241  Alternate cryptocurrencies / Speculation (Altcoins) / ETH - will it go lower on: September 10, 2017, 03:54:12 PM
It's currently $286 on coinmarketcap. I need to buy some ETH to participate in an ICO soon. Is now a good time to buy or do you think it will go down more in the next few days?
242  Alternate cryptocurrencies / Altcoin Discussion / Re: When to dump shitcoin? on: September 02, 2017, 12:46:28 PM
Thanks all! I did research when I invested and the coin was going strong. The coin has been around for several years but now the project has gone seriously sideways and the dev team has moved on to another project which they're trying to merge but it's a hot mess.

I made more than 20% in my portfolio of other coins, especially btc since I bought before the huge rise so I'll sell this pos and be more educated in the future.
243  Alternate cryptocurrencies / Altcoin Discussion / When to dump shitcoin? on: September 01, 2017, 07:16:02 PM
I put some $ into a coin a couple of months ago. And since then it's gone down a lot and stayed down. A deadline for a project update was recently met and advertised but the coin didn't even bump up. If I got out now I would lose about 20% of my initial investment.

How do you decide when it's time to dump a coin for a loss? I don't need the money but i see these other coins going up and i keep thinking about the opportunity cost of having my $ sitting in the shitcoin.
244  Alternate cryptocurrencies / Altcoin Discussion / Re: What's your favorite 3 altcoins and why? on: August 31, 2017, 09:57:39 AM
I haven't made a lot of $ on these but I'm rooting hard for them because I think we need coins that facilitate  low cost transfer of funds: omg, Dash and pay. I also love nexus because I like how it's outside the box.
245  Alternate cryptocurrencies / Altcoin Discussion / Re: ICOs should be Regulated but not by Government? on: August 30, 2017, 06:18:42 PM
Wow! Lots of tinfoil hats on these boards  Huh

Yes ICOs should probably be regulated and probably by government.

Whoever floated the first idea of commercial entities regulating icos must be really young or have lived under a rock in 2008-2009.

That model was already tried out with mortage backed securities and credit rating agencies.  Issuers of those securities shopped around until a cra was willing to give them a good rating even though they were shit securities. Cras wanted to make $ and not lose clients so they gave everyone who stepped through the door a good rating.

Guess how that ended? Major financial crisis and government has stepped in to regulate CRAs.
246  Alternate cryptocurrencies / Altcoin Discussion / Re: CANADA to regulate ICO. Who is next? on: August 27, 2017, 07:39:28 PM
This is step forward, when governments starts to regulate ICO`s they are here to stay. I saw this links you shared, but they are
very long and with many not important informations for most of us here, can someone share some shorter version?
Who is next is just guessing game, Canada is big country and US will follow, then China, Japan, Australia, EU.. couple more countries
and that is whole world. I wonder will Canada make some list of good and bad alt-coins, like they will favor some alt-coins, but some
will be forbidden. This list can make some coins to increase in price a lot.

