24521  Economy / Service Announcements / Re: [ANN] ChipMixer - mixing reinvented on: November 28, 2017, 09:19:00 PM
When we started smallest ChipMixer chip (1 mBTC) was worth $1.5.
Today Bitcoin price reached $10,000 which makes the smallest ChipMixer chip (1 mBTC) worth $10.
Should we introduce smaller chips?
Smaller chips would be good, especially if someone wants to pay someone by giving a voucher. At the moment you can't pay $15, it's either $10 or $20.
But: Bitcoin fees only got higher. If you want to using a 1 mBTC chip to make a transaction, you currently need to pay about 0.4 mBTC on fees. You can pay less, and sometimes that's even enough, but fees have been much higher too.

A 0.5 mBTC chip is useless if you have to pay 80% in fees to spend it.
24522  Bitcoin / Bitcoin Technical Support / Re: Core temporarily marks past transactions as "offline"? on: November 28, 2017, 09:10:10 PM
it keeps trashing the HDD for 10 minutes after startup
I recently tested this: it took 80 seconds to startup from my HDD. After I moved the chainstate-directory to an SSD, the startup time went down to 20 seconds.

If it takes your PC 10 minutes, I guess you're low on memory. If that's the case, see if you can install some more RAM. If you're low on memory, this upgrade can make a huge difference in overall performance.

Addition: I just restarted Bitcoin Core. Since I have the chainstate-directory on my SSD, it takes less than a second to switch from "offline" to "normal" after starting up.
24523  Economy / Exchanges / Re: [ANN] Bittrex - Next generation exchange (btc/ltc/eac/ppc/rdd/ftc/and more) on: November 28, 2017, 07:17:12 PM
Howdy Bittrex,

I'd like to request you guys to allow withdrawals! If you want to block users, that's totally fine with me, but do it the proper way:
1. Disable trading (I can still trade!)
2. Disable deposits (I can still deposit!)
3. Enable withdrawals as the only thing left to do on the site

I'd happily move on to the competition after being a customer for years. What you're doing now is unethical to say the least.
24524  Economy / Scam Accusations / Re: bittrex is a scam website - AVOID!- WITH PROOF!! on: November 28, 2017, 07:12:28 PM
The 'problem' is that they are locking funds of users who have been trading there for years without warning. That borders if not equals theft.
I would get it if they - for whatever reason - want to block people from using their services. The right way to do this is to disable deposits, disable trading, and let users withdraw their funds.
What they're doing now is forcing people to get full-scale verification to be able to trade 100BTC ($1 million!) per day. They know that if they would allow users to withdraw, those users are gone forever. And they also know that users who are forced to send full verification up to crazy selfies, are more likely to use the service after they had to verify anyway.

It's very unethical to use people's own money to force them to do things they don't want to, and indeed, that comes very close to theft.
I'm curious to see if they actually get away with this, cause if they do, they steal a small fortune. Kinda like the Mt.Gox guy who gets almost a billion dollars profit out of going bankrupt.
24525  Economy / Services / Re: WTB 100 High Profile User's Signature, Avatar, PM Space (15,000$ Budget) on: November 28, 2017, 05:57:55 PM
This is a horrible idea as you're targeting DT1 and DT2 members as well as staff members, and the most likely reason for this isn't honesty.
I am targeting them because I want more effective results. people give more attention to staff members posts and Trusted users (DT1, DT2 whatever) Posts more then any random users. and signature in their profile can get more attraction.
Most ICOs are only meant to earn the creators easy money. I expect trusted users on the forum to want to know more about what project they'll be promoting than just "an ICO project".

I can buy Avatars also.
My avatar is currenly unpaid for, but I like wearing it with my (paid) signature.

I wouldn't mind changing my avatar and personal text this for a while, under 2 conditions:
1. It pays nice (make me an offer, my current signature paid $334 last week)
2. I personally trust the ICO to not be a scam (and only a small fraction of ICOs qualify for this)

About me: see Hero Campaign Manager LoyceV - Portfolio.

So this thread turns to Politic & Religion topic?
At least it hasn't filled with shitposters applying.

24527  Other / Meta / Re: Suggestion: Ban "list" threads on: November 28, 2017, 12:31:50 PM
I think not allowing noobs to create threads, while not a perfect solution, is at least doing something that might help.  I refuse to let the perfect get in the way of the good.
I always think about the few knowledgeble people who join the forum and create good threads (example). You could argue a Newbie could buy a $30 Copper membership to be able to open a thread, but I expect that to discourage honest users.

