2381  Other / Meta / Re: What did theymos do with 200K? on: May 29, 2015, 05:25:33 AM
Damn,

During this recent downtime i was hoping that theymos would throw a surprise and unveil the long awaited new forum software. I was hoping the "hack" was a cover to spring us a nice little surprise.  Cheesy

The new forum software looks like its taking a long time to develop, hope things are on track. I have no right to question, especially since i did not donate anything toward the development of the new forum software, but it would be nice to have an update as to when it will go live. A ballpark figure would do just fine, imo. I would really like an option where i can un-subscribe from a thread that i would no longer wish to follow. I haven't seen such an option or maybe one of you folks can guide me on how i could do so with the existing forum software Smiley.

That's quite optimistic of you especially in the bitcoin space. When a hack happens in bitcoin, news of "lost" coins usually follows. Just be happy bitcointalk didn't get Goxed.... well I guess it sort of did.

Why should bitcointalk be goxed? I think that no private keys of btc address are stored in the server, and the attacker was searching only the access data of all the forum users (probably to make another attack on the various exchange because all we know that a lot of users are using the same password in the various sites).
2382  Other / Meta / Re: Are Forum signatures really useful ? on: May 29, 2015, 05:19:27 AM
If signature campaigns are banned:

1. Accounts won't be bought/sold as people mainly buy farm accounts for signature campaigns.
2. Accounts won't be held as collateral and some members will even stop lending due to this.
3. Members (except scammers) will stop creating new accounts as now their account won't have any value.
4. Activity as well would be affected

I support banning signature campaigns if the first 3 points do take place as I don't support these account sales and find it immoral to farm accounts just to earn few bits.

I also support your idea, ban the signature campaigns and the problems will be resolved ... at least we can try for 1-2 months and see what will happen. People (that who were banned) are still continuing to create or farm account every single day and I remember a couple of months ago the things were more different than now.

I once got this message too but here's how it happened with me. I was using Blockchain.info and Electrum wallet. So I had some coins in the blockchain wallet and I tried sending them, it showed sent but they didn't hit the blockchain, I entered the Tx ID at several blockchain sites to check but nothing, so I panicked and thought maybe it's getting hacked.

Immediately after that I exported the key out of blockchain and imported it into my electrum and pushed the transaction and it went through but it showed the warning message when I checked it on the blockchain.info site, which you described above but it did went away after a day I think. So my guess it will go away on it's own in a day or two.

No, that warning will stay "for ever" or at least it will continue to appera on blockchain.info blockexplorer but not in the other BTC blockExplorer. A double spend it is an easy thing, and now a lot of people start to do it (with the use of the replace-by-fee function and a little bit of lucky).

O meglio , è estremamente pericoloso usare blockchain.info.... e basta.
2386  Bitcoin / Bitcoin Discussion / Re: Using bitcoin adddress as email on: May 27, 2015, 06:46:07 PM
It would be interesting to use bitcoin addresses as email address.
Try it out:
"yourbitcoinaddress"@bitcoinmessages.info

Eg:
1KWd23GZ4BmTMo9zcsUZXpWP4M8hmxZwRU@bitcoinmessages.info

Could be a good idea, the problem is that even if the RFC states that local-part (before the @) of the address is case sensitive, most e-mail providers make the e-mail address case insensitive to avoid confusion.

And we know case sensitivity is crucial in a Bitcoin address...

No. Email is something you need to remember and use with ease, so good luck remembering these lines of numbers and letters of bitcoin address. For normal daily uses bitcoin address as email is total overkill and is counterproductive, too long, case sensitive. Maybe it will be only liked by ultra bitcoin nerds who want some geeky looking emails...

I know some people (in real life) that know their personal bitcoin address and they can spell or say it without any problem and especially by heart. I know it is against the bitcoin philosophy, 1-time-use but a I also think email address with a bitcoin address is not really a good thing (we need an alias system added directly in the bitcoin code).

Did you want to say "bitcointalk" not bitcoin? No one can hack bitcoin  Grin. However this is the thread with all the information:

2388  Economy / Speculation / Re: Someone help me understand this... on: May 27, 2015, 06:32:17 PM
Wait until there really is a big crash. There will be hundreds of new threads created every day by newbie one post accounts. They will all predict the impending death of Bitcoin, but suddenly disappear after it starts going back up in price again.

I've definitely noticed this. One guy that only ever comes around nowadays to be a good samaritan and warn us about big crashes and possible death is kwukduck but I haven't seen him in quite sometime. Guarantee if/when we dip below 230, he'll have a new thread up about a huge crash coming. Smh.  Roll Eyes

But a thread here isn't the cause of the bitcoin price crash (only in an economic/speculation point of view). I also think they spread FUD for buy some cheap bitcoin, but it is only a theory (a 'theory') and no, they are not paid to spread FUD and useless posts.

