There's one feature there that I don't see in Bitminter- guiminer (and Deepbit's website) gives me a running tally of the bitcoins I've minted. Bitminter doesn't seem to do that.

Yes, BitMinter also does that on the website. Your balance is shown on the "account details" page, the one you get to right after logging in on the website. Your balance is updated immediately when you get paid, which is when a block is created (with prepay on, which is default) or after it is later confirmed (with prepay perk turned off).

Note that Deepbit is 3.5 times our hashrate, so blocks are not created as frequently on BitMinter.

You can have the live stats play a sound every time a block is created so you can hear the coins dropping into your account.

Live stats: http://bitminter.com/livestats/big
Complete block list: http://bitminter.com/blocks

Also I never got an email from the email confirmation robot.

It may have ended up in your spamfolder. Or your mail server may have rejected it outright as spam. I never send spam, but you never know how mailservers will behave. Email has unfortunately become an unreliable medium of communication. We have 5000 users (50%) with confirmed email addresses. Email is optional so I don't know how many of the other 50% tried but failed to register an email address.

Finally having to use one of my existing accounts at another website seems sketchy.

It's not sketchy at all. It's OpenID. It means you have one less password to remember. Also, some of the OpenID providers have cool features. With Google you can get two-factor authentication to make your accounts much safer. And it's free. Try it with Google Authenticator on your cellphone.

That said, I do have old-fashioned name+password authentication on my TODO list, as well as Facebook login. This is low priority, though, as OpenID works very well and there are other more important issues to solve.

The website is back up again. Sorry for the downtime this morning.

It was only the website, mining was proceeding as normal. The web server process locked up and did not respond at all. Sad

im having all sorts of weird errors on top of the site being down...

BitFORCE (/dev/cu.usbserial-00001324) ERROR: Extraneous data received: NONCE-FOUND:737AD686
2012.09.08 [22:02]  BitFORCE (/dev/cu.usbserial-00001324) ERROR: ZFX command timed out. Retries: 0

If the BFL unit takes too long to respond you get a timeout message. If later it finally sends a response you get an "extraneous data" message because the miner is no longer expecting any response.

If you get a lot of that it can be because your BFL units are throttling. When they throttle they stop responding for a moment.

I'm getting "Duplicate proof of work" rejects a lot in cgminer, but the rejects don't seem to show up in my bitminter stats.  Are these shares really getting rejected?  I've messed around with intensity (tried 13, 9 and 7 on cgminer 2.7.5), and it doesn't seem to have any effect.  Any suggestions?

If you send in the same proof of work multiple times you'll get 1 accepted and no rejects - the work is, after all, accepted. If the network between you and the server is a bit unstable then this can happen once in a while and it's not harmful.

If it happens often it could be a problem with the miner. Maybe something with your config?

Are there any news/progress with roll-n-time support for cgminer?
Will this feature be available soon?

Should be done today I hope, but needs some testing too.

I hope it will be up and running sometime this weekend. We'll find out soon. Smiley

I found my first block ever!

Congrats!

It's also a record. We've never had 17 blocks on the same (UTC) day before. Shocked

Hehe, yes, 15 blocks and still time for more.  Grin

This has us listed as the 4th largest pool on http://blockchain.info/pools

Glad that block is behind us!

kujayhawk and salcox, could you contact me about getting your mint race prize, please? Smiley

Btw, dynamic avatar images not working in this forum anymore?

Off topic, but could you add an API to display worker hashrate and/or shares/min

Yes, that will be in the API.
2269  Bitcoin / Pools / Re: Best Pool as of August 2012? on: September 03, 2012, 01:56:55 PM
Yes, it means they pay stale shares. I'm not sure how they tell those from invalid shares, but according to their websites and forum threads, there are five pools that do, four of which are PPS.

I guess they keep track of old work for a while so they pay for work that is "too old" but not "too too old". Wink Doesn't make sense to pay for work that was stale 30 minutes ago.

BTW, that post is a work in progress - if anything is wrong, let me know. I spent a day off sick from work reading pool threads, and I might have lost my mind at some point. Wink

I was sure Deepbit doesn't pay stale shares. They pay out orphaned ("invalid") blocks though.

Maybe I'm wrong and I should also start reading all the pool threads. But it does sound like a fast way to lose one's mind.

Details on pools fees and payments can be found here: https://bitcointalk.org/index.php?topic=104664.0

Tongue

Yeah, yeah, rub it in Cheesy

Btw, what does "pay stales" mean? Do that many pools pay for stale proofs of work ("shares")?

I thought only one pool did that, which closed down. The name eludes me right now.
2271  Bitcoin / Pools / Re: Best Pool as of August 2012? on: September 03, 2012, 01:24:13 PM
Sorry, MtRed do payout txn fees on PPS, part of the reason they pay on blockfind I am told Smiley

https://bitcointalk.org/index.php?topic=15929.msg1128174#msg1128174

Ah, I stand corrected. My apologies.

Interesting, they delay PPS payouts so they can include transaction fees in the payout. Looks like a good way to include tx fees on PPS pools.

