~if there are 100, 1000 or 10000 merit sources there shouldn't be any catastrophic consequences. However you get the big advantage of having more eyes looking around~ The problem will be oversight. With 1000 merit sources, it will be virtually impossible for Admin to keep an eye on them. One or more rogue merit sources can result in spammers ranking up again.

Now there are 9 places in the Trial room and all our bots (insects) are pacifists (drown with only 1% probability, but revenge for drowning themself of course). If someone come with aggressive bot (like Loyce's one) it will climb with 8 pacifists - it's a question if it can beat 8 with the same ease as 6. I can still beat 8 of them ![Cheesy](https://bitcointalk.org/Smileys/default/cheesy.gif) I'm now up against 8 of these: ![Image loading...](https://ip.bitcointalk.org/?u=http%3A%2F%2Fi63.tinypic.com%2Frvgjrn.gif&t=664&c=s0wJcMVDUSekEA) I'm using the same settings as before. With one player like meThe probability of them drowning anyone is 1%. I win if nobody drowns anyone. If just one bot drows another bot, I'm very likely to lose. I hope my math is correct: Round 1: the probability of nobody drowning anyone is (0.99^8)^8 (=0.525596) (because there are 8 bots drowning 8 others with 1% probability) Round 2: the probability of nobody drowning anyone is (0.99^8)^8 Round 3: the probability of nobody other than me drowning anyone is (0.99^8)^8 The probability of nobody other than me drowning anyone for 3 rounds is ((0.99^8)^8)^3 (=0.145). That means there's a 14.5% chance I win the round if I drown them all on round 3. With a 1 bit buy-in and 8.91 bit pot, that gives me an average return of 1.29x my wagered amount. There's a small bonus: sometimes I win a shared prize (say 1.11 bit), which slightly increases the returns. With 2 players like meIf anyone were to join using the same strategy, the math changes: Round 1: the probability of nobody drowning anyone is (0.99^7)^7 (=0.611117) The probability of nobody other than us drowning anyone for 3 rounds is ((0.99^7)^7)^3 (=0.228). That means there's a 22.8% chance we both win if we drown them all on round 3 and have to share the pot. That gives an average return of 1.01677x the wagered amount.

I'll suggest something different. From what Jet Cash has written, some sources of merit may see the function of distributing merits almost as a professional activity. They spend time looking for what to merit. Without them receiving almost anything in return, and this seems to be a stressful activity since the forum is flooded with spam. I tried that a few times, but every time I go to patrol or Bitcoin Discussion, I end up reporting posts and getting users banned instead of meriting them. What I do, is Merit posts that I read anyway. I more or less gave up on searching for good posts, except for going through someone's post history once in a while. Other sources prefer to use these merits to distribute among people they already know and other legendary members. Merit is not only meant to stop spammers from ranking up, it's also meant to highlight good posts. That's why I merit posts of any rank For the record: I don't "know" anybody on this site ![Cheesy](https://bitcointalk.org/Smileys/default/cheesy.gif) ~I believe that Temporary sources of Merit should be added. It would last only 14 days. What he did not use would be burned. And his choice would be by a random algorithmic. Of course, so that it is not a total waste sending sMerit to a ghost, some elements in the equation would be added. The user would have to receive at least 1 merit in the last 120 days and have written something in the last 14 days, at least. I estimate that thousands of spammers have traded or bought Merit. This would give them the chance to rank up their alt accounts again, which goes against everything Merit was supposed to do.

After all that I've read about HitBTC, it's not on my list of trusted exchanges. I've used it, it worked fine, but I don't trust them with deposits.
There's a small one that I really like: BL3P. It's only used for EUR-BTC trading, aiming at EU-users, and is currently invite only. They responded very fast when I contacted support, and that's the reason they don't want to grow faster than they can handle. I switched to this one instead of Kraken because of Kraken's terrible performance (whenever there was action on the market, Kraken went down), and it has much higher withdrawal limits. Where's Poloniex in your list? I've recently opened an account for my altcoin experiment, they've had their problems in the past, but as far as I know they have quite a lot of users. Criteria for selection- low fees for trading/depositing/withdrawing
Are there even exchanges that ask for less than 0.5 m BTC nowadays? That's about 100 times more than needed, and at least 10 times more than needed to have a fast transaction most of the time.

I don't think your Newbie status matters. Theymos is working on an automated system to recover accounts, the last time I read about it, it was expected before the end of this year.

I forget how many members bitcointalk has, but I think it's over a million or so. If we don't even have 100 merit sources, there are definitely not going to be enough to give sufficient merit to those who deserve it. BPIP shows 376,866 active accounts, which means they've logged in within the past 3 months. But only 19453 accounts have received 1 or more Merit points. Many of these got it through Merit abuse. I think it's an optimistic estimate to say that only a few thousand accounts deserve to rank up, and that would still take one order of magnitude more sMerit than sources currently generate. Based on this, I'd say more sources would be needed. I have seen a few users with more Merit than Activity, which means the best of the best aren't restricted by Merit, but I think anybody who isn't a spammer shouldn't be limited by Merit either. I occasionally see some application threads getting bumped from months ago, so I have a feeling that it's not Theymos's priority or that he doesn't think more are needed. It took me 3 months of daily bumps and many endorsements to become a Merit source. Since then, the total number of sources went up from 80 to 84. That's about 1 new Merit source per month.