PS: I really don't want to think bitcoin is only a speculation, c'mon people (oh yes, I forgot ... we are in the speculation forum section).

Dude, what can I say? You are not only a compulsive bullshit artist, but you've also mostly lost touch with reality. What buildings? What full time employees? What tax implications? One is true:
Quote
I'm no expert on the matter
.

We are discussing the feasibility of creating our own hosting location, having our own facilities, not giving another random 3rd party access to the server. I thought you were aware that the hosting company staff were the weak link in this hack. The way to get around that, is to change to a facility operated by an employee of the Bitcointalk. That would involve building our own infrastructure, hiring staff to monitor its physical location, etc. That would also involve owning property to build on.

If we just rent server space from an already established company, we face the same issues. Not having complete trust of the people who have access to the server. So if we are talking about just changing hosts to something that isn't a large operation in a giant datacenter to a shared location with a couple of other people, we still have to worry about the human factor.

Ecatly, I have proposed in the past days the creation of an "home made" server to hosting the forum but I do not know if it is a really *possibilty or not.

*With all the money spent in the creation of the epochtalk forum software.
2391  Other / Meta / Re: Are these attacks preventable? on: May 27, 2015, 06:03:28 PM
because banning their sale wouldn't stop it from going on

That's like saying: We don't ban child porn, because there will always be pedophiles.

You can't prevent anything completely , but you can reduce the bad impact and stop it from happening on your forum.

Woow, really nice point of view... now I think the things should change here in the forum (only for a question of security, nothing else).

...
This is true, but how much time would it take to really monitor all account sales?  You would need at least one full time position to do this.  Maybe the forum staff feel that their time is better spent elsewhere?

Maybe with a single forum rules you can discourage the forum account buying/selling (but a lot of censorship is not really a good thing, but if the forum is always attacked ... the things *must* change).
2392  Other / Meta / Re: A few staff members been removed recently? on: May 27, 2015, 05:57:32 PM

Well unless malevolent becomes active and proves that he's still in full control of his account, then he would be likely to retain his position as a Global Moderator. He hasn't been around for weeks now, but I'm pretty sure he received the email from theymos.

Maybe he has received an email from theymos, but he 'is not' in control of his forum account (who knows). After this another attack I am not surprised anymore (so everything is possible).

PS: However, well done admin Wink and good luck with your research (C'mon people theymos will pay a 15 XAU bounty ~ 20k dollars / 75 BTC  if you will find the real identity of the 'hacker').

SO glad I stopped using BTER months before this happened shame to see it happened and many other exchanges getting hacked. but the question comes did they really get hacked or just another cover up story to move away. If really got hacked and everyone at loss then indeed it is a shame and is going to take some work to recover from it or to even continue business. I think with every exchange should have some sort of reserve funds that have enough capital and insurance for unseen events happening to put into the business as a security locked up sealed until such events happen and can easily recover with insurances.

I do not think the hacker(s) attacked the exchange with a remote attack.... what the hell, how it is possible attack an offline computer (a cold wallet)  Roll Eyes?

Nice reply.

However Bter we are still waiting a full explanation of what was happened that day.
2395  Other / New forum software / Re: The 1.5 million dollar (5067 bitcoin) new bitcoin talk forum. on: May 27, 2015, 05:36:14 PM
I don't really see this excitement among members.
Unfortunately, those coins could have been spent in a better way i think.

Disclaimer: i really like SMF. I don't want to change this.

Note:only thing i'd change is, the hashing of secret answers, maybe a bit more won't be bad for the security.
I lie SMF, I am really used to it, and I am very used to it. I have been on this account for 40 days, which is 960 hours. I do admit the forum is looking very old and in my opinion not the prettiest. I would definitely have to get used to it, but I would rather spend a couple hours getting uesd to it then having to still use the current version.

We should also think about the security (in the first place)... the 'design' is a secondary thing. I also like SMF but (why not) I will continue to use the forum (with the new *software) but they should improve the security and use a secure inter. service provider , or host the forum on an 'home-made' strong build server.
Security is definitely a top priority with the forum. Probably ahead of the design for me as well. Since this forum is about bitcoin, and if any accounts related to bitcoin are compromised, money could be stolen, and due to the irreversible nature of bitcoin, any stolen money is completely gone with no chance of recovery.
I would third that.  In fact, I would much rather prefer this forum goes through a big security upgrade (hello, we need 2FA???) instead of upgrading the design and features.  With the new forum, the security might even be worse...

This, a 2FA will improve the forum 100 times... I do not know why they don't integrate it. I think the admin should add it absolutely in the new forum software (epochtalk).

