221  Bitcoin / Bitcoin Discussion / Re: New logo and visual identity for Bitcoin on: September 30, 2014, 05:18:30 PM
BTC logo has been around for a LONG TIME and is firmly established.  There's been quite a few topics like this but most of them were from LONG AGO.  I'm also a designer.  I'd suggest you put some work in with an alt coin which hasn't been around as long and needs help with branding.  Smiley

Bitcoin is new and nothing in Bitcoin has been done a "long time ago" unless you think 5 years is a long time.  Most people have never heard of Bitcoin and there has not been any significant branding to date.  New logo proposals are just fine.

Still trying to get whitelisted.

I should not have to send Bitcoins to a group that has mismanaged donations in the past and are involved in promoting BFL.  Please whitelist my username so I can make the corrections.

I have whitelisted you. I'm unaware of the two issues that you mentioned and presume that they happened when the wiki was under previous ownership.

I am talking about the bitcointalk.org.  Everybody knows this discussion board was used to scam newcomers to Bitcoin and many of the people involved with this site are also involved with the Wiki.  It says it is community-developed so if you want to blame specific "owners" then remove that claim from the Wiki and identify the "owners" who are responsible for the content.
223  Bitcoin / Bitcoin Discussion / Re: New logo and visual identity for Bitcoin on: September 30, 2014, 12:08:46 PM
Why change things when its just starting to become recognized?

Exactly because of that. Smiley

As more people get familiar with Bitcoin, it will be increasingly more difficult to change its visual identity. Professionally designed visual ID will help improve the image of Bitcoin and accelerate widespread adoption. That's why I want to contribute my expertise in this area, just as programmers contribute in the area of maintaining and improving the code of the whole thing.

Even before I started working on this I already expected there would be resistance from people in the community who are emotionally attached to the "old-school" style and don't mind its stylistic shortcomings. I understand your preference for the Ubuntu inspired design, but, with all due respect, you don't make the major world currency using that kind of design. Some people couldn't care less about "tiny details" like this but most people do, either consciously or not. Whatever your position, let's agree to disagree and not turn this into a battle. It's all just a game anyway.. Smiley

Anyhow, I will continue working on this and once I'm done I will offer the final files to the public. Whoever wishes to support the new design, please get in touch, offer suggestions and help spread the word. Thank you.

There are already multiple logos such as the orange one you point out, the gold one used by this forum, and a few others.  The more the better and the free market can sort it out.

It seems the bitcoin elite are more charitable, more intelligent, more capable, younger vs current elite.   The world is in safer hands with bitcoiners but i get the feeling you wont get something for nothing like with our current system.

Oh sure.

let's see ... BFL, Mt. Gox, Bitfloor. GLBSE, CoinLab, MyBitcoin, Bitinstant, CoinLenders, Bitcointalk.org, Bitcoin Bounty Hunter,  ... tough question with no easy answer.

Amazingly Josh is still answering questions on the BFL forum.

Why do you find that amazing?

I find it amazingly stupid.  You are involved in pending civil litigation with the possibility of criminal charges.  People in that situation would have legal counsel who would tell them not to make any public statements because they could be used against them.  BFL has already pissed of the regulators by posting their rebuttal and having those foam fingers made up with customer funds.   I have referred your postings to the attorney who is heading up the case for the FTC and I explained about how you conspired with the people who run this forum to run ads that everybody involved knew would not be delivered as required by law.  Hopefully some of those funds can be recovered and returned to the people who trusted the operators of this forum.

You may also note the Chairman of the Bitcoin Foundation, Peter Vessenes, was trying to hide mining funds from a customer and was caught after posting on this forum:  http://cointext.com/wp-content/uploads/2013/11/alydiancomplaint.pdf
That was the last post he made here.

Is your upgraded client "up to date"?

Your balance will show as zero if it has ended up re-loading the blockchain until it gets to the point when you "acquired the coins" (i.e. it might just "come good" if you wait).

Also - "don't panic" and make sure that your backups are kept intact.

(and yes - use blockchain.info to check the balances of individual addresses to verify whether or not any coins have *moved*)

This is the transaction in question:

he scanned all his wallets for private key for 17ns8ggpV2SrUXvZwVkCPcGTGNjPUPSjL and it is not there.
231  Bitcoin / Bitcoin Technical Support / Re: Coins lost after upgrade to 0.9.3 on: September 29, 2014, 03:03:28 PM
Test the latest backup since it may not have been generated yet back in 2012

Same results. Sad

It sounds like your backup is either too old or is corrupted; try running "bitcoin-qt -salvagewallet" and if that fails see if you can get anything from pywallet (on both the current and backup wallets). Don't forget to keep separate copies of the original and the backup though, and check to see if there are any other recent backups that could contain the private key.