How about a n00b jail for every Newbie who wants to create his third thread? At this point a Mod can review his previous threads, and either allow him to continue, or nuke him on the spot.

I'm talking about noobs posting in crap threads, dude.  You don't seem to follow what I'm writing whatsoever,  so duly noted.   I'm suggesting that when shitposters keep posting in threads like "How bitcoin affect ur life?" or some such, if they keep posting in it, that could be reportable.
I love how hilariousandco started thrashing spamthreads, and spammers started complaining about their post count dropping. I too have reported a lot more posts lately.
24528  Bitcoin / Bitcoin Technical Support / Re: Private Key Sweeping Issues on: November 28, 2017, 12:11:12 PM
it's coming up with tens of thousands of private keys
What is "it" in this sensence? What program did you use to export the private keys?
24529  Bitcoin / Bitcoin Technical Support / Re: I want a wallet that I can brute force on: November 28, 2017, 12:06:30 PM
What if the thief spends $50 on Google cloud computing, and has 100 times more power at his disposal than your home computer?

This is what I would do:
You say you want to store "very small amounts". For this, I would use no encryption at all.
It's a safe, they're supposed to be safe. If you don't trust your safe, get a better safe. If you're afraid a thief might steal it, bolt it to a wall.

As an alternative, you could create 2 BIP38 encrypted paper wallets with the same private key but different password. Write the password for WalletA on WalletB, and write the password for WalletB on WalletA. Put WalletA in your safe, and WalletB goes to your parent's house.
You should still make sure you remember the passwords though, because if your parents lose your backup, you lose your password.
24530  Bitcoin / Electrum / Re: Help Needed. Very desperate. on: November 28, 2017, 11:52:36 AM
I also have access to my public AND private keys.
Your private keys are all you need.* That is, if you really have them (which means you must have manually exported all of them from Electrum in the past).
If that's the case: go to Electrum, click File > New > create New Wallet > Standard wallet > Use public or private keys > copy your private keys > done!

Then, create another wallet, but this time select Create a new seed. Store your seed, move your coins from the old addresses to your new wallet, and safely keep your seed words.

* I stand corrected, I haven't used 2FA by myself and didn't know it creates multisig keys.
24531  Bitcoin / Bitcoin Technical Support / Re: Core temporarily marks past transactions as "offline"? on: November 28, 2017, 11:44:48 AM
It means your Bitcoin Core is still starting up, and not yet properly connected to the network.
It's normal, mine does the same.

As a workaround: don't turn off Bitcoin Core, I keep it running all the time.
24532  Bitcoin / Bitcoin Technical Support / Re: Producing a deterministic wallet on: November 28, 2017, 11:34:38 AM
2) disconnect your internet, start electrum, create a new wallet, write down the seed words, generate a new deposit address
~
4) delete the wallet again, reboot, reconnect to the internet, fund the address generated in step 2 (and 3, since that's the same address)
I wouldn't rely on just this: malware is very patient, and very persistent. It's always safest to just assume you have malware that can record your data even when you're offline.
I prefer to use an Ubuntu LIVE CD for this, running entirely from memory, without any network connected. Once you turn off the PC, you can be absolutely sure nothing gets stored on your PC.

2) Also, is another method to write down the private key and public keys on paper? If so, how are these obtained and then how are they input back into Bitcoin.qt?
Any private key you create with any program can be written down if your handwriting is accurate enough. It's much easier to use software designed to create paper wallets. There are at least 2 I trust (and many more I don't trust!):
https://www.bitaddress.org
https://bitcoinpaperwallet.com/
Of course, here too, download the website, and run it offline from a Linux LIVE CD. Print it on a dumb laser printer (big office printers with hard drive can store data) with an USB-cable. You can use inkjet too, but it gets destroyed if your paper wallet ever gets wet.

Importing private keys into Bitcoin Core is easy:
Code:
Click Help > Debug window > Console > enter importprivkey "privkey" ( "label" ) ( rescan )

24534  Other / Meta / Re: Suggestion: Ban "list" threads on: November 27, 2017, 07:34:38 PM
It's been suggested before to exclude certain boards from counting as Activity.

You get threads like this all the timehttps://bitcointalk.org/index.php?topic=2467953.0
The Newbie you're talking about has an account older than mine, 18 Posts, and created 16 topics!

I'm not against allowing Newbies to create new topics, but there should be a limit. All of his 16 topics are useless, and apparently creating a topic is easier to spam than posting in a thread. This way, his shitposts can't be offtopic, even though topics like that have been created countless times already.

