EPOCH 2 Announcement:

When we first started this project we had no clue how the community would respond in regards to the charity and nominations concept. Would they embrace it, would they care for it or would they simply overlook it? We're proud to say that community surprised us and fully embraced the foundation and its goals!

Its been almost two months since then, time during which we had two Epochs and, as of today, two winners. I'm sure most of you remember, but for our new members, join us on a trip down memory lane for a minute.

Our first winner was Walter Moss, Ph.D. whose project "Can viral molecular structures cause cancer?" was funded with over $1500 with the help of our miners and a separate fundraiser that we personally hosted on our social media pages.  As an extra, we decided it was in Walter's best interest that he would also hold a reddit AMA and he was very excited to do so on their science sub. The AMA was supposed to last 2 hours instead he was there for 5 hours the first night and answered questions for the week to follow! A true champion if you ask us. Not only that, when we asked him if he would consider being a scientific advisor for the foundation it took him no time at all to get back to us and say he'd be delighted to be a part of the team.

Now, it's time to announce the second Epoch's winning nominee!

CryptoGiving! A new mining pool dedicated to giving people an easy way to mine the top cryptocurrencies while simultaneously building tools to give back to real world technology, development and charity.

Here's a excerpt from their website:

Quote
From http://www.cryptogiving.com/?page_id=24

One way we want to accomplish the above is to be as open and transparent in our operations as possible. We want people to know where their hard earned money, hashing power and coins are going. With that, we will seek to be as open and honest in our operations as possible by doing the following:

We will make sure 100% of all direct donations go directly to charity. This means if you don’t want to mine with us, but still want to donate to one of the listed addresses, 100% of your donation will go to charity and non of it will go to our operating expenses

We will always take 50% of the mining fees and put them toward charity. This means that even if we don’t have enough to cover our operating expenses for that month, we will still put the same amount into charity. We will not sacrifice charity donations to cover our operating expenses

We will take the excess and roll them over to the next month’s operating expenses. If we have an excess in operating expense collection for a certain month, we will take that excess and roll it over to the next month. This will allow us to build a ‘bank’ for all operating expenses and as we grow and will allow us to predict and stabilize expenses from month to month. Once we are stable and operating at a surplus,  we’ll either be able to drop the mining fees by a small amount or contribute more to charity

We know there will be bumps along the way. Perhaps we’ll have a server crash or someone will try and DDOS us taking us down. We know things like this are going to happen. However, what we’re looking to build is a solid user base that will stick with us through these trials because they believe in our goals. We’re not perfect IT people and we know there will be mistakes. But with the help of a solid community and honest and trusting users, we will overcome trials and still be  solid framework for crypto currency mining

How do you feel about this new type of pool service? We are interested in the idea and would like to hear the thoughts of our miners and supports. Is this a good fit for EMC2?

Check out their website at http://cryptogiving.com/

awsome coin not selling my coins till atleast 3000 btc ratio

Thank you for your support! We will be able to offer some big donations to science at that point.

I don't get this. I've been mining for almost 12 hours non stop on a P2pool node. During the last few hours I saw diff going down, network hash going down, and, to my surprise, my payouts going down too. The number of blocks found by the P2pool remains pretty much constant. Under these circumstances, shouldn't I see an increase in payout? What am I missing?

Hello sir,

EMC2 block halving occurred as of yesterday. This will account for the payouts being lower. As the coin halves, they become more rare to obtain and should increase value due to rarity alone. Not only that, but Einsteinium has proven itself as a valuable asset to those in the scientific field who are needing extra money though donation.

Mining EMC2 helps real scientists get the money they need for future developments. As coin value increases, so does the donation amount. In the volatile market of cryptocurrency, it's nice to have a coin that is providing aide to serious projects. In the future, we may be able to fund some really BIG SCIENCE. We appreciate your support and I'm sure humanity will too.

Please let us know if you have any more questions.

- Ryan

https://coin-horse.com/?rec=126 , is that pointing to a einsteinium member account or was it a mistake? If you ask me, I think rec=75 looks much better.

That was a mistake on my part (Ryan), the link has been corrected to point directly to the Einsteinium coin section of that site. Thanks for pointing it out.

"rec=75" does look pretty good. You should add it to your signature!

Block halving in less than 24 hours and we are extending Epoch 2 voting to April 21st (Monday). We're looking to give at least 50% more than the first Epoch to the next winner.

The community is getting bigger and bigger. If we keep this up, we can see Einsteinium completely funding some seriously large projects very soon. To the moon? We can fund a project that builds a rocket ship!

Vote while there's still time! http://einsteinium.org/nominations/

Remember, 2% of Total Coins Mined + market value = Donation total amount.

Today marks the anniversary of the passing of the great Albert Einstein.