Regulation will give people confidence about the legitimacy of an ico and the team behind it. However, if they adopt similar rules that are for other types of securities now, like the prospectus and requirement to sell only through a dealer, that would make it very expensive to have an ico and more expensive for us as someone has to pay the middle man. I think that would stifle innovation in the ico space (along with stifling scams)
247  Alternate cryptocurrencies / Altcoin Discussion / Re: CANADA to regulate ICO. Who is next? on: August 27, 2017, 06:38:45 PM
I think the European Union will soon regulate ICOs. There is so much over the top regulation of the securities market in the EU that I'm surprised the EU hasn't issued a directive already.
248  Alternate cryptocurrencies / Altcoin Discussion / Re: How to know and learn an ico project. on: August 27, 2017, 10:38:12 AM
You can subscribe to newsletters like icodigest and crush crypto and read ico reviews from various sources. You'll soon see what these reviewers look at so then you can judge any ico
249  Alternate cryptocurrencies / Altcoin Discussion / Re: The future of ICOs on: August 27, 2017, 10:18:50 AM
I'm not sure I really agree. There are already too many icos for a normal person to digest. I only follow at most 2-3 at a time. What will happen most likely is that people who want to invest will get to know an industry or two and pick what to invest in. I think that would be great. It would be the converse to what you describe with battle of marketing budgets. As people specialize in an area or two they will be able to better judge icos, and not just pick the ones that have a lot of marketing. I think unfortunately that is happening now. Lots of people throw money into an ico because of slick marketing without knowing anything about the project
250  Alternate cryptocurrencies / Speculation (Altcoins) / Re: What a bloodbath... on: August 25, 2017, 07:52:08 PM
I'm not sureI would call it a bloodbath. Most tokens are down a few percent in the last 24h. Some are up. Unless you need cash now, hodl what you've got and buy more of what is in the crapper
251  Alternate cryptocurrencies / Altcoin Discussion / What's your split between altcoins and btc on: August 24, 2017, 07:55:37 PM
I think I need to pick a strategy to invest a bit every month. Right now, about 40% of my portfolio is btc and the rest is split between 5 different coins. I don't have a reason for this split. I'm still pretty new at this so My holdings are pretty small still. So I'm wondering what % do you split between btc and alts and why you picked that split?
252  Alternate cryptocurrencies / Altcoin Discussion / Re: Best Current & Upcoming ICO's on: August 24, 2017, 07:23:37 PM
I'm watching kyber and enigma, though the recent hacks don't exactly inspire confidence. I use their competitors product though which my company pays a $$$$$ every year in subscription fees for something that looks like it's from the 1980s.  I'd love to see enigma compete in that space.

I looked at bowhealth and while the company seems reputable I don't understand the markets for their product.
253  Alternate cryptocurrencies / Speculation (Altcoins) / Will the ignis crowdsale boost nxt and ardor? on: August 24, 2017, 06:57:28 PM
The topic question says it all. Does nxt still have some life left in it?
254  Alternate cryptocurrencies / Speculation (Altcoins) / Re: Golem released next version on: August 24, 2017, 05:02:15 PM
Ugh i missed the first big pump. Hope there's another one!
255  Alternate cryptocurrencies / Altcoin Discussion / Re: Importance of not being a 'security' after the SEC DAO report on: August 19, 2017, 07:23:44 PM
I pay attention. If it's a security and it's organized under the laws of the us, I'm not willing to take a chance. The SEC will come after the company for all it is worth and investors will lose everything.
256  Economy / Speculation / Re: BITCOIN = TULIP BULB MANIA? on: August 18, 2017, 01:41:54 AM
I absolutely think we're in a bubble with respect to btc. I don't think it will crash never to recover (because i very much believe in the long term value of btc) but there will be a big correction relatively soon (obviously the question is when).

Some of us are old enough to remember the crazy mania before the tech bubble burst in 2000 and the crazy mania and people swearing house prices would never go down (before the house prices crashed spectacularly in 2008).

I would bet all my bitcoins and other coins I own, heck I'd even bet my new car, that there's no journalist conspiracy to bring down the price of bitcoin.  Roll Eyes
257  Alternate cryptocurrencies / Altcoin Discussion / Where do I ask ico founders stuff? on: August 15, 2017, 02:06:21 AM
Ok I have a really noob question. I'm seriously looking at investing in an ico. But I have some questions for the current team before I pull the trigger. I joined their slack thingie but I'm not sure what it's for. I've read through it and all the questions so far are super basic and repetitive

Can I ask "real" questions on slack or is it just a promo site where all the hard questions are deleted? Or on the bitcoin talk announcement forum? Or should I just email the guy?
258  Other / Meta / Games sub forum on: August 14, 2017, 02:15:42 AM
Not sure this is the right place for my Q. If not, sorry!

I thought I saw a child forum on bitcointalk for games where you can earn coins (not gambling necessarily) but now I can't find it. I think I looked through all the topics.

Does the forum exist or was I dreaming?
259  Other / Off-topic / Re: How to know if altcoin team is credible? on: August 14, 2017, 01:43:52 AM
I'm still new at this but I check linkedin (and check how they are connected to me, through who), check out their past projects and google their names. Also look at their experience, what their skills are etc... some young kids with 2-3 yrs experience and no professional achievements won't get my cash no matter how interesting their project.

I also check to see if the team has been working together a while.

The reverse google image search is also good. I recently heard an accusation that someone founding an ico used someone else's picture