Another beauty:
How and where do you purchase iota?
One spammer creates a thread, countless other spammers gladly "reply" and spam more.

I'd say hopper28755 should just be nuked.
24535  Other / Beginners & Help / Re: How to claim my BTG? on: November 27, 2017, 06:39:13 PM
Is this recommended to be done on a different computer?  I read that claiming bitcoin cash, you should use another computer.  I assume using this on the same computer as bitcoin cash would be fine?  What about doing this on same computer as you keeping btc on the same computer with electrum?
You can use same computer, that's fine.
If you're installing untrusted software, you risk compromising your computer. I use VirtualBox for untrusted wallets.

So you are saying if i send my btc from my electrum to another electrum address... then i were to download the fake bitgold wallet and then put in the 12 word phrase, would they be able to get the btc to the address that i transferred the btc to?  Thus the old btc address would have no btc etc since its already transferred.
If you move your Bitcoin to another address in the same HD wallet, then yes, your 12 word phrase gives access to that address too!
You can prevent this by just importing one private key, or just creating a new HD wallet before splitting fork-coins.
24536  Other / Beginners & Help / Re: Exchange Dust Suggestion on: November 27, 2017, 06:30:35 PM
Having been at a couple of exchanges recently doing transactions I was left with tiny amounts of crypto currency (dust) that cannot be sent or spent and that left me thinking.
Exchanges usually give you the option to clear the altcoin from your balances. That effectively donates the dust to the exchange.
Another way to use it is to buy a bit more, so you have enough to cover the minimum and sell it again. An even better solution would be to not collect dust in the first place.
Or, since you never know in crypto, you can just keep the dust until it becomes worth something again.

Quote
What if exchanges were to set up a charity bucket, bin, box or whatever you want to call it on their site for reputable global charities.
I can think of a few different reasons why it won't work:
1. It's extra work for the exchanges
2. The exchanges would rather get it for themselves.
3. It can't be verified, and can easily be cheated on by exchanges.
4. Almost any "charity" is just a business with directors, salaries and air travel. It will be hard to find one everybody agrees upon.

Quote
What do you folks think ?
My negativity aside: I did make a similar suggestion earlier this month. Not related to exchanges, but only to altcoins you actually control:
Another idea just popped up in my head: Dust to Charity!
I've had (and still have) many different altcoins, all barely worth anything, and for sure not worth the time to figure out how to sell them for a few pennies. I imagine many people have this "problem". Wouldn't it be nice to create a website where you can just upload old and almost empty altcoin wallets, after which the site collects them, and once worth it, sells them to donate the proceedings to some (crypto related) charity?
24537  Bitcoin / Bitcoin Discussion / Re: Bitcoin reaches 10,000$ price: market economy is now much stronger on: November 27, 2017, 04:13:23 PM
tens of millions of people in the world have crypto currencies.
Do you have a source to back up this claim? There are just over 20 million Bitcoin addresses with a balance, most of them have less than 0.001BTC (source), and many people own more than one address. That makes it impossible for tens of millions of people to own Bitcoin, and it makes it very unlikely that many people own cryptocurrencies other than Bitcoin.

I'm mainly surprised Bitcoin has reached such a high price with so little users! Now imagine the possibilities if Bitcoin would scale to allow more transactions, and hundreds of millions of people start using it!

You know the "Dutch tulips" bubble is just a myth.... right. There are no financial data backing up those claims that it actually happened.

The only one without a richlist is Monero.
Blackbytes doesn't have a richlist either. It's so private, it's not even traded at centralized exchanges.

I keep telling myself I would have blown it, so it doesn't really matter that I didn't join when I first read about Bitcoin... It softens the sorrow a bit Tongue

Every piece of Bitcoin I ever sold would have been worth more now too. I sold the few altcoins I had 2 years ago, long before altcoins went up 100-fold or more. This has taught me I'm very bad at timing when to sell, which lead to my current "system": I sell a fraction when it's up enough. My reasoning: if it drops afterwards, well, at leave I have something! And if it continues going up, well, at least I only sold a fraction. This gives me (some) peace of mind.

Are you using https://blockchain.info/wallet/#/ ?

Most likely: empty your browser cache/cookies. You can easily test if this is the cause by opening the site in private browsing mode: use your right mouse button on the above link, then select "open in New Private Window". Or press CTRL-SHIFT-P in Firefox or CTRL-SHIFT-N in Chrome.
