Here's a new episode to the puzzle game I piloted a couple of weeks back:
http://bitscan.com/articles/missing-keys-the-mystery-continues

Those clues were guessed pretty fast so hopefully this one will take a little longer. This is the first of three related episodes, to be released over the next month or so.

Original episode (for background) here: bitscan.com/articles/mystery-bitcoin-game-the-hidden-keys

so what is a bounty for that one?? Smiley
How much I will get if I will solve it?

Did you get the last one? The winner didn't let us know...
The first one has a prize of 0.05 in the address, plus a bonus if they get in touch to claim it (see what we did there?).
But this is the first of three. There will be small prizes along the way, and a bigger pot at the end if you can get them all.
Still ironing out the kinks but hopefully it will be fun.
2242  Economy / Services / Re: WHO WANTS TO SPLIT THE PRIZE- NEED HELP! on: April 17, 2014, 03:34:22 PM
Very good effort.
I've posted a new episode.
Good luck!
And this time - feel free to comment on the thread itself. All adds to the fun and you might get some hints as we go along. You'll also need to contact us to get the rest of the prize. Last time someone swept it without letting us know...

I think the funny thing is that a big chunk of sellers are selling because "sheeps are selling, price will go down, so i will short as well". So everyone thinks that everyone else is an idiot and they are the smart ones who are just taking advantage of them.

Keynsian beauty contest. Not just guessing how sheepy other people are, but how sheepy the sheep think other sheep are, ad infinitum.

Did the dumping start before the anouncement was made public?

Look, at this point these announcements dont matter. Traders are just using them as entry and exit points. I think most people who wanted to pull their funds off exchanges have already done so in China.

However, its the future difficulty of getting money into exchanges which is bearish.

Meanwhile, China traders who remain on exchanges remain as kamakazee as ever.

They matter because, right or wrong, traders do react to them!

Has anyone already pointed out the obvious that the 18-04 deadline might be true?

Is it at 12 midnight?

My thoughts exactly. China fud isn't remotely over until 18th is over, and then only if pboc go through with it.

What tells you it's gonna happen fast?

everyone and their aunt have been waiting on their sidelines to catch the bottom, everyone convinced they are smarter than the next. like some huge game of chicken. these people *want* to buy. they are frightened. their fear just needs an outlet, right now they are afraid that they are catching a knife, but that will quickly change to the terror of missing the boat.

every move ever is made of that.

This. Once the greed of "man I could have bought at 350 yesterday" will be overtaken by fear of "oh my god I may miss this train completely" people start making hasty buy decisions, followed by hasty sell decisions when it turns around on a 5-minute candle, rinse repeat, because human emotions are the shortest route to poverty.

sgbett, does not it feel nice being a hodler and watching the things you've experienced twice already unfold on unsuspecting newbies? So much fun Smiley

It IS a lot of fun, honestly.  All these newbs coming on here thinking they know everything.

Ahhh, but we were newbs just a year ago.  We need to have some compassion.  Wink  I guess the only thing I can say is that we tried to learn from others mistakes and instead of panic selling just held on through the ups and downs.  I can honestly say I am very thankful we have done that!  Now we just calmly buy when we hit lows like a couple days ago.  It is still a bit depressing when the price drops but I am not too worried about it.

The fear of "missing the boat" actually has some truth to it.  Newbies would be better off just buying now.  We might drop a little, but this is about as low as it is going to get before the next big "bubble" "pump" "ATH" or whatever you want to call it. Wink

Today's noobs are next cycle's senior members.
By the way, how long did it take to find the address in your Sig?!

"Feeding someone's ego with constant adoration and commentary"

Are you actually familiar with urban dictionary? It is hardly authoritative.

FWIW, the actual origins are from a treatment for drowning. I don't think many people got saved that way.

I took my life in my hands when I clicked that link. Fortunately, I had seen the QI episode and thought it would probably go to this. Also, they didn't have movie cameras in the 19th century.

If I am not mistaken, this run will take Bitcoin all the way to 6500-7000 USD (based on how it rose last bull run from 60 to around 1200).
There might be some flashcrashes on the way but the major correction will come when the price is at the range of 6500-7000 USD.
I have been buying coins and even today I made a fiat transfer to Bitstamp so fresh cash is on the way. I still have significiant cash reserves to push the coin higher if it is necessary. Right now I do not recommend to short. The odds are that the price will go pretty high. Who am I to stop BTC running even towards 10 000 USD?

