241  Bitcoin / Bitcoin Discussion / Re: [SOLVED] Bitcoin's chicken and egg problem on: June 01, 2012, 03:17:11 AM
Could somebody feasibly make a living playing online computer games? Slaying dragons and such all day, gaining armor and weapons, selling weapons for Bitcoins, and on and on? That's badass!

in some asian countries, pro video gamers are treated like rock stars.

Ever heard of SlayerS_Boxer?

The carbon tax is a piece of sh%t...

Agreed. Just an excuse to sheer the sheep

This is one of the reasons the wallet file has no business being a DB!

+1

This is something that worries me greatly... I have a lot of BTC in cold storage.

However, I have tested my wallet several times prior to doing the backups.

If the wallet is unencrypted, it's pretty easy to extract the private keys from a hex editor, even if the whole thing is corrupt (assuming, of course, that the individual bytes making up the keys are themselves unharmed).

If encrypted, it's probably nearly as easy (passphrase must be known of course), but I have never dived into it to know for sure.  The average wallet.dat is 99.9% fluff and 0.01% the actual key data.

Makes sense. I don't know much about BerkleyDB, but does it have good safeguards against corruption, such as using crc checks and transactional records?

(2) The maximum concentration in any given security is 20%.

Is there any limit to exposure to a single market sector?
For instance, if your algorithm chooses to invest in 10 different pirate bonds you will have less than 20% in any given security but still 100% exposure to Pirates's default.

This is a great point. Right now no, there is no sector filter - but I will definitely consider adding this soon since it's a great idea.

However, regarding Pirate: I have already filtered out all assets that are associated with his operations. If you want pirate exposure, you'll have to invest elsewhere. Nothing against him personally, it's just that I don't know or understand what he is doing.
245  Economy / Securities / Re: [GLBSE] MOVETO.FUND - MoveTo Growth Fund on: May 31, 2012, 08:00:26 PM
There's a potential risk for you however. If there's a panic buy-back demand with a high volume, you will lose a lot of money when you liquidate your position, considering the low liquidity of GLBSE.

This is a really good point. I plan to buy-back the shares with my own money though anyway if people want to sell to avoid panic liquidation. I'll try to keep a sizable personal reserve for this purpose, but naturally I don't have an infinite reserve for a real GLBSE catastrophe, such as a major crash event.

I'm hoping that liquidity improves as time goes on and therefore withdrawals will be less of a problem.
246  Economy / Securities / Re: [GLBSE] MOVETO.FUND - MoveTo Growth Fund on: May 30, 2012, 10:49:16 PM
5/30/2012 - CONTRACT UPDATED PRIOR TO IPO such that dividends are automatically reinvested into the fund, which is how most hedge funds operate. This ensures the highest possible performance for investors, as well as making MOVETO.FUND a "set it and forget it" type of investment, where clients are not continually having to reinvest their own dividends. (It also has the side effect of making the paperwork easier for everyone, because investors that continually request new shares in order to reinvest their dividends would be very difficult for me to accommodate.)

Here is the final contract:

(0) Each IPO share represents a 1 BTC investment in the fund.
(1) The fund trades and invests solely in securities on the GLBSE.
(2) The maximum concentration in any given security is 20%.
(3) 80% of earnings are reinvested for fund growth, and 20% are paid out as fees to the fund operator. Fees are paid once a month on the first of the month.
(4) The fund operator will buy-back shares on the first of every month upon request to ensure liquidity for exiting MOVETO.FUND. Each share is valued at (1 / # shares) * fund_portfolio_value minus 1% to cover redemption expenses.
(5) New shares may be issued at any time at (1 / # shares) *
fund_portfolio_value price to ensure liquidity for entering MOVETO.FUND

I have notified Nefario of these changes so hopefully the IPO page will change shortly. Naturally after the first share is sold the contract cannot be modified, so I want to make sure I get it right. It's also possible Nefario will require that the IPO be postponed somewhat due this modification.

Either way, I will keep you posted. Take care.

248  Other / Beginners & Help / Re: Reverse a 0-conf transaction on: May 30, 2012, 10:06:53 PM
Practically speaking, no.  Once all the nodes hear about your first transaction, they won't relay your second one.
How long would it take for every node to "hear" about it? What if I called my uncle Joe in Uzbekistan and he did the double-spend? Surely he's connected to different nodes, so given a higher transaction fee and a very short period between the first tx and the second, his spend might outweigh mine?
There must be some substantial time between my tx and half of the nodes in the world hearing about it, given the relay time of packets and limited network connectivity, right?

