BTC/USD - Bitcoin price movement tracking & discussion on: May 04, 2014, 05:26:07 PM
Guys, we look prime for a big dump on Houbi. The buy pressure keeps dwindling and the down trend has been re established for over a week now.  His market will most likely drift until news comes out this week. But I think we test 2555 and lower VERY soon.

Odd time for a dump, slap-bang in the middle of a 3-5 day holiday. Do you think they'll hold off dumping until Tuesday, or are you thinking it's more imminent than that?

No, I am just saying the chart is pretty much screaming that it is coming. We could even get a slight (2730-2780) bounce before it comes, imo.  Its soon Monday in China already.  I think in the next 72 hours there is going to be a big one.

The Big One? Final Dump and move on. Or is that too much to hope for? I just can't see this going on indefinitely.
2104  Economy / Speculation / Re: Wall Observer BTC/USD - Bitcoin price movement tracking & discussion on: May 04, 2014, 01:03:15 PM
It will not change just by the current people passing the bag on. The new cohort of 3.2x more people is what will take it higher.

The current players' desire to have cheaper coins is no more significant then.

For the new cohort to come in, there must be a motivation factor. And what might that be?

I suspect, though I don't know for sure (no doubt others will comment on this):
Lots of new people (aka the "Fresh Fiat" we keep hearing about) are going into bitcoin. We know that the number of new accounts on Coinbase, Blockchain etc is rising significantly, and that must be bringing some new money in.
The problem is that speculative money is leaving bitcoin at the same time. Bitcoin was vastly overpriced and has corrected/is correcting (depending on how bearish you are).
Although it's a gross simplification, I wonder whether the newcomers are more 'normal' buyers, Joe Publics who have heard about Bitcoin and decided to buy a small amount, try it out etc, before perhaps investing more in the future. Whereas the speculative money is at least an order of magnitude greater per person, because these people were trying to make a lot of money at it.
It may be that a proportion of current newcomers become larger investors later on. I'd be interested to know how many day traders here started small before going in heavy enough to make/lost decent money, and how long that took.

TL;DR - growth in user base and fiat is already there, it's just slower and steadier than the speculators running for the door.
-> Relax. Once the speculators have bailed properly ("capitulation") we'll see the underlying growth that was there all along.

Discuss.

This is clearly the pre-amble for the big rally to $5,000

Tera, has someone hacked your account?

Oooh, looks like some new 'news' on the cards:
http://www.ibtimes.com/bitcoin-terrorist-threat-counterterrorism-program-names-virtual-currencies-area-interest-1579699

Rumour has it Saddam paid for his WMD's using bitcoin, won't somebody think of the children... Meanwhile paper dollars remain the No. 1 currency for criminals worldwide.

Earlier than I expected.

EDIT: Ah, they're only studying it. Good, good.

Now I will keep my funds on the European exchanges for sure.
Edit:
This news combined with the fact that Mastercard hired some lobbyist to create some anti-bitcoin awareness is really bad news.

No it isn't. It means people who run Mastercard are afraid of bitcoin and are confirming it's utility by attacking it.

Free advertising.

Some transactions are fast, low-cost and secure.
For everything else, there's MasterCard.

Looks like they've got in touch from an update on the site - is that right?

i see the update to the article here: http://bitscan.com/articles/missing-keys-clue-hints-revealed

We have a winner!

Guessed with just six hints... Congratulations to the code cracker who has been in touch to receive a bonus prize.

But they never actually sent any bonus prize. If they do, they should post a link to the transaction, for the sake of transparency.

Alright. I'll check about the prize and if there was a crossed wire somewhere (which I'm assuming there was) I'll send you the top up.

pumpy dumpy sat on a wall.

Or are we finally getting to the Last Big Dump before the bottom? Assuming it's going to happen (which I now do), it can't be much further away.
2110  Economy / Speculation / Re: ardent speculators: consider shorting before 4th May 00:00GMT (that means 3rd) on: May 03, 2014, 05:05:44 AM
OK but what would happen if the exchanges would just say, can we have that in writing? Or speak to our lawyers?

Even if they could force them out of business eventually, it would take a lot longer than just "understanding what it wants" and complying without resistance. What would happen if they did not "want" to understand ?

That's just not how things are done. I'm sure OP can suggest some outcomes, but remember this is not about what the exchanges want. PBOC is instructing their banks, not them.
2111  Economy / Speculation / Re: ardent speculators: consider shorting before 4th May 00:00GMT (that means 3rd) on: May 02, 2014, 10:49:16 PM
I don't understand the Chinese system. Maybe OP can elaborate.

PBOC is not a lawmaker and not a court. Can they even tell banks what to do? Over the PHONE!?!