Here is some information from Wikipedia:

On 17 April 1955, Albert Einstein experienced internal bleeding caused by the rupture of an abdominal aortic aneurysm, which had previously been reinforced surgically by Dr. Rudolph Nissen in 1948.[84] He took the draft of a speech he was preparing for a television appearance commemorating the State of Israel's seventh anniversary with him to the hospital, but he did not live long enough to complete it.[85]

Einstein refused surgery, saying: "I want to go when I want. It is tasteless to prolong life artificially. I have done my share, it is time to go. I will do it elegantly." He died in Princeton Hospital early the next morning at the age of 76, having continued to work until near the end.

During the autopsy, the pathologist of Princeton Hospital, Thomas Stoltz Harvey, removed Einstein's brain for preservation without the permission of his family, in the hope that the neuroscience of the future would be able to discover what made Einstein so intelligent.[87] Einstein's remains were cremated and his ashes were scattered at an undisclosed location.

In his lecture at Einstein's memorial, nuclear physicist Robert Oppenheimer summarized his impression of him as a person: "He was almost wholly without sophistication and wholly without worldliness ... There was always with him a wonderful purity at once childlike and profoundly stubborn.

Albert Einstein did much more than his share for science, technology, and the human race. The Einsteinium Foundation hopes to continue his legacy of giving back to science and to the people who share his dreams of a brighter and bigger future.

are there any new developments community seems quiet.

Always new developments going on behind the scenes. This is Easter weekend though so you can expect us to be quite over the next few days.
251  Alternate cryptocurrencies / Announcements (Altcoins) / Re: [ANN][EMC2] Einsteinium | Funding the future with the future of currency on: April 18, 2014, 08:12:53 AM
Btw does anyone have any ideas on how to get the community involved/growing. We need it to be more active.

Maybe some more bounties (devs do you have any coinage for that?)
Maybe try to make a 'what is einsteinium' video

Idk, something, but we can't be stagnant. And I know we have to be patient, i'd rather see slow growth, i get it. It just pisses me off so many people are giving white-coin attention. If they just rallied behind making a community for emc2, they'd see real profit.

Somehow we need to be 'sexier'...ya get what im saying?

Hey Patient.

We believe the community is growing daily. Were getting more followers on Twitter, Reddit and FB, but more could be done and is being done. As for the video, Ryan is actually in the process of making 3 videos. The first is going to be a intro into Einsteinium, the other two will be directed more in the directions of miners and non crypto but scientific lovers.

Who really know whats behind the whitecoin attention, but sooner or later the smart money will flow into EMC2.

Sexier.... I'm not so sure that science is that sexy.. you have any ideas on how we can make science sexy?

Someone in the polo trollbox said to get richard dawkins on board to increase the sex appeal, lol. Idk tho, ill try to come up with someone.

Thats great Ryan is working on those videos, any guess on when they'll be out?

Are there any press-releases in the works for when our second donation is made?

I've personally seen the work Ryan can do so I'm sure the videos will be nice. I'm not sure how long till there ready though. I'm pretty sure thought the first one should be ready soon. I'm also under the impression that we'll be doing a press release for each and every epoch winner and donation. I assume the press release will be sent out within a few days of the donation being made.

Indeed, a basic video explaining what Einsteinium's benefits will be up this weekend. It would have been up sooner but I am a bit of a perfectionist and I have not been satisfied with such a simple presentation. That being said, sometimes simplicity is the best way to get new people involved. I will wrap up the first video this weekend and it will be posted live on YouTube upon meeting the Foundations approval.

As far as getting the support of celebrity scientists and physicists, if you dig into our twitter you will find that there is already some big names interested in Es. That being said, I don't want to mention any specifics  until we have a proven track record and full support from the interested parties.

We are not stagnant at all, everyday is bringing new opportunity and community response. Einsteinium as a currency has a lot offer this world and people will begin to adopt it as we give them transparency and a proven track record. It's people like YOU that make true change in the world. We are extremely proud to offer you a tool that will make these big ideas a reality. From the bottom of my heart, THANK YOU for all the support.

Voted, but not for the one I thought it would be; I changed my mind after reviewing that candidates.

A few thoughts:
Is it possible to provide brief candidate information in the wallets? Or perhaps notification of voting cycles?
I'd say allow voting in that way but I suspect it would be a programmer's nightmare. Another thought is that maybe you would want people to come here for that information rather than avoid the community.

Like the GPUGRID thing, is there any other coin that already contributes computing power to science calculations? I know there's one that does math problems. Is the foundation considering such? Perhaps partnering with GPUGRID or coming up with our own similar thing?

Thank you for your vote!

Yes, there is currently GridCoin which uses the BOINC infrastructure to help process data through Grid Computing. Einsteinium supports what they are doing and although our coin does not support crunching data through BOINC, we are more than willing to work closely with the GridCoin team in the name of science and our future. We highly respect what they are doing and hopefully we can work together on a big project sometime soon.