It would be interesting to see how many sources do not make it through their allotment each month; or what their average distribution is. This might show that it's less about the number of sources and more about finding posts they seem worthy.
I think theymos increases the source amount if sources empty their supply. That would explain why the top of the Most generous merit senders, all time has sent such a large amount. I'll try something new: whenever I have more than 10 source sMerit, I'll re-merit posts I've merited already. That shouldn't take too much time. I'll do that right now, starting with my merit transactions (the posts should still be relevant). Okay, it took more time than I thougth, but I've unloaded 17 sMerit. Update (a day later): I now finally have less than 10 (9 ![Cheesy](https://bitcointalk.org/Smileys/default/cheesy.gif) ) source sMerit left. I think I can keep doing this. Theymos awards many 10, 20, and 30 blocks of merits, maybe he is trying to lead by example? Theymos doesn't sent Merit often ( source): 25. 614 Merit sent by theymos (#35) to 93 unique users in 107 transactions 37. 369 Merit sent by theymos_away (#349090) to 60 unique users in 66 transactions Maybe he's trying to make up for that by sending larger amounts at once?

session token is : ********************************* I checked it: this session doesn't hold funds, and you should never use this session again. It's compromised, and anything you send there will most likely be taken by someone. You should treat session tokens the same way you treat private keys: don't ever post them online!

It would be pretty simple for sources to realize this and start awarding 3X-10X the merit they are awarding, just type in a bigger number.. Instead of awarding 1, 2, 5 merits, which seems to be the norm, they could take the lack of merit in circulation into account, and award 5, 10, 20 merits instead.. Some sources increased their default amount, suchmoon for example went from 1 to 5, then 7 and now 4 Merit most of the time. I still believe Merit is supposed to be earned from as many different users and for as many different posts as possible. It doesn't feel right to bump a Newbie to Member-levels if he makes one decent post. The sources do basically have a surplus of smerit to send don't they? I've never been able to empty mine, although it's at the lower 25% nowadays. I guess you would have to decide how much the person deserves to rank up VS how much merit it takes to accomplish that for them.. I don't want to be the one deciding this, I just want to give a small part of the total Merit each user earns. By receiving Merit from different sources, personal bias is averaged out. Theymos awards many 10, 20, and 30 blocks of merits, maybe he is trying to lead by example? In comparison if you look at LoyceV, this person awards merit a lot, but they are almost all just 1s and 2s.. Jetcash, almost all 1s 2s and 5s.. I started with small amounts long before I was a Merit source, and continued like that. I believe in meriting more different posts.
I'm still trying to get my source Merit under 10 or even at 0, I have 300+ sMerit "of my own" left to give, and haven't touched them in months.

I'm questioning the definition of "read". Do you mean if someone clicks the link to the message? Just clicking " my messages" doesn't mean (to me) that someone's read my message.
My thoughs exactly! And that brings me to my next point: when I click "MY MESSAGES", it brings me to the last page, even when I have new messages on the previous page. A very easy solution would be if "MY MESSAGES" brings me to the oldest unseen PM. When receiving many messages, I can imagine it's easy to overlook some of them if you have to manually search for the oldest unread PM.

I agree with you that Merit and Trust are more difficult to gain than Activity It depends on how you look at it: Activity is indeed easy to gain, but going up in Activity Rank is very difficult. I'm at Activity Rank 971 now, and the only way for me to go up, is if users with a higher rank don't post anything for 14 days in a row (or delete enough old posts to lose Activity). And unlike Merit and Trust, which basically depend on what I post and how I behave, there's nothing I can do to "beat" other users' Activity Rating.

2000 GB sell wall ![Shocked](https://bitcointalk.org/Smileys/default/shocked.gif) Bytball sinks to the new bottom. For a FUD spammer, you're quite dedicated! Who's paying you for this spam? There are many things in life I don't like, but I don't spam threads dedicated to them. That's just silly. If you don't like it, move over and don't come back.

Mods are tired of having to waste time of this crap and we've got better things to be doing, but maybe someone will get around to them. I hope so, it would be a waste to demotivate the users who are now busting them. Changes need to come from the top and until theymos does something about this sort of huge farming and abuse, which has become endemic, then it's pointless even bothering. When farmers like these are spotted the admins should be looking into their IPs and banning them en mass instead of us having to play cat and mouse with them banning the few we find. There will likely be dozens or even hundreds of these accounts it's pointless when they just evade the bans of the other accounts and can get paid from ICO campaigns in the process. With my latest trick, I can easily list hundreds of homograph spam posts (bump bots) per day. I'd love to collect them for a few days, then get them all banned at once. Chances of a false positive are almost non-existent: no human would ever post a homograph attack, unless it's copied from someone else. It would be relatively easy to take out many of them. I've already registered nukebot for this dream ![Cheesy](https://bitcointalk.org/Smileys/default/cheesy.gif) I've suggested making users like you and krishnapramod mods so you can handle them yourself but we all know what happens to my suggestions. Thanks for trying ![Smiley](https://bitcointalk.org/Smileys/default/smiley.gif) I'd love to fill modlog with banned spammers ![Cheesy](https://bitcointalk.org/Smileys/default/cheesy.gif)

Why should I use HD wallets if I still need to store each single local private key as well? I think you're overthinking it ![Wink](https://bitcointalk.org/Smileys/default/wink.gif) Storing private keys isn't a problem, your wallet takes care of that for you. The best thing about an HD wallet is that you only have to create a backup once. With a non-HD wallet, you'll need to create a new backup each time your wallet creates a (batch of) new private key(s).

Is there still a Mod active in this thread? My last few reports haven't been banned yet. Bumping this question ![Smiley](https://bitcointalk.org/Smileys/default/smiley.gif)

~ my brain is fried right now. I have no idea how you are getting the list! I just created it by changing each character to all possible options. That would only work if there's only one mistake in the key. I don't have Visual Studio and can't run a .exe either (Linux here).

Original: Great project. The concept is very nice. When are you launching bounty program for this lofty project?