Is there no legal system in China? Why don't these banks and exchanges just continue to operate until they receive a court order, which they can then challenge?

Nulla poena sine lege, not in China or what?

Actually, the questions that you pose expecting the answer "no" - that's pretty much the case.
Take a look at OP's articles on bitcoin.de. PBOC doesn't even tell the exchanges what to do. It expects them to understand what it wants without it needing to be that direct. The fact that it even needed to discuss it directly with smaller players was a major anomaly. And no, the legal system is not like the one we take for granted in the West.
Bottom line, PBOC can and will choke the exchanges in China by denying them banking relationships. They're 'free' to carry out as much business as they want outside of that framework.

In other news, does anyone know what's up with dgex? It hasn't been allowing NXT trades all day.
2113  Alternate cryptocurrencies / Announcements (Altcoins) / Re: [NXT] Nxt - Official Thread on: May 02, 2014, 04:07:19 PM
Double "you" sounds nice. People still probably like more "the". But the other words? Could be also:

Light
Cheap
Fast
Efficient

I always think of what my mother would think if she read these. I like that it is simple and suits whoever is reading it. I like that 'decentralized' hasn't been used, "the future is Nxt" is a shorthand for this in my mind that the public can relate to, includind my ma!

I wonder whether something like "low-cost" would work better than "cheap"? (Connotations of value instead of being, well, cheap.)
How about "lightweight" instead of "light", or is that distinction not worth making or can it be made a better way. Again, thinking of what your mum would think.

Great, thank you.
Wonder what the distribution of Dogecoin is... reckon it must be pretty egalitarian.

Coins Source updated the NXT page, and the score jumped .3 points.

We'd appreciate it if you guys overlook the post and possibly let us know which NXT logo you want on our page.

http://www.coinssource.com/crypto-coins/nxt/

This is great, though there seem to be one or two inaccuracies or odd sentences.
I think one of the biggest problems is that NXT is perceived as a challenger to bitcoin and therefore is a threat to die-hard bitcoiners. In fact, the Asset Exchange could be a huge benefit to all cryptocurrencies since it can function as a decentralised exchange. (Side point: I guess it would even be possible to come up with futures contracts, so that you could be sure your $100 of bitcoin/NXT/whatevercoin was worth $100 when you sold it for something else. That would be a huge step forward as it would avoid the need for centralised exchanges right up to the point of cashing out.)
It would also be good to get some simple charts of NXT distribution, compared to bitcoin and one or two others. That would pre-empt a lot of criticism.
2116  Economy / Services / Re: WHO WANTS TO SPLIT THE PRIZE- NEED HELP! on: May 02, 2014, 04:51:07 AM
The winner posted the solution in the main thread.

Seems like a lot of effort for 0.1 btc....

The reward was actually only 0.05. bitscan.com was supposed to chip in more after the contest and after getting in touch with them, but they have been completely silent on the issue, even though they've been posting non-stop to twitter about other stuff. So keep that in mind for their future contests.

Hi dalek,
I'll chase this up with them. They are normally very good. If they don't pay the other half I will.
2117  Economy / Games and rounds / Re: Guess the private key, win the bitcoins (puzzle game) on: May 01, 2014, 06:10:31 PM
I will tell you this much....

The first one was done without the brute force

How the hell is ... = S?Huh

It's Morse Code. That was in one of the hints. As in SOS: dot dot dot, dash dash dash, dot dot dot.
2118  Economy / Games and rounds / Re: Guess the private key, win the bitcoins (puzzle game) on: May 01, 2014, 05:42:35 PM
The day isn't over....

I give you props for the game.  To be honest....  I just don't like the brute force...

and you know that's how this one was won

If he got wmm out of (u+m)(u-m) then he's a genius!

I do get where you're coming from.
I would have preferred to do this without the brute force element. But I knew that people would make the software. That's why the first one was solved so quickly. My response was to make some of the clues much harder, so that it wouldn't be so easy to guess most and brute force the rest. You'd actually have to get into the head of the puzzle-setter and figure out how they thought and the kind of clues they were setting.
It's possible this went too far, though someone obviously did manage it with a minimum of hints.
Next one I won't write this way, it will use a different principle.

Sure. If it was only about the money.

Ok, so the new client looks great and seems to work really well.
Can someone help with a problem:
As I mentioned, I already bought some NXT and put them in an account made with a 30-character random key. I'm currently using an old Android app and it doesn't work well. I can't send out from it.
When I started Wesley's new client, I assumed I'd be able to use the same key, but it requires a 35-character key. So, how do I use my current key, or sweep the funds into my new account?

Just use the same key. NXT account= secret phrase. It doesn't depend from client.

Yes - done that now. The original confusion was in starting the client for the first time and being required to enter a 35-character key. My other one was 'only' 30 characters.