Great question by the way.

Blocks that show up in your wallet when mining then disappear are orphans, correct?  Also, is there a way to reduce them?

I spoke with our coin developer about this, here are his words:

Well, first of all use '--scan-time 1' option in cgminer to make sure miner checks frequently if someone on the network has not come with the solution already, otherwise the miner will keep working on a block that has been already solved.

The other thing is to have internet connection with the lowest possible latency and large number of connected peers. This increases the chance that your block 'wins' if two solutions are found within a very close timeframe.

I hope that information helps you!

Epoch 2 voting has begun! Please register and cast your vote for your favorite scientific nominee RIGHT NOW!

http://einsteinium.org/nominations/

As you may already know, Einsteinium automatically donates to community voted scientific projects EVERY MONTH!

Our first ever Epoch had 54.2% of registered users voting for Walter Moss and his project “Can viral molecular structures cause cancer”. The EMC2 donation was composed of an amount of more than $1,000 to further his research in EBV molecular structures. Extra donations made by this growing community (out of their own pocket) also helped him reach his funding goal on experiment.com.

How much can we give this time? That is completely up to the community and market value of EMC2!

Here are some more details from this months voting nominees. Who is your favorite?

What is killing Caribbean corals? Investigating a devastating coral disease.
If we understand what is damaging coral reefs, we can save them. White band disease is responsible for destroying up to 95% of two threatened reef-building coral species in the Caribbean. In spite of the devastating effects of the disease, a pathogen has not been identified. We aim to identify the cause of white band disease using infection experiments in order to develop methods of controlling disease outbreaks!

Flies on the Brain: Can Fruit Flies Aid in Curing Neurodegeneration?
Did you know that fruit flies have brains?! Not only do they have brains but their neurons are very similar to ours and can degenerate in the same way that ours do if we have a neurodegenerative disease. This research aims to use fruit fly larva (maggots) to not only learn about the detailed processes of neurodegeneration but also to engage and excite the next generation of research scientists.

Building an Affordable Drug for Diabetic Wounds
Mend Therapeutics is creating AFFORDABLE drugs for the World’s 371 Mill diabetics who don’t have health insurance. Diabetic complications are catastrophic and include non-healing wounds leading to amputation. We want to develop a protein for diabetic wounds that can be manufactured at low cost, an important step in creating an affordable drug. If all patients, irrespective of economic status, can afford medications, they have a brighter future.

Guys,

Just wanted to pop in with a little update/news regarding our scientific advisory board.

We have teamed up with two people so far who will help to ensure that all our funding goes to worthwhile projects and not junk science.

The first of the two you may already be familiar with as he was the winner of our first vote.

Walter Moss, Ph.D.
Post-Doc: Yale University
Stuny Stoneybrook BS, Chemistry
University of Rochester
MsC Chemistry
University of Rochester
Ph.D. Chemistry (Biological)

The second is
Sander Blok,
Sander holds a Bachelors degree in chemistry from the university of Groningen, a topmasters degree in nanoscience from the university of Groningen,
Ph.D. Candidate in Physics, Leiden University

Sander and Walter will both be reviewing the nominees once a month ensuring that only real science that follows our strict guidelines gets put up to vote.

Walter also gave us this quote to post on our site, I figured I'll share it here before it gets uploaded to the site.

"I feel incredibly privileged to be the very first awardee of The Einsteinium Foundation. The Einsteinium Foundation has provided me with essential support to advance my work on understanding the connections between molecular structures in Epstein-Barr virus (EBV) and EBV-associated diseases (e.g. Hodgkin’s lymphoma and other deadly cancers). This early investment toward a very promising line of research will likely have an “outsized” impact on the field. We are at a very basic stage, but I have high confidence that we are going to make significant discoveries with strong implications to biomedicine (e.g. better therapies for EBV-associated cancers).

With science funding so hideously scarce even very good/significant projects can find it hard to secure funding; this is particularly true at the early stages. What makes this award so important, at this early stage of my own work, is that it will allow me to collect critically important “proof of principle” data to help secure additional funding. Eventually this will allow me to build an independent and sustainable research program aimed at understanding the roles of EBV molecular structure in disease, and in targeting these structures to help treat EBV-associated diseases.

I sincerely thank the Foundation for the financial and moral support they have shown (and continue to show) to my project. I wholeheartedly support the mission of the Einsteinium Foundation and look forward to all the other amazing science that will be made possible through their efforts. I can’t stress enough how important is early-stage funding for research, and this foundation helps fulfill a critical need in the scientific community."

Oh and in other news... Check out our new blockexplorer, charts, emc2/btc and emc2.usd converters.