It's essentially random as to who wins if a lot of nodes are spending the same coins, which is why a prudent user of Bitcoin waits for at least one confirmation before considering a coin fully transferred.
249  Bitcoin / Project Development / Re: btcbalance.net alternative on: May 30, 2012, 09:30:28 PM
You get what you pay for.

Maybe give btcbalance.net a nice big tip along with your improvement suggestions, and you'll get what you want.  Smiley

( btw I've used it, loved it, and tipped several times )
250  Bitcoin / Bitcoin Discussion / Re: Bitcoin reaching critical mass in New Hampshire? on: May 30, 2012, 09:20:24 PM
The only problem with BTC is that it's a bit difficult for non-technies to gain confidence in. Gold is easy: it's shiny. But try explaining even basic crypto to someone on the street - they won't get it.

Luckily, once enough people accept it, people will "just use it" without thinking, much like the USD continued to function when it was no longer backed by gold. But prior to critical mass, it's very difficult. I even have family members who are really interested in Bitcoin, but refuse to buy any until they "have the time to study and really understand it."

A couple updates today:

252  Economy / Speculation / Re: Predict the next 2 years, no take-backsies on: May 30, 2012, 04:04:15 AM
Is anyone taking care of BIP 33? Most of these predictions (mine included) seem to assume that there won't be any show-stoppers regarding scalability. But if Satoshidice is currently adding 100MB to the blockchain per month, stick on some growth and some other businesses also pulling a lot of traffic, and it could be as much as 50GB before the end of this year. We can't rely on Moore's Law to magically fix everything if some aspects of Bitcoin are expected to grow much faster than 2x per ~18 months.

This also concerns me... I hadn't heard of BIP 33 yet, thanks for the heads up.

BTW found it here.
253  Economy / Economics / Re: Ron Paul vs. Paul Krugman on: May 30, 2012, 04:00:15 AM
I love this.  Krugman obliterates this dunce.
So wait.  You agree with Krugman's theories of economics, but support bitcoin?  Seems to me it should be one or the other.

+1

Bitcoin is the anti-Krugman.

I love how Krugman hates Bitcoin, but there's nothing he can do to stop it.

I can't wait for the likes of him to destroy the USD so the world will suddenly wake up and realize the value of ( and point of ) BTC...
254  Economy / Speculation / Re: Chart reading. on: May 30, 2012, 03:51:43 AM
What is the standard method for reading charts and predicting market movements based on them?

What does this community use?

I highly recommend Evidence-Based Technical Analysis: Applying the Scientific Method and Statistical Inference to Trading Signals.

The problem most CMT's have in my experience is that they don't do rigorous statistical analysis of their methodology.
255  Other / Meta / Re: New Forum Software: End the Stagnancy on: May 30, 2012, 03:29:23 AM
To be honest I rather like the current forum software... not perfect, but I've gotten used to it Smiley

Any time is a good time to get out of the fiat money system.
257  Economy / Digital goods / Re: Diablo III Retail cd key on: May 29, 2012, 11:47:47 PM
Damn... this game looks awesome, but I cannot play it.

I was hooked on Diablo II for years... wasted soooo much time playing it - was a total addict to the point that it negatively impacted my life.

I gave up games a few years ago so that my time is used now on productive things ( or social things), and I haven't missed gaming too much. I like programming my own games though Smiley
258  Bitcoin / Development & Technical Discussion / Re: What web related programming languages should I learn to make BitCoin Website? on: May 29, 2012, 11:27:56 PM
I'm probably not the right person ( since I haven't done web programming in years, and the last time was with ASP classic based on pre-.NET VB ), but I'm in love with python. If I ever did any web programming again, I'd try to see if there was a way to do it in python, or a python-based framework.
259  Economy / Trading Discussion / Re: Dwolla email - "We need to verify your identity!" on: May 29, 2012, 10:58:56 PM
Boycott services that require identity verification!

Seriously.

Well, to the extent that it is practical.
260  Bitcoin / Bitcoin Discussion / Re: Why is bitcoin now so absurdly stable when priced in USD? on: May 29, 2012, 10:57:20 PM
I think Bitcoin would be increasing in value right now if there wasn't so much inflation.

I don't just mean via mining new coins, I mean the amount of lending that is going on creating a large amount of BTC denominated bonds. This is a very healthy sign though, as long as it doesn't get out of control.