What's the likelyhood of an upgrade failing, corrupting my wallet and transferring all the coins to another address?  What happens during an upgrade exactly?  Is this even a possibility that IF something did go wrong the coins are still there in that final address for which I don't have the private keys for?

That is not possible.  Try and see what time you upgraded compared to the time that was recorded for the transaction at blockchain.info.  I don't see how they could be related but you can look at the times anyway.

How is regular shoping going to work if it takes a while to confirm? like you go to a supermarket with your phone and then pay, what happens if you have to wait to get it confirmed??

One way is off-blockchain transactions.  So if then exchange had a deal to be a processor for the supermarket and you can send funds from your Exchange account so it all happens within the exchange.  There could also be deal to use "green addresses" where your online wallet sending address is trusted by the supermarket.  So if you sent funds from your exchange wallet and the supermarket trusts the exchange.

238  Other / Beginners & Help / Re: BTC Transaction time on: September 25, 2014, 02:00:30 AM
You are discussing 2 separate problems.

The first is the probability of getting your transaction accepted by a miner.  This depends on the individual miner requirements to accept transactions.  You can't really calculate this easily because it is up to the miners own internal rules.

The next part of the problem is the time waiting for the next block.  That is a random process.  First you have to get the probability of being included in a block from step one and then multiply it by the probability of finding the next block. If you want to do caculations see http://bitcoin.stackexchange.com/questions/8028/given-the-probability-of-finding-a-block-and-time-taken-can-i-infer-hashrate and https://bitcoil.co.il/pool_analysis.pdf

...just quoting so you can't delete it. Recommending people to sue the forum  Huh

So you say we should all go along with scamming newcomers?  Is that why you are here?  The forum operators should give back the money and if they do not they should be prosecuted and sued like BFL and the other people who got caught on this forum:

http://www.sec.gov/News/PressRelease/Detail/PressRelease/1370539730583#.VCMTvOl0ypo
http://www.sec.gov/News/PressRelease/Detail/PressRelease/1370541972520#.VCMT3ul0ypo

A new forum run by new people can easily be set up.

Recommend suing the forum, is like saying you should sue the other companies for supporting a site that happens to have advertised a company that went belly up, the owner of BFL may be a con/thief or whatever you want to call them, but he was obviously paying the bills for advertising. The forum is just interested in advertising revenue, and has a clear comment that you should basically do your research before buying from anyone. Everyone who doesn't do their research, is a little foolish IMHO. If they got scammed this is extremely unfortunate, and I wish no Ill will to anyone and their hard earned cash, but come on. its easy to find review sites for just about anything these days.

As far as new comers, they can make a decision on their own who to buy equipment from based on feedback, and there was/is plenty of feedback to support the notion NOT to buy BFL and others here and the WWW, and the a place like (as example only) Bitmain and their record for on time delivery quality control, should maybe be considered above BFL. I haven't looked at the rating guide dogie or someone has regarding the manufacturers, but likely BFL isn't high on the list (I could be wrong, if I am I would question that then).

I might also add, that the comment that the site does not endorse blah blah, not be a disclaimer, but some pretty straight forward advice. Saying some people are crooks (read between the lines basically). Regardless of "when" the comment was added, it was still added, and likely hindsight was 20/20, and they realised after the fact they should put this little tidbit there. It is a good idea in any case to have it there, since this game does have it's fair share of dishonest people (Which is extremely unfortunate).

No, there is a huge difference between just running ads and running ads when you know people will be defrauded.  Any reasonable person would have known what was going on.  I certainly knew and I haven been complaining since early 2013 and so did the people running this site.  This site received thousands and thousands of complaints, it wasn't something they had no idea about as so they put up that disclaimer thing.  The disclaimer is worthless in a case like that and since it was put up after the complaints it would be seen more as an admission of guilt and it certainly won't limit any liability.

Beyond the legal liability the people running this site should return the money for the good of Bitcoin  because they are damaging Bitcoin's reputation by acting in an irresponsible manner.  Everybody knows the money was stolen and they overpaid for ads on here for the purpose of scamming people.  As the link I provided shows they were outbidding other people and spending thousands per week on ads here.  This is money stolen from newcomers who were trying to get involved in Bitcoin and they fell into a trap set by the people who run Bitcointalk.  Yes, you can blame the people for being stupid with their money but that is not a license to go around ripping people off.