Maybe other PPS pools will take that route too, rather than calculate in some average tx fee value. Time will show.
2272  Bitcoin / Pools / Re: Best Pool as of August 2012? on: September 03, 2012, 12:26:48 PM
If you want the least variance (PPS) and transaction fees paid out, Mt. Red would make more sense.

If you want PPS and transaction fees paid out then you are out of luck. That pool doesn't exist.

In the future when transaction fees go up even more we will see PPS pools paying above what they today call "zero fee", because it isn't actually zero fee (transaction fees are not paid out).

Is there no API for earnings/payouts?

No, there is only public data so far.

I am going to add an API with worker stats. What kind of data would you like to have accessible regarding earnings/payouts?
2274  Bitcoin / Pools / Re: Mint Race Weekend #2, win BCC cards from Bitcurex! on: September 02, 2012, 08:34:33 PM
The race is now over!

A big thanks to our sponsor Bitcurex. This was a lot of fun! Smiley Thanks also to everyone who took part, and congratulations to the winners!

The top 3 winners will find a BTC prize in their BitMinter account now. All 10 winners will be contacted to receive their Bitcurex cards. If you didn't register your email address on BitMinter perhaps you can do so. This way I am sure that the correct person gets the prize. Should you not have a use for the card you could take P4man up on his offer to buy one.

If you didn't win, don't despair. You can buy a card from https://shop.bitcurex.com. You can also compete in the next mint race!

If you would like to sponsor the next mint race with prizes, or you have ideas for prizes, email me at operator (at) bitminter.com (or PM me in this forum).

Isokivi was a bit too quick and created a block just before the race started. But now he strikes back with a block that beats even PasProfeta's. Isokivi moves into 1st place.

Hehe, I came home and looked at the screen, had to look twice to be sure I was reading the hashrate right. I've never seen a GPUMAX run that big before.

Thanks for doing such a big GPUMAX run, Fefox. It was a great test for the pool.

At 2.5 TH/s we had tiny memory usage, bandwidth usage with lots to spare and CPU usage barely above one core running full speed. The CPU has 4 cores + hyperthreading. So I feel fairly confident we can do well over 10 TH/s before reaching capacity.

What does this mean for ASICs? Maybe the server could handle ASICs as it is. I can't be sure as we now have many miners with big ASIC orders. But if we can "maybe" handle ASICs without changes, then we can handle them piece of cake once rollntime and higher difficulty work is up and running. Looking good!

Yes, we will add more servers in the future, but it's important to make the most of each server to keep costs down. Competition between mining pools is very tough.
2277  Bitcoin / Pools / Re: Mint Race Weekend #2, win BCC cards from Bitcurex! on: September 02, 2012, 06:27:04 AM
A nice block by darkice landed him in 3rd position. kujayhawk takes 8th and lenny just barely squeezes into 10th, leaving zopyx, Phraust and benny32 out of luck for prizes.

The best hashes are looking very hard to beat, but we will probably still see some changes in the lower rankings.

On the hashrate side of things we see narousberg arriving on the scene and Garr255 pushing up on the hashrate charts. The hashrate needed to show up on the top50 list keeps going up.
2278  Bitcoin / Pools / Re: Mint Race Weekend #2, win BCC cards from Bitcurex! on: September 01, 2012, 08:00:52 PM
HALF TIME!

Someone do a little dance or something. Grin

After Fefox's hashrate returned to normal we have seen ScoobyDoo and PuppetMaster both boost their hashrates much higher than normal for a time.

Also salcox was able to create another bitcoin block, this one much better than the first one. Still, even this is not good enough to wrest control of first place away from PasProfeta who is looking very secure indeed. It does however put salcox in second place so far and looking very hard to beat.

Recently darkice appeared, quickly placing himself #1 on the top50 hashrate list, just above amazingrando. Also singular and Ayrat pushing up among the top 10 hashrates further adds to the fierce competition we are seeing right now.

And yet noone has been able to touch PasProfeta so far. And not for lack of trying. One of the smallest miners is sticking it to the big guns. Is he untouchable? We will find out soon. Only 24 hours of the 48 hours race left.

Meanwhile, benny32's position is looking very precarious. Can he hold on to a prize position? It is not likely if we see as many blocks in the second half as in the first half.
2279  Bitcoin / Pools / Re: Mint Race Weekend #2, win BCC cards from Bitcurex! on: September 01, 2012, 02:49:08 PM
Three new blocks have been minted by zopyx, slipbye and benny32. Rankings in the first post will be updated in a moment.

And here's something we haven't seen before. A GPUmax run pushes Fefox up to 1500 GH/s! Pool hashrate at 2.5 TH/s. That's a new record for highest miner hashrate and for pool hashrate as well!
2280  Bitcoin / Pools / Re: Mint Race Weekend #2, win BCC cards from Bitcurex! on: September 01, 2012, 08:26:54 AM
gigavps hits another block. It's not good enough to take the first place from PasProfeta, but it does improve his current second place, making it that much harder to beat.

Miners don't seem deterred by the minting we have seen so far. The pool hashrate seems to be inching up towards 1200 GH/s.

Update: oops, missed that micheletegon had an NMC block as well. Not sure if I will bother to dig the bitcoin hash out of those merged namecoin blocks though, as they will probably be pushed off the rankings soon.