Security is first priority, features are second priority, and design is third. Security has to be top notch, because we transfer money here and we do high value irreversible transactions. 2FA should definitely be here by now, its a bit late for that.

Security is the unique importan thing in my opinion, if there is a good security the design is really easy to do...
2396  Other / Meta / Re: The server hack of May 2015 and it's effects on *YOUR* accounts on: May 27, 2015, 05:31:01 PM
Who takes responsibility IF someone faces monetary losses because of THIS incident ?

No one, just like every other hack.

The person responsible is the hacker and they should be held accountable, but the forum as well as any other site shouldn't be expected or relied upon to keep your info invincible or 100% safe because things like this can always happen. It's also the user's responsibility to make sure all their other accounts are safe and if your other accounts get hacked because of the leak then thats your fault for having poor security practices. The only thing you wouldn't be responsible for is your forum account getting potentially hacked but if you've changed your details then all should be fine.

This is obvious, but it is also obvious that he will not repay the damage to the entire forum. It is not an user responsibility, if they used a weak password like "1234567890"... because the hacked gained the access to the DB (with a reset of the root's pwd Undecided).
2397  Other / Meta / Re: Just remove signatures already. As in delete, disable, gone. on: May 27, 2015, 05:08:01 PM
The effect of not doing anything about these "ad sig" campaigns is becoming rather obvious now.

There are very few technical people bothering to post much at all and the vast majority of nearly all posts that I see (and I have blocked much of the worse boards on this forum) are just rubbish posts (made of course by ad-sig posters).

Basically those that used to find this forum useful and interesting are now "moving away" and I suspect this will continue unless the new forum works out some better balance.

I'm sure some whinging whining ad-sig posters are going to respond to this post with "but I should be allowed to earn my 0.0001 BTC" and yes, unfortunately that is what this forum believes you should be allowed to do.

To put it plainly "the ad-siggers won" and their victory is a forum completely full of useless posts made by kids earning pocket money (a victory for "free speech and capitalism" might be what the spinners would call it).

Can I ask you where they are moving?

However I think the unique way for stop (at all) the useless posts is : ban the signature campaigns; but it will be a form of censorship and I think it is contrary with the philosophy of this forum.

2398  Bitcoin / Bitcoin Discussion / Re: Should i create a new Node ? on: May 27, 2015, 05:02:26 PM
If you have some Bitcoin and wish to see Bitcoin continue growing.. go ahead and host a new node. It will greatly help the Bitcoin network. Remember, every person count. Thus, every nodes count.

He does not need 'some bitcoin' to create and host a BTC node, he should only download the bitcoin core client - download the entire blockchain and open (from your router) the port *8333

*Configure your home’s router (assuming that you have one.) It’s critical that you forward port 8333 on your router to the IP address of the computer that is running your node. If you don’t do this, you will not be contributing your bandwidth to the network and should not run the node. You can check that your port forwarding works using the “check node” tool on Bitnodes.io when your node is running. If you’re running a software firewall on the machine running the node, you’ll also want to ensure that you create a rule to open up port 8333.

Are there any future plans also for EUR / GBP denominated cards?

I think in the future months they will give us the possibility to request an EUR plastic card, I have used only few times the card due the exchange rate + fees from € to dollar (it would be really nice to have an € card).

There are some very clever hackers hiding on this forum and in bitcoin-world in general. You need to stay on your toes at all times.

You can always leave and also the OP can always leave . However, yes this time due a social engineering attack... really impressive how it was easy.

Actually Theymos already said it wasn't a social engineering attack, they just havent said what it was yet.

im betting theymos's password is "theymos is AWESOME" but seriously the amount this forum has earned for him you think hed keep on his toes about stuff. ddos attacks and hacking.

what would you suggest for preventing both? I'm sure theymos would be very grateful if you could lend your ideas. he might have money to invest but it doesn't grant him unlimited knowledge. its nt as simple as you make it sound. many multi million websites have been exploited and ddos

iv actually been through ddoss suggestions on here in the past. dont know if they didnt like my idea or was just ignored. id set up a few cheap vps load balancers. set software can only respond to certain requests so it filters out damaging traffic to the main website. i know ddos attacks are getting bigger and more complex but so are defenses. and in fairness this isnt a massive site so dosnt attract the worst ddos or hackers mostly because its a forum and little info/money to be gained from it. i do however respect the fact passwords where atleast encrypted... see  alot bigger sites fall at that point

But in this case it was 'used' also a soc. eng. practice... and you can build the security that you want but if an employee will reset the root password it will be really a problem  Undecided.

However I think (all) we are waiting more info. from theymos about this situation.