That is one heck of an assumption and the thinking that lies behind every speculative bubble in history.
I'm not going to put a ceiling price on bitcoin, but I won't make assumptions like that either!

yeah lol.... cant trust fools to buy when it's cheap..... and you cant trust them to stop buying when it's expensive! mania knows no ceilings.

The strangest/funniest thing is the change in sentiment from just 2 days ago. It's like a bipolar switch. Bam... and it's a bull market.
It means most likely it's a bull trap, and people are all exuberant because they've taken their longs already.

I meant "Bam... and suddenly [people are assuming] it's a bull market."
I won't call it either way myself but wouldn't be surprised if there was a big pullback.

Anyone want to speculate on the effects to Bitcoin when this happens ?

http://www.theguardian.com/technology/2014/apr/14/facebook-e-money-transfer-service-europe

We knew this was coming. Others will too (Google...?).
Not sure what I think. Bitcoin has a good headstart in terms of regulation, but Facebook has the bigger network and the clout to catch up fast.
Possibility of an integrated service or users combining them in some way?
Facebook is also centralised, which bitcoin is not.
Not an existential threat, anyway.
2254  Economy / Speculation / Re: [Cosmopolis] Prepare for Bitcoin $266 Retest on: April 15, 2014, 08:42:36 AM
....TA does not forecast. TA is risk management.

Of course. It's just about probabilities and based on human emotions.
True i guess it's only based on his feelings and that he feels that his feelings gotta be right wich doesn't really mean it's going to happen.
You can't predict future..

Which is just one of the reasons that 'prediction' threads like this one are so asinine...
Best TA I've seen on these boards are the ones that suggest different scenarios and key price points, not the ones that say 'xxx is going to happen by yyy'.
2255  Economy / Speculation / Re: [service request] Chinese ban alerts on: April 14, 2014, 07:56:06 PM
I would like some type of alert on my phone every time China bans and unbans bitcoin, an exchange bank account is closed, reopened, some new deposit method is added, etc.

A different approach would be to compose news alerts when the price dives or spikes, since this invariably happens before the news is released.
2256  Bitcoin / Bitcoin Discussion / Re: The best Bitcoin cold storage? on: April 14, 2014, 01:53:25 PM
If you can remember the password used to encrypt the private key, who not just make the private key the SHA256 hash of the password? Then there's no need to store anything.

True.
With the BIP0038 approach, you have both more risk (you can lose the QR code) and more security ("2 factor").
Acknowledged. My real thought here is that many of these storage options seemed designed to outlast their owners. As such they should perhaps be self-contained and not rely on a password stored within a fragile skull.

(Actually, some of them seem designed to outlast the internet.)

Quote
Also, the passphrase for a direct SHA256 output needs to be *very* secure, as there are already many automated brainwallet harvester out there. I don't want to imagine how much hashingpower they are throwing at this. Your brainwallet is attacked since the instant it exists.
Really? If I transfer 100 BTC to a new brainwallet, how does anyone know that the address is a brainwallet that is worth attacking? Are people attacking every address that has significant funds?

Yes. And the attacks are very sophisticated and powerful.

2259  Economy / Speculation / Re: Wall Observer BTC/USD - Bitcoin price movement tracking & discussion on: April 13, 2014, 05:12:49 PM
Today something dawned on me:

We can actually start seeing signs of "sellers' exhaustion" in volume and price action, but what is fascinating is that, different from the previous cycle, there is no sign yet of "buyers' appetite" re-appearing correspondingly.

Despair

Don't think so. "Apathy" is more like it, imo.

I think a lot of people are getting tired of the bullshit... and probably thinking that BTC prices should be more in line with the fundamentals.. in the $750-$850 arena.

$750 valuation based on what?

The fat lady has not yet sung. Sang. Whatever. Chinese exchanges are still open for business, people trading as long as they can.
-> I'm not making any assumptions until early next week.
And yes, I'm pretty sure the train was, like nail, irony.
